Australia tour of New Zealand, 3rd ODI: New Zealand v Australia at Hamilton, Feb 20, 2007
New Zealand won by 1 wicket (with 3 balls remaining)
20 February 2007 - day/night match (50-over match)

Here come the Australian openers and the New Zealanders. The umpires, Aleem Dar and Gary Baxter, have taken their places. Daryl Tuffey, who took a pasting at Eden Park, has the ball on his home ground. Two slips in place. Hayden on strike. Right, here we go...

Hello hello, wherever you may be at this hour, and thanks for tuning in to Cricinfo's live coverage of the final one-day international of the 2006-07 Chappell-Hadlee Series. I'm Jamie Alter, and its my pleasure to take you through the day's action at Hamilton's Seddon Park.

Toss and teams: Australia have won the toss and will bat. They have handed Western Australia's Adam Voges his maiden ODI cap while Mitchell Johnson gets a game at Glenn McGrath's expense.

New Zealand are without their two most experienced bowlers, Shane Bond and Daniel Vettori, for today's dead rubber, the former having had a tight hamstring after bowling nine overs on Sunday while the latter's troublesome back is causing more discomfort. Bond, almost unplayable this series, has been replaced by left-arm bowler James Franklin while Vettori makes way for Jeetan Patel, the offspinner.

The equation: If you've been following this series, you'll know that New Zealand have already won it, and that Australia are on a losing streak of four games. New Zealand have never achieved a clean sweep over Australia, and a perfect chase would give them something to cheer about on the back of a not-so-impressive CB Series recently.

This game holds the opportunity for Australia to salvage some pride ahead of that little tournament the ICC have coming up next month....the umm...er...just had it...yes, the World Cup, thats it.

And listen to this - if Australia lose today, they will head to the World Cup on their worst losing streak in a decade. Ouch. Australia's worst run in ODI history is six losses between September and November 1996.

He said, she said
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming feels Australia's slump in the limited-overs game means the World Cup, which starts in exactly three weeks, is wide open. "That's just where international cricket is at the moment. We're going into a World Cup where on any given day there's up to eight teams that can win it. I don't think the world is focusing on Australia. I think there are other teams in West Indies conditions that will be just as dangerous."

Mike Hussey, Australia's stand-in captain, said losing the CB Series to England and then the two losses in New Zealand had just changed the way Australia looked at the World Cup. "Now we become the hunter," he said. "We'll be working as hard as we always do to get that number one spot back."

And elsewhere, vice-captain Adam Gilchrist didn't mince words on the whole scenario: "I'm going to be brutally honest here and say I don't think too many people wanted it on at all. We've had a very hectic summer. We had a brilliant summer in Test cricket, but then we fell away in the one-day series, and that was very disappointing."

0.1

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, short ball to begin with, Hayden's not on the ball and pulls into the ground and the ball rolls to short fine leg

0.2

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, but this is better from Hayden, as he rocks back to another short-pitched delivery outside off stump and pulls through midwicket for one out to the sweepers on the boundary

0.3

Tuffey to Watson, 1 run, good length delivery on middle and leg, he just taps that into the on side and sets off the single

0.4

Tuffey to Hayden, 2 runs, back of a length down leg stump, Hayden eases it off the pads wide of square leg for an easy couple of runs

0.5

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, better ball, moving away from Hayden on a good length, who plants the front foot forward and shoulders arms

0.6

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good stuff again, comes back in from outside off stump and carries on over the top of off stump as Hayden shoulders arms again

End of over 1 (4 runs) Australia 4/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • ML Hayden 3 (5b)
    • SR Watson 1 (1b)
    • DR Tuffey 1-0-4-0

Matt Kelly writes in regarding Gilchrist's comments: "Adam Gilchrist must forget how lucky he is to play for Australia. Ask Voges, Haddin, Hodge, Hogg and Jaques how they feel about having to play a series for Australia, I bet they aren't winging. Maybe Gilchrist should retire if he is so sick of playing the best game in the world."

