England tour of United Arab Emirates, 2nd ODI: England v Pakistan at Abu Dhabi, Feb 15, 2012
England won by 20 runs
Played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi (neutral venue)
15 February 2012 - day/night match (50-over match)

Morning/afternoon all. England and Pakistan are applying their deep heat and sun cream (to different areas) in preparation for the second ODI in Abu Dhabi. Why don't we do the same? I'm Alan Gardner and I'll be joined later on by the redoubtable Alex Winter.

After England's miracle in the desert on Monday, can they repeat the trick and take a grip on the series? Or will that Alastair Cook and Steve Finn inspired win prove, as my colleague Andrew McGlashan suggests, to have been just a mirage? You'll doubtless find enlightenment in David Hopps' preview.

The latest news is that England have won the toss and will bat. They are unchanged, despite suggestions that Danny Briggs may have won a first cap. Pakistan make three switches, with Azhar Ali in for Asad Shafiq, Abdur Rehman in place of Shoaib Malik and Aizaz Cheema replacing Wahab Riaz.

Pakistan 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Azhar Ali, 4 Younis Khan, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Umar Akmal (wk) 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Abdur Rehman, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema

England 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Kevin Pietersen, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ravi Bopara, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 7 Samit Patel, 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson 11 Steven Finn

So, we have a repeat scenario from the first match, with England looking to set a target and then let their quicks take advantage of the evening dew. Misbah-ul-Haq has admitted that batting first is a significant factor - though this pitch is expected to be more receptive to spin. Given that only Cook and Ravi Bopara showed any application on Monday, and England lost all seven wickets to spin, that could be significant.

Easy jokes department: Samit Patel is hungry for success. And for a more comprehensive take on the teams, here's Andrew McGlashan's toss report (that's not a description, by the way).

Right, here we go. It'll be Umar Gul to open the bowling for Pakistan ...

0.1

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, length, on middle and off, inside-edged on to his pad and towards square leg. Gul liked that

0.2

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, and he'll like that even more, beating Cook's prod outside off with a delivery that drifted away late

0.3

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, length ball, outside off but swinging back. Cook leaves ... definitely some movement out there for the bowler

0.4

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, quicker, defended off the back foot out towards cover-point

0.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, good line, this, from Gul, with Cook playing straight back to the bowler

0.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, angled across again and Cook scissors the bat down, the ball squirting away into the off side

A maiden for Gul, then. Not that Cook is unfamiliar with those ...

End of over 1 (maiden) England 0/0 (RR: 0.00)

    • AN Cook 0 (6b)
    • KP Pietersen 0 (0b)
    • Umar Gul 1-1-0-0

Here's Aizaz Cheema from the other end ...

1.1

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, wide, swinging further away and Pietersen plays no stroke. Lucky not to be called wide, that

1.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 1 wide, no let-off this time, way outside off and called

1.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 5 wides, boomerangs down the leg side this time, beaten Pietersen's attempted glance, and the keeper's dive, to run all the way to the boundary

1.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 1 wide, again an off-side wide - has Cheema got the yips?

1.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, better, still room outside off but at least Pietersen can reach it, stepping across to pat the ball back down the wicket

1.3

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen advances again and punches a check drive towards mid-off. KP loves a quick single to get off the mark, doesn't he?

1.4

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, decent length, slanted across the left-hander and Cook shoulders arms

1.5

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, room for Cook to cut but he fails to cash in, chopping the shot into the ground. Maybe tucked up slightly but looked like there should have been runs

1.6

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, wide, slightly short and again cracked into the ground as Cook tries to belt the leather off it. Definitely missed out there

Not the most sparkling of starts from Cheema. Reckon we might see a spinner sooner rather than later.

End of over 2 (8 runs) England 8/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • AN Cook 0 (9b)
    • KP Pietersen 1 (3b)
    • Aizaz Cheema 1-0-8-0
    • Umar Gul 1-1-0-0
2.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, length, outside off and defended on the walk

2.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, taken on the rise from outside off, clipped straight to the man at midwicket

2.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, tight line, played straight back to the bowler

2.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, a beauty from Gul, tempting the batsman forward before seaming back through the gate as Pietersen attempts a loose drive away from his body

2.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, on the stumps, flicked off the pads with aplomb down to long leg

2.6

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, lenght, outside off and pushed into the covers

Gul has started well and extras are still the top scorer so far ...

