Pakistan in New Zealand ODI Series - 1st ODI

New Zealand v Pakistan

New Zealand won by 9 wickets (with 196 balls remaining)

Right, we are back on. Akhtar to Guptill.

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 2 runs, menace at 146 kph straight away! Almost a yorker on leg stump, Guptill just about squeezes it off the inside edge behind square for two

0.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 3 runs, pacy again, on the pads and Guptill clips it in a pleasing manner for a couple through square leg

Jesse to face. The man could barely buy a run in the Tests. Two slips in place. Round the wicket.

0.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, no run, he's off a golden duck now. Stays in the crease and dabs a delivery outside off towards point

0.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, 1 run, Ryder motors down the track to get off the mark. Back of a length outside off, he drops it with soft hands towards cover and takes off. Nicely done

0.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 1 run, back of a length on off stump at 147 kph, Guptill has no problem picking a single to the off side.

0.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, 2 runs, over-pitched on middle, he seemed to be looking to burst through Jesse's defences, but has been driven against the angle into the covers for one

End of over 1 (9 runs) New Zealand 9/0 (116 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 9.00, RRR: 2.36)
JD Ryder    3* (3b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-9-0
MJ Guptill    6* (3b)

Tanvir now, left arm over, off the wrong foot.

1.1

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, and some shape away from the right hander immediately. Moves away from middle stump, but is defended compactly by Guptill

1.2

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 wide, drifts down the leg side for a wide

1.2

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 3 runs, too straight and Guptill cashes in with another pleasing flick. Gets it past midwicket and then bustles across ewith purpose, convincing Ryder to go for three

1.3

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, back of a length at 128 kph, no movement for Tanvir, Ryder works it off the face of the bat towards point

1.4

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, he's not pitching it up enough for movement. Ryder stays back again and cracks it into the covers

1.5

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, 2 runs, sloppy from Umar Akmal at point. Runs across to his left and dives over the ball as Ryder steers square. Gets two for his efforts.

1.6

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, into the pads this time. Not much pace from Tanvir, 128 kph, clipped crisply, but straight to midwicket

End of over 2 (6 runs) New Zealand 15/0 (110 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 7.50, RRR: 2.29)
JD Ryder    5* (7b)      Sohail Tanvir    1-0-6-0
MJ Guptill    9* (5b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-9-0

2.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, no run, Shoaib drops it short, Guptill rides the bounce well and defend sto the off side

2.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, FOUR, emphatically drilled by Guptill. 144 kph, no problemo. It was over-pitched on off stump, Guptill was onto it so early that he did not have to drive it square. He just slammed it off the ftont foot to the right of mid-off for four. Nobody moved.

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, no run, better length, holds it back and negates the drive. Guptill ends up feeling for it outside off and misses

2.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 1 run, thickish outside edge as Guptill tries to force it square, and they get a single towards point

2.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, no run, ominous movements here from NZ's openers. Ryder doesn't bother with trifles like footwork - he just sets himself up and looks to rifle a cover drive for four. He finds the fielder though.

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, no run, slants into the pads this time, Ryder looks to work it square, but can't get bat on it. Balloons up off the pad towards square leg

End of over 3 (5 runs) New Zealand 20/0 (105 runs required from 47 overs, RR: 6.66, RRR: 2.23)
JD Ryder    5* (9b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-14-0
MJ Guptill    14* (9b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    1-0-6-0

3.1

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, back of a length and angling across the right hader who defends into the off side

3.2

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, uppish but safe. 124 kph from Tanvir, on leg stump, too slow for Guptill's liking as he checks his punch down the ground a little late. Nearly spoons it straight to mid on

3.3

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, Guptill looks for the good old plonk-and-tonk, but doesn't make contact. Tanvir gets this one to nip away from off as Guptill plants the front foot across and looks to launch down the ground. Meets with thin air.

3.4

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 wide, this one's angled miles outside off and Guptill can'teven reach it

3.4

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, more effort in the short ball - 129 kph - Guptill is a moment late on the pull shot and finds midwicket, who nearly concedes an overthrow with an unnecessary throw.

