The Indian board's plan for six of its cricketers to turn out in New Zealand's domestic competition ahead of the Tests is in doubt with the New Zealand players' body saying it will not pull ICL players out of state squads to facilitate the games. On Friday, the board had withdrawn Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik at the last minute from a charity match involving ICL player Hamish Marshall.
"There's no way we'd stand for that," New Zealand Cricket Players' Association chief Heath Mills was quoted as saying in the New Zealand Herald. "They're New Zealanders and they're perfectly entitled to play in a domestic league in their own country. We will not accept players being stood down because of the petty politics of another country."
Also, if the BCCI maintains its tough stance on the ICL it cannot allow its players to join teams that field players from the banned league - this includes Canterbury (Shane Bond and Chris Harris) and Auckland (Daryl Tuffey). Tuffey is the only one to have played the four-day State Championship so far this season.
Mills said he was asked by Justin Vaughan, the New Zealand Cricket chief executive, if he would agree to withdraw Marshall from the charity game so that the BCCI would let Tendulkar and Karthik play. "It's a fair enough question but I said 'absolutely not'. I fully understand the benefits of having Sachin play but Hamish is one of our members and that [withdrawing him] is just not on. But there was no pressure. Justin was entirely reasonable."
Accommodating the Indians in the other three teams will also be difficult since the rules allow only one overseas player per side. Even then, the Indians will be facing teams that include ICL players. Geoff Allott, the NZC manager, who will coordinate the allocation, said ICL was just one of the factors being considered. "[There is also] scheduling and the apportioning of players."

in response to BCCITLM, my club needs a new roller, tractor and the clubhouse needs refurbishing. When can we expect to receive our cheque from the BCCI? The season starts soon and we'd love to be sorted by then!!!
Posted by Nerk on (March 02 2009, 23:03 PM GMT)I don't understand those people who so fanatically support the BCCI! I mean, since when is cricket played for the boards and not the fans? I thought cricket was supposed to be about the fans, because ultimately it is the paying public who pay their salaries and stuff. And in my view the more cricket the better. And everyone, lets stop targetting just India, because all the boards are exactly the same. Cricket Australia, ECB et al. They all play politics when everyone just wants to play the greatest sport of all.
Posted by sheenu on (March 02 2009, 09:22 AM GMT)While we all agree that BCCI should hang its head in shame, what I don't understand is what is ICC doing about this. It appears to me that ICC is nothing but a puppet at the hands of BCCI. If ICC is truly and genuinely interested in promoting the game and have the best players play, then they have no ther alternative but to recognize ICL and let ICL players play for their domestic teams and their national team. From all the happenings, it is very clear that ICC is a just puppet governing body, where the puppeteer is BCCI. What else can we expect from a board such as BCCI which has only politicians (politics is the last resort for a 'sc.....el', as Mr Johnson put it)as its office bearers. Shame on both BCCI and ICC !!
Posted by BCCITLM on (March 02 2009, 07:29 AM GMT)I think it is very RICH for those of you to dish the BCCI for their decision, but did you thnk for one second that they are a business protecting their interest??? I do not see anyone complaining about the $25 million US dollars that New Zealand recieved just in TV rights???!!!!! India has and so too does the BCCI to inforce their rights and to protect their interests as they choose to, they provide 80%+ of the money generated in world cricket, that same money spills into club cricket in ALL countries!!!. So those of you upset with the BCCI, tell Justin Vaughn that you would prefer India not visit here anymore, ...... or keep your tunnel vision views, and maybe the BCCI may not send the MOST exciting cricket team in the world to N.Z. anymore. When you d not hold the power, I suggest you bite the pride, and play "host" as N.Z. cricket, it's fans and supporters will be the losers, respect those who should be respected, and the BCCI should be.
Posted by NikhilDXB on (March 02 2009, 07:28 AM GMT)Well at least the kids who storm off with the bat and ball actually own it...thats not the case here, its the collective will of fans and players at all levels that creates this phenomenon the BCCI and others exploit like a cutthroat business...I'm appalled at this latest turn of events, the brazen-ness of asking another country (which is already showing more generosity than needed by letting our players play in their matches, and get acclimatised to difficult conditions which would work against their national team) to alter selection policies at the domestic level, shows Indian cricket in a very poor light.
Posted by pogginz on (March 02 2009, 06:22 AM GMT)New Zealand is a net drain on the money from ICC. That is why we cannot just field Shane Bond and let other teams withdraw from playing us. This "spat" between the two Indian T20 leagues is poorly understood by the cricketing public here. The main thing we get out of it is that the money involved would make a mob-boss's eyes water and there is little that we can do to influence the outcome. It is of course preposterous for us to drop players from our domestic competition to fuel the vanity of a cricket board that has robbed us of our best fast bowler. However we have beaten the T20 world champion team without him, and, I have every hope that we will beat the No.3 ranked Indian side in ODI's. Action's speak louder than words or money.
Posted by preethundal on (March 02 2009, 05:54 AM GMT)what all the other cricket boards need to do is to unite together against BCCI and let their players, who have played ICL play in their international teams and if BCCI want to cancel tours let them cancel and pay the fine. and this will put BCCI in the right path. hats off to New Zealand for doing this.
Posted by arbee on (March 02 2009, 04:44 AM GMT)Petty politics of BCCI indeed. The Indian board should hang its head in shame for playing spoil sport and India's legal machinery has not stood up to the cause of the rights of the players. It is also intruiguing why the players have not stood together. No player should be ready to play for BCCI.
Posted by sheenu on (March 02 2009, 03:46 AM GMT)Kudos to Mr. Mills for taking this stand and standing up to the bullying attitude of BCCI. It is high time someone took BCCI to court for denying many Indian citizens a chance to represent their country, just because they play for ICL. I am an Indian, and I am disgusted by BCCI's attitude. They think they are bigger than the game itself. There are many exceptionally talented Indian cricketers in ICL some of whom are better than some of the players in the Indian team. They should be given a chance to represent their country. Someone, please wake up and take BCCI to court.
Posted by TACS on (March 02 2009, 03:22 AM GMT)BCCI just copied what ICL did. BCCI was not innovative enough to come up with such tournament plan. What BCCI doing is idiotic, childish and worth nothing and get lot of bad names to them. They are not only hanging their heads down with shame (they dont know that they do) but also all indians. Being an Indian, I don't support BCCI's ultra idiot decision of not letting their players to play with the team which accommodates ICL players. BCCI shame on you!!!
