Sri Lanka in New Zealand ODI Series - 1st ODI

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka won by 7 wickets (with 60 balls remaining)

Welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the one-day series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. We've done with the Tests and the Twenty20s and now the five-match ODI series kicks of at Napier.

It's been even-Stevens so far on the tour. New Zealand won the first Test but Sri Lanka drew level in the second. Sri Lanka clinched the first Twenty20 by the duckworth-Lewis method before New Zealand equalised at Auckland. The lead in the ODI series is up for grabs today ... Jamie Alter and George Binoy will be your commentators for this match. I'll start off proceedings and Jamie will take over later.

Daniel Vettori will be leading New Zealand for the ninth time today in the absence of Stephen Fleming who's been given a two-match rest. Vettori has a rather good record as captain, winning six out of his eight matches. He'll be feeling a bit of déjà vu because when Sri Lanka toured New Zealand in 2005-06, Vettori captained the side for the first two ODIs.

Nathan Astle has been declared fit after it was confirmed that he had only bruised his hand, and not broken it, during the second Twenty20 match on Boxing Day. But New Zealand are without Shane bond who's also being rested for the first two games and Kyle Mills, Scott Styris and Jacob Oram are still sidelined with injuries. For more pre-match stuff, check out the preview. I'll have the toss and team news shortly ...

Toss: Vettori's won the toss and New Zealand will bat.

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (capt), Andre Adams, Nathan Astle, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Mark Gillespie, Hamish Marshall, James Marshall, Michael Mason, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor.

Sri Lanka squad: Sanath Jayasuriya, Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Marvan Atapattu, Tillekaratne Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando.

Mark Gillespie makes his one-day debut for New Zealand. He was picked for the Champions Trophy in October but didn't get a game.

Nathan Astle and Brendon McCullum will open for New Zealand. McCullum will take strike, he's facing Chaminda Vaas who's bowling from over the wicket to the right-hander.

0.1

Vaas to McCullum, 1 leg bye, on target first ball, pitches on middle and leg and moves back into the right-hander, McCullum tries to work it through midwicket but gets hit on the pad for a leg bye

0.2

Vaas to Astle, no run, Vaas is swinging it back into the right-hander a fair bit, that one pitched on a good length and cramped the batsman for room, defended back to the bowler

0.3

Vaas to Astle, 1 run, dabbed short on the leg side for a very risky single, McCullum called for that run and was off in a flash

0.4

Vaas to McCullum, no run, cuts him in half! That pitched just outside off stump and bent back into McCullum who played outside the line and was beaten

0.5

Vaas to McCullum, no run, half-hearted appeal for leg before, McCullum got his front foot outside the line of off stump and got hit on the pad by one that swung back in

0.6

Vaas to McCullum, no run, excellent first over from Vaas, he finishes with another that cuts back into the right-hander and cramps him for room

End of over 1 (2 runs) New Zealand 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
BB McCullum    0* (4b)      WPUJC Vaas    1-0-1-0
NJ Astle    1* (2b)

Lasith Malinga will share the new ball. He's bowling from over the wicket to Astle.

1.2

Malinga to McCullum, no run, the speed's up to 149kmh now, better line this time, on a good length on off stump, McCullum defends to covers

1.3

1.5

Malinga to McCullum, no run, pushed to cover on the back foot

BB McCullum    4* (9b 1x4)      SL Malinga    1-0-5-0
NJ Astle    2* (3b)      WPUJC Vaas    1-0-1-0

Just the one slip in place for Vaas.

2.1

Vaas to Astle, no run, short of a length on off and middle stump, the ball cuts back into Astle after pitching and hits him high on the thigh pad

2.2

Vaas to Astle, no run, Attapattu makes an excellent save at cover, that was a half-volley and Astle bashed that hard at cover but didn't get past Marvan

2.3

Vaas to Astle, FOUR, a touch too short and a touch too wide, very uncharacteristic from Vaas, Astle waits for it and cuts through point for his first boundary

2.4

Vaas to Astle, no run, defended on the off side

2.5

Vaas to Astle, no run, excellent length, Astle is caught between going forward and playing back and gets hit on the pad

2.6

Vaas to Astle, no run, loud appeal for leg before, that shaped back into Astle and hit him on the pad in front of leg and middle, possibly slipping down leg side

End of over 3 (4 runs) New Zealand 11/0 (RR: 3.66)
NJ Astle    6* (9b 1x4)      WPUJC Vaas    2-0-5-0
BB McCullum    4* (9b 1x4)      SL Malinga    1-0-5-0

3.1

Malinga to McCullum, no run, good length ball that rises on McCullum on middle and leg stump, defended on the leg side

3.2

Malinga to McCullum, SIX, shot, sheer power from McCullum, it must be said that was a dreadful ball, short and wide, McCullum flays that over point for a flat six, that hit the boundary boards on the full and rebounded back into the field

3.4

Malinga to McCullum, no run, defended back to the bowler, good line and length on off stump

