South Africa tour of New Zealand, 1st T20I: New Zealand v South Africa at Wellington, Feb 17, 2012
New Zealand won by 6 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)
17 February 2012 - night match (20-over match)

A bright and sunny day greets us in Wellington for the first eagerly anticipated contest between New Zealand and South Africa. It is a Twenty20 International to kick things off on this 3-3-3 tour, three matches in each format.

New Zealand have won the toss and have decided to bowl first. Andrew Ellis and Michael Bates are left out, while Jacob Oram is nursing an injury. Doug Bracewell and Martin Guptill come into the side that beat Zimbabwe in Hamilton on Tuesday.

South Africa are unchanged from the team that beat Canterbury on Wednesday in Christchurch.

Avi Singh with you on commentary tonight, Sanjay Murari doing scoring duties while Firdose Moonda will be dutifully tapping out match reports. Her toss summary will be up shortly.

The pitch should be full of runs, it was used for the New Zealand Women clash against England Women earlier in the day and at times it was slow and low, but these two teams' bowling attacks should offer more pace and bounce tonight.

While we wait, have a look at Firdose's preview, where she identifies the match as important in the build-up to the World Twenty20 later this year in Sri Lanka.

Twitter tweeters among you can follow us @ESPNcricinfo, as well as Firdose @FirdoseM and yours truly @MannerOfSpeakin.

Farooq Ghouri: "Why is Steyn not considered for this game? Has he stopped playing T20?" He has not been included for this T20I series, meaning New Zealand fans will have to wait a further week to see him on their shores.

Richard Levi will be opening the batting shortly for the South Africans, he was destructive on Wednesday night against Canterbury and the batsman who best used his opportunity in the middle. Will be interesting to see how he fares tonight.

Many of you pointing out that both teams are being skippered by their keepers tonight. The brother of the New Zealand keeper-skipper, Nathan McCullum, will be opening the bowling to Levi

Mills to Amla, no run, comes down the track and inside edges a heave to a short ball outside off into his pads

Mills to Amla, SIX, that is an extraordinarily flat six over the rope at extra cover, he gave himself some room and got underneath a half-volley outside off and just launched it with the minimum of fuss

Mills to Amla, OUT, goodness me, Martin Guptill has done a Jonty Rhodes to South Africa, Amla had played it down the ground at the bowler, who stuck a foot out. Amla decided to run but it had dribbled close to the stumps where Guptill swooped in and carried the ball along with his body weight right into the stumps with Amla out of his ground

HM Amla run out 19 (12m 15b 2x4 1x6) SR: 126.66

Mills to Levi, SIX, Levi counter-punches with a bottom-handed shovel to a half-volley on middle and sends it packing over the square leg fence

Southee to Levi, no run, Southee has clocked Levi on the helmet with a nasty bouncer on off, Levi was on the front foot trying to pull and watched it sail over the blade into the grille, Southee exchanges some words with the batsman but I don't believe he was checking on Levi's welfare

Southee to Levi, 1 run, bad ball down leg but Levi can't get it past fine leg and they have to settle for a single

Southee to de Villiers, no run, full ball on off is dug out down the pitch

Southee to de Villiers, 1 run, on-drives without much power towards Doug Bracewell and AB was out by miles if the throw had hit, the running has exhibited early signs of kamikaze tonight

Southee to Levi, OUT, this is slightly slower than usual as Southee rolls the fingers across it, it pitches on leg and Levi tries to scoop it over the long-on boundary but never gets hold of it and it settles safely in Bracewell's grasp

Hira to de Villiers, OUT, brilliant by Guptill! It was full outside off and AB absolutely slammed it low to short cover, where Guptill took it cleanly and made a difficult catch look extremely simple. AB asked Guptill whether he caught it and accepted his word, but the umpires went upstairs to check. After numerous replays memorable only for their inconclusiveness, the umpires finally send AB on his way.

Wow, how action-packed was that?? You wouldn't have thought so if you were just looking at the score of 147, but there were bursts of sixes, wickets and brilliant fielding scattered throughout. South Africa have fought back from their travails early on to post a defendable score, although they are probably 15 or so short. New Zealand were electric in the field and backed it up decently with the ball. Can their batsmen, and Guptill in particular, keep up their good form? Or will South Africa's bowlers dominate like they did against Canterbury? Join us shortly to find out.
