A seam bowling allrounder from Plymouth, Lewis Gregory finished the 2014 season as one of the most improved players in county cricket. While his talent had never been in doubt - Gregory developed through the Devon age-group teams (primarily as a batsman) and is a former captain of England U19 - in 2014 Gregory started to produce consistently impressive performances with the ball and, despite injury limiting him to nine Championship games, he claimed 43 wickets at 26.06 apiece as well as averaging a fraction below 30 with the bat. Highlights included an 11-wicket match against Northants and slamming a 70-ball century against Durham in a List A game.
His debut came against Pakistan in 2010 and he played most of the Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign the following season, taking 13 wickets at just 14.92. In 2011 he also made his first-class debut, against Worcestershire at Taunton, but he failed to kick on in 2012, although he did play a full part in the CB40 and took four wickets in the FLt20 quarter-final against Essex. 2013 saw him play six first-class matches, taking 14 wickets at 25.57, including what was then a career-best 5 for 38 against Middlesex at Lord's.
While he might not quite have the pace to make it at the very highest level, Gregory has the talent and character to suggest he is one of the clutch of young players around which Somerset can rebuild.