1.1

Franklin to Watson, no run, fullish, swinging delivery that moves well past him outside off stump, no need to play at that

1.2

Franklin to Watson, no run, moving across him off the scrambled seam, but much closer to off stump and Watson shoulders arms to that

1.3

Franklin to Watson, no run, even closer to the stumps and now Watson has to play at it, coming forward on the move and then defending into the covers

1.4

Franklin to Watson, no run, lovely ball! Angled across him on a sweet length and Watson pokes at it tentatively, getting beaten by the movement

1.5

Franklin to Watson, 1 run, the attempted yorker goes awry, coming in a tad fuller on middle and leg than he would've liked, and Watson chips it into midwicket for a quick single

1.6

Franklin to Hayden, no run, fullish, outside off stump, and Hayden judges it to perfection and shoulders arms

End of over 2 (1 run) Australia 5/0 (RR: 2.50)

    • ML Hayden 3 (6b)
    • SR Watson 2 (6b)
    • JEC Franklin 1-0-1-0
    • DR Tuffey 1-0-4-0

Looks like a fine sunny day and a pitch with a little bit in it for the bowlers. No shortage of runs, though, if you get stuck in.

2.1

Tuffey to Watson, no run, back of a length outside off stump and moving in, Watson gets behind the line and defends to the off

2.2

Tuffey to Watson, no run, back of a length and wider this time, though its quicker - 134ks - and Watson has to check his attempted cut to guide it to point

2.3

Tuffey to Watson, 1 run, shorter and wider, Watson neatly runs that wide of backward point for one out to Franklin at wide third man

2.4

Tuffey to Hayden, FOUR, full on the legs and Hayden clips that past square leg out to Fulton, running around from the deep, who just cant time his dive right and the ball wins that race

2.5

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, better stuff, on a length just around off stump, and Hayden has to desist the flick and come forward to defend instead

2.6

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good length outside off stump and he checks his drive back to Tuffey

Andy Matthews replys to Matt: "Matt can't be serious, after the hectic summer the Aussie's had there was no need for a nothing series in NZ directly after the tri-series. Players need some rest time before the world cup, whats the point of watching a series where the best 5-6 players from both sides combined don't play?"

End of over 3 (5 runs) Australia 10/0 (RR: 3.33)

    • ML Hayden 7 (9b 1x4)
    • SR Watson 3 (9b)
    • DR Tuffey 2-0-9-0
    • JEC Franklin 1-0-1-0
3.1

Franklin to Watson, no run, short of a length outside off stump, Watson stands up and plays it late, in front of point, but resists going for the run as Vincent swoops in and fires a throw back to the 'keeper

3.2

Franklin to Watson, no run, back of a length outside off stump, Watson punches that nicely down the ground and sets off, but Patel at mid-off dives full stretch and stops it

3.3

Franklin to Watson, no run, wider and fuller outside off stump, Watson gets down on one knee and drives, but gets beaten

3.4

Franklin to Watson, 2 runs, almost! Watson gets ambitious, getting under a back of a length delivery on middle and leg that skids onto him, heaving it up in the air and luckily it lands safely in no man's land out near long-off

3.5

Franklin to Watson, no run, good length on middle and leg and he checks the drive to mid-on

3.6

Franklin to Watson, 2 runs, a tad fuller on the stumps, Watson walks into a defensive push back past the bowler but the ball slows up near the ropes and its just two

End of over 4 (4 runs) Australia 14/0 (RR: 3.50)

    • SR Watson 7 (15b)
    • ML Hayden 7 (9b 1x4)
    • JEC Franklin 2-0-5-0

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, overpitched, he gets to the pitch and drives nicely but cant beat Taylor at cover

4.3

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, down leg stump, he clips it just in front of short fine leg and calls for the run, Watson replies with ease and thats one

4.4

Tuffey to Watson, FOUR, short and wide from Tuffey, and Watson gets up on the toes and cracks it in front of square for four, smack of the middle of the horizontal bat

4.5

Tuffey to Watson, 1 run, short of a good length on middle and off, up he goes again and just rolls the wrists on it to pick up an easy single in front of square leg

4.6

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, good length outside off stump, he leans into a soft drive in front of mid-off and calls for the quick single

Biggles says: "In reply to Andy - Since when is the Chappell / Hadlee series considered to be a "nothing series". As for being a hectic season, I'm sure there's alot of people who work a lot harder for a lot less and would like one month in three off as well...."

