Graham Cowan, the former New Zealand umpire and cricket administrator, has died at the age of 71 after a short illness. Cowan stood in 46 first-class matches, and five one-day internationals between 1989 and 1991, all in New Zealand.
He also played the roles of selector and treasurer for the West Coast Cricket Association, administrator with Auckland Cricket, chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association, and chairman of Northland Cricket.
New Zealand Cricket National Umpire Manager Rodger McHarg praised Cowan's contribution to umpiring. "It was an honour and privilege to have known and umpired with Graham," McHarg said. "His contribution and service to cricket, and umpiring in particular, must not be under estimated." .
