'Happy feeling within the camp' - Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez has said that Pakistan are looking to carry the momentum of a 2-1 series win into the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka despite the heavy defeat in the third T20 match against Australia in Dubai. After losing the ODI series, Pakistan bounced back to win the first two T20s, but collapsed to their lowest T20 total in the third match while chasing.

"Despite losing the third game, I can confidently say that there is a happy feeling within the camp and we are gearing up for the mega event," Hafeez said. "There is a concern in chasing a target, but I am confident that we will improve and do well in the World Twenty20. We must lift our energy levels while we chase."

Pakistan won the first match by seven wickets, before winning the second in a one-over eliminator to take an unassailable lead in the three match series. But chasing Australia's 168 in the third, Pakistan's top order crumbled against the pace of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. The team eventually folded for 74 with only three batsmen managing double-digit scores, a performance that should serve as a "wake-up call" according to Hafeez, in an otherwise good series for the team.

"The way we approached (the target), it wasn't good and we lost too many wickets earlier giving us no chance to recover. There was no point to be complacent and everyone wanted to win the game but Australia played better cricket than us."

"T20 cricket is all about doing the right thing at the right time and we are doing all what has to be done. We are looking forward to the mega event and you will see the difference in our next games."

Pakistan made only one change in the squad for the final T20 - bringing in Yasir Arafat for Sohail Tanvir, after going unchanged in the first two - to allow maximum practice time to their first-choice players.

"I actually wanted to give more chances to our main players, mainly because we don't have much time left ahead of the event. So I decided to stick with lineup," Hafeez said.

funny people! out of 11 batsman only Malik was the one who got out on a very gud delivery.. anyways no excuses..... Players always come from domestic cricket .... there is no one better than malik in your domestic circle. players like Asad shafique got chances continually without any exclusion from team for 3 to 4 years and now he has started to perform ...... its the matter of giving confidence not about players capability. you people always love afridi for his batting and you want him to play even if he is not performing for 100 matches ......

Why didn't he bowl Razzaq for all 4 overs when he was doing superbly? Why didn't he bowl him self with the new ball. Why bowl or even play Shoaib? Asad Shafiq should be playing instead of Shoaib who has never performed for last 3 years now.

  • Zahidsaltin on September 12, 2012, 15:16 GMT

What has Shoaib Malik done in last 3 years to earn his place ?? Hafiz, you have lost your wicket in the same fashion multiple times. Why push the up wards. You either play uppish with some force behind it or stay on the ground.

Pakistan Cricket will never go anywhere if they still keep drafting in people like Yasir Arafat, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Sami. The fact that the management think they can afford to leave out young talents like Hammad Azam, Junaid Khan from any format at all shows that they are only going backwards. The best seamer for them at the moment is Junaid Khan and he's not in a World Cup squad. And I do blame Misbah for not having any faith in Azam even when he was selected to play one or two matches here and there. Junaid and Azam need enough opportunites to be groomed for future but they keep wasting time on people like Malik, Arafat, Sami or taufeeq Umar . Inclusion of Azam, a seam bowling all rounder would've brought perfect balance in that ODI team if they did insist on playing just one front line seamer alongside since they don't have a decent 3rd seamer at the moment. I just hope Nasir Jamshed is given the opportunity to open in Tests in time.

Just Replace Shoaib Malik Please... And also Raza Hassan I think the kid needs more experience, but yeah shoaib malik is horrible. its a joke really.

Replace for Hammad azam and maybe Anwar Ali..

  • on September 12, 2012, 7:31 GMT

I think Afridi should bat on No 3 in world cup as Muhammad Hafeez should bat on no 7 after Umar Akmal. Imran Nazir and Nasir should open

With 19 for 5 at one point, Professor, how can the players have a happy feeling?Because they are used to see that for the last 5-6 years. You need to be sorry for that type of poor performance. Happy for the series with a super over( a tie in score)? Ausis played in the adverse weather condition, so they did better in my opinion.