End of over 3 (4 runs) England 12/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • KP Pietersen 5 (9b 1x4)
    • AN Cook 0 (9b)
    • Umar Gul 2-1-4-0
    • Aizaz Cheema 1-0-8-0
3.1

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, FOUR, not a bad ball but there's a bit of room outside off and Cook has time to size it up and punch a back-foot drive between mid-off and cover

3.2

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, straighter line and turned to leg

3.3

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, length, on the stumps, back-foot defensive

3.4

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, angled across, pushed out towards point

3.5

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, a bit fuller, Cook tries to drive but the bat turns in his hands and mid-off comes round to field

3.6

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, overpitched on leg stump but Cook's wristy clip flies straight along the ground to the man at midwicket.

End of over 4 (4 runs) England 16/0 (RR: 4.00)

    • AN Cook 4 (15b 1x4)
    • KP Pietersen 5 (9b 1x4)
    • Aizaz Cheema 2-0-12-0
    • Umar Gul 2-1-4-0

England's openers haven't quite settled yet. This is a much more familiar state of affairs ...

4.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, on the stumps, turned to square leg, run hard

4.2

Umar Gul to Cook, 2 runs, full length, placed between midwicket and mid-off - well timed

4.3

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, good length from Gul, not quite short enough to pull and Cook misses with a full-blooded attempt

4.4

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, bit more width but well stopped at cover after a powerful drive

4.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, back of a length, beaten fishing outside off

4.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, angled across, pushed out to cover

End of over 5 (3 runs) England 19/0 (RR: 3.80)

    • AN Cook 6 (20b 1x4)
    • KP Pietersen 6 (10b 1x4)
    • Umar Gul 3-1-7-0
    • Aizaz Cheema 2-0-12-0

"Little surprised Hafeez didn't open the bowling," says James. Aren't we all, but here he is, looking like a 50s movie star ...

5.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Pietersen, 1 run, on the stumps, Pietersen advances and hits down the ground to long-on. There's a slip and a leg slip in place for KP

For the second time in two balls, Hafeez loses his run up ...

5.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, no run, flat, on off with not much turn, driven to cover

5.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, no run, tossed up more and Cook tries to force the pace again but misses with an airy drive

5.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, FOUR, much better from the batsman, stepping out to steer a straighter delivery between midwicket and mid-on, who is well beaten in the chase to the boundary

5.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, 1 run, length, pushed towards long-on

5.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Pietersen, no run, flatter, quicker and checked back to the bowler by the advancing Pietersen

End of over 6 (6 runs) England 25/0 (RR: 4.16)

    • KP Pietersen 7 (12b 1x4)
    • AN Cook 11 (24b 2x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 1-0-6-0
    • Umar Gul 3-1-7-0
6.1

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, back of a length, room to cut and Azhar Ali makes a superb diving stop, coming across from cover. Just the kind of thing a bowler likes to see from his team-mates

6.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, length ball, played back down the wicket with a straight (well, for Pietersen) bat

6.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, slightly full and whipped away with a swing of those stong forearms ... however, it's straight at midwicket and he attempts to throw down the stumps. Pietersen makes his ground

6.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, targeting the batsman's body, dropped into the on side

6.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, on the walk again, taking a length delivery from outside off and clipping to backward square. Pietersen trying to disrupt Gul's line here

6.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, chopped off the back foot towards point by the somewhat-becalmed captain

Speaking of whom ... "Looks like Cook will take is average past KP today," suggests Phil Johnson. "How much longer before he gets his SR above him as well. Wonder if his place in the side will still be questioned then." Few can doubt Cook at the moment. I bet he even makes mean scrambled eggs ...

End of over 7 (2 runs) England 27/0 (RR: 3.85)

    • AN Cook 12 (26b 2x4)
    • KP Pietersen 8 (16b 1x4)
    • Umar Gul 4-1-9-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 1-0-6-0
7.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Pietersen, 1 run, flat, straight, driven down the ground

7.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, no run, fuller, Cook can't get the ball away past the infield

7.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, no run, on the pads, turned to midwicket

7.4

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, no run, tossed up and Cook miscues back to the bowler on the bounce

7.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, FOUR, nails it this time, picking up the ball on leg and lofting it to the deep midwicket boundary. Lovely timing

7.6

Mohammad Hafeez to Cook, FOUR, room outside off to drive and Cook again punishes Hafeez with an immaculate drive

End of over 8 (9 runs) England 36/0 (RR: 4.50)

    • AN Cook 20 (31b 4x4)
    • KP Pietersen 9 (17b 1x4)
    • Mohammad Hafeez 2-0-15-0
    • Umar Gul 4-1-9-0

You know, I think Cook could scramble eggs with one hand while playing cover drives with the other ...

