John Butterworth was the older of two brothers who went to Harrow and played for Oxford University. An opening batsman, he performed well enough in the Freshmen's match to win a place in the side for the first match of the season against Middlesex, but that was his only appearance of the summer. He played twice in his second year but not after that. He joined the RAF and in 1936 played for the RAF against the Royal Navy at Lord's. He was killed while flying in 1941, ten months after his brother had died in France.
