India in New Zealand Test Series - 1st Test

New Zealand v India

India won by 10 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

10.28 am local time Tim McIntosh marks his guard. The debutant Martin Guptill looks on. Zaheer Khan has the new ball. Play!

10.50 am local time We're ten minutes away from the start. In the meantime, read Sambit Bal's latest blog entry.

Here's our first feedback mail for the Test series. It's from Anantha Krishna in India: "I'm feasting on bread and butter at 3 in the morning and was watching 30 rock to keep myself awake!"

Sumeet, from UK, gets nostalgic: "Waking up in the wee hours to watch a match has its own pleasure. remember the WC in '92? Man, we used carry transistors in classrooms and hide a ear plug through our shirts to listen to commentary while a class was on...ahh those nostalgic moments."

Toss: (10.30 am local) Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and India will bowl first.

India (from): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Munaf Patel

New Zealand (from): 1 Tim McIntosh, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Daniel Flynn, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Jesse Ryder, 6 James Franklin, 7 Brendon McCullum (wk), 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Iain O'Brien, 11 Chris Martin

For India, it was always going to be a toss-up between Munaf and Balaji. Munaf was off-colour in the ODIs but he has a chance to impress in the longer format. For Balaji, the question is whether he is Test ready.

Dhoni said at the toss that the pitch will get better for batting as the match progresses. He obviously doesn't want his batsmen getting rolled over in the first couple of hours so it's a safe move. There is a layer of grass on the surface and the NZ openers will have to be careful.

New Zealand expectedly haven't opted for the second spinner. Vettori was quite happy to bat first and Simon Doull said Dhoni's decision was a "bit surprising." The weather conditions are fine, in case you're wondering.

10.20 am local: It's the start of the first day of the first Test between New Zealand and India in Hamilton and thank you very much for joining us. I'm Kanishkaa Balachandran, your companion through this game. It's a very good morning to Sidharth Monga who I hope has found himself a nice seat at the press enclosure in Seddon Park. Raghav and Sanjay are sharing out the scoring.

There was some talk about pushing the start by an hour (12 noon) for the sake of the Indian audience back home. However, New Zealand Cricket have told the broadcasters play will begin as scheduled at 11 am. Common sense prevails. The noon start is a little weird, from the players' point of view. Iain O'Brien even blogged about this when West Indies came over a few months ago. Besides, part of the thrill of watching cricket live on television is getting up at the oddest of hours to catch the first ball, which in this case is 3.30 am in India. Agree with me guys? All of us have done it at some point, tiptoeing across to the living room, frantically reducing the volume to keep the family from waking up.

We'll bring you news of the toss and teams very shortly.

That's lunch and there will be contrasting moods in the dressing rooms. Dhoni called correctly at the toss and his seamers have given India one of their best opening sessions in a Test in recent memory. They didn't go all out on pace and instead persisted on line and length. There was a dropped catch and a run-out opportunity but they didn't let it cost them.

New Zealand will feel aggrieved with Franklin's dismissal but that apart, they were exposed against a very competent seam attack. Join us in half an hour for the second session.

Just a reminder for those who've just joined us that there there are no referrals in this series.

Subash: "The fact that NZ have played one.. I repeat, ONE pull shot all morning shows you the discipline with which the bowlers have plugged away! Even with the slight help from the pitch and conditions, india needed to be disciplined and they have done just that."

We're back. Bon writes in: "Is the pitch like one used in 2002/2003 when both the teams bowled out less than 100! Pbly NZC prepared flat pitches for ODI and T20s so that Indians don't get to practice much on seaming wickes and BCCIs plans to schedule ODIs and T20s ahead of tests so that Test series is won comfortably(Easily Test series is a much bigger prize up for grabs here). Lets see how Indian bat in their innings. As an Indian fan, I wouldn't celebrate much. Not yet!"

Alok: "Why not start the line up with your three best batsmen? Ryder, McCullum and Taylor in that order. The inexperience at 1,2 and 3 puts too much pressure on the above. With Franklin, Vettori and Oram at 7,8 and 9, they don't need to worry too much about a middle order collapse leading to a total rout. "
