England tour of New Zealand, 2007/08 / Commentary

10.15am Good morning and welcome to our coverage of the fourth ODI from Napier. A reminder that New Zealand lead the series 2-1 but England come into the game on the back of a convincing win last Friday.

10.50am Daniel Vettori won the toss and put England into bat. Although the McLean Park pitch traditionally suits the team that bats first, Vettori said New Zealand prefer to chase runs. England keep the same 11 who won the third match, while the one change in the New Zealand team sees bowler Iain O'Brien in for allrounder Paul Hitchcock.

10.55am For UK TV viewers we have to hope we don't get a repetition of the mess that was the final two balls of the India v Sri Lanka CB Series game ... when the satellite feed ran out! In Napier it's bright and sunny with a few high white puffy clouds.

The umpires are heading out dressed in fetching red and they are followed by the players. The crowd is good, and to keep you entertained, amused and captivated in the early exchanges, here's Andrew Miller.

Good morning everyone. Alastair Cook is on strike, Kyle Mills the bowler. Here we go

0.1

Mills to Cook, 1 wide, outside off stump, far too far outside off stump. Not the most convincing start

0.1

Mills to Cook, no run, much straighter, and that leaps off a good length, into Cook's startled gloves. Lively

0.2

Mills to Cook, 1 run, dabbed into the off side, and England are already fishing for run outs! Good grief that would have been close. As it is, the shy missed, and England are off the mark

0.3

Mills to Mustard, no run, cutting in from a good line, raps the thigh pad. This wicket has movement

0.4

Mills to Mustard, no run, zipping across the left-hander's bows, and left alone

0.5

Mills to Mustard, no run, a good leave in the end. Outside off, and nibbling off the seam

0.6

Mills to Mustard, 2 runs, driven uncertainly through the leg-side, a bit of an inside-edge on that one. But runs all the same

Napier is the eastern-most international ground in world cricket, apparently. Next stop ... Sabina Park? Here's Chris Martin

End of over 1 (4 runs) England 4/0 (RR: 4.00)
P Mustard    2* (4b)      KD Mills    1-0-4-0
AN Cook    1* (2b)

1.1

Martin to Cook, no run, outside off, nipping off the seam, through to the keeper

1.2

Martin to Cook, 1 run, tucked down to backward point

1.3

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, short, and smeared square - past the out-stretched fingertips off Ryder at square leg - and all the way. Good, solid strike

1.4

Martin to Mustard, no run, fuller and straighter, and driven into the covers

1.5

Martin to Mustard, no run, outswinger, starting wide of off stump and curling past a flashing drive

1.6

Martin to Mustard, no run, zipping off the pitch again, through to the keeper. And that's the second over gone

End of over 2 (5 runs) England 9/0 (RR: 4.50)
P Mustard    6* (8b 1x4)      CS Martin    1-0-5-0
AN Cook    2* (4b)      KD Mills    1-0-4-0

2.1

Mills to Cook, no run, through to the keeper

2.2

Mills to Cook, no run, good carry outside off stump, Taken at chest height by the keeper

2.3

Mills to Cook, no run, outside off, pushed into the covers with a checked defensive drive

2.4

Mills to Cook, no run, loose drive, close to the off stump and sneaking past the inside edge

2.5

Mills to Cook, no run, turned off the toes, picked up at midwicket

2.6

Mills to Cook, no run, lovely delivery, and well left too. That past over the top of the off bail, more encouraging lift from a lively pitch. But New Zealand will want to make England play more frequently

End of over 3 (maiden) England 9/0 (RR: 3.00)
AN Cook    2* (10b)      KD Mills    2-1-4-0
P Mustard    6* (8b 1x4)      CS Martin    1-0-5-0

3.1

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, Mustard played at that one alright, and played well. Riding the bounce to cut firmly through point. Not a lot of width to work with, but timed superbly

3.2

Martin to Mustard, no run, outside off stump, and left alone with a curtain-rail withdrawal of the bat

3.3

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, full and floaty, and too wide from Martin. And Mustard clobbered it through point with a sweet square drive

