England in New Zealand Test Series - 1st Test

New Zealand v England

New Zealand won by 189 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

TV has just shown a replay of the appeal in Sidebottom's previous over against Vettori ... and it was hitting halfway up middle and leg!

100.1

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, Taylor back, beaten, and the ball plops off his pads into the off side

100.2

Sidebottom to Taylor, 1 run, turned into the leg side

100.3

Sidebottom to Vettori, no run, upright defensive push into the covers

100.4

Sidebottom to Vettori, FOUR, that's where he likes it, wide and slightly short, dabbed more than cut behind square on the off side

100.5

Sidebottom to Vettori, no run, he tries another cut but that's much too close and the ball beats him ... he turns away in self-admonishment before the ball has even reached the keeper

100.6

Sidebottom to Vettori, 1 run, pushed off the front foot to deep cover

More pedantry from an in-house source. "It is not Hawkeye as we know it NZC have their own version of Hawkeye," says Robin. So what is it called?

End of over 101 (6 runs) New Zealand 337/6
DL Vettori    28* (45b 5x4)      RJ Sidebottom    27-8-66-2
LRPL Taylor    83* (152b 12x4)      MJ Hoggard    26-2-122-1

lukewarm applause as Steve Harmison comes on.

101.4

Harmison to Taylor, no run, outside off but no shot needed

101.5

Harmison to Taylor, FOUR, wide, overpicthed and Taylor slams that off the front foot square through the covers, deep cover has no chance even though he only had a few yards to move

101.6

Harmison to Taylor, no run, wide, Taylor has a slash and a miss

Well, what can you say about Harmison that hasn't already been said. Check what Andrew had to say yesterday ...

End of over 102 (7 runs) New Zealand 344/6
LRPL Taylor    87* (155b 13x4)      SJ Harmison    16-2-70-1
DL Vettori    30* (48b 5x4)      RJ Sidebottom    27-8-66-2

A double change ... Paul Collinwood on. Mid 70s from both ends ...

102.1

Collingwood to Vettori, no run, outside off, no shot, Ambrose takes around his ankles

I do wish Ambrose would stand up to this stuff.

103.3

103.5

Harmison to Taylor, no run, outside off, no shot

103.6

Harmison to Taylor, no run, and again, wide and left.

In the book it's a maiden. Which just goes to show that statistics can lie. That's drinks as well. Nate (from NZ) says: "Hawkeye is Kiwieye in NZ, not as accurate and has hardly got off the ground."

End of over 104 (maiden) New Zealand 348/6
LRPL Taylor    87* (161b 13x4)      SJ Harmison    17-3-70-1

118.6

Panesar to Vettori, no run, Vettori well forward, and Daryl Harper calls "that's over and lunch"

1.10pm So then, the sides set to resume for the second session. Hasn't Taylor played well so far, his straight play a treat to see.

12.55pm For all of you not up to speed, spotted dick is not a codeword, it's a superb dessert. It needs heaps of custard as well. Proving you learn something every day, it's also known as figgy dowdy, dotted lloyd, packphour's lament and dicky widmark. Cricket scores and general knowledge ... And I am delighted to announce that Jenny Thompson will take the first hour after lunch while I lie down with some antacids after my carbohydrate overdose ...

Lunch well, what a one-sided session, dominated by Ross Taylor, who brought up his maiden hundred, and Daniel Vettori. England looked blow par but that's not to take anything away from the batsmen. We will be back in 40 minutes at 1.10pm (0010GMT) after a spot of potato curry and spotted dick washed down with a fine claret.

End of over 119 (maiden) New Zealand 387/6

Sidebottom, whose sunblock is nothing short of Phantom of the Opera, can't believe that

119.4

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, a good length again, forces the defence on the front foot

Vettori meanwhile plays the back-foot cut shot, in air guitar mode, at the other end

119.5

119.6

Sidebottom to Taylor, 1 run, outside off, driven out to the sweeper on the off-side and he steals the strike

It may not have been Australia's week, but at least one Australian is happy, by the way. Robert Ogilvie, the streaker who was clotheslined by Andrew Symonds, copped a $1500 fine but doesn't regret it. "It was great actually," he's alleged to have said and the video may or may not be on Youtube...

