England in New Zealand T20I Series - 1st T20I

New Zealand v England

England won by 32 runs

Welcome back. No rest for the wicked in this form of the game. The teams are straight back out there, and Jesse Ryder is on strike for his first international innings. Andrew Miller here for the moment, while Martin shifts his car

0.1

Sidebottom to Ryder, no run, good length outswinger, pushed tentatively into the covers. Bat on ball straightaway

0.2

Sidebottom to Ryder, no run, tight to off stump and good movement. Ryder defends with a late adjustment

0.3

Sidebottom to Ryder, 1 leg bye, speared into the pads, and a scampered leg-bye as Ryder misses out with an attempted clip

Here's the skipper, Brendon McCullum

0.4

Sidebottom to McCullum, 1 wide, half a pace down the track, and it's enough to prompt a late adjustment from the bowler, and a leg-side wide

0.4

Sidebottom to McCullum, 2 runs, outside off, angling across the right-hander, met with a confident back-foot push through the covers

0.5

Sidebottom to McCullum, no run, short, banged into the thigh-pad, and nearly a run-out as Ryder scampers back after backing up too far

A glorious sunset over Auckland at the moment

0.6

Sidebottom to McCullum, 1 leg bye, massive appeal for lbw, but that must have pitched outside leg stump. Too high as well, probably. Apart from that, stone dead

End of over 1 (5 runs) New Zealand 5/0 (180 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 9.47)
BB McCullum    2* (3b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-3-0
JD Ryder    0* (3b)

Here's Jimmy

1.1

Anderson to McCullum, no run, too short first-up, but Collingwood at point pounces on a sizzling square cut, and that's an undeserved dot ball

1.2

Anderson to McCullum, SIX, smacked high and handsome, clean over the bowler's head. Too full that time, but what a strike!

1.3

Anderson to McCullum, 1 run, pushed into the leg-side

1.4

Anderson to Ryder, FOUR, width and walloped! That's the sort of striking this kid's reputation has been built on. Like a tracer through the covers

1.5

Anderson to Ryder, no run, a swing and a miss

1.6

Anderson to Ryder, 1 run, good finish to the over. Leg-stump yorker, well dug out

End of over 2 (12 runs) New Zealand 17/0 (168 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 8.50, RRR: 9.33)
JD Ryder    5* (6b 1x4)      JM Anderson    1-0-12-0
BB McCullum    9* (6b 1x6)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-3-0

2.1

Sidebottom to Ryder, 1 run, right up in the blockhole, good bowling. Swung out to square leg, but no great timing on that

2.2

Sidebottom to McCullum, OUT, that's the breakthrough, and it's a clever bit of bowling as well. Sidebottom saw him coming, banged it in, and McCullum's attempted pull cannons off the gloves and loops into the hands of short cover. Timely for England

BB McCullum c Shah b Sidebottom 9 (10m 7b 0x4 1x6) SR: 128.57

2.3

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, outside off, left alone

2.4

Sidebottom to Taylor, 1 wide, wild down the leg-side

2.4

Sidebottom to Taylor, OUT, the umpire took an age, but that was plumb! Pitched on middle, nipped back off the seam. Taylor was shuffling across and Gary Baxter was searching for a reason not to give it out. He couldn't find one

LRPL Taylor lbw b Sidebottom 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Here's Jamie How

2.5

Sidebottom to How, no run, tucked up for room by another late-nipping seamer. Hits the pad to a loud appeal, but never close

2.6

Sidebottom to How, no run, fired across the right-hander, How stretches for a cut, but his feet are stuck. That is a mighty fine over

End of over 3 (2 runs) New Zealand 19/2 (166 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 6.33, RRR: 9.76)
JM How    0* (2b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-5-2
JD Ryder    6* (7b 1x4)      JM Anderson    1-0-12-0

3.1

Anderson to Ryder, no run, fired into the pads

3.2

Anderson to Ryder, 1 wide, wild, wide, and woolly. But that's a stunning one-handed take from Mustard. Saved four certain wides

3.2

Anderson to Ryder, 1 run, fuller length, thumps the pads

3.3

Anderson to How, 1 run, better line and length, defended into the covers

3.4

Anderson to Ryder, 1 wide, Anderson's not got control of this white ball just yet. Another wild leg-side wide, and more good work from Mustard

3.4

Anderson to Ryder, no run, swinging down leg again, but this time Ryder's pads get in the way

3.5

Anderson to Ryder, no run, good line and length this time. Full and fast, defended compactly into the covers

3.6

Anderson to Ryder, 1 run, yorker, dug out, a momentary hesitation, but the batsmen are home

