Bangladesh tour of New Zealand, 2007/08 / Commentary

Bangladesh in New Zealand Test Series - 2nd Test

New Zealand v Bangladesh

New Zealand won by an innings and 137 runs

Overs 0-50

We're just minutes away from the start. The players are coming out. It's still overcast but the forecast is good so we should get a full day's play. Chris Martin has new ball.

10.50: The teams observe a minute's silence in memory of Sir Edmund Hillary who died yesterday in Auckland, at 88. Hillary, a New Zealander, was the first to climb Mt Everest. He scaled the peak way back in 1953. All players are wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.

Toss (10.30 local time): Daniel Vettori has won his ninth consecutive toss and New Zealand will bowl first. Predictable.

Teams: Bangladesh have made just one change, bringing in allrounder Shakib Al Hasan in place of left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jnr. New Zealand are unchanged from the Dunedin Test so Michael Mason misses out again.

New Zealand: 1 Craig Cumming, 2 Matthew Bell, 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Stephen Fleming, 5 Mathew Sinclair, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Iain O'Brien, 11 Chris Martin

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Habibul Bashar, 4 Mohammad Ashraful (capt), 5 Aftab Ahmed, 6 Shahriar Nafees, 7 Shakib Al Hasan, 8 Mushfiqir Rahim (wk), 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Sajidul Islam

Pitch and weather: The conditions are overcast so the seamers should enjoy this. The pitch is hard and has a live covering of grass so the ball should skid through early on. It's expected to get better for batting from the second day so it could prove to be a good toss to win for Vettori.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second Test between New Zealand and Bangladesh, this time at the Basin Reserve in 'windy' Wellington. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran, your commentator/companion or whatever you may call it, for this game as well. Here's a big hello to my fellow crew members Kiran (scoring) and George Binoy (on bulletin).

10.20 local time: We'll bring you news of the toss and teams shortly.

The tour so far has been hopelessly one-sided, with the visitors being rolled over consistently without a fight. Bangladesh's new opening pair of Junaid Siddique and Tamim Iqbal set a good example for the rest in Dunedin by putting a price on their wickets. The Bangladesh batsmen will have to figure out ways of occupying the crease longer and that is a possibility if the pitch is as slow as predicted.

That's lunch. A very similar script the first session in Dunedin with the Bangladesh top order wobbling again in helpful conditions for the seamers. They were unlucky to lose Ashraful after replays showed the ball clipping the pad through to McCullum but, that was after they had already lost four wickets. A couple of dismissals could have been avoided if the batsmen had shown better judgment outside the off stump.

For New Zealand, Iain O'Brien was the most impressive of the seamers, bowling several wicket-taking deliveries. Do join us at 13.40 local time, (00.40 GMT) for the second session.