3.5

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, this one angles across Guptill, who chooses to let it go

3.6

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 wide, Sohail having take-off problems here. Another shabby wide, well outside off

3.6

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, under-edges a cut off the eventual final delivery, that stayed a touch low

End of over 4 (2 runs) New Zealand 22/0 (103 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 5.50, RRR: 2.23)
MJ Guptill    14* (15b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    2-0-8-0
JD Ryder    5* (9b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-14-0

4.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, FOUR, Ryder does what he tried to do last over. His footwork was conspicuous by its absence. He stayed back and slammed it on the up as it angled across, over the heads of the men inside the circle on the off side.

Round the wicket now.

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, 2 runs, this time Ryder looks to go the other way, using the angle to hoick him over the leg side. Not so well timed, but good enough for two over the infield

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, no run, more respect this time, Ryder defends a length ball on the pads.

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, FOUR, ka-boom. Ryder is getting into some serious hitting zone here. Another pacy delivery, not there for the drive. Did not matter. Ryder stood and delivered. Just slapped it on the up, and it flew past mid off for four

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, SIX, Hoo hoo Hook! Shoaib shifts back to over the wicket and bangs it in short at the mid-140s. Ryder calmly swivels on the backfoot, meets the ball at the top of its trajectory with a superbly executed hook shot. It sails into the crowds.

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, 1 run, and finishes with a single through midwicket. Keeps strike for the next over

End of over 5 (17 runs) New Zealand 39/0 (86 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 7.80, RRR: 1.91)
JD Ryder    22* (15b 2x4 1x6)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-31-0
MJ Guptill    14* (15b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    2-0-8-0

5.1

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, length ball on the stumps, Ryder defends compactly from the crease

5.2

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, 1 wide, another wide from Tanvir, this time outside the left-hander's off stump. Ryder wants to have a go, all the same! Misses the slash though

5.2

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, FOUR, Ryder dumps another one over mid-off. Not the best bit of timing, but he's getting away with these thanks to the complete lack of movment from the Pakistan's seamers. Couple of bounces over mid-off. Ryder hasn't moved his feet even once today.

5.3

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, finally Tanvir gets one to move in. Ryder is cramped as he looks to cut and wisely changes his mind

5.4

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, full delivery on off stump, defended solidly to mid-off

5.5

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, SIX, the Pakistan fans are probably going to disagree, but this shot reminds me of Saeed Anwar. Full delivery on off, Ryder goes down on a knee and slap-flicks this as he would deal with an errant kid. Clears the ropes at midwicket easily.

5.6

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, can't punish the last ball, had enough room outside off to play the cover drive and he again times it well, but finds cover.

17.30 Pakistan's chances of pulling off an unlikely win have been scuppered in these six overs of muscle-bound mayhem from Ryder. Guptill's looked the part at the other end. The players take their 40-minute break. I'll be back for the remainder of this match at 18.10. Until then, do head across to our YouTube channel and our Facebook page.

End of over 6 (11 runs) New Zealand 50/0 (75 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 8.33, RRR: 1.70)
JD Ryder    32* (21b 3x4 2x6)      Sohail Tanvir    3-0-19-0
MJ Guptill    14* (15b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-31-0

As we get ready for resumption, here is a lovely comment from Matt, the kind that makes the job of sifting through commentary feedback such a joy. "Who's to say Tanvir bowls off the wrong foot? Maybe it's everyone else who bowls off the wrong foot!"

Below the belt from Aatmesh: "Hope Ryder is not drunk enough to think this is a Twenty20 match."

While we wait, why not add@ESPNcricinfo to your twitter feed?

Shoaib continues. Guptill to face.

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 1 wide, and begins with a wide down the leg side

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Guptill, 3 runs, and Guptill's away. It's almost like he never went inside for lunch. If he did, he probably ate something special. He's just punched a full delivery from middle and leg line without any fuss - no backlift, almost no follow through. It slows up near the boundary, they get three.

6.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, FOUR, Ryder's probably eaten one of these muscle enhancers at the break. He continues to muscle them away. Feet firmly planted in the crease, they'll make a good endorsement for a cement company. And then the hands take over, and the bat comes through. Crack. Pick it up at the cover boundary.

6.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, FOUR, Shoaib bangs it in, Ryder's ready with the pull. This time he rolls the wrists over it, keeps it down and sends it scurrying through square leg

6.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Ryder, no run, tried to cut off the backfoot towards backward point.

6.5

7.3

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, no run, short ball, better direction than the previous one and Ryder lets it go

7.5

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 run, this one drifts onto the pads and Guptill tucks it fine for one

7.6

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, 1 run, this time on Ryder's pads, and he nudges square to turn the strike. Tanvir has been all over the place today.