3.5

3.6

Malinga to McCullum, no run, pitches on a good length and slants into the right hander, McCullum tries to work it off the pads but doesn't make contact, it was a good over from Malinga ... apart from that six-ball

End of over 4 (6 runs) New Zealand 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
BB McCullum    10* (15b 1x4 1x6)      SL Malinga    2-0-11-0

4.1

Vaas to Astle, no run

4.2

Vaas to Astle, no run, the line is outside off stump this time and Astle frees his arms to drive, he doesn't time it well and finds point

4.3

Vaas to Astle, no run, defended on the off side, more of an unconvincing thick inside edge really

4.4

Vaas to Astle, no run, another loud lbw appeal, that was on middle and leg and the swing was taking it past leg stump, not out but Astle's problem's against inswing continue

4.5

Vaas to Astle, 1 run, pushed to mid-on and Astle scurries through to get to the other end, Murali was a bit slow off the blocks to cut off the single

4.6

Vaas to McCullum, OUT, lbw! Vaas finally gets one but it's McCullum and not Astle, who's been struggling more against the inswing. This one pitched on off stump, McCullum got his foot across and the ball hit him on the pad soon after pitching, the shape back into the right-hander ensured that it was heading for middle, umpire Steve Davis is convinced

BB McCullum lbw b Vaas 10 (20m 16b 1x4 1x6) SR: 62.50

End of over 5 (1 run) New Zealand 18/1 (RR: 3.60)

5.5

Malinga to Taylor, no run, fullish length on off and middle stump, defended on the front foot

5.6

Malinga to Taylor, 2 runs, short of a length and angling down leg side, glanced off the pads to fine leg for a single, Taylor is off the mark

6.3

Vaas to Astle, no run, you guessed it, another inswinger to the right-hander, it pitched on off and middle and Astle gets an inside edge on to pad

6.4

Vaas to Astle, 1 run, dropped! Astle gives Vaas the charge and gets a massive top-edge, the ball gets a lot of height, it's swirling high up there, Atapattu is at extra cover but Chamara Silva runs across from cover and dives right in front of Atapattu and doesn't even get a hand on it, it was not Silva's catch but he went for it while Atapattu hardly made an effort, bizarre

7.2

Malinga to Astle, no run, short outside the off stump, Astle tries to cut but misses it

7.3

Malinga to Astle, FOUR, short and wide outside off stump again, Astle has a poke at it and edges it wide of second slip for four to third man

7.4

Malinga to Astle, no run, better line and length, just outside off stump, Astle tries to defended on the back foot and gets beaten&

7.5

Malinga to Astle, FOUR, another streaky four, this time Astle edges it over the slip cordon for four more, frustrating stuff from Sri Lanka's point of view

7.6

Malinga to Astle, SIX, this time it's intentional, Astle gets under one thats short and wide outside off and upper cuts it over the third-man fence, superb shot to end a very expensive over

End of over 8 (14 runs) New Zealand 38/1 (RR: 4.75)

8.2

Vaas to Astle, no run, more inswing and Astle gets beaten once again, that pitched on middle and leg, shaped back and hit the pad

8.3

Vaas to Astle, FOUR, a touch too full this time from Vaas, it allows Astle to get his foot forward and drive superbly down the ground for four, he's picking up steam now

8.4

Vaas to Astle, 1 run, a fraction short on middle and leg stump, Astle pivots, swivels and pulls down to long leg for a single

8.5

Vaas to Taylor, no run, leg stump line, Taylor walks across his stumps, trying to work it down to fine leg but the ball hits the pad

8.6

Vaas to Taylor, no run, he should be careful when he walks across his stumps like that, he's in danger of exposing leg stump, this time the ball clips the pad and Sangakkara dives across to collect it

9.5

Malinga to Astle, FOUR, edged through where third slip was just was a moment ago, lucky four admittedly but Malinga isn't helping matters but bowling this wide outside off stump

The pitch has looked good for batting. Apart from Vaas's inswing, nothing has troubled the batsmen.

10.1

Vaas to Taylor, no run, defended to midwicket on the front foot, that pitched on midle and leg and shaped into Taylor

Fernando to Taylor, 1 run, a half-volley outside off stump, Taylor drives through the covers and struggles down the pitch for the single, and remains unbeaten on 128 as New Zealand finish on 285 for 8, great effort from the rookie in just his third game

That was a very good final over from Fernando. A good batting display from the top order, namely big innings from Astle and Taylor, coupled with Fulton's cameo, helped the hosts to a very good total. It must be said that at one stage, when Astle and Taylor hammered 151 runs in excellent time, that it seemed New Zealand would get well over 300, but the Sri Lankan spinners came back well to keep the runs down after Astle's dismissal. Full credit to Taylor, though, who played a stellar innings that showed his maturity even at 22. He clobbered some big sixes, rotated the strike well, and played Muralitharan quite well too to post his maiden ODI hundred in his third appearance.

Sri Lanka have their work cut out for them. Do join us in 40 minutes - thats 15:27 local, 02:27 GMT - for their reply. George will take you through the first 25 overs.
