Broom made his international ODI debut against West Indies in January 2009, followed by his T20 debut against Australia in February 2009. But a string of unsatisfactory performances meant he was dropped in 2010 from the ODI and T20 teams and featured for his country only once in 2013.

Broom joined Derbyshire in 2015 on a two-year contract, but hoping for a national recall, he did not return to the English county side for the second year. After topping the List-A Ford Trophy run charts in 2015-16, followed by a string of strong performances in the first-class Plunket Shield, Broom was again selected to New Zealand's ODI side, where he scored 228 runs in three ODIs including scores of 109* and 97 against Bangladesh in December 2016. As a result of that showing - and an injury to Martin Guptill - he got a T20 recall as well, for the 20-overs series that followed in early January 2017.
