Sri Lanka in New Zealand ODI Series - 2nd ODI

New Zealand v Sri Lanka

New Zealand won by 1 wicket (with 0 balls remaining)

Hello, hello wherever you are. You've tuned in to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka at Queenstown, and this is your commentator, Jamie Alter, and together with George Binoy, we'll bring you all the action as it unfolds.

This is the final ODI of 2006, and let's hope its a cracker of a contest.

Toss: Word from the ground is that Daniel Vettori has won the toss and elected to bowl. Craig McMillan will play his first one-day cricket international for a year after his brother-in-law Nathan Astle was ruled out due to a badly bruised right thigh. James Marshall will open the batting with Brendon McCullum while McMillan will slot into the order at No.6.

Sri Lanka have dropped Dilhara Fernando in place of Farveez Maharoof.

The pitch/weather: The skies are overcast, its windy, and the deck looks like it will assist the bowlers. There should be some swing on hand, given the conditions. Having been spanked to most parts of McLean Park in Napier, New Zealand's bowling attack is looking to improve on a bowling performance that saw them give up a hefty target 285 with ten overs to spare.

They said:
Daniel Vettori: "The bowling plan is exactly the same. It's just about implementation, which we let slip in Napier. Sri Lanka bat down to seven and eight, so you've got to take wickets at the top and try not to buy those wickets, which we tended to do in the first game."

Mahela Jayawardene:"We have to keep a combination, we need to keep confidence in the guys and have the senior group, the match-winners, in form as we build up to the World Cup."

Mark Gillespie will open the bowling. Upul Tharanga will face. Two slips in place, three men on the offside, Here we go, folks!

0.1

Gillespie to Tharanga, 1 run, squares him up with a straight delivery that pitches on middle and leg and moves away, he plays with soft hands and picks up one that shoots towards gully

0.2

Gillespie to Jayasuriya, no run, another straight delivery on the stumps, nothing fancy, not trying too much, keeps it tight and Jayasuriya defends coming half forward

0.3

Gillespie to Jayasuriya, no run, this one's on a good length on middle and leg, Jayasuriya gets over it in an attempt to work it to leg, but gets caught in the stroke and has to defend

0.4

Gillespie to Jayasuriya, no run, quicker, shorter and going down leg stump, Jayasuriya swivels on the clip and tickles it around the corner to McCullum, off the gloves, its a clear one and they all go up, but the umpire is unmoved. Jayasuriya gets a life early! What a wicket that would have been!

0.5

Gillespie to Jayasuriya, 1 run, fuller, but just a tad, and its pushed to mid-off for a sharp single

0.6

Gillespie to Tharanga, 2 runs, short of a good length on leg stump, he works that off the hips to short fine leg, who doesnt quite get to it, and they complete two runs easily

So we've already seen a chance not given in New Zealand's favour. Jayasuriya gets a reprieve. Hmmm...

1.3

Mason to Jayasuriya, no run, quicker delivery on a length, pitches on middle and off, Jayasuriya tries to work it to leg but gets all tangled up, there was a second noise there, an inside edge in most cases

1.4

Mason to Jayasuriya, OUT, gone! Bowled! This one pitches short of a good length on middle and leg, Jayasuriya's quickly into position to pull but again gets all tangled up, and the result is that he chops onto the base of leg stump, and he's a goner!

ST Jayasuriya b Mason 1 (7m 8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 12.50

Mason strikes early, and Jayasuriya departs shortly after he was given a life off Gillespie. New Zealand will take that.

Mahela Jayawardene's the new man in

1.5

Mason to Jayawardene, no run, quick delivery moving down leg stump, Jayawardene stands and tries to run it fine, ball clips the top of the hip guard en route to McCullum, and they all go up in appeal, but thats clearly not got any bat on it

1.6

Mason to Jayawardene, no run, super delivery, on a good length outside off stump and rising, drawing him into the backfoot prod on his toes, and he's beaten, but just

2.6

Gillespie to Jayawardene, 1 no ball, he oversteps, its a good ball, standing up outside off and forcing Jayawardene to defend stoically off the toes again, but a run still

2.6

Gillespie to Jayawardene, FOUR, full on leg stump, and Jayawardene just flicks it over mid-wicket for four, easy pickings if you bowl there to a batsman like him

4.2

Nick Chandra replies to Thilan: "Marvan may be at the end of his career but his vast experience with over 8000 ODI runs can be invaluable to Srilanka under pressure. Srilanka is not just a side that will attack from the first ball but have the ability to change their strategy according to conditions with their class batting line up. This is a taste of things to come for NZ in the World Cup. Jayasuriya is still the greatest ODI allrounder of all time and he will relish conditions in the WI."

