India in New Zealand ODI Series - 1st ODI

New Zealand v India

India won by 53 runs (D/L method)

1.55pm local So then, given the nature of this pitch, New Zealand will need to be at their best when they take up the new ball. Sehwag averaged 42.71 the last time he played an ODI series here. He and Gambhir have formed a solid pair for India, though it will be Tendulkar opening with Sehwag. New Zealand welcome back Kyle Mills, who has plenty of experience.

Just a couple minutes till we get underway. Looks to be a decent crowd in. Out come the Indian openers. Sehwag twirls his arms. On these small grounds, you have license to hit. Mills will take up the attack.

1.35pm local Priety Zinta is down in the middle for the toss! Some luck she's brought for Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who wins the toss and decides India will have a bat. Napier is known to be a good batting track, even though India haven't done too well here over the years. Ishant Sharma, as we all know, is injured and he is replaced by Praveen Kumar. Irfan Pathan has also been dropped and in his place steps Munaf Patel.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee misses out.

Rain is forecast here, which is not good news. Its a tad cloudy and windy. The track looks a good one, no surprises that Dhoni wanted to bat. Hard, flat. There have been scores over 300 recently. Expect runs.

Here are the teams:

India: 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt/wk), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel.

New Zealand: 1 Jesse Ryder, 2 Brendon McCullum (wk), 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jacob Oram, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Grant Elliott, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Ian Butler, 11 Iain O'Brien.

1.20pm local Its game one of a five-match series and we're bringing you all the action live on Cricinfo. Welcome to all of you, in which ever time zone you may be. Early risers in India, a very good morning to you. Get some coffee!

Big series, this. New Zealand are coming off an 2-2 ODI series draw with Australia and a Twenty20 series win over India. India have been a fighting ODI unit of late, and it remains to be seen if the losses in Christchurch and Wellington rankle.

Calling this game will be myself, Jamie Alter, and scoring responsibilities lie with the trusted Binoy George.

Plenty of eyes on Brendon McCullum, who led both successful run chases from the front in the Twenty20s. Now the explosive wicket-keeper batsman will be expected to reproduce his form in the ODIs. He's in my Fantasy League team. Have you made your teams?

Similarly, on the Indian side, Virender Sehwag is a big threat to the home side. The early removal of Sehwag will be a priority for Daniel Vettori's team. Sehwag hit the first three balls of his tour for six in Christchurch!

We're moments away from the toss. I'll have the teams for you as soon as possible.

0.1

Mills to Sehwag, no run, pitches on just the right area first ball, less than a foot outside off stump, wobbles the ball away off the seam, and Sehwag shoulders arms

Only one slip in place ...

0.2

Mills to Sehwag, no run, shorter in length, slanting into Sehwag, who taps it to square leg

0.3

Mills to Sehwag, 1 no ball, back of a length, not much movement, played to cover ... but Mills has overstepped so we have an early free hit

0.3

Mills to Sehwag, no run, oh well bowled, Mills! Thats a lovely yorker, just outside off stump, Sehwag opens the face and tries to jam it down toward third man but cannot make contact

0.4

Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, first runs off the bat, a fluent cover drive, Sehwag just getting toward the pitch off a full delivery and pushes it into the gap for four, not hitting it hard at all

Sehwag backs away just as Mills delivers the ball. Something got in his view. The ball misses the stumps.

0.5

Mills to Sehwag, FOUR, we have a fast outfield! Mills strays onto the pads, off a short length, and Sehwag just whips that away through square before fine leg can cut the ball off

0.6

Mills to Sehwag, no run, better line and length, sits up and Sehwag awkwardly defends

Not the best of starts from Mills.

End of over 1 (9 runs) India 9/0 (RR: 9.00)
V Sehwag    8* (7b 2x4)      KD Mills    1-0-9-0

1.2

O'Brien to Tendulkar, no run, pitches on middle and straightens and thats turned to square leg

2.2

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length outside off, tapped to point, 'WAIT!' is the call

2.3

Mills to Tendulkar, no run, back of a length, much straighter, darts back in, Tendulkar again tries to tuck it to the on side but cannot time it and the ball rolls away near off stump

2.4

A bit murky out there ...

2.5

Mills to Sehwag, no run, pitches it up just outside off stump and Sehwag leaves it be

2.6

Mills to Sehwag, 1 run, short of a length on the stumps, Sehwag hops up and gets the wrists into play, turning the ball just past square leg for a single to retain strike

Jesse Ryder at short cover for the aerial drives.

3.1

O'Brien to Sehwag, no run, good ball, pitched up on a length and slanting back in from outside off stump, no footwork from Sehwag as he pushes at it loosely and gets beaten

3.2

O'Brien to Sehwag, no run, a touch fuller and Sehwag is rooted to his crease as he swings and misses, he was looking to drill that over extra cover but just didn't get to the pitch

3.3

O'Brien to Sehwag, no run, well bowled, this time he holds back the length and pitches closer to off stump and Sehwag defends it to cover

"Any showers at Mclean Park?" asks Phil Jones. "I'm sitting in my office in Clive (9km south of the ground)and she's pretty consistent outside!" Nope, no rain yet.

3.4

O'Brien to Sehwag, FOUR, now he connects, slamming a fullish delivery over extra cover

3.5

O'Brien to Sehwag, FOUR, a much better shot, and the way to deal with the full delivery, clipping it with hard wrists and just beating a running mid-on, top placement from Sehwag

3.6

O'Brien to Sehwag, 1 run, back of a length on middle and leg and bunted to mid-on for one more

End of over 4 (9 runs) India 23/0 (RR: 5.75)

Ah shucks, here comes the rain!

