It is definitely a better track, suits batting. Not much seam or swing. And of course, Jayasuriya did pull off a stunner but the track is also a pretty good one.

Murugan Veerabahu makes a point. "I think atapatuu is a very important player for this team, and the middle order is the perfect spot for him. Sri Lankas top 4 players are all attacking, if they click the total is massive, but at times they all fail, and we would need some one who can accumalate in singles and get a decent total, so that the bowlers have something to bowl at. Hence the middle order is perfect for him. oh and not everyone can bat like sanath :) "

Patel to Sangakkara, 1 run, yorker length, on the middle stump line, jabbed away past point. Very well bowled.

44.2

Patel to Kapugedera, no run, floated on the offside, driven, in the air, back down the track but it falls short of the bowler. Sangakkara dives back to make his crease, just in case Patel decides to fling back a throw

44.3

Patel to Kapugedera, 1 leg bye

44.4

Patel to Sangakkara, 1 run, comes down the track, Patel pings the yorker-length again, dug out past point. This is intelligent bowling. He went wide of the crease and hurled it across at the blockhole length

44.5

Patel to Kapugedera, no run

44.6

Patel to Kapugedera, no run, too shot, pulled straight to midwicket. He should have put that away,.

End of over 45 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 210/4 (RR: 4.66)
CK Kapugedera    3* (9b)      JS Patel    9-0-41-0
KC Sangakkara    62* (94b 6x4)      AR Adams    8-2-37-1

45.1

Adams to Sangakkara, FOUR, innovation! Sangakkar just shuffles right across the stumps, ends up outside offstump, picks a fullish delivery from there, and laps it over short fineleg. Aha! here we go.. the final five overs and time for some fun

45.2

Adams to Sangakkara, SIX, Slap! Short and wide, Sangakkar thrashes it over point. Two fours in a row. Oh hold on ... six given but the ball landed on the ropes, and that should be given as a four. Not six but the umpire has given it the maximum

45.3

Adams to Sangakkara, FOUR, Wham! Full this time and Sangakkara drills it powerfully to deep point. There is a man there but he is not able to move across to his right in time to make the stop. Such was the power.

45.4

Adams to Sangakkara, 1 run, again full, again drilled to deep point but this time straight to the fielder

45.5

Adams to Kapugedera, 1 run

45.6

46.2

Gillespie to Kapugedera, 1 run, again fullish length, dabbed away to thirdman

46.3

Gillespie to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, Sangakkara again tries to walk across the offstump and lap it around the corner but doesn't make proper contact . In fact no contact and it runs off the leg bye

46.4

Gillespie to Kapugedera, no run, another near blockhole -length delivery, dug back to the bowler

46.5

Gillespie to Kapugedera, 1 run, full in length, driven to long-on

46.6

Gillespie to Sangakkara, 1 run, Again Sangakkar goes across to the offside, Gillespie tries a yorker, ends up as a low full-toss, turned straight to Bond at short fine leg. A foot either side of the former cop and Sanga would have got a boundary

End of over 47 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 232/4 (RR: 4.93)
KC Sangakkara    79* (102b 8x4 1x6)      MR Gillespie    9-1-23-3

47.1

Bond to Sangakkara, OUT, Sangakkar falls. Quite a big wicket this. Just three overs left but he was in a murderous mood. He goes for a pull shot but ends up skying it to midwicket for Taylor to hold a dolly. Very valuable knock, steered his side through the crisis.

KC Sangakkara c Taylor b Bond 79 (131m 103b 8x4 1x6) SR: 76.69

47.2

Bond to Maharoof, no run, fullish, outside offstump, driven to mid-off

47.3

Bond to Maharoof, no run, Slower one! beaten comprehensively. Maharoof is through his shot a light year before the ball arrives

47.4

Bond to Maharoof, 2 runs, fullish, sliced past backward point, Mason rushes across to make a very good diving, tumbling, sliding stop

47.5

Bond to Maharoof, FOUR, The slower one doesn't work this time. Maharoof backs away, waits for the loopy delivery to come to him and then murders it down the ground

47.6

Bond to Maharoof, 1 run, yorker, jabbed away to the offside , it rolls away towards Taylor

End of over 48 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 239/5 (RR: 4.97)

48.1

Gillespie to Maharoof, 1 run

48.2

Gillespie to Kapugedera, 1 run

48.3

Gillespie to Maharoof, SIX, The white ball flies over long-on! Fullish, Maharoof, takes his front foot outside the line, gets under the ball and up she flies.. Maximum!

48.4

Gillespie to Maharoof, 1 run, Good comeback. yorker, right there at the middle stump line, stabbed away for a single

48.5

Gillespie to Kapugedera, 1 run, And again. Good delivery

48.6

Gillespie to Maharoof, SIX, Maharoof lets it rip again! From wide of the crease, it didn't quite come out as a yorker, lands on a length, and Maharoof opens up in his stance, and just biffs it over long leg. Super whack! Disappointing end to what has been a very good day out for Gillespie

End of over 49 (16 runs) Sri Lanka 255/5 (RR: 5.20)
MF Maharoof    21* (9b 1x4 2x6)      MR Gillespie    10-1-39-3

49.1

Bond to Kapugedera, 1 run, attempts a yorker, drives to long on. Maharoof back on strike

49.2

Bond to Maharoof, no run, slightly slower in pace, on a length, outside the offstump, Maharoof had backed outside legstump, tries to swing it across but is beaten by the change in pace

49.3

Bond to Maharoof, OUT, Gone! banged it short and outside offstump, Maharoof swatted it, like a down the line forehand, in the air, and down the ground, Adams moves to his right, and takes a smart catch. The neat little cameo comes to an end

MF Maharoof c Adams b Bond 21 (10m 11b 1x4 2x6) SR: 190.90

49.4

Bond to Kapugedera, 1 run

49.5

Bond to Vaas, FOUR, Now Vaas joins in the slog fun. Moves to the on side, biffs a low full-toss to the cow corner.

49.6

Bond to Vaas, 1 run, banged it in short, slogged away to the leg side but no timing there and will get a single to the midwicket region.

Sri Lanka have set a stiff 263-run target. Sanath Jayasuriya exploded at the start and raced away to a manic fifty. Then Gillespie struck. Thrice. The run rate slowed down, froze before Sangakkara pressed his foot on the accelerator. Maharoof indulged in some hit and giggle and Sri Lanka have ended up with a very healthy total. Join us in a while for the chase.

One last comment, on the Atapattu issue. This time from Chan Fonseka, "I agree with Murugan that a consolidator is needed (Gurusinha, anyone?) but Atapattu is experienced enough to keep the scoreboard ticking while he consolidates. He does not achieve anything by playing 20 dot balls before he scores. He should play like Bevan or Hussey (or even Collingwood) does in the middle order. Look at young Kapugedera - able to rotate the strike with every ball. A batsman at this level need not have to take risks to do this. I think this is more about Atapattu's current confidence levels, match fitness and perhaps overall sluggishness between the wickets. His attitude is correct but he is just too rusty to execute at the moment. I think he will be fine by March. I hope they give some chances to Chamara Silva as well, in India. "
