Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, is in an induced coma in hospital after being assaulted twice late on Wednesday evening in Christchurch. Ryder, 28, is in intensive care after suffering a fractured skull, which Christchurch Police believe happened in the second of the two attacks.

The first assault took place at about 12.30am outside the Aikman's Bar in a Christchurch suburb Merivale, where Ryder had been out with Wellington team-mates and friends following their loss to Canterbury to mark the end of the season. The second attack occurred minutes later at the entrance to the car park of a McDonald's across the road, where the other Wellington players had gone to order food.

"An altercation has taken place on the footpath outside Aikman's involving Jesse and a group of at least two other males. The altercation was brief," Detective Senior Sergeant Brian Archer told reporters in Christchurch. "Following that incident, Ryder and two other persons walked across the road towards McDonald's, where his Wellington team-mates had been purchasing some food. A second altercation has taken place at the entrance to the McDonald's car park, involving one of the males from the earlier group.

"In that incident it appears Jesse has been the victim of a serious assault and has suffered head injuries as a result. Ambulance and police were called about at 12.44am. Jesse was taken to hospital where he remains in intensive care.

"The hospital advise that Jesse is in a critical condition, he is in an induced coma as a result of suffering multiple injuries. He is still being assessed for a number of injuries and we are not prepared to discuss that any further."

Archer said that while police had "positive lines of inquiry", they had not yet identified Ryder's attackers. CCTV footage from Aikman's and McDonald's is being reviewed, he said. "We believe at least 10 or more people have witnessed some of the events, and we've been speaking to witnesses throughout the day. There are CCTV cameras in the area and we're going through the process of downloading and reviewing that footage.

"At the moment we have not identified the people involved in the incident, but we do have positive lines of inquiry, and we will be focusing on identifying and finding those people, and speaking to them.

"Although the Wellington players had been at a licensed premises during the evening, at this stage there is no evidence that alcohol was a contributing factor to the assault. We are asking any witnesses to contact police and calling for people involved to come forward and speak to us about it."

Ryder, who played 18 Tests for New Zealand before going into a self-imposed exile from international cricket for the last year, was due to leave for India on Friday to join the Delhi Daredevils ahead of the start of the IPL season on April 3. In January, he ruled out a return for New Zealand, despite his impressive domestic form.

Before embarking on his sabbatical from international cricket, Ryder had been dropped from New Zealand's ODI side after breaking team protocols concerning alcohol. In 2008, again in Christchurch, he injured his hand when putting it through a glass window after a drinking session.

Peter Clinton, the Cricket Wellington chief executive, said Ryder was not in breach of his contract by being at the bar, and also that no team rules had been breached over the course of the night.

"It was not a violation of his contract, no," Clinton said. "There are some alcohol protocols around the team, as there are with other sports. My understanding of the events as described by the police was that those protocols were met last evening, so from that point of view we don't have any direct concerns that Jesse was with his team-mates last night."

Heath Mills, chief executive of the New Zealand Players Association, said numerous cricketers around the country were in shock at the news of the assault, and Ryder's serious condition.

"Obviously the cricket community's very shocked at what's happened to Jesse. He's obviously in a serious condition," Mills said. "It's a sad day for us, a number of players around the country are in shock, our focus now is on Jesse and his well-being."

The Daredevils' team director, TA Sekar, called the incident "very unfortunate". He had spoken to Ryder two days ago. "He was looking forward to come, and he was supposed to board the flight for Delhi tomorrow," Sekar said. According to him, the franchise had bid for Ryder because he was a worthy batsman to replace Kevin Pietersen who, before he got injured, was contracted to play 11 matches in the season. Sekar said the franchise would seek a replacement soon.

David White, the New Zealand Cricket chief executive, expressed his sorrow at events via a statement: "We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket's thoughts are with him and his family."

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor added: "Thinking of you mate [Jesse] Ryder." Ryder's manager, Aaron Klee, wrote on his Twitter page: "Thanks for the calls and msgs of support for Jesse. Just heading to [Christchurch] to see him."

Posted by SDCLFC on (March 28, 2013, 23:46 GMT)

Was wondering about why when so many people intervened to help the first time, that someone didn't get him inside to look after him and keep him safe or stay with him thus preventing the second attack. Obviously when you've been jumped your instinct of flight just wants to get you out of there. But it could well have been his thinking was that he was in trouble and needed to get to his teammates for help which stopped him from thinking get inside, get safe. Truly, truly horrible thing

It is indeed a sad news. Anyone remotely linked to cricket would express shock at the news and would offer prayers to the player/ his family and hope his speedy recovery. With matters of life and death other things become unimportant.