John Mathew is impressed by one aspect of Tanvir. "Sohail Tanvir's locks are quite mesmerizing," he says.

End of over 8 (5 runs) New Zealand 71/0 (54 runs required from 42 overs, RR: 8.87, RRR: 1.28)

MJ Guptill    19* (19b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-47-0

Razzaq comes on.

8.1

Abdul Razzaq to Ryder, 3 runs, Ryder rolls on like a fluent river, finding a way through the rocks on its way - the fielders in the covers. Back of a length outside off, he leans half forward and caresses it through a very small gap

8.2

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, no run, drives the second ball back to the bowler

8.3

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, no run, tries to force a ball from outside off, and plays it straight to cover

8.4

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, 1 run, over-pitched on middle and leg, Guptill digs it out to mid-on and picks up a single

8.5

Abdul Razzaq to Ryder, 1 run, Ryder has flown to 50. Back of a length at 128 kph, on middle and leg, he inside edges a defensive shot to the leg side and takes a single

8.6

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, 1 run, short ball, Guptill pounces on it but doesn't time the pull well enough to beat midwicket

Richard: "Jesse Ryder ran three?? Did the ball go down a rabbit hole?" Hahaha!

End of over 9 (6 runs) New Zealand 77/0 (48 runs required from 41 overs, RR: 8.55, RRR: 1.17)
MJ Guptill    21* (23b 1x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-6-0
JD Ryder    50* (31b 5x4 2x6)      Sohail Tanvir    4-0-24-0

9.1

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, out of nowhere, Tanvir gets one to jag back in sharply. It lands outside off, darts into Guptill, cuts him up and then somehow eludes the stumps.

9.2

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 leg bye, gets pad on this one, fuller on the stumps and gets a leg bye towards midwicket

9.3

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, 1 run, Ryder glides one off the angled face from outside off towards third man for one

Tom: "Anybody else notice Ryders arms don't seem to do anything unless they absolutely have to?"

9.4

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, 1 run, cheeky single. On a length in line with off stump and its been dropped to the off side for another steal

9.5

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, FOUR, Ryder's had enough of the pinching singles business for the over. He picks a slow offcutter at 119 kph early, plonks the front foot across and smacks it straight back down the ground.

9.6

Sohail Tanvir to Ryder, OUT, did that carry? Looks like it just might have. Ryder gets a full ball on middle and leg, gets inside the line and times the flick-pull so well that it carries to Asad Shafiq close to the boundary at midwicket. Pakistan have something to celebrate.

JD Ryder c Asad Shafiq b Sohail Tanvir 55 (45m 34b 6x4 2x6) SR: 161.76

End of over 10 (7 runs) New Zealand 84/1 (41 runs required from 40 overs, RR: 8.40, RRR: 1.02)

10.3

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, no run, similar ball, similar response. Defended compactly down the track

10.5

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, no run, Taylor seems to have the same plan. Another compact forward defensive

10.6

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, no run, huge appeal for caught behind, turned down by Umpire Saheba. That moved away from Taylor, who was fending after committing to the front foot. There was a noise as it passed, but did he edge it? Replays awaited. Looks like he did not get an edge after all.

End of over 11 (1 run) New Zealand 85/1 (40 runs required from 39 overs, RR: 7.72, RRR: 1.02)
LRPL Taylor    0* (5b)      Abdul Razzaq    2-0-7-0

12.2

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, 1 run, drifts into the pads and Guptill clips it square for a single

12.3

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, FOUR, pleasing stroke from Taylor who manufactures a boundary with some smart footwork. He walks across the stumps and forward to convert a length ball on off into a half volley on the legs. He then simply chips it with the wrists over midwicket for four

12.4

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, no run, Razzaq moves it outside off stump and Taylor tries to force it into the covers, but can't get it away

LRPL Taylor    5* (12b 1x4)      Abdul Razzaq    3-0-12-0

13.1

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, no run, on a length at 125 kph, Guptill plays the on-drive towards mid on

13.2

Sohail Tanvir to Guptill, FOUR, Bang. Every now and then, one of these New Zealand batsmen decides to stamp their authority with an emphatic bounbdary. 14.4

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, 2 runs, Taylor walks right across his furniture and works one from off stump line towards midwicket. Two more to the cause.