8.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, short of a length, popped back down on to the wicket on the back foot

8.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, wide and slashed over cover - not quite timed but hit hard enough to fly to the rope. Gul holds his head but it wasn't really a chance

8.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, another one! On the stumps but overpitched and Pietersen times it down the ground. Two real confidence boosting strokes

8.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, short, prodded into the off side

8.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, angled in off a good length, slightly miscued pull to short leg

8.6

Umar Gul to Cook, 3 runs, lovely timing again from Cook, showing the virtues of orthodox shot-making. Gul gives him some room outside off - and there's no swing now - Cook driving off the back foot past in front of cover

The England ODI juggernaut has juddered into life again. Expect we'll see Afridi soon ...

End of over 9 (12 runs) England 48/0 (RR: 5.33)

    • AN Cook 23 (32b 4x4)
    • KP Pietersen 18 (22b 3x4)
    • Umar Gul 5-1-21-0
    • Mohammad Hafeez 2-0-15-0

Well, here's Abdur Rehman, bringing the spin menace ...

9.1

Abdur Rehman to Cook, no run, outside off, squirted to point

9.2

Abdur Rehman to Cook, no run, on the stumps, turned to square leg

9.3

Abdur Rehman to Cook, no run, flighted, Cook sweeps aggresively but can't beat the fielder

9.4

Abdur Rehman to Cook, 1 run, tossed up again and turned into the gap in front of square

KP, meet left-arm spinner. Left-arm spinner, meet KP

9.5

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, wicket to wicket, almost, defended with a bit stride

9.6

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, tossed towards leg stump and prodded to short midwicket

Here's Mike Holmes on KP: "Stats tell only one side of the story. Pietersen is the most exciting batsman I have seen since the great Viv." Have you never watched Luke Wright, Mike?

End of over 10 (1 run) England 49/0 (RR: 4.90)

    • KP Pietersen 18 (24b 3x4)
    • AN Cook 24 (36b 4x4)
    • Abdur Rehman 1-0-1-0
    • Umar Gul 5-1-21-0

Ah ha ... Here comes Shahid Afridi. Leg break, leg break, leg break ...

10.1

Shahid Afridi to Cook, no run, Flat, quick, left outside off

10.2

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, tossed up and room to cut hard into the off side

That's a second consecutive 50-run opening partnership for these two

10.3

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, on the stumps, defended back

10.4

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, flatter, rolled out with the wrist, pushed into the leg side

10.5

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, again quick and targeting the stumps, Pietersen a little tentative in defence

10.6

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, defended but with the bat angling down. Afridi's looking for the ball to grip a little, like the one that dismissed Pietersen last time. Hasn't found it yet though

End of over 11 (1 run) England 50/0 (RR: 4.54)

    • KP Pietersen 18 (28b 3x4)
    • AN Cook 25 (38b 4x4)

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, FOUR, lovely shot, skipping out and picking up Rehman on leg stump to chip the ball into the gap where the fielder previously was

11.4

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, 2 leg byes, flatter, deflected off the pad behind square

11.5

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, on the stumps, Pietersen gets a good stride in and pushes to cover

11.6

End of over 12 (8 runs) England 58/0 (RR: 4.83)

    • KP Pietersen 23 (32b 4x4)
    • AN Cook 26 (40b 4x4)
    • Abdur Rehman 2-0-7-0
    • Shahid Afridi 1-0-1-0

Ali is getting worried: "That awkward feeling of déjà vu for Team Pakistan. England winning the toss, electing to bat first and propelling towards another daunting opening partnership... 2-0 for England today."

12.1

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, struck on the pad, lunging half forward - Pakistan go for the review. This could be gone ... Pietersen will only be saved if he's got outside off, or if it's slipping down leg. May have been bat first, also ... Hawk Eye shows the ball only clipping leg and it stays with the umpire's call. KP lives

12.2

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, given a little air, defended on the stumps

12.3

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, another excited appeal from Afridi! Pietersen was struck on the knee roll with the bat not even in the same post code, the ball running to midwicket

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, straight, flat, no turn but Pietersen can't get him away

13.4

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, quicker ball and Pietersen prods away from his body to gully

13.5

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, on off and defended

13.6

Abdur Rehman to Pietersen, no run, maintains that good line and length, Pietersen can't forward, defends into the off side

End of over 14 (3 runs) England 61/0 (RR: 4.35)

    • KP Pietersen 24 (42b 4x4)
    • AN Cook 28 (42b 4x4)
    • Abdur Rehman 3-0-10-0
    • Shahid Afridi 2-1-1-0

The spinners are just beginning to strangle England here ...

