India in New Zealand ODI Series - 3rd ODI

New Zealand v India

India won by 58 runs

All set for the start, Sehwag is on strike and will face Kyle Mills. One slip in place

1.25 pm Christchurch time: Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the third ODI between India and New Zealand being played in Christchurch. The visitors lead the series 1-0 and have dominated with the bat. They were well on their way to a sizable score before rain intervened. The news is that Daniel Vettori will be missing this ODI to be with his wife Mary as they are expecting the birth of their first child later in the day. Brendon McCullum will be filling in as captain - for the first time in an ODI.

1.30 pm: It's a sunny day in Christchurch, says our man Sidharth Monga there, so hopefully we'll have a full game. New Zealand have won the toss and opted to bowl. Two changes for the home team - Jeetan Patel in for Vettori and Tim Southee replaces Iain O'Brien. India have retained the same team, so still no Ishant Sharma.

The pitch is expected to favour batting, though it's got some green patches on it, and with the small boundaries, we may well be in for a high-scoring game. However, the boundaries have been extended a little, particularly the straighter ones, but they're still smaller than most. Ross Taylor celebrates his 25th birthday today, but it'll be while before we see him bat.

1.40 pm: Still about 20 minutes left for the start, so you can read preview to the game in the meantime. Virender Sehwag has been the player to watch out for, delivering blistering starts for India in both the matches so far. Read Sidharth Monga's - our man in Christchurch - take on his performance in this series.

Rita Gupta gives us the first feedback of the day, and a very well meant one: "It is 7.30 pm in Boston, USA and we would like to wish Daniel Vettori and his wife Mary a very healthy and bouncy baby. "

Interesting choice by New Zealand as they've bowled first in the two ODIs and gone for aplenty.

Dan V: "THANK YOU Rita Gupta!!!!" We hope you're the real guy

New Zealand will take this. On a small ground and on a pitch that's made for runs, they've kept India relatively quiet, particularly in this powerplay.

Srini: "How many times Gambhir gets out trying to play the same shot? A fan like me who is watching can point this out, what is the team & coach are doing? can't they tell him not to try that silly shot? He is much better when playing square cut rather than this silly try to run down the keeper (not really third man)."

Obaid: "The way Sachin is going, Saeed Anwar's record may be in danger. I personally liked that innings better though."

He's within striking range of that record 194 here. Six overs still to go.

Zeus from NZ has this highly encouraging weather forecast: "The South Island is going to catch the tail-end of a southerly front, but is expected to be coastal - sometimes they swing right past Canterbury and out to sea. I'm going to guess we'll get most of a game tonight."

44.1

     GD Elliott    7-0-60-1

Unfortunate! Tendulkar has decided to go off the field to get some attention on a possible muscle pull. What an entertaining innings it was. Gets a standing ovation as he walks off with the physio. We'll get you the update on him

45.1

Southee to Raina, 1 run, full on middle and off, struck down to long-on

SK Raina    30* (13b 4x6)      TG Southee    10-0-105-0

Prasad: "McCullum's captaincy is a little puzzling. Using Ryder and Southee in the power play, would mean that you are saving your best bowlers (Mills and Oram) for the end. Now Oram cannot even finish his quota"

India have piled a mammoth score here and have taken advantage of a smallish ground and batsmen-friendly conditions. However, New Zealand bowled poorly feeding the in-form Indian batsmen with overpitched deliveries on a fairly frequent basis. The batting powerplay marked a turning point in India's innings after the hosts had done well early on to limit them to 69 for 2.

Southee was hammered all over the place and the middle-order rallied well around Tendulkar to help India get to this formidable position. New Zealand have an uphill task ahead of them, but they have their share of explosive batsmen to push India. Join us in some time to see how they fare.

End of over 50 (9 runs) India 392/4
SK Raina    38* (18b 5x6)      JD Ryder    5-0-56-0
YK Pathan    1* (2b)      KD Mills    10-0-58-2