Even right decisions at the right time can go wrong - not to worry. As a note: Pakistan is finally putting up good opening stands. There again, it wld be great in a test or even an ODI. But with number of batters at hand in this version, it is really a matter of eat and run. It seems Australinas in last two games took their chances and prevailed.

this tells a lot about Pakistan cricket - one day they can decimate anyone while other day they can not even win against Afghanistan! btw..watch out for Afghanistan this time, they can do wonders..and even Ireland! hmm..Afghanistan is playing at WT20, am I correct??

  • on September 11, 2012, 18:58 GMT

  • sirvivfan on September 11, 2012, 18:45 GMT

Should have won 3-0. How can the spirits be high after a dipterous final game. These guys are not capable of putting a winning run together. This is because they rely on their bowling to win all formats of matches. Also the batters rarely bat well under pressure. In a tournament situation at some stage they will have to chase a large score and if it is in the knock out stage they will exit! Also selection is an issue guys like Malik have been under performing for last 6 years and he is in the side. Good luck, nut I don't have much hope?

  • GTA_CricFan on September 11, 2012, 18:01 GMT

For some reason, it always feels as though Pakistan never learns from its mistakes. It also appears as though Pakistan team could care less about the mistakes from the sort of comments you hear from the captain and the rest.

I fail to understand why there's a "happy feeling within the camp" after a crushing defeat. It shouldn't just be about winning the series. It should be about performing well consistently, which has always been the problem.

  • Nadeem1976 on September 11, 2012, 17:56 GMT

i am happy that we won the series and don't care about last dead rubber match. it was like a exhibition match to me. Let's hope Pakistan play well in WC and give a tough time to other teams. Really enjoyed the second T2020 match. Still feeling the joy of that win. Amazing.

  • salarsikandar on September 11, 2012, 17:22 GMT

@MitenD i guess Malik is playing as a fielder lols. On the serious note we have done the same with Fawad Alam in 2009 T20 WC

  • on September 11, 2012, 17:21 GMT

I saw his approach during the 3rd match in which he asked Imran Nazir to play calmly and slowly... Why didn't he give the free license to his hard hitting batsman ? Is that the momentum he will take to Srilanka? It seems he is over confident. If u dont allow Imran Nazir to play his natural game then wat the hell momemtum u r carrying with u. he should be given full licence, if he plays his natural game then only he & his team will be successfull.. PLZ THINK ABOUT THIS. I HOPE THIS MSG IS FORWARDED TO THE CONCERNED PERSON OF THE PAKISTANI TEAM

  • Desihungama on September 11, 2012, 17:04 GMT

You play like this and you will be out of the tournament in first week. I see no chance of Pakistan making to Super 8. They are mentally weak and unable to read a situation. Just bowling alone can only get you so far. Australia will surprise everyone and lift the trophy with Sri Lanka second favorites.

  • abdullahiqbal on September 11, 2012, 16:30 GMT

iam happey to pakistan won the seriers but all top 10 team is best for T20 they shoulde work hard for worldcup to win but it is not easy go pak go go ...

  • MitenD on September 11, 2012, 15:45 GMT

Such a dangerous side when the batting clicks. The bowling unit is the best in the world in subcontinent conditions. Shoaib Malik looks completely out of sorts as a batsman. And if he isn't bowling at all, why is he in the side?!

  • on September 11, 2012, 15:18 GMT

Hafeez shouldn't be making these comments - I see his approach during the 3rd match in which he asked Imran Nazir to play calmly and slowly... Why didn't he give the free license to his hard hitting batsman ? Is that the momentum he will take to Srilanka? It seems he is over confident !

yes its always been . a series win is a win. but nned to rectify 3rd game's mistakes. dont do too much experimenting . and use ajmal sensibly. ajmal need suuport. problem for pak. their batting order, and also imran nazir & malik again showing that they are now only league players. batting of razak & afridi also has question marks. malik/afridi/razak/imran nazir not performing much in all previous games.i think 1 of malik or nazir should give way to another middle order batsman. in squad only asad left so get him in.

  • ejsiddiqui on September 11, 2012, 13:56 GMT

I don't give too much to last defeat. It seems from the start of the match that Hafeez was wanted to test and give chance to everyone. Thats why he did not bowled himself earlier.

its good to see the spirits are high even after a crushing defeat but pakistan must learn there lesson rectify the mistakes and be ready to take on any tean in the world cup
