Fast bowler Doug Bracewell has been brought into New Zealand's ODI squad for the remainder of the series against Pakistan, replacing the injured Mitchell McClenaghan. McClenaghan fractured the bone above his left eye during the first ODI on Monday, when the ball burst through his helmet grille while he was batting. He is set to undergo minor cosmetic surgery for the injury on Friday in Auckland.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said McClenaghan's health was the priority for the team, so it was decided to replace him for the second and third ODIs, which will be played in Napier and Auckland this week.

"Obviously our main focus is making sure Mitch is okay, and we'll continue to monitor him over the coming days," Hesson said. "Doug has been in superb form this summer and we're confident he can come in and do a good job for us. He's an integral member of our wider bowling group and brings a lot to the side."

Bracewell had played the preceding ODI series against Sri Lanka, before turning out for Central Districts in the Ford Trophy - New Zealand's domestic one-dayers. There, in the Ford Trophy, he had picked up only three wickets in four bowling innings, but maintained an impressive economy rate of 4.96.

@ Stratocaster - those bowlers you named-yeah - a pity - were injured for long periods - but Allott disappeared after WC 99 - thought he was awesome there....Nash was unlucky his carrer co-incided with Cairns -Doull and Bond probably the most injury hit guys who would have achieved a lot more had they been fit...from memory there was Heath davis who was quick as...hope they pick Milne - and also in tests against Aus - lends a whole new dimension to NZ bowling...good luck from india....

I think Bennett is still injured. Haven't seen him in a long time. He was very, very quick but sustained injuries owing to his unconventional bowling style. I will love to see him back in T20, though. A very bright prospect!

They dont need to play their regular bowlers for Pakistan. 2nd string is enough for them. should also rest boult and henry....

@kiwicricketnut What happened to Hamish Bennett? Injured or just ignored?

Well I know there is a pecking order of sorts and bracewell is probably the next in line being in the wider black caps bowling group but there is a great prospect coming out of Canterbury at the moment who would of been a like for like replacement for mcclenaghan, ed nuttall is a very quick and aggressive left armer, pretty sure he's the leading wicket taker domestically, still quite young and raw but would of been great to see if he could make the step up and keep building up those bowling stocks.

New Zealand's never ending bowling resources. Touchwood, they remain the same. We deserve it after Bond, Nash, Allott, Doull, O Connor, Mills, Oram, Cairns etc.