4.2

Mills to Sehwag, no run, better stuff from Mills, pitched up on a length and slanting it in, Sehwag quickly brings the straight bat down and pats it back down the track

4.3

Mills to Sehwag, no run, just back of a length outside off and driven straight to point

4.40pm local Time to resume the cricket. Mills has the ball. Sehwag on strike.

4.35pm local The skies have indeed cleared up. The umpires are just about to descend. Some of the Indian fans are swaying in the stands. The New Zealanders are in the field. The Powerplays will be in blocks of eight, four and three overs. Loud cheer as the Indian openers come back out.

4.20pm local Play will start at 4.40pm local - thats 20 minutes from now.

4.15pm local It will be a 38-over match. Three bowlers can bowl eight overs, and two can bowl seven. The New Zealanders are out there fielding so its likely to start soon. Watch this space for more.

4.05pm local It has become much brighter now, I'm told, and you can finally see some blue in the sky. The main covers are coming off.

4.00pm local The players and umpires are having a look at the middle. There's Gary Kirsten walking out to inspect the outfield now. A few of the New Zealanders are out as well. The run-up covers are now being lifted.

3.45pm local The drizzle has stopped. Now begins the hard work for the ground staff. Here comes the Super Sopper. And the umpires are walking out. The skies are still grey though.

"In Form 3 Maori class at school we had to learn to say Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu and its a great pick up line," says Dave Lewy.

3.35pm local I hear its beginning to clear up. Stay tuned.

Naveen found the name of that hill more like a mountain: "Is that really a name or keyboard got stuck ? I gave up after trying to pronounce it few times."

Ranjeet thinks he's nailed it: "The place means "The place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'land eater', played his flute to his loved one" Can't pronounce that once. Sachin is way too easy compared to that. VVS would be the only exception."

3.20pm local Still the same. If you are looking for something fun to do while passing the time, do read our man on tour Sidharth Monga's latest diary here. And if you see Monga anywhere in Napier, please ask him to come online.

Here's a good piece on England's Claire Taylor and Isa Guha by Nishi Narayanan - click away.

Leigh Clements: "More Fun While It Rains: After years of struggling with Indian players names, lets see if some of the Indian viewers can pronounce the name of this hill in the Hawkes Bay. "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu" Good Luck!"

Or, you could have a look at Indian actress and IPL co-owner Preity Zinta, who is at the match.

3.05pm local No hope in sight. Its forecast for much more and its not stopping at Napier.

2.55pm local If this keeps up we're certainly going to see the umpires take a call on how many overs to limit. Heck, Creedence Clearwater Revival could have cut an entire LP with this amount of rain.

In fact, I wonder if CCR wrote that song about cricket in Napier ..."Long as I remember the rain been comin' down/Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground/Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun/And I wonder still I wonder who'll stop the rain..."

An email from Sachin ... no, not him, but still: "We've had to wait six years for India to come back here, we've got them over at the best time of the year even; It's insanely sunny here in Auckland. This was not supposed to happen, we've already had to tolerate a rain-affected series versus the Windies. There will be a lot of furious fans if this series goes down the same way."

2.45pm local Still drizzling, sorry to say. This is an annoying drizzle. Fo shizzle. This looks like an incessant fall, not hard rain but steady. Anu Malik's heart would be paining right about now.

"Rain has stopped in Hastings which is enough of an excuse for me to loosen the tie and come on over to the game," says an enthusiastic Matt. Not shirking now, are you?

Mike, on the other hand, is just plain bored, methinks. "Perhaps if the players wore wet suits?"

Hemant wants to know if we can convert this into a Twenty20. Steady now. Brad has the superb idea that we fly the teams to Wellington while the sun is shinning there because it looks like the rain will be around for the game on Friday too. Kerplunk.

2.35pm local Good news. Looks to have lessened. Fingers crossed. Nothing like Silverchair's Acid Rain.

"When Sheep/Beef farmers want rain in Napier the answer is easy - arrange an international cricket match!" Thats from Tom Corkill. Cory, 5km away from the ground in Ahuriri, says its not raining at all there.

"It is great to see Sachin and Sehwag opening for India after awhile," says John. "When was the last time these two opened before?" Just recently, in Sri Lanka, last month. In fact, exactly a month ago - February 3. And India have not played an ODI series since then.

2.27pm local Michael, from Hamilton, says the sun is belting down over there. Shine some in Napier please! The covers are over the square. Its not a hard rain, but a drizzle. It has not dampened the spirits of the fans. There isn't a large crowd out, but some folks have shown up.

"Not another rain disturbed series. I'm still drying out my pads from my rain drenched match from the Parnell over 35's on the weekend," says ... erm ... John Key.

2.20pm local The umpires have converged and the bails are being lifted. Phil Jones, you've jinxed us! The sheets of rain are slanting across the ground and have forced everyone off. Does not look good I'm afraid. Its galoshes and umbershoot time. Sorry, thats slang for umbrella. Well at least it was in my house when I was growing up. Anyhooooooooow, all we can do is sit and hope the rain blows its way over to some other place. I will have updates for you as soon as I get them, rest assured.

4.4

Mills to Sehwag, no run, starts off with a short delivery that gets Sehwag up onto his toes, and he does well to drop the ball down near his feet, that was well bowled by Mills

4.5

O'Brien to Tendulkar, 1 run, better ball, short and sliding in and he jumps up, looking to turn the ball to the on side, they set off and O'Brien, running to get the ball, collects with Sehwag, who goes down like a ton of bricks, the bowler collects and throws it at the stumps with batsman nowhere in the frame but cannot hit

7.5

O'Brien to Sehwag, FOUR, he goes hard, he goes straight, he goes four! Pitched up on a length and there's no footwork but plenty of clubbing from Sehwag, who smacks it wide of mid-on
