Sri Lanka in New Zealand T20I Series - 1st T20I

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 18 runs (D/L method)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the first Twenty20 international between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Wellington. This is your commentator, Jamie Alter, and together with Arun Gopalakrishan, I'll be bringing you all the action as it happens.

Toss: Word from out in the middle is that New Zealand have won the toss and decided to bat. The hosts have handed Mark Gillespie, the medium-fast bowler, and Peter McGlashan, the Northern Districts wicketkeeper, their maiden caps. Shane Bond has been included in today's match, but will be rested for the second Twenty20 in Auckland on December 26.

For Sri Lanka, Marvan Atapattu and Dilhara Fernando return, while Lasith Malinga, who gave Brendon McCullum and a few others a torrid workout in the second Test, has been rested. Prasanna Jayawardene, Sri Lanka's first-choice wicketkeeper for this tour, is in a Wellington hospital after undergoing an emergency appendix operation, and so Kumar Sangakkara will don the gloves again.

Chaminda Vaas will bowl to Brendon McCullum

Vaas to Gillespie, 1 run, last delivery, and its guided to deep point for one

So, New Zealand, after opting to bat first, finish at 162 for 8 after their quota of 20 overs. They'll definitely be a bit disappointed with this effort, seeing their openers got them off to a great start - they put on 80 for the first wicket, but thereon, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and never really got the momentum back.

Jayasuriya, bowling his left arm spin, was the wrecker-in-chief for Sri Lanka - he finished with figures of 3 for 21 from his 4 overs, and it must be said that was a pretty good effort considering there was rain in the air and that the ball must have been pretty slippery when he bowled.

How will the Sri Lanka fare with the bat? We'll know when the Sri Lankan innings begins in 15 minutes time. Do join us then.