14.5

Abdul Razzaq to Taylor, 1 run, short and straying down the leg side, easy run for Taylor who nudges behind square

14.6

Abdul Razzaq to Guptill, FOUR, it's almost a calculated effort to produce a boundary, at least once every other over. Another poor ball from Razzaq, angling into the pads, Guptill gets the front foot in line and goes airborne over midwicket. Clean wrist-work and good placement.

End of over 15 (9 runs) New Zealand 108/1 (17 runs required from 35 overs, RR: 7.20, RRR: 0.48)
MJ Guptill    36* (38b 3x4)      Abdul Razzaq    4-0-21-0
LRPL Taylor    10* (18b 1x4)      Sohail Tanvir    7-0-39-1

Batting Powerplay now. We may not see any overs without restrictions in this chase. Still confused, why Pakistan took the bowling Powerplay though. Afridi comes on.

15.2

Shahid Afridi to Guptill, no run, Guptill stays back and looks to tap a single to the off side. Can't get the gap though.

15.5

Shahid Afridi to Guptill, 1 run, horrible piece of fielding by Umar Akmal. Takes an eternity to return the throw from point, as the batsmen were trying a tight run. In the end, Taylor made it easily

15.6

Shahid Afridi to Taylor, 1 run, ends up with a single to retain strike. Worked to deep midwicket

End of over 16 (3 runs) New Zealand 111/1 (14 runs required from 34 overs, RR: 6.93, RRR: 0.41)
LRPL Taylor    12* (22b 1x4)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-3-0
MJ Guptill    37* (40b 3x4)      Abdul Razzaq    4-0-21-0

Rehman comes on now.

16.1

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, no run, turn straight away, across the face of the bat and an outside edge, but safely to point

16.2

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, FOUR, and he drops short now. Taylor is so quick and decisive with his footwork, ready for the cut immediately and conscious to beat backward point to his left. Four more.

16.3

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, no run, fired in short and flat at 98 kph, Taylor works it back to the bowler off the back foot

16.4

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, SIX, Mis-hit but safely over square leg for six. That's the patent Ross Taylor slog-sweep across the line. It was in the slot, on middle and leg at a nice length but he seemed to get be a little late on the shot and hence the top edge. It just kept going, carried over Shoaib on the ropes easily

16.5

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, no run, short outside off and he looks to cut, can't find the gap this time.

16.6

Abdur Rehman to Taylor, no run, full on off, flicked powerfully, but midwicket intercepts. Almost a run out at the bowler's end, but the throw misses as Guptill dives in

End of over 17 (10 runs) New Zealand 121/1 (4 runs required from 33 overs, RR: 7.11, RRR: 0.12)
LRPL Taylor    22* (28b 2x4 1x6)      Abdur Rehman    1-0-10-0
MJ Guptill    37* (40b 3x4)      Shahid Afridi    1-0-3-0

17.1

Shahid Afridi to Guptill, 3 runs, is that the end of the game? Not yet, one more to go. Gutill looks to slam one through the off side and gets a thick outside edge that runs away very fine towards third man for three

17.2

Shahid Afridi to Taylor, 1 run, Taylor finishes it off with a flick towards midwicket and picks up a single. This is a walloping. In a 50-overs a side game, we have had under 55 overs all counted. And New Zealand have won a game for first time since what seems like the Mesozoic era.

That then just about winds up our coverage of the game. Here is George Binoy's bulletin of the game. The next game is on the 26th from Queenstown. Until then, this is Nitin Sundar signing off on behalf of the team at ESPNcricinfo. So long and thanks for all the fish.

196 balls to spare in NZ's innings, making it the second most comprehensive win in terms of balls remaining, for NZ v Pak. The visitors will surely think of changing their combination in the next game, especially the fast bowling, but the bigger worry is the mindless batting against the moving ball. Great turnaround in one-day form for NZ, they did everything right today, barring getting the hat-tricks!

Afridi: "We lost too many early wickets. The ball was swinging and seaming a lot.. Misbah played a very responsible innings. We'll definitely step up in the next game. Tanvir is coming back after a long time. Shoaib was struggling a bit. But we have good bench strength there."

Vettori: "It was a good win for us after a long time. Tim Southee produced some great swing. We knew he's a bowler who can bowl really well always, and he put it all together in this series so far."

Southee is the MoM: "The ball was swinging around, and I was lucky to pick up the wickets while the others did a good job. Good to have Allan Donald around. Bit stiff after the Tests, but nice and fresh today."