3.4

Martin to Mustard, 1 run, a good call - a rarety for England in this series - as Mustard tips and runs into the covers

3.5

Martin to Cook, no run, zips off the pitch and defended into the covers with a late adjustment

3.6

Martin to Cook, no run, big stride, and driven square into the hands of point

Composed start for England

End of over 4 (9 runs) England 18/0 (RR: 4.50)
AN Cook    2* (12b)      CS Martin    2-0-14-0
P Mustard    15* (12b 3x4)      KD Mills    2-1-4-0

4.1

Mills to Mustard, no run, that was a violent swish, but nothing but thin air outside off stump

4.2

Mills to Mustard, no run, left alone outside off. Good carry again

4.3

Mills to Mustard, FOUR, on the pads and tucked very delicately behind square

Mustard's looking hot. Badoom-tish ...

4.4

Mills to Mustard, no run, better line this time, and through to the keeper

4.5

Mills to Mustard, no run, good stride once again, and driven firmly - but Vettori in the covers gets down quickly and fields exceptionally

4.6

Mills to Mustard, FOUR, a full half-volley, and that's Mustard's most attractive shot yet - down on one knee and drilled through the covers

End of over 5 (8 runs) England 26/0 (RR: 5.20)
P Mustard    23* (18b 5x4)      KD Mills    3-1-12-0
AN Cook    2* (12b)      CS Martin    2-0-14-0

5.1

Martin to Cook, no run, slower ball, and steered to point with a swish of the wrists

5.2

Martin to Cook, no run, dropped! - and that's an absolute clanger. Outside off, a regulation nick, and McCullum puts it down. It almost seemed as though he was celebrating before it arrived

5.3

Martin to Cook, no run, outside off, and taken cleanly this time. Too late though ...

5.4

Martin to Cook, no run, tighter to the stumps, and angling back in. Defended

5.5

Martin to Cook, no run, a foot outside off and nipping off the seam

Cook is a mite bogged down now ...

5.6

Martin to Cook, 3 runs, short, and pulled. It was a relief to have something to hit, but he didn't quite time it - snatched at it a fraction. No matter, it's three more to the total and a long chase for midwicket

End of over 6 (3 runs) England 29/0 (RR: 4.83)
AN Cook    5* (18b)      CS Martin    3-0-17-0
P Mustard    23* (18b 5x4)      KD Mills    3-1-12-0

6.1

Mills to Cook, no run, driven, into the covers, but can't beat the field

6.2

Mills to Cook, FOUR, flogged through the covers. That was momentarily intercepted by Taylor at short extra, but there was too much power on that shot.

6.3

Mills to Cook, 1 run, nudged into space on the leg side. Good follow-up

6.4

Mills to Mustard, no run, short and angled across the left-hander. A mistimed cut to backward point

6.5

Mills to Mustard, 1 run, straighter, and angling into the left-hander's pads. Clipped square to keep the scoreboard ticking

6.6

Mills to Cook, no run, driven into the covers again

A brisk start for England - well, Mustard - and a slightly dozy start from New Zealand. There is life in this pitch which they aren't exploiting

End of over 7 (6 runs) England 35/0 (RR: 5.00)
AN Cook    10* (22b 1x4)      KD Mills    4-1-18-0
P Mustard    24* (20b 5x4)      CS Martin    3-0-17-0

7.1

Martin to Mustard, no run, short, but too short. Easily ducked

7.2

Martin to Mustard, no run, a wild slash outside off, extra bite off the seam allows the ball to sail through unhindered

7.3

Martin to Mustard, no run, tighter line, more encouraging bounce, through to the keeper

7.4

Martin to Mustard, no run

7.5

Martin to Mustard, no run, slashed drive, picked up in the covers

7.6

Martin to Mustard, no run, attempted yorker, well dug out

End of over 8 (maiden) England 35/0 (RR: 4.37)
P Mustard    24* (26b 5x4)      CS Martin    4-1-17-0
AN Cook    10* (22b 1x4)      KD Mills    4-1-18-0