End of over 120 (1 run) New Zealand 388/6
LRPL Taylor    112* (214b 17x4)      RJ Sidebottom    31-8-76-2

120.6

End of over 121 (4 runs) New Zealand 392/6
LRPL Taylor    116* (220b 18x4)      MS Panesar    34-10-79-1

121.4

121.6

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, planted on a good length, forcing the batsman to defend again, which he does tidily enough

Craig emails in on the subject of Sidebottom's sun screen. "The NZ climate is nasty for sun... it can seem clouded over but you still get sunburnt... I've been sunburnt playing cricket when it was drizzling and I had my long sleeve jersey on." Ouch, like Australia then. Still doesn't explain why he's left the lower half of his face uncovered... unless it's mixed in to his stubble

End of over 122 (1 run) New Zealand 393/6
LRPL Taylor    116* (225b 18x4)      RJ Sidebottom    32-8-77-2
DL Vettori    48* (98b 6x4)      MS Panesar    34-10-79-1

122.2

Panesar to Vettori, FOUR, "Catch it" says Ambrose more out of hope than expectation, and Vettori steps down and forces it over midwicket on the front foot

122.3

Panesar to Vettori, 2 runs, Panesar's aggression goes a bit wrong as he picks up the ball and tries to throw the ball back at the keeper, it spills out, and goes to cover point where Sidebottom has to go and pick it up

One for the bloopers reel

Panesar to Vettori, 1 run, a push of a drive out to mid-on brings up the 400

A good fifty from Vettori came up that over, how often he's the go-to man when New Zealand need some runs... although of course Taylor has contributed plenty already

End of over 123 (7 runs) New Zealand 400/6
LRPL Taylor    116* (227b 18x4)      MS Panesar    35-10-86-1

123.2

Sidebottom to Vettori, no run, swing in to the left hander, who defends in line with off and follows up with a "Wait!"

123.3

Sidebottom to Vettori, FOUR, some width outside off, and a push through cover with some good placement, too

123.4

Sidebottom to Vettori, 1 run, banged in short on middle and pulled out to deep midwicket, played safely out there

123.5

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, round the wicket now and squares the batsman up on off, he manages to recover and steer the edge down towards the gully

123.6

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, hostile from Sidebottom to round off the over, a sharp bouncer that hardly gets up above shoulder height, the batsman leans back and lets it go

End of over 124 (7 runs) New Zealand 407/6

124.2

124.3

Panesar to Vettori, no run, on middle and leg, turned off the pads squareish

124.4

Panesar to Vettori, FOUR, width outside off and Vettori makes no mistake, stepping back and using the pace with a dab through third man. Very deft indeed

124.5

Panesar to Vettori, no run, stands and waits for the ball to come in on middle and leg, it pops a touch and he fends it into the leg-side

124.6

Panesar to Vettori, 1 run, driven out calmly to mid-on this time and they take the comfortable single

Dave Holland's comment on Sidebottom is fine-able: "Might be a case of stubble burning then?" This ends now.

125.1

Sidebottom to Vettori, 1 run, good defence on the front foot now, with a push out and they scramble through

125.2

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, round the wicket and boulders that one in on off, it's defended on the front foot

125.3

Sidebottom to Taylor, 1 run, sllightly slower ball outside off, the batsman's on to it like a rocket with a firm drive through the covers

125.4

Sidebottom to Vettori, no run, back over the wicket, fires in the bouncer over middle and off, Vettori ducks under

125.5

Sidebottom to Vettori, (no ball) 1 run, on the legs, turned out in front of square. An overstep of a no-ball, but no free hit in this game

125.5

Sidebottom to Taylor, no run, round the wicket now, the batsman pushes into the covers on the front foot, defensively

125.6

Sidebottom to Taylor, 1 run, not too short on off, but Taylor's on to that so quickly with a firm ball out to midwicket

"The Ian Botham Memorial Jenga Tower is swaying gently in the breeze," notes Andrew Miller. "Very soporific."

End of over 126 (5 runs) New Zealand 423/6

Taylor's total takes him to the top of the list for highest scores on debut against England for New Zealand. Change of bowling now, Pietersen into the attack

126.1

Pietersen to Taylor, 2 runs, gives this one some air but also some width down leg, it's tucked down to fine leg ever so gently and Sidebottom is able to gallop round and throw back in

126.2

Pietersen to Taylor, OUT, the change has worked! Taylor goes to swipe across the line and a top edge loops up and is in the air for a while before Pietersen walks over to take a straightforward catch

LRPL Taylor c & b Pietersen 120 (322m 235b 18x4 0x6) SR: 51.06

A sad end to an excellent innings from Taylor and what's only Pietersen's third wicket in Tests.

