John Hickson played four games for Middlesex with no success. He was a good tennis player, playing in the men's doubles at Wimbledon, and a scratch golfer. He played cricket in South Africa and in 1888-89 he stood as the umpire in the second Test between England and South Africa at Newlands even though he was only 24.