8.1

Mills to Cook, no run, stands tall to drive, but picked up by the bowler

8.2

Mills to Cook, 1 run, clipped off the pads, into space at midwicket

8.3

Mills to Mustard, 1 run, delicate late cut, well played but fielded at third man

8.4

Mills to Cook, no run, straighter delivery, climbs into the middle of a defensive bat

8.5

Mills to Cook, FOUR, shorter and pulled, not middled but well timed off an under-edge, and fine leg can't cut it off despite a big dive and slide

8.6

Mills to Cook, 1 run, strides into a cover-drive, instant call and easily through for a single

End of over 9 (7 runs) England 42/0 (RR: 4.66)
AN Cook    16* (27b 2x4)      KD Mills    5-1-25-0
P Mustard    25* (27b 5x4)      CS Martin    4-1-17-0

9.1

Martin to Cook, no run, fine delivery, angling in but shaping away, Cook prods uncertainly as it goes by

9.2

Martin to Cook, 1 run, back and across, and dabbed to short midwicket for a quick single

9.3

Martin to Mustard, no run, slower ball, full length and drifting in towards off stump. Pushed to cover

9.4

Martin to Mustard, 1 run, bizarre passage of play. Mustard retreats to leg for a slog, Martin follows him, the ball ends up being smacked straight at the bowler's ankle, and ricochets away for a single. That's gotta hurt, but he's not winced yet ...

9.5

Martin to Cook, no run, slower ball, defended

9.6

Martin to Cook, no run, rippa. Climb, bounce and carry. Just beats the edge and through to the keeper

That's the end of the first Powerplay. The second has been called for instantly, and Oram into the attack

End of over 10 (2 runs) England 44/0 (RR: 4.40)
AN Cook    17* (31b 2x4)      CS Martin    5-1-19-0
P Mustard    26* (29b 5x4)      KD Mills    5-1-25-0

10.1

Oram to Mustard, no run, bouncer, but a slow one. Mustard is unaccustomed to the new pace, and almost swings himself off his feet

10.2

Oram to Mustard, 1 run, straighter, and defended with an uppish prod into the covers

10.3

Oram to Cook, 1 run, steps across and into line for a pull. Nicely timed out to deep midwicket, all along the ground

10.4

Oram to Mustard, FOUR, clubbed straight through the line and no-one's going to cut that off. Another slower delivery, instantly picked, and that's the fifty partnership

10.5

Oram to Mustard, no run, pushed out to point

10.6

Oram to Mustard, 1 run, speared into the pads, defended off the back foot, and a quick call completes the over

End of over 11 (7 runs) England 51/0 (RR: 4.63)
P Mustard    32* (34b 6x4)      JDP Oram    1-0-7-0
AN Cook    18* (32b 2x4)      CS Martin    5-1-19-0

11.1

Martin to Mustard, 1 wide, short, and misdirected. McCullum takes well down the leg-side. Though I bet he's still ruing his one aberration ...

11.1

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, another delivery in a good channel, and in a Test match that might conceivably have been a regulation nick to fourth slip. Instead it races away fine

11.2

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, clobbered up and over the covers. Powerful swing through the line. Effective stuff

11.3

Martin to Mustard, 1 wide, the pressure begins to tell as another one slides down leg ... Mustard's not letting them settle at present

11.3

Martin to Mustard, 2 runs, turned off the hip, and excellent calling - two runs inside the circle. That's a rarety

11.4

Martin to Mustard, no run, slower ball, through to the keeper. Well disguised

11.5

Martin to Mustard, FOUR, superb timing - fine leg was up in the circle, but Mustard turned his wrists and the ball rocketed away

11.6

Martin to Mustard, no run, turned to leg again, but this time straight to fine leg

That's the end of the over, here's Martin for his first burst of the night

End of over 12 (16 runs) England 67/0 (RR: 5.58)
P Mustard    46* (40b 9x4)      CS Martin    6-1-35-0
AN Cook    18* (32b 2x4)      JDP Oram    1-0-7-0

Thanks Andrew. A good start for England and you have to feel that the bowlers have not made the most of the conditions. It's excellent to see a good crowd as well after one or two moderate turnouts so far ... they are predicting a full house later for the only day-only match of the five game series.