Thanks Jamie. At the half-way stage, the advantage belongs to New Zealand. Sangakkara and Atapattu were ticking along nicely but Vettori's strike has swung the advantage New Zealand's way. However, Sri Lanka do have a longer batting line-up today with Chamara Silva, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Farveez Maharoof to come.

New Zealand will be delighted at this improved bowling effort but remember, it's never a bad (or good) score until both teams have batted. Sri Lanka's run-rate may be only around 4 but this isn't a belter like we had at Napier. . What do you think? .

41.1

Adams to Sangakkara, no run, loud appeal for lbw but the umpire says not out, that pitched outside off stump, Sangakkara moved across and got hit on the pad, close shout but was the impact outside off, or did he get an edge?

41.2

Adams to Sangakkara, 1 run, driven to long on for a single

41.3

Adams to Silva, FOUR, shrot ball outside off stump and Silva smashes it, absolutely smashes it, through midwicket for four, there was no chance of stopping that, he hit it very hard

41.4

Adams to Silva, OUT, Sangakkara is run out backing up too far! Silva drove straight back at Adams who stretched one hand out and got fingertips to it, the ball crashed into the stumps at the non-striker's end and Sangakkara was found short by the third umpire

KC Sangakkara run out 89 (155m 122b 10x4 0x6) SR: 72.95

That's an important wicket for Sri Lanka, some might say Sangakkara was unlucky to get out in that fashion but I believe that if you decide to back up too far, you have to accept the risk. What do you think?

Dilshan is the new batsman. New Zealand will be delighted to get a wicket at this stage because the new batsman will take time in getting his eye in.

Hamish took the catch. Maharoof is the new batsman, Sri Lanka have two new batsmen at the crease with seven slog overs left. There's a slip in palce, in the 43rd over, how often do you see that?

48.2

Vettori has a word with his bowler, who then moves around the wicket

48.3

Gillespie to Vaas, 1 leg bye, speared in at a yorker length outside leg stump, Vaas swings at it and picks up a leg bye to short fine leg

back over the wicket to the right-hander

Last over coming up, ala Michael Mason

49.1

Mason to Vaas, 1 run, slower ball on a good length, Vaas guides it to point for one

49.2

Mason to Maharoof, SIX, yowza! Fullish outside off stump, Maharoof walks across his stumps and just picks it up powerfully, and sends it some 30 metres over the long-on ropes! Thats a terrific blow!

49.3

Mason to Maharoof, 1 run, fuller outside off stump, again Maharoof makes room and slogs across the line, but its all along the ground down to long-on and they settle for one

49.4

Mason to Vaas, FOUR, a low full toss outside off stump, and Vaas picks it very well and slams it just over Maharoof's head, and that screaches along the turf and beats long-off, four runs!

49.5

Mason to Vaas, 1 run, fired in quick on middle and leg, Vaas slogs to mid-on for one

49.6

Mason to Maharoof, 1 leg bye, a low full toss outside leg stump, Maharoof swivels but cant put it away, ends up with a leg bye around the corner as McCullum runs in

So after a stop-start innings, Sri Lanka settle for 224. Much of that was down to Sangakkara's brilliant 89 - the highest individual score at this venue - which steadied the ship after the new-ball duo had left Sri Lanka hurting. He was unfortunate not to get to his hundred. Cameos from Chamara Silva and Maharoof proved worthy, though Sri Lanka would have been eyeing 240 at least.

Do join us in about 40 minutes - thats 15:24 local, 02:24 GMT - for New Zealand's reply. It'll be Jamie to take you through the first 25 overs of their chase.

End of over 50 (14 runs) Sri Lanka 224/7
MF Maharoof    29* (24b 2x4 1x6)      MJ Mason    10-1-50-2
WPUJC Vaas    9* (7b 1x4)      MR Gillespie    10-0-46-2