126.3

Pietersen to Mills, no run, extra loop on that one from Pietersen, the batsman forward on the front foot and drives back forward

126.4

Pietersen to Mills, no run, right up there on off, defended on the front foot and a Dhoni-esque "Oi" comes from the keeper's lips

126.5

Pietersen to Mills, no run, pushes down leg on a good length

126.6

Pietersen to Mills, no run, big loop again, the ball coming down towards leg and Pietersen's appeal is in vain

A very handy start for Pietersen indeed

End of over 127 (2 runs) New Zealand 425/7
KD Mills    0* (4b)      KP Pietersen    1-0-2-1
DL Vettori    75* (115b 9x4 1x6)      RJ Sidebottom    34-8-89-2

A double change, Collingwood coming on now with his medium pacers

127.1

Collingwood to Vettori, 1 run, stays over the wicket for the left hander, starts with a loosener outside off, the batsman driving out to the covers

127.2

Collingwood to Mills, no run, up there on off, defended forward, little room to do much else there

By the way, that stand was a record seventh-wicket partnership for New Zealand v England. Well batted

127.3

Collingwood to Mills, no run, defended on the front foot this time, only just to say got the bat in there first

127.4

Collingwood to Mills, no run, defended tightly on the front foot again, Collingwood plugging the line in line with off

If that makes sense

127.5

Collingwood to Mills, no run, on the money again, and there's a forward defence this time

127.6

Collingwood to Mills, no run, more of the same prompts more of the same, or ditto for short

End of over 128 (1 run) New Zealand 426/7

128.1

Pietersen to Vettori, no run, looped down off, left alone this time

128.2

Pietersen to Vettori, no run, many war cries of throat-curdling appeals as the ball strikes Vettori below the knee roll in line with off, a good stride in from the batsman, though

It was also probably missing leg

128.3

Pietersen to Vettori, FOUR, steps out and manages the sweep

128.4

Pietersen to Vettori, FOUR, full toss and Vettori gives it the treatment, also running into a firm drive off the legs in front of midwicket. Great shot

He's rocketing along

128.5

Pietersen to Vettori, no run, defended on the front foot this time

128.6

Pietersen to Vettori, 1 run, turned off the legs to midwicket, and there's some urgent shouting of "Come on, come on"

Pietersen followed up his lbw shout with "You're allowed to give lbws," just about getting away with it with a cheeky delivery and smile. He's bowling with his wedding ring on, a touch dangerous if he gets rapped on it

129.2

Collingwood to Mills, no run, full ball dug out off a line with middle and off out to mid-off and in comes the sensible "Waiting!"

129.3

Collingwood to Mills, 1 leg bye, fired on to the legs, Mill plays around the front foot down to fine leg

129.4

Collingwood to Vettori, 1 run, looks to drive out to mid-off but the ball skews off to deep point where it's "Well done, Hoggy"

129.5

Collingwood to Mills, no run, a good ball now on middle, good length, and defended on the front foot edgily

129.6

Collingwood to Mills, no run, on middle and leg this time, a big appeal but the umpire's not interested, turning it down immediately

130.4

Pietersen to Vettori, no run, good control on off, pushed down on the front foot defensively

130.5

Pietersen to Vettori, no run, fires it up there outside off, the ball continues on straight and Vettori tries to push it off the back foot into the off side

Collingwood to Mills, no run, a short and wide one outside off, Mills went fishing with a back-foot cut and just to say failed to edge it

131.2

Collingwood to Mills, 2 runs, a hint of curve away, the batsman opens the face and guides it down to third man, a good steer

Mills off the mark, then

131.3

Collingwood to Mills, no run, right up there on middle and off, defended on the front foot

131.4

Collingwood to Mills, no run, fuller this time, on off, the batsman leans back and looks to push over to mid-on, in the air

Hang onto your hats, slippers: here's Steve Harmison

Thanks Jen. Will here. What an ugly scorecard that is from an England perspective; Vettori is playing a characteristically dogged hand as usual.

134.1

Harmison to Vettori, 1 bye, wide of the off stump and 74mph, it dies on Ambrose and the ball ricochets off his gloves

134.2

Harmison to Mills, no run, down the leg side this time, but vaguely on target and Harmison roars the most unlikely of appeals. Sliding down leg

134.3

Harmison to Mills, no run, he's gradually getting quicker - that one was 80mph and at least straight. Blocked out solidly

134.4

Harmison to Mills, no run, a touch of drift into the right hander who clumps it square of the wicket on the front foot. Point dives well to save the single

134.5

Harmison to Mills, FOUR, rotten long-hop pulled over midwicket with ease. Poor ball

134.6

Harmison to Mills, no run, full and floaty, it's driven hard to mid-off

An uninspiring over to say the least

End of over 135 (5 runs) New Zealand 451/7
KD Mills    11* (34b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    22-3-89-1
DL Vettori    88* (133b 11x4 1x6)      PD Collingwood    13-2-32-1