12.1

Oram to Cook, no run, straight and full, jabbed back to the bowler

12.2

Oram to Cook, no run, pretty much the same place, pushed across the line to mid-on

12.3

Oram to Cook, FOUR, slower but too wide, he leans back and cuts behind square past backward point, lovely shot and super placement

12.4

Oram to Cook, 3 runs, overpitched and confidently driven off the front foot between cover and extra cover, it's pulled up just short of the rope

12.5

Oram to Mustard, 1 run, pushed to mid-on who has been forced slightly deeper by the flow of runs and that allows the single

12.6

Oram to Cook, no run, back and pushed into the covers ... a rare dot ball

A big day today with the IPL auctions. Who would you pay the most for ... now or in the past?

End of over 13 (8 runs) England 75/0 (RR: 5.76)
AN Cook    25* (37b 3x4)      JDP Oram    2-0-15-0
P Mustard    47* (41b 9x4)      CS Martin    6-1-35-0

Here is Iain O'Brien round the wicket to the left hander ...lots of white zinc on his nose

13.1

O'Brien to Mustard, no run, pushed with the angle into the leg side

13.2

O'Brien to Mustard, no run, steered to backward point off the back foot, slightly jumpily so

13.3

O'Brien to Mustard, 1 run, worked to third man, angled and a call of two, but only ever the one. Kidology, no more ...

13.4

O'Brien to Cook, FOUR, too short, he leans back and cuts square and third man's despairing dive as he hurtles to his left just misses by a finger's length

13.5

O'Brien to Cook, no run, good response, back and beaten with no real foot movement

13.6

O'Brien to Cook, 1 run, turned slightly edgily square on the leg side

End of over 14 (6 runs) England 81/0 (RR: 5.78)
AN Cook    30* (40b 4x4)      IE O'Brien    1-0-6-0
P Mustard    48* (44b 9x4)      JDP Oram    2-0-15-0

14.1

Oram to Cook, FOUR, swished sweetly off his legs, one of those effortless strokes that has you purring, timed and square leg only had to retrieve it not to chase it

Right, let's get one thing straight ... there will be no cheap Mustard and Cook puns. They have been done to death, recycled and then murdered again. Enough!

14.2

Oram to Cook, no run, jabbed from some way away from him, little foot movement again, into the off side

14.3

Oram to Cook, no run, prodded into the leg side

14.4

Oram to Cook, no run, rather jerkily pushed to leg

14.5

Oram to Cook, no run, he walks to the off and the bowler follows him and keeps him cramped and he has to push the ball defensively back

14.6

Oram to Cook, no run, driven to wide mid-on

End of over 15 (4 runs) England 85/0 (RR: 5.66)
AN Cook    34* (46b 5x4)      JDP Oram    3-0-19-0
P Mustard    48* (44b 9x4)      IE O'Brien    1-0-6-0

15.1

O'Brien to Mustard, no run, down the leg, flicks the pad and McCullum dives and makes a half-hearted appeal

15.2

O'Brien to Mustard, FOUR, he shapes to cut, it is too close to him and he improvises and chips it over where slips would have been had there been any

15.3

O'Brien to Mustard, 1 run, dropped a few feet to leg and a scurried single ... good running and that's the kind of single that sinks morale of fielders

15.4

O'Brien to Cook, FOUR, short and larruped through midwicket for a one bounce four ... onto it in a shot and his form is flooding back

15.5

O'Brien to Cook, no run, caught back in his crease, he jabs down late and keeps out a straight one

15.6

O'Brien to Cook, 1 run, driven to mid-on, the fielder's back on the circle and another easy single

End of over 16 (10 runs) England 95/0 (RR: 5.93)
AN Cook    39* (49b 6x4)      IE O'Brien    2-0-16-0

Daniel Vettori brings himself into the attack and he eschews the third Powerplay as well. Four men inside the circle ...