So too is Martin. His car has avoided being clamped, so here he is

End of over 4 (5 runs) New Zealand 24/2 (161 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 10.06)
JD Ryder    8* (12b 1x4)      JM Anderson    2-0-17-0

4.2

Sidebottom to Ryder, 1 run, chopped into the ground and out to point

4.3

Sidebottom to How, no run, forward with a firm push into the on side

4.4

Sidebottom to How, no run, pushed from a long way in front of the body but again right to the fielder, point this time

4.5

Sidebottom to How, 1 run, cross-batted swat to mid-on

4.6

Sidebottom to Ryder, 1 run, swished to Shah at midwicket, he dived forward full-length but couldn't quite get there

JD Ryder    14* (15b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-12-2
JM How    2* (6b)      JM Anderson    2-0-17-0

5.1

Broad to Ryder, no run, outside off, angled across Ryder who swings and misses

The crowd are noisy but they need something more in the middle

5.2

Broad to Ryder, 4 leg byes, a big heave across the line, Bowden not interested and the ball scoots away for leg byes. It pitched outside leg otherwise that would have been close

5.3

Broad to Ryder, no run, down leg, it clips the pads and Mustard makes a good tumbling stop

5.4

Broad to Ryder, no run, almost a carbon copy ... down the leg, it brushes the pads and Mustard across quickly to gather on the ground

5.5

Broad to Ryder, FOUR, a big swing - almost a desperate one - gets a top edge and the ball loops down to third man for four. That could have gone anywhere

5.6

Broad to Ryder, FOUR, that got what it deserved, very wide and a thick edge from Ryder goes shooting along the ground to third man

End of over 6 (12 runs) New Zealand 43/2 (142 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 7.16, RRR: 10.14)
JD Ryder    22* (21b 4x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-8-0

The rate remains fractionally above 10 an over. Mascarenhas into the attack.

6.1

Mascarenhas to How, FOUR, swished over midwicket, safe and between the two men in the deep

6.2

Mascarenhas to How, OUT, How tries to hit one over long-on but not nearly enough power and Pietersen, two yards in from the rope, doesn't have to move an inch

JM How c Pietersen b Mascarenhas 6 (17m 8b 1x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

"He's not comfortable trying to hit the ball in the air," says Ian Smith of How.

6.3

Mascarenhas to Styris, 2 leg byes, down the leg side, it flicks the pad and Broad has to slide to prevent the four

6.4

Mascarenhas to Styris, OUT, pushed off the back foot to cover, no run but Ryder backing up slips, and he's not quick enough to regain his feet and although the throw from Bell was not at the stumps, Mascarenhas had enough time to gather and break the stumps and Ryder was not even in the frame

JD Ryder run out 22 (34m 21b 4x4 0x6) SR: 104.76

We waited for the third umpire but Ryder was already back in the hutch and the new batsman in the middle!

6.6

Mascarenhas to Styris, no run, pushed to backward point

End of over 7 (10 runs) New Zealand 53/4 (132 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 7.57, RRR: 10.15)
SB Styris    0* (4b)      AD Mascarenhas    1-0-4-1
PG Fulton    0* (0b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-8-0

Graeme Swann into the attack.

7.1

Swann to Fulton, 1 wide, turns down the leg side, Mustard gathers but the easiest of wides to call

7.1

Swann to Fulton, 5 leg byes, turns past the bat, into the covers, a wild throw from Mascarenhas and Pietersen misses backing up

Must have clipped the inside edge as runs given by Billy Bowden. It looked to have missed the bat by some way.

7.2

SB Styris b Mascarenhas 1 (9m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 12.50

8.5

Mascarenhas to Oram, no run, outside off, Oram fences and misses

8.6

Mascarenhas to Oram, 1 run, a thick edge into the on side gets him off the mark

Now, don't shoot the messenger, but we have had more than a few emails suggesting that were Ryder more athletic and agile, he might not have ended up stranded so far down the track ... the implication being that his lack of speed meant he had to back up further than others might have had to ...

10.6

Mascarenhas to Oram, 1 run, firm drive all along the ground to Pietersen at long-off

11.5

Broad to Mills, no run, good response, on the button and defended

England underway with a fairly comfortable 32-run win, New Zealand never recovering from a sluggish start, although you wonder what might have happened had Jacob Oram come in with more on the board. For England, the difference when they batted was the over when Dimitri Mascarenhas thumped four successive sixes off Jeetan Patel, reigniting the innings and setting them on their way to a formidable score.

We are all back again in two days time, so join us then. In the meantime, from Martin Williamson and Andrew Miller, it's goodnight.