End of over 5 (7 runs) Australia 21/0 (RR: 4.20)

    • ML Hayden 9 (13b 1x4)
    • SR Watson 12 (17b 1x4)
    • DR Tuffey 3-0-16-0
    • JEC Franklin 2-0-5-0

5.2

Franklin to Hayden, no run, back of a length outside off stump, no real movement, and Hayden shoulders arms

Offers Steve: "I think the Aussies have become so obsessed with their own 'world series' that they have forgotten whats important. Players like Chappell and Hadlee are legends to each country and represent our respective countries proud history. If thats not worth playing for and sending your best players, they deserve to lose, the records are still going to count!"

5.3

Franklin to Hayden, FOUR, short of a length and moving down the legs, just where he likes 'em, all he has to do is clip it off the pads backward of square and in the gap to pick up four more

5.4

Franklin to Hayden, no run, good length outside off stump, he leaves it be for McCullum to collect

6.3

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good length on middle and leg, he flicks into midwicket but cant beat the man there

6.4

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good length and pacier on off stump, he comes forward and works it to the on side where Tuffey dives full stretch to his left but cant get a hand to it, mid-on moves in quickly

6.5

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, pitched up outside off stump, fractionally, and he drives it to mid-off

6.6

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good stop! Hayden drives on off middle and off stump towards mid-on, where an energetic Patel throws himself full length and saves runs

Mike: "In agreeing to play Chapple-Hadlee series Aussie should have reduced bloated Tri-Series by 3 games, meaning Aussies would only have one additional game. That would upset some locals somewhere, plus venue beer sales, so wasn't done. Likewise, resting some players once they were certain to be in final would've been clever, with delaying their break only showing Aussies don't place overseas tours (okay stetching the tour idea here) ahead of yet more meaningless games in Sydney & Melbourne."

End of over 7 (1 run) Australia 30/0 (RR: 4.28)

    • ML Hayden 17 (24b 3x4)
    • SR Watson 13 (18b 1x4)

Franklin to Hayden, no run, overpitched outside off stump and he drives it straight to short extra cover

No slips in place now, gully and short fine leg there but

7.5

Franklin to Hayden, 1 run, back of a length outside off stump, he gets onto the backfoot and opens the face, running it down to third man for one

7.6

Franklin to Watson, 2 runs, short of a good length on middle and leg, whipped off the backfoot through midwicket for two

End of over 8 (4 runs) Australia 34/0 (RR: 4.25)

8.3

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, back of a length on leg stump, easy stuff for Hayden to work into the leg side for one

8.4

Tuffey to Watson, no run, back of a length on leg stump, he tries the tip-and-run but bowler and 'keeper are quick

David comments: "Sick of hearing players whinging about having too many matches. We don't see soccer & tennis players complaining, those being more physically demanding sports. These players are representing their country and should be proud of it, considering the amount of money they are paid. Also, we don't hear them complaining when they go overseas to play county cricket during off season. I am sure Gilchrist wouldn't have made such commenst if Australia won the last two. Its only when things go wrong is when they start whinging to justify their poor performance.

8.5

Tuffey to Watson, 1 run, moves in off a length and he adjusts to run it fine, backward point moves in but they take on Taylor's arm for the single

8.6

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, good length outside off stump, he comes to the pitch and drives past mid-off for long-off to come forward and collect

End of over 9 (3 runs) Australia 37/0 (RR: 4.11)

    • SR Watson 17 (24b 1x4)
    • JEC Franklin 5-0-25-0
    • DR Tuffey 5-0-20-0
10.1

Tuffey to Watson, 1 run, back of a length outside leg stump, Watson's already backed away, in hopes of whacking one over cover, and has to adjust to nudge it around the corner for one

10.2

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, shortish length outside off stump, Hayden's coming forward and has to adjust to steer it to backward point

10.3

Tuffey to Hayden, no run, good length delivery on off stump, a tad slower perhaps, and Hayden defends solidly off the front foot

10.5

10.6

Tuffey to Watson, FOUR, bang, thats four! The slower one is just overpitched enough for Watson to free the front leg and smash that down the ground cleanly

Gary says: "In response to David: Soccer players are very often rested and rotated to avoid exhaustion. Speaking from experience in both sports I would also say it's much easier to play 90 minutes of soccer 2-3 times a week, compared to 18-20 hours of cricket."