135.1

Collingwood to Vettori, OUT, goddim! Excellent ball from Collingwood, angling across the left hander who tried to dab it past Strauss, at a wide lone slip, who dived to his right to hold a relatively simple chance

DL Vettori c Strauss b Collingwood 88 (198m 134b 11x4 1x6) SR: 65.67

135.2

Collingwood to Patel, no run, solidly blocked out on the front foot

135.3

Collingwood to Patel, no run, neat little swinger from Collingwood, on a perfect line and length and Patel comes cautiously forward to block it out

135.4

Collingwood to Patel, FOUR, very nicely played indeed, flicking this inswinger past mid-on for four. Excellent timing

135.5

Collingwood to Patel, no run, stands tall and creams this off the back foot, but straight to cover

135.6

Collingwood to Patel, no run, a slow bouncer which he ducks under with ease

End of over 136 (4 runs) New Zealand 455/8

KD Mills    11* (34b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    22-3-89-1

Here comes Harmison

136.1

Harmison to Mills, no run, a touch too short and a little wide of the off stump, wide enough to be left alone. Ambrose takes it by his knees

136.2

Harmison to Mills, FOUR, a poor delivery. Short, wide and it sat up at a comfortable height for him to cut it powerfully behind square

136.3

Harmison to Mills, no run, good comeback. Fuller and in the channel outside off, it's left alone

136.4

Harmison to Mills, FOUR, bosh. He's just flayed this dismissively, treating the bowling with absolutely no respect. Again short and wide, he threw his hands at it and it flew square of the wicket for four more

Oh dear

136.5

Harmison to Mills, no run, ooh he shapes to play before hiding his bat

136.6

Harmison to Mills, no run, a good one with which to finish the over, in the channel and a touch quicker. He fishes and misses

End of over 137 (8 runs) New Zealand 463/8
KD Mills    19* (40b 4x4)      SJ Harmison    23-3-97-1
JS Patel    4* (5b 1x4)      PD Collingwood    14-2-36-2

137.1

Collingwood to Patel, no run, a slow dibbly dobbler on the off stump which he pumps back to the bowler

Martin has utterly lost the plot and is imploring Ambrose to stand up to the stumps. You have to agree with him - well, you don't, but I do. The man has a point, though...

137.2

Collingwood to Patel, 1 run, a shorter one which Patel plays very well, fending it off his chest

137.3

Collingwood to Mills, no run, swinging into his legs, Mills nudges to the leg side but without intent or power

137.4

Collingwood to Mills, FOUR, oh that's a waste of a delivery. A bouncer which doesn't get up and Mills hooks it around the corner for four. Thoughtless bowling

137.5

Collingwood to Mills, 1 run, down the leg side and nudged for a single

137.6

Collingwood to Patel, no run, good line and length, Patel comes forward to defend

End of over 138 (6 runs) New Zealand 469/8
JS Patel    5* (8b 1x4)      PD Collingwood    15-2-42-2
KD Mills    24* (43b 5x4)      SJ Harmison    23-3-97-1

The brief Harmison experiment has come to its predictable conclusion. Here's Sidebottom to replace him

138.1

Sidebottom to Mills, 1 run, on middle-and-leg and it hurries him into a defensive jab

138.2

Sidebottom to Patel, OUT, well bowled and a safe catch from Strauss at first slip. Angling across Patel who drove at it without moving his feet, Strauss taking the edge low to his left

JS Patel c Strauss b Sidebottom 5 (15m 9b 1x4 0x6) SR: 55.55

"Not many people know this," begins Michael, "but I went to school with Kylie Mills and he actually started off his career as an opening batsman!!" I should be so lucky, lucky lucky lucky.

138.3

Sidebottom to Martin, OUT, got him, cleaned him up! Full, straight and Martin completely missed it - his off stump cartwheeling backwards to end New Zealand's innings

CS Martin b Sidebottom 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

And that'll be tea, and that's a fine effort from New Zealand, in spite of losing 3 for 19 at the end. Daniel Vettori was characteristically dogged, frustrating England with another half-century while Ross Taylor showed an impressive range of shots in his maiden hundred. Ryan Sidebottom lacked the control he showed yesterday but was again the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 90, well supported by Paul Collingwood. Matthew Hoggard has had two days to forget (1 for 122 from 26), as has Steve Harmison (1 for 97) whose pace and control were both disconcertingly average. Join us in about 15 minutes for England's reply.
