Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, has criticised the team's showing and called for an improved performance in the second Test in Napier. "We were outplayed in every facet of the game," he said after India clinched their first Test victory in New Zealand in 33 years. "In every aspect India just showed us how to do it in this Test match."

Vettori was particularly unhappy with the batting after New Zealand were bowled out for 279 in both innings despite having a deep batting line-up. "We have to bat longer. Eighty overs in both innings is just not acceptable. We need to bat at least 120 overs."

In their second innings, New Zealand lost six top and middle-order wickets for 93 to undermine their hopes of saving the match after conceding a 241-run lead. Vettori said his batsmen needed to learn from the manner in which India compiled their runs. "We just had two 50-run partnerships in the whole innings," he said. "Compare it to the way India batted. There were at least five or six partnerships in the first innings."

The bedrock of India's batting effort was the Man-of-the-Match Sachin Tendulkar's 160. He was reprieved by Daniel Flynn at midwicket when on 13. "Even our fielding, which is something we normally pride ourselves on, was disappointing," Vettori said. "Dropped catches always hurt and our ground fielding was poor as well."

Vettori also wanted his bowlers to be more consistently accurate. "At times we built pressure for up to six to ten balls and then we let it slip and bowled the boundary balls. We need to put 30-35 balls in the right areas in a row to create pressure and give ourselves the opportunity to win."
