Stumps: Sri Lanka won the toss and Jayawardene elected to bat first on a seaming track. There was swing and seam for the bowlers early on. The conditions were helpful for the bowlers. They struck to their task and dismissed Sri Lanka for a cheap total (154). New Zealand in reply are 85 for 2. They trail by 69 runs. Cumming and Fleming are the two batsmen unbeaten at the crease.

That's it from me (Binoy George) and George Binoy for today, please join us tomorrow for the live coverage of day 2. Check out the gallery and Bulletin for the days action.

Welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Christchurch. New Zealand grabbed the advantage on the first day by dismissing Sri Lanka for 154 and reaching 85 for 2 at stumps. Shane Bond and James Franklin were the wreckers-in-chief and Chris Martin picked up his 100th Test wicket. If you missed the first day's action, do read S Rajesh's bulletin.

I'm George Binoy and I'll start proceedings on the second day. Binoy George will join us in a short while. If you'd like to send us feedback, click here.

New Zealand begin 69 runs behind with eight wickets in hand. Craig Cumming and Stephen Fleming have added 12 runs for the third wicket. Muttiah Muralitharan, as usual, holds the key for Sri Lanka. He sent down eight overs for 12 runs on the first day but didn't pick up a wicket. However, he did manage to turn it quite a bit. Can Sri Lanka fight back or will New Zealand gain a sizable lead? Today's play will be crucial to the result.

I'm afraid there's not much of a crowd at the Jade Stadium, looks rather empty. Let's hope the numbers grow as the day proceeds. Lasith Malinga will bowl the first over, from over the wicket to Stephen Fleming. Stay tuned and click here to send us feedback.
