Zimbabwe in New Zealand T20I Series - 1st T20I

New Zealand v Zimbabwe

New Zealand won by 7 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to ESPNcricinfo's live coverage of the opening Twenty20 International between New Zealand and Zimbabwe from Eden Park in Auckland.

News from the toss is that Zimbabwe have won and have finally chosen to bat first. Brendan Taylor says they are batting first because they weren't successful chasing in the ODIs. Forster Mutizwa, Hamilton Masakadza and Keegan Meth come in to the team, and Taylor says he will open the batting tonight.

For New Zealand, who would have bowled first anyway had they won the toss, in come the Auckland trio of Roneel Hira, Colin de Grandhomme and Michael Bates for their T20I debuts. Brendon McCullum says he will bat at number 3 today.

Avi Singh with you again tonight for all the action, with Andrew Fernando providing you match reports.

"How does a boxer find motivation to keep throwing punches when his opponent is cowering, bleeding and just about begging for mercy?" That is what Firdose Moonda wonders about the New Zealanders. Read on in the full preview.

Managed to get in touch with our favourite Zimbabwean, Liam Brickhill! He might have left us, but is still as passionate about the team as ever. This is what he thinks of the tour so far:

"What carnage last night ... It's been a really troubling tour. There were always going to be teething issues with the team's first tour to the 'West' in, oh, eight years or so but I don't think anyone expected it to be quite this bad.

Unfortunately one can't blame conditions for Zimbabwe's performances. The non-selection of Vusi Sibanda was a massive blunder, and of course there are other selection issues as well (I'm looking at you, Stu Matsikenyeri). The one good thing is that this tour must surely have been a massive reality check. The unfortunate truth is that Zimbabwe are simply unable to put XI cricketers of international quality on the field, and may well be unable to do so for some time. There are good things happening in cricket back in Zim, no doubt, but it's not all peaches and cream. I had an interesting conversation with a former ZC employee when I was in Zim recently. He had worked really closely with the team, and his feeling was that the squad lacked unity. As he put it, they're eleven guys who happen to be wearing the same colour shirts, rather than a unified team. Which is pretty worrying. There is good happening, but a lot of the changes at ZC have been cosmetic.

So. Where to now for Zim? The drop in fielding standards is absolutely unacceptable. They've got to stop trying to play like what they perceive to be 'proper' cricket teams. They're never going to be England. Or New Zealand for that matter. They've got to stick to what they're good at, and perfect their own version of the game. There's more talent in spin than seam in the domestic game, and when Utseya and Price were the leaders of the bowling attack back at the beginning of 2010, they were at least more able to keep control of the game. Sure, wickets in NZ tend not to favour spin, but Guptill is weaker against the slower bowlers and the left field tactic of opening with one of the spinners would at least have forced New Zealand to re-think their gameplan.

I hope they'll put up more of a fight in the T20s, but I'm not holding my breath."

Zimbabwe have finally shown what they are capable of. Hamilton Masakadza dominated early on to make a half-century and he was assisted by a devastating blitz from Elton Chigumbura in the death overs as his side posted a competitive score. New Zealand will still back themselves but will be disappointed with the lacklustre fielding and end-overs bowling. The spinners were effective though and Hira did well on debut. Can Zimbabwe improve dramatically on their previous two bowling efforts? Find out soon.
