Zimbabwe in New Zealand ODI Series - 1st ODI

New Zealand v Zimbabwe

New Zealand won by 90 runs

Good morning and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the opening ODI between New Zealand and Zimbabwe from a cloudy, but rain-free, Dunedin.

Important news from the ground is that Zimbabwe have won the toss and have chosen to bowl first.

The teams are as follows:

New Zealand: Rob Nicol, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (c-wk), Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Dean Brownlie, Nathan McCullum, Andrew Ellis, Doug Bracewell, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Jacob Oram (12th man).

Zimbabwe: Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Regis Chakabva, Brendan Taylor (c), Tatenda Taibu (wk), Malcolm Waller, Elton Chigumbura, Keegan Meth, Shingirai Masakadza, Ray Price, Kyle Jarvis, Tino Mawoyo (12th man).

Plenty of excitement in the New Zealand camp as the Canterbury contingent of Tom Latham, Dean Brownlie and Andrew Ellis make their ODI debuts today.

Brownlie has already played 4 Tests and performed creditably over in Australia.

Tom Latham is a keeper-batsman, son of the former New Zealand opening batsman and 'dibbly-dobbly' Rod. He has scored heavily in the Ford Trophy, New Zealand's domestic one-day competition, this season, and is a 'gut' pick by coach John Wright, who will be hoping that his touch continues to bring luck to the side.

Andrew Ellis is an all-rounder who has been around the New Zealand domestic scene for nearly a decade, but has been in particularly fine form over the last two seasons in all three forms of the game. This season he has stepped it up a level and has scored runs and taken wickets by the bucketload, again in all forms, and has demanded his inclusion with consistent performances.

While we wait for proceedings to begin, have a look at the preview by our African correspondent, the splendid Firdose Moonda.

Those of you who live in the Twitter world should definitely be following our Twitter feed @ESPNcricinfo. As a bonus, you can also follow me, Avi Singh, @MannerOfSpeakin. I will be on scoring and commentary duties for the duration of today's match.

Keegan Meth to open the bowling, Nicol to face. Here we go!

0.1

0.1

Meth to Nicol, no run, first legal ball of the match is solidly defended down the pitch on off stump

0.2

Meth to Nicol, no run, swings away a touch and skews the drive out to cover

0.3

Meth to Nicol, no run, nicely times a firm push to a ball on middle stump, mid-on comes round to field and fires a throw at the non-striker's end where Guptill had backed up a touch too far but the throw misses, might have been in anyhow

0.4

Meth to Nicol, no run, again plays firmly down to mid-on, no running dramas on this occasion

0.5

Meth to Nicol, OUT, Zimbabwe strike in the first over! Full outside off and inviting the drive, Nicol eagerly chases it but is fooled by the late swing and gets a healthy edge which carries to the jubilant Zimbabwean skipper at first slip

RJ Nicol c Taylor b Meth 0 (3m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

In comes the stand-in New Zealand skipper earlier than he would have liked

0.6

Meth to BB McCullum, 3 runs, starts with a nice flowing drive to a wide swinging ball outside off, threads it through the gap but the outfield is a tad slow after rain throughout the week and it holds up before the rope

Kyle Jarvis to open up from the other end

End of over 1 (4 runs) New Zealand 4/1
BB McCullum    3* (1b)      KO Meth    1-0-4-1
MJ Guptill    0* (0b)

Taibu comes up to the stumps

4.5

Meth to Guptill, no run, this is very wide of off and he doesn't offer a stroke

Apologies for the loss of commentary during the last few overs, technical issues have now been sorted. New Zealand would be disappointed with the stop-start nature of their innings, many batsmen made a start without going on. Zimbabwe would be happy on the other hand with a significantly improved bowling effort which has given them a chance. But can their batsmen shake off the horrors of Napier? Find out at 3.10pm local time.