On that note it is is sadder to read the comments of Daredevils director, Who says it is unfortunate incident and goes on to discuss why the choose Ryder (as replacement for Kevin P) and now they will continue to look for another person. Empathy.

Being a tough bloke, I'm hoping that Jesse puts on a big fight here and makes it through, and hopefully has a speedy recovery and contiunes to pile up runs! COME ON BIG MAN!!!

A matter of weeks ago I was praying to have this man back playing for NZ, and now I find myself praying for his life and that he is the same man when he recovers from his injuries.

I wonder if this will make our media in NZ sit up and take notice - they have been harassing Ryder for years, turning him into a target and analysing his every move. Even though our thoughts first and foremost are to home Jesse is OK, I feel that some people in the media need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask if they have in some small way contributed to this cowardly attack.

Jesse, firstly please recover and be well, and if you do that, please take the chance to play every game like there might not be another one.

Posted by ROXSPORT on (March 28, 2013, 13:48 GMT)

@ Posted by on (March 28, 2013, 12:17 GMT): "Induced coma" means they are trying to minimize the brain swelling, which inevitably occurs after a head injury. Coma is induced therapeutically so as to minimize the brain's requirement of oxygen, since the oxygen supply to the brain decreases with increasing swelling. Most probably, they will keep him in this state for a couple of days before they try awakening him. Till then, he will stay on artificial respiratory support. Anyway, all the best & speedy recovery. Hope to see you soon on the cricket field again (not in the least because I am a Daredevil's supporter).

Shocking and sad news. Thoughts are with Jesse and family. Almost equally as shocking is the fact that it appears one of the first questions the Cricket Wellington chief exec had to answer was "Was he in violation of his contract?". A man is fighting for his life, for heaven's sake.

Posted by MWaqqar on (March 28, 2013, 9:49 GMT)

What a tragedy in a civilised country like NZ. Pray for early and full recovery Jesse. See you very soon again playing. Hope you will get justice and the criminals get their due punishment.

I am cricket fan from Pakistan. and I am very sad to read this news. i hope he gets well very soon. all the wished and prayers for him.

Posted by   on (March 28, 2013, 9:43 GMT)

According to the news over here , none of the team were "drunk" and that it was just an act of cowardice and thuggery from a bunch of lowlifes. Christchurch is not a bad place but acts like this make me embarrassed to live here.He has had troubles in the past but in an incident such as this it is all sort of irrelevant when a persons life is potentially in danger. I hope that Jesse makes a full recovery and all cricket fans and people alike will be wishing the same.

Get well soon Jesse. U r a great player. May the culprits get deserving punishments.

Posted by Big_Maxy_Walker on (March 28, 2013, 8:35 GMT)

that's horrible news for cricket fans. Ryder on his day is one of the best young batsman around. He reminds me of cricketers of the 80s where toughness and talent was all that mattered, not having to be a gym nut and teetotaler. At least he got games for nz, in Australia we have mark cosgrove, a very talented guy. But the aussie selectors wont pick him because of fitness. Since when do you have to be great athlete to be a successful cricketer. Look at tubby taylor, boon, merv hughes, border etc.

Added you in my daily prayer. You will be fine soon.

Shocking !! Well just do not know why all this keeps on happening with Jessey....he is really unlucky chap....extremely good talent....all those responsible must be arrested and given strict treatment as per NZ laws.

On cricketing terms , this is from an Indian, world cricket and NZ cricket need jessey like characters....Get well soon dude.

These guys must be held accountable for their crimes. This act of violence could end Jessie Ryders career. Such a shame. My thoughts are with him.

Get well soon Jesse. Wish to see you on a cricket field soon. Our prayers are with you!!

The heart goes out to Jesse Ryder and his family. Life is more important than cricket. Hope he survives this vicious assault done on him. Hope those assaulters get caught and are punished as severely as deemed by law. On the other hand, Jesse Ryder is a great batsman and treat to watch when in full flow. Delhi Daredevils will miss him sorely now that he will not be available along with Pietersen injured and Ross Taylor not available. With Jayawardene recovering from a fractured finger as well, things don't look too rosy for the DD at the moment. My playing XI for the DD's will be: Sehwag, Warner, Unmukt Chand, Kedar Jadhav, Naman Ojha, Andre Russell, Irfan Pathan, Johan Botha, Ajit Agarkar, Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav. Hope that Jayawardene becomes available as early as possible and I would once again like Ryder to survive and recover from the coma and come back on the cricket field as soon as possible.

I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he keeps away doing such acts in the future.

You can pull through this Jesse! I hope your cricketing ability isn't affected as a result of this. Anyway, we are all hoping for your recovery.
