India in New Zealand ODI Series - 5th ODI

New Zealand v India

New Zealand won by 8 wickets (with 118 balls remaining)

Dominic: "Instead of immense fun - why not try "mad gaiety" Righto! Meanwhile, the players are walking out to the middle. Here we go...

Gaurav Bawa: "Same team ... Whyyyyyyyyyyy?????"

Ben: "I am feeling a little out of place in my beige brigade shirt amonst a thousand indians on the terraces but am lovin their passion & energy- and that's before they've started!"

Jim:"Does anyone know the song that the Kiwi team came out to on Wednesday night? It had a bit of a James Bond riff in it and the tune is annoying me! Any readers able to help please?"

Charles Liang: "Whenever we go through a dry spell in New Zealand, we schedule cricket matches. It's a fool-proof irrigation plan."

Dale: "For me, Nash will always be remembered for bowling the last over in an ODI against South Africa in Hamilton (I think). Needing four of the last delivery to win, Nash duly served up a juicy full toss in which Klusener dispatched it back over his head for half a dozen. I'm sure some cricketing nerd will find the scorecard and critique my memory."

Michael: "I live about 500metres from Eden Park and about 80% of the fans who were walking past my house to the game were Indian. The roar from the stadium is amazing and the game hasn't even started."

Sai: "There better not be any immense fun or furious frivolity today. Come up with something new. Or else..." Tsk tsk .. not even furious frivolity? Hmm....What a kill joy.

3:02 pm: Toss: India have won and Dhoni says he will bat first. India are playing with the same team. Vettori says there will be more rain today and he would have bowled first. With the reduction in the game, Scott Styris replaces Ewen Thompson, says Vettori.

Pitch: It's a well rolled hard track. Not much grass. Experts reckon it looks like a good batting wicket.

The game to start at 3.30 pm. I will be back after a short while.

2:37 pm: It has stopped raining. Toss at 3.00 pm and game to start at 3.30 pm. 9-4-4 is the Powerplays situation. Three bowlers can bowl 9 overs and two eight. It's a 43-over game

Rob Patrick from NZ is a nasty mood: "Every kiwi knows that the last tour of the season is always heavily affected by rain. Surprise surprise, it rains during autumn in NZ, like everywhere else in the world. Wait for the test matches to also be heavily affected by light." Be worried ... very worried.

Vivek replies to another reader's query. "Well according to stats, march is the month of lowest avg rainfall. Click here ." Lowest rainfall in March? Be worried ... very worried.

Sanj: "you are running a quiz here..leaving it up to people to find out the number of overs... the answer is 9*3+8*2=43..eureka" Ha! sorry forgot that minor detail! Have updated it now.

Venkat: "I agree with Bala. Watching Peter McGlashan or Sara McGlashan shouldn't matter much. After all its the same family and she scored more than him in the previous game."

Rivjot: "So basically play will start in 45 mins from now. I'm quite sure that it will rain again in those 45 mins. Can someone tell what is the month when it doesnt rain in NZ?" Well-placed sources tell me that it's on that extra day in the leap year.

Sivaram: "Talking about the SA vs NZ match, I too remember and the amount of time it took for the third umpire to decide whether Cairns was run out or not. What a match it was. I was jumping up and down at my home in tension and fell down when Nash was caught by Zulu in the deep!"

2:30 It's still raining.

Bala has an idea: "Meanwhile, why don't you promote women's cricket by telling that India is going decent against Aus here and NZ against Eng like this here.

Jay Kumar: " ...am particularly interested even more in this game as I am about to release a song for India Cricket fans which I have written and produced. It is called I am an India Fan and it is by Jay Kumar and The IFK. The music man that plays the music at the NZ matches, Mark McLeod, has got a copy and is looking to play it at Eden Park - the first public airing of the song. So far, Sky Sports not showing the game due to rain delay so would be very keen to know if you hear the song during the delay. It is mainly in english with separate ditties for some of the popular India Players. If you do, please let me know what you think of it !" Haven't heard it yet but good effort sir to get it till here. Hope it's a hit.

2:22 Pm The covers are still on. What a summer's day.

Aniket: "Working in night shift, its time to leave and go to sleep ... will i get some action ?? (cricketing ofcourse)" Dunno about cricket, if you are going to sleep, you are not going to get any action.

And Andrew Dunford has struck again in his inimitable fashion (and as a related aside hey Resident Rodent of RSC, I refuse to name you despite your mails to me!). Meanwhile Andrew says, "While you are waiting, a quick match report from the under-9 grade in sunny Wellington. Collegians Aces 130/5 beat Karori Crocodiles 68/6 at Kelburn Park." All I can say is Shut up Dungford (TM). For the uninitiated RSC is a usenet cricket group. Cricinfo grew from there to be where it is now. Some say, the early days were better!

2:06 pm Here we go again. The covers are back on.

Tanwir is living his life: "Lets have some positive talk please - none of this "lets see if it buckets down again"! I am in London and its 1am here. Plan to stay up all night! So far I've had spicy chorizo linguine, coke zero and some mint chocolate. Plan to have popcorn later. " Stop it you glutton!

Harikrishnan talks about Nash: "Thats the six that you're reminded of? How about Nash's sweep six that was not quite a six, in that match against SA in the Benson & Hedges 97 trophy - Round Robin Match. That six hit a part of the rope that had disentangled and was jutting out from the circumference of the rope. It was awarded a 4 nonetheless and as a result NZ needed 3 off the last ball. Alas it was not to be."

Sachin sends a url for that game

2:03 pmThe drizzle has momentarily stopped. The groundstaff are getting ready to take the covers off. Let's see if it buckets down again.

1:22 pm local time: Hi there. Welcome to the fifth ODI between New Zealand V India. It has been drizzling there for the last 20 minutes. The scheduled time for the toss is eight minutes away. Don't think we will have it in time. We are in for a delayed start.

I am Sriram Veera and thanks for logging on. While we wait read the lovely tour diary on Dion Nash's water business. Done by Sidharth Monga. It's a premium water that Nashy sells. Interesting choice for name: 420. Monga runs with it rather well.

I remember Nash picking Tendulkar's wicket a few times during the late 90's. Also, his big straight six against Allan Donald. Poor fellow, was very injury prone. Nothing surprising considering he is a Kiwi. Must be the water there!

Toss hasn't happened yet of course. So, teams haven't been announced either. We have to wait for the drizzle to stop before we can get any proper news.

Brad is in a cynical mood today: "Well once again the New Zealand summer turns it on for all! Great stuff. I'm sure every cricket fan the world over has been frustrated by this rain. Anyway to the point: With the NZ Test Squad named all ready I personally think that the black caps players that have been under performing will feel no real pressure to up their game. Sure there will be the "do it for the team" "do it for NZ" attitude but I honestly don't feel that they will really care that much knowing that this series is a write off all ready."

Sachin: "I am rooting for India to Win, but I want a close game where the bowlers have some say, I say enuff of the run fest."

The forecast is for mostly cloudy and light drizzle. As for now, nothing to do but wait. So check back in say five or ten minutes. Let's see what happens.

Yours or mine? It looked both were going to stand and watch but Styris moved in the end and dived to hold a tumbling catch. Two down. Wickets and runs. Where is Bill Lawry I say.
