The batsmen will have to watch out for the swing so batting may not be that simple if the Bangladesh seamers get the ball to move around often. New Zealand end the first day 19 ahead with six wickets in hand, perhaps two wickets lesser than what they would have ideally liked. This was a chance for Craig Cumming and Mathew Sinclair to cement their spots in the side with some big scores but it wasn't to be. One player who will be mighty pleased with himself is Matthew Bell, unbeaten on 74 in his comeback Test. He was particularly strong on the off side, and his square cuts were noteworthy. A century here could guarantee him a spot for the next few Tests at least.

Bangladesh fought hard with the ball, but their first-innings effort of 137 didn't do justice to this pitch which has eased out now for the batsmen. Islam was the most impressive of the lot, getting the ball to swing and the batsmen will have to be a little careful. Do join us tomorrow to check on New Zealand's progress. Till then, it's goodbye from all of us here. Cheers!

Right, Oram's on strike. Shahadat Hossain is ready to start.

Hello and welcome back to Cricinfo's coverage of the second day of the first Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh at the University Oval in Dunedin. This is Kanishkaa returning to take you through the day's play.

Unless anything really dramatic happens, New Zealand would be looking to bat out the whole day and extend this lead, which stands at 19 for the moment. Bangladesh did quite well for themselves on the field to pick up those four wickets and a couple of early wickets this morning can restrict New Zealand's lead. I'm not going to make too many estimates or predictions here, so let's just leave it to these guys and see what they can do.

10.45 local time
Pitch and weather: The sunshine in Dunedin is as glorious as yesterday's and the batsmen should enjoy this. The pitch played a lot better than expected yesterday, though it did get slower and lower during the final session. The batsmen have everything to gain today.

Cricinfo will announce its first annual awards, which will celebrate the best individual performances in all three forms of the game in 2007. The winners, selected by a jury, will be announced in the second week of this month. But readers can make their own pick too. Click here to vote.
