South Africa in New Zealand ODI Series - 2nd ODI

New Zealand v South Africa

South Africa won by 6 wickets (with 70 balls remaining)

Matt writes in: "About time Guptill stepped up against a major opposition today, someone in the top order needs to get a ton. At the same time the top order can't afford to get bogged down like last time. Hope NZ can make a contest out of this..."

Lonwabo Tsotsobe to start things off. Two slips in place

The players are making their way out to the middle. Rob Nicol and Martin Guptill are the two openers.

A bright, sunny day in Napier, no rain forecast so that's good. Barry Richards, doing the pitch report, thinks it's a 300-pitch. The boundaries here are short, so expect plenty of runs, the experts say.

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and opted to bowl. He reckons it is a pitch on which defending a score might be difficult. A big day for Brendon McCullum, this. He plays his 200th ODI today. Doug Bracewell and Nathan McCullum are out, Andy McKay and Tarun Nethula come in. For South Africa, Justin Ontong replaces an injured Graeme Smith at the top of the order.

Jim: "I thought Wright was building backbone in this NZ team but obviously not. Its got to come from the captain and the coach that getting totals against quality teams like South Africa needs thought and patience. Throwing away wickets like NZ has done is gutwrenching."

Mark: "There's no question that NZ have squandered a great platform. However Ellis and Southee should see this as an opportunity. Ellis has a first class century and Southee a test 50 so neither is a batting bunny. This is a golden opportunity to stand up and help NZ get to a defendable score."

Peter: "This is Napier - it's a road, possibly the easiest batting pitch in the country, especially with the short boundaries. 300 was minimum score. A great platform by McCullum and Guptill, but no one carries on to make the big score. Same old problems for NZ batters."

AM Ellis c Steyn b M Morkel 19 (54m 30b 0x4 1x6) SR: 63.33

Morne's first five-for in ODIs. New Zealand will be disappointed. McCullum and Guptill had set them up for a challenging score on a good batting track with a century stand but it all began to fall apart in the Powerplay. First, with the fall of Williamson and McCullum in quick time, and then the immediate dismissal of Ryder. A score of 300 - considered to be a par score on this pitch - looked possible at one point, but a collapse of 8 for 67 has left the hosts in trouble. South Africa will back themselves to chase this and secure a series win; it will be a difficult task for New Zealand to surprise us all. Let's see what happens in the chase in 30 minutes time. Join us then.
