South Africa in New Zealand T20I Series - 3rd T20I

New Zealand v South Africa

South Africa won by 3 runs

Hello and welcome to a wet Eden Park in Auckland for the 3rd and deciding Twenty20 International between New Zealand and South Africa.

The rain was coming down just 15 minutes ago, but has eased significantly. Toss in 10 minutes, we're hoping for a 7.10pm start, fingers crossed the rain doesn't return.

The toss has been won by New Zealand, and they are bowling first. Brendon McCullum says his decision is partly due to the threat of rain. Jesse Ryder and Michael Bates come in for Colin de Grandhomme and an ill Kyle Mills. Ryder will bat in the middle order, marking a return to international cricket for the big Wellington left-hander.

South Africa make just the one change, an odd one considering the overhead conditions as spinning allrounder Robin Peterson replaces the fast bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who had taken a hat-trick in the tour match against Canterbury.

Avi Singh on the commentary console tonight, Binoy George in charge of scoring and Firdose Moonds, our South African correspondent, is on match report duties.

Today marks the first anniversary of the devastating Cantebury earthquakes which killed 185 people, damaged the New Zealand Cricket offices beyond repair and caused untold havoc to club grounds throughout the region. There will be a minute's silence and both sides will wear red ribbons tonight in memory.

Check out Firdose's preview while we wait for the contest to begin.

The teams, along with the New Zealand and English Women's teams who played earlier in the day, walk out for the minute's silence. A quiet hush goes around the ground as heads are bowed.

Richard Levi, he of fastest-hundred fame from the last game, and Hashim Amla are out in the middle ready to open the batting. Roneel Hira will open the bowling, in a slight variation from previous games where Nathan McCullum took first use of the pill

0.1

Hira to Levi, no run, full outside off and he hits the first ball with power straight to mid-off on the edge of the circle

0.2

Hira to Levi, 1 run, pushed through on leg and he gets off the mark with a work off the pads to deep midwicket

0.3

Hira to Amla, 1 run, stays back in the crease, spins sharply and takes the outer edge as Amla tries to defend, rolls through third man

0.4

Hira to Levi, FOUR, there we go, Levi absolutely butchers a full ball on middle back down the ground at Amla, who can't get out of the way, gets hit on the foot but it still has enough power to race to the straight boundary off the ricochet

0.5

Hira to Levi, no run, this slides down leg and he is hit on the pad trying to flick, loud appeal for lbw is not upheld

0.6

Hira to Levi, no run, squeezes out a faster ball on off back down the pitch to Hira

Michael Bates to open up from the other end

End of over 1 (6 runs) South Africa 6/0 (RR: 6.00)
RE Levi    5* (5b 1x4)      RM Hira    1-0-6-0
HM Amla    1* (1b)

1.1

Bates to Amla, FOUR, starts with a gentle loosener on the pads and all Amla has to do is get bat on ball to send it racing to the fine leg fence

1.2

Bates to Amla, no run, lets it go outside off as it angles across the right-hander

1.3

Bates to Amla, no run, pace and bounce there as Amla stayed rooted to the crease and tried to dab, missed by a considerable margin as it zipped over the top of his bat

1.4

Bates to Amla, FOUR, that is an on-drive of the purest quality from Amla, it was on the pads and with a hint of wrist, he eases this through midwicket and out to the fence

1.5

Bates to Amla, no run, again goes pushing at a ball angling away from him without the requisite feet movement required to lay bat on ball

1.6

Bates to Amla, no run, again reluctant to get forward to a ball on off and he jabs it to point from the crease

End of over 2 (8 runs) South Africa 14/0 (RR: 7.00)
HM Amla    9* (7b 2x4)      MD Bates    1-0-8-0
RE Levi    5* (5b 1x4)      RM Hira    1-0-6-0

Here is a surprise, another left-arm fast bowler comes on, James Franklin it is

2.2

Franklin to Levi, OUT, Levi is gone! Tried to repeat the shot but the ball was fractionally closer to middle and he didn't get as much bat on it, Nicol running round from midwicket races around towards deep backward square and takes an outstanding catch low while sliding

RE Levi c Nicol b Franklin 11 (9m 7b 1x4 1x6) SR: 157.14

2.3

Franklin to Amla, 1 run, Amla hangs back and defends a good length ball on leg into the pitch, they quickly rush through

2.5

Franklin to JA Morkel, 1 run, short outside off and Albie wristily whips to the right of mid-on

JA Morkel    1* (2b)      MD Bates    1-0-8-0

3.1

Bates to Amla, FOUR, this was on leg and a touch short, Amla chipped it over mid-on with the full face and it rushed off to the ludicrously short straight boundary

3.2

Bates to Amla, 1 run, he does it again but this time gets less elevation on it and sends it to the right of mid-off

3.3

Bates to JA Morkel, 1 run, this is outside off and moving away a touch, Albie backs away slightly and gets a thick outside edge past the slip in place down to third man

3.4

Bates to Amla, 1 run, this is on middle and leg and Amla gets on top of the wristy work down to fine leg

3.5

Bates to JA Morkel, SIX, that has been belted with considerable might, it was a short ball on middle and it sat up for Albie to pull cleanly across into the stands at cow corner

Bates to JA Morkel, 1 run, plays a short-arm pull and bottom edges it to square leg

End of over 4 (14 runs) South Africa 37/1 (RR: 9.25)

4.5

Southee to JA Morkel, OUT, Nicol takes his second catch to give fellow King's College attendee Southee his first wicket, Albie tried to smear a full ball outside off across the line and mistimed it badly as Nicol ran in from long-on to take it three-quarters of the way to the fence

4.6

Hira to Amla, 1 run, gets a thick outside edge to a full one outside off and it rolls to third man

Southee to bowl the crucial final over, can New Zealand keep South Africa to 160?

South Africa have had contributions throughout to end up on 165, which may be 15 or so short but is certainly defendable. Southee, Nicol and Bracewell were standouts with the ball for the home side, but can their batsmen back up their efforts to take the series? We will be back in 10 minutes for the series-deciding run chase.
