Bangladesh in New Zealand Test Series - 1st Test

New Zealand v Bangladesh

New Zealand won by 9 wickets

Overs 0-50

Right, we're almost ready for the start. Chris Martin has the new ball. The ground looks like a village green.

10.30
Toss: Daniel Vettori has won the toss and not surprisingly, New Zealand are bowling first. Vettori said at the toss that the bowlers would be looking to exploit the conditions early on, keeping in mind that this is a new pitch.

Pitch: The pitch has been the center of attention in the build-up to this Test after it was criticised after a State Championship match between Auckland and Otago ended in two days with 34 wickets tumbling. The surface today has an even covering of grass and appears quite hard. The first hour of play will be the best for the seamers and if the sun stays out, the batsmen should enjoy themselves. It could however get slower and lower as the Test progresses.

Teams
Bangladesh: 1 Junaid Siddique, 2 Tamim Iqbal, 3 Habibul Bashar, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Shahriar Nafees, 6 Aftab Ahmed, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza, 9 Shahadat Hossain, 10 Sajidul Islam, 11 Enamul Haque jnr

New Zealand: 1 Matthew Bell, 2 Craig Cumming, 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Stephen Fleming, 5 Mathew Sinclair, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Brendon McCullum, 8 Daniel Vettori, 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Chris Martin, 11 Iain O'Brien

Bangladesh have unleashed three new faces at the Test level, brining in left-arm seamer Sajidul Islam and openers Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique. Tamim and Junaid are more familiar faces, having played in the one-dayers, while Sajidul, who plays for Barisal Division, makes his international debut.

Michael Mason misses out for New Zealand, paving the way for seamer Iain O'Brien. 10.15: Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's ball-by-ball coverage of the first Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh at the University Oval in Dunedin. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran, your commentator through this match. Also, here's a very good morning to my fellow crew members Jamie Alter (on bulletin) and Kiran, (on scoring).

10.20: We're roughly ten minutes away from the toss and we'll update you as soon as we receive information.

International cricket has moved away from Carisbrook, Dunedin's traditional venue, and the action has shifted to Test cricket's newest venue, the University Oval. This is the 96th Test venue, by the way.

At 88 for 4 this was clearly New Zealand's session. The pitch has played quite well so far for the batsmen, with consistent bounce and carry. We haven't seen any evidence of the ball shooting low and turning square and Bangladesh may feel just a little disappointed, losing four. Tamim and Nafees applied themselves well and were willing to grind it out in the middle. Nafees' dismissal went against the run of play and was rather untimely. Tamim looks solid on debut and Bangladesh would want him to stick around for another session. Among the bowlers, Martin and O'Brien were the most impressive. Mills though wasn't at his best.

Bangladesh will be very disappointed with that effort, especially on a true pitch which played better than expected. Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees were the only ones to drop anchor and show some resistance but couldn't sustain it for a long enough period. They needed more than a handful of their batsmen to stick it out but the seamers were too good for them.

Martin was the most impressive with 4 for 64 and so too was Oram. Mills came back well to wrap up the tail, and O'Brien was unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two.

Well, the sun's shining brightly at Dunedin and the New Zealand openers should be out any moment.