End of over 11 (6 runs) Australia 51/0 (RR: 4.63)

    • SR Watson 22 (27b 2x4)
    • ML Hayden 29 (39b 5x4)

11.5

Gillespie to Watson, no run, again he drops short but is lucky to get away with it, as Watson's checked backfoot drive doesnt beat cover

11.6

Gillespie to Watson, FOUR, lands this one fuller and wider and Watson goes through with the flashy backfoot drive, as he knew there was no slip, and the ball races away off the thick edge for four more

End of over 12 (13 runs) Australia 64/0 (RR: 5.33)

    • ML Hayden 30 (40b 5x4)

After the World Cup Australia have like 6 months off. Comparing that to England, and when do england get time off. Never, because there seasons are in direct contrast to most of the other test nations so are either playing at home or away constantly."

Well, we've seen New Zealand chase down 336 with an over and more to spare, so whats a safe total for Australia?

44.2

Gillespie to Hussey, SIX, Hussey joins in on the fun, coming down the track to a fullish delivery, making it fuller, and short-arm-punching it flat over long-on for six, shot!

44.3

Gillespie to Hussey, OUT, this time he's gone! Hussey again dances down to a full delivery, but gets under and rolls the wrists on it, the ball takes the leading edge and the ball pops up high in the air for McCullum to call for it and safely pouch it

Five overs to go, Hayden on 146. Do I hear 200? Anyone for 200?

45.1

Patel to Hayden, 1 run, fired in full outside off stump, he swings across the line with one hand and gets it to mid-on

45.3

Patel to White, 1 run, fired in again, on the stumps, he comes down but isnt to the pitch, works it to mid-on for one

Gillespie to White, SIX, even better! White tees-off and sends this dinger sailing miles over long-off and thats the 15th six of the innings so far, carnage!

46.4

47.5

Tuffey to Voges, 1 run, good length outside off stump, steered towards point for the single

47.6

    • ML Hayden 163 (158b 9x4 9x6)
    • AC Voges 11 (5b 1x6)
    • DR Tuffey 9-0-54-1

48.1

Gillespie to Voges, 1 run, full delivery outside off stump, he gets the bat down and pushes into the covers

Last over coming up. Hayden closing in on Mark Waugh's 173 as the highest Aussie score in an ODI. The most sixes in a match is 26, during that game at Johannesburg. We have 16 already and there's one innings to go.

49.1

Tuffey to Hayden, SIX, A one-handed six, would you believe it! What a small ground! Hayden gets under a low full toss and sends it over long-off for his tenth sixth, and thats ridiculous!

49.2

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, good length outside off stump, chipped over cover for one

49.3

Tuffey to Voges, 1 run, overpitched outside off stump, driven down to long-off

Hayden needs one six to equal the world record.

49.4

Tuffey to Hayden, 1 run, full toss outside off stump, he swings a one-handed shot on that and will only get one to midwicket

49.5

Tuffey to Voges, 1 run, fullish delivery outside off stump, Voges slogs that down to long-on to get Hayden back on strike for the final ball

Can he do it?

49.6

Tuffey to Hayden, FOUR, not six, but four! Hayden slams another one-handed shot smack down the ground over Tuffey's head for four, and ends up with the highest individual score for an Australian batsman in an ODI, and he carried his bat to boot!

Hayden's good innings has carried Australia to 346. He was sluggish, had a couple close calls in the field, but smoked some super dingers and has batted all through the innings, despite injury to the foot, to take his side to a very competitive total. I was going to add another 'very' in there but then we've seen, in this series and last year's version, how New Zealand have chased down totals close to this. I will reiterate again just how easy it is to clear the ropes on the grounds we've seen in New Zealand. I'm not picking a favorite just yet, but I will put my money down on the world-record 26 sixes falling in this match. Just another 11 will break that.

Do join me again at around 18:30 local, 05:30 GMT for New Zealand's chase and Australia's attempt at avoiding a whitewash...or is it blackwash? I'll be back with all the action.

End of over 50 (14 runs) Australia 346/5

    • AC Voges 16 (10b 1x6)
