Jason Holder, the West Indies fast bowler, has signed with Otago Volts for the final of the HRV Cup, to be played in Hamilton on Saturday. The Otago Cricket Association (OCA) came to the decision in light of the unavailability of Nathan McCullum, Jimmy Neesham and Jesse Ryder because of international commitments. Ian Butler is also still recovering from injury, prompting Otago's need for reinforcements.

OCA chief executive, Ross Dykes, was pleased with the acquisition, and felt that the experience of the bowler would come in handy. "Jason was keen to be involved," Dykes said. "He has IPL experience and is obviously bowling-fit as a result of the current series [New Zealand v West Indies]."

Holder is already in New Zealand as part of the ongoing limited-overs series, which comes to a close on Wednesday with a Twenty20 in Wellington. He was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad for both the IPL and Champions League T20 last year. He has taken 29 wickets in 35 T20 matches, at an average of 29.13, with an economy rate of 7.33.

Why not drop the entire Otago team and just play the WI team?

See how they go against a domestic NZ team instead...

Interesting. But doesn't a team such as Otago have a capable B-team or reserve squad to pull from. Place faith in your own. Can't go wrong with giving one of yours a shot at glory.

Stupidity personified .... As I watch both openers for the Hurricanes stumped off Lyon in the BB League...Yes Otago needs a bowler but a spinner not a medium fast pace bowler who in all probability will not be available for Otago if indeed they reach the CL.....Lets hope Canterbury beat the Knights cause Otago will then have a chance but what about NZ Cricket ...with one place open in the CL for NZ and the rewards for success what does NZ Cricket do ...programs the Local T20 championship finals right at the start of the Indian tour ensuring Otago and Northern are significantly weakened ...Especially Otago ...Probably a reason why Rutherford is not in the NZ team cause then 5 players would be not available ....I support Otago not New Zealand Cricket ....and I feel shafted by what appears to me as a deliberate ploy by NZ Cricket to weaken Otago...MK Invercargill New Zealand

A young man with a great future.

Good luck to Holder. I think their initial target Andre Russell would have been a better option in this format due to his batting despite his display in the first T20

Great acquisition for Otago. Holder has been most impressive in the games he's played on this tour thus far.
