Sri Lanka in New Zealand Test Series - 2nd Test

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 217 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second Test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. This is your commentator, Jamie Alter, and together with the venerable Sriram Veera, I'll be bringing you the commentary.

Toss: The word from the middle is that Sri Lanka have won the toss and have decided to bat. Both sides are unchanged from the first Test at Christchurch.

The Sri Lankan openers, Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya, are making their way out. The umpires, Brian Jerling and Simon Taufel, are already out there to greet them.

Shane Bond will do duty with the new ball. Taufel signals play, and here we go!

0.1

Bond to Tharanga, no run, he begins with a good length ball smack on off stump, and its defended into the offside by the batsman

0.2

Bond to Tharanga, no run, ripper! Pitches on a full length outside off stump with a fair deal of away swing from the left hander, who pokes at it going forward and swings past the bat

0.3

Bond to Tharanga, no run, fullish ball outside off stump again, and it swings past him as he shoulders arms safely

0.4

Bond to Tharanga, no run, good length ball on off stump, Tharanga stands and opens the face of the bat, running it along the ground to gully

1.2

16.2

Franklin to Sangakkara, no run, In the channel outside off, left alone

Being positive isn't always to hit all balls, wrote Sangakkara before the start of this game. And how well he has done that. Picked the right balls to hit and to defend. Although, having said that, he has not left many. This has been a lovely little innings so far

16.3

Bond is back. I wonder whether he liked Casino Royal.

18.1

Bond to Kapugedera, no run, Starts off with a bouncer. Hello Sir! Kapugedera is surprised, adjusts, takes his bottom-hand out of the bat-handle, stabs at it, keeps the ball down

18.2

Bond to Kapugedera, no run, oh ho! Was it well left or beaten? Bond pinged the good length around the offstump and it jagged back in sharply. Kapugedera shouldered arms even as he lunged forward and the ball just sailed over the middle stump...

19.2

Oram to Kapugedera, OUT, Gotcha! the typical subcontinental poke outside off stump. It's a fatal attraction that many from that part of the world share. Length-delivery that pitched outside off and held its line and the youngster couldn't resist a flirt. Caught at third slip.

19.3

Oram to Silva, no run

19.6

Oram to Silva, 1 run, Stop the press. Silva is off the mark. What a lovely feeling it must be for the youngster. Two ducks in your debut is not what you grow up dreaming. A push past cover gets him his first runs in international cricket. Hopefully first of the many.

20.3

Bond to Sangakkara, no run, 137 kmph, slower than the previous delivery but try telling that to Sangakkara. This one was a bouncer and you might be Bradman, if it is well-directed, it always appears as the faster and nastier than the length deliveries. Sangakkara swayed away from that one as it sailed just past offstump

Time for some spin. Vettori will have a bowl. Slip and short-leg in place

23.1

Vettori to Silva, no run, Silva welcomes him with a slog! It was floated outside off, he goes down on his front knee, swipes it across the line, towards mid-on. Where did that one come from? Sangakkara is surprised, goes across for a chat.

23.3

Vettori to Silva, no run

23.4

Vettori to Silva, FOUR, There he goes! Well-flighted delivery, outside off and Silva couldn't hold himself back. Just leaned forward, lofted it cleanly straight over the bowler

25.1

25.2

Vettori to Silva, no run, Huge shout for lbw. That was close. 90kmph delivery. A arm-ball that slid in from outside off, Silva is rapped on the pad as he pushes forward in defense. Maybe .. it struck him outside the line. Tough call.

26.5

Bond to Sangakkara, 1 run, on the hips, tucked away behind square-leg

26.6

Bond to Silva, 1 run, That's lunch. A lemon cut to herald the break. Goes hard at a short-of-length delivery, gets a inside edge that takes the ball to fine-leg. Sangakkara offers some tutorial on batting to Silva as the duo walk back to the pavilion. He gesticulates and I am assuming, so don't hang me if I am wrong, he is saying "don't go hard at the ball." Silva, who celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday, is all ears.

Two different games were played out there in the middle. One when Sangakkara was on strike and the other when he wasn't. A triple strike from Martin rocked the Sri Lankan top order as the batsmen were hustled into mistakes by pace, bounce and movement. Meanwhile Sangakkara carried on as if he was having nets, caressing the cherry all around the park. Still, Fleming would be mighty pleased with the session's work. Join us in forty minutes. Jamie Alter will take up the commentary then.

Hello and welcome back. As Sriram's taking a breather, I'll resume commentary. New Zealand took command of this Test in fine style, but Sangakkara's played a gem. As much as he appeared untroubled at one end, there was mayhem at the other. Sangakkara needs support from the lower order. Jacob Oram has pulled a hamstring and won't bowl any more today. Daniel Vettori will continue.

44.4

Franklin to Silva, no run, gets behind the line to a length-delivery on the off and middle, pushes it back to the bowler

44.5

Franklin to Silva, OUT, Got im! Another one of those fatal pokes. Angled away after landing on a length, a classical left-armer's delivery, and Silva pushes at it, away from his body and Fleming swallows the cherry at first slip. It is his 158th catch. Only two people - Mark Waugh and Brian Lara - have taken more catches than him. A cavalier innings comes to an end. Impetuous, aggressive, at times a bit too aggressive, and a rather interesting little knock.