16.1

Vettori to Cook, 1 run, half driven across the line to mid-on

16.2

Vettori to Mustard, no run, outside off, straightens and beats a half poke, McCullum takes and whips off the bails

16.3

Vettori to Mustard, 1 run, swept from outside off to the man at deep midwicket ...there for that very shot

16.4

Vettori to Cook, 1 run, drops too short, cut hard to the sweeper

16.5

Vettori to Mustard, 1 leg bye, a horrible reverse sweep, he misses and Vettori roars an appeal for leg before ... Billy Bowden not interested ... Vettori mutters and scowls and they run a leg bye

16.6

Vettori to Cook, 1 run, flicked into the leg side

End of over 17 (5 runs) England 100/0 (RR: 5.88)
AN Cook    42* (52b 6x4)      DL Vettori    1-0-4-0
P Mustard    54* (50b 10x4)      IE O'Brien    2-0-16-0

And we have the first drinks interval, and on a warm day it's a most welcome one. The clouds have dissipated and it's blue sky all round.

17.1

O'Brien to Cook, 1 run, inside edge into a pad, a loud appeal, Cook sets off, retreats, backward point underarms into the stumps, the ball cannons off and allows the overthrow ...

17.2

O'Brien to Mustard, 3 runs, swished off his pads, long leg and deep midwicket converge and slide to stop it and they run three. Replays as the third umpire looks at Jesse Ryder's dive ... did he hit the rope before he flicked back? No definitive replays possible so no boundary

17.3

O'Brien to Cook, 1 run, pulled hard on the bounce to deep midwicket where there is no issue about Ryder's stop

17.4

19.1

O'Brien to Cook, 1 run, back, waits and flicks to the busy Ryder at deep midwicket

19.2

O'Brien to Mustard, 1 wide, wide and short, much too much so, Mustard pulls out of the shot and it's signalled as a wide

19.2

O'Brien to Mustard, no run, a much better bouncer, he squats under it and that's perfectly legal

19.3

O'Brien to Mustard, SIX, steps back and forehand smashes the ball high over extra cover, it clears the rope by a yard and as there was no one out there, a safe option

19.4

O'Brien to Mustard, 1 run, steered down to third man

19.5

O'Brien to Cook, FOUR, as textbook as Mustard's slash was improvisational ... stands tall and thumps that through extra cover, the man in the deep slides but can't get near it

23.5

Styris to Cook, no run, driven uppishly a yard short of extra cover

23.6

LJ Wright    20* (9b 2x4 1x6)      CS Martin    9-2-66-0

Here comes the final over of the 50 ... can Chris Martin redeem himself?

49.1

Martin to Collingwood, no run, yorker outside off, he shapes to swing over midwicket, it clips his boot and McCullum fields well

49.2

Martin to Collingwood, 1 leg bye, Collingwood's intentions are clear as he again takes a big and early step to the off, Martin counters with a yorker aimed at him rather than the stumps, it hits him on the pads and dribbles to point

49.3

Martin to Wright, 4 byes, oh dear ... Wright looks to paddle the ball over the keeper, misses, it bounces in front of McCullum who, tiredly, lets it through his legs

49.4

Martin to Wright, 2 runs, low fulls toss hit off the bottom of the bat, long-on fields but he should have not allowed them to come back for such an easy second

49.5

Martin to Wright, 2 runs, a step and driven hard to long-off while on one knee, again Collingwood hurtles back to the danger end to get a second

49.6

Martin to Wright, OUT, low full toss hit high towards long-on, Fulton sprints in, makes a lot of ground, dives, and holds the ball a foot above the turf. An excellent catch for the big man gets the crowd excited but it's all rather late ...

LJ Wright c Fulton b Martin 24 (19m 13b 2x4 1x6) SR: 184.61

2.30pm New Zealand came unstuck after sticking England in. Five of the top six made fifties and New Zealand wilted both with the ball and in the field. Vettori's decision seemed a negative one, almost as if he had no faith in his batsmen to set a total. On a lovely batting track a target of 341 is not out of sight but New Zealand will have to bat out of their skins. Join us in 40 minutes ...