14.1

Shahid Afridi to Cook, no run, edged but bounces straight out of Umar Akmal's iron gloves! It was quick, room outside off to cut and just a slight deflection - should have been taken

14.2

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 2 runs, straighter, turned into the legside

14.3

Shahid Afridi to Cook, no run, attempts to cut again and misses

14.6

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, 1 run, on the stumps again and Pietersen strides out to clip down the ground

End of over 15 (4 runs) England 65/0 (RR: 4.33)

    • KP Pietersen 25 (44b 4x4)
    • AN Cook 31 (46b 4x4)
    • Shahid Afridi 3-1-5-0
    • Abdur Rehman 3-0-10-0

Kazim thinks Pakistan need more from their fast bowlers. "Pakistan have an outstanding spin attack but they lack in the fast bowling department. Spinner are not effective start and end of the innings. They need good quickies, unlike Cheema or Junaid."

Well, you'll have to settle with a spell from Saeed Ajmal for now, Kazim. And the bowling Powerplay has been taken ...

15.1

Saeed Ajmal to Pietersen, 1 run, tossed up and Pietersen steps out, mishitting a lofted drive that falls some way short of long-on, who wasn't all the way back to begin with

15.2

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, flatter, given a bit of a rip but drifting on to Cook's legs, tickled away square

15.3

Saeed Ajmal to Pietersen, OUT, he's gone! Half forward, playing around a straight one - it was the offspinner, but there wasn't much turn and Pietersen went down the Bakerloo (translation: the wrong line). Even he can't bring himself to review that ... Actually, I tell a lie, there was quite a bit of turn there.

KP Pietersen lbw b Saeed Ajmal 26 (66m 46b 4x4 0x6) SR: 56.52

Forget the back-up seamer - Pakistan should just field four spinners. England's batsmen remain bewitched

And with that dismissal, they'll take drinks

15.4

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, given some air and driven towards point

15.5

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 2 runs, shuffling across the flicked out towards deep backward square

15.6

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, flighted on the stumps and Trott gets forward to smother it

End of over 16 (4 runs) England 69/1 (RR: 4.31)

    • IJL Trott 2 (3b)
    • AN Cook 32 (47b 4x4)
    • Saeed Ajmal 1-0-4-1
    • Shahid Afridi 3-1-5-0

Spinners at both ends and Cook and Trott in the middle. What I think is referred to as a "tinder box" situation ...

16.1

Shahid Afridi to Cook, FOUR, sliding across the batsman and again crashed to the square boundary. Superb placement, Cook looking in ominously good touch again

16.2

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, cut away again to deep backward point

16.3

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, looped up on leg and defended back down the wicket

16.4

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, checked the ball back to the bowler from outside off

16.5

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, bit of room, driven off the back foot into the covers

16.6

Shahid Afridi to Cook, no run, full, on the stumps and Cook leans over to defend carefully, deliberately

End of over 17 (6 runs) England 75/1 (RR: 4.41)

    • AN Cook 37 (50b 5x4)
    • IJL Trott 3 (6b)
    • Shahid Afridi 4-1-11-0

Honours even at this stage? You've got to add a couple of wickets to England's score, I reckon, with the spinners on

17.1

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, tossed up and defended on the stumps

17.2

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, similar delivery, again played back

17.3

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, FOUR, dragged shorter, across the batsman, whose eyes bloom wide, chopping a cut shot away to the rope

17.4

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, knocked back past the bowler to long-on

17.5

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, full, on middle and off, defended to midwicket

17.6

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, quicker, on off stump and defended on the front foot

End of over 18 (5 runs) England 80/1 (RR: 4.44)

18.3

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, shorter, on leg stump and shovelled away

18.5

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, played on the front foot, driven through midwicket

18.6

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, outside off, picked up quickly and defended

End of over 19 (5 runs) England 85/1 (RR: 4.47)

"Afridi's over started and then i had a phone call in the office, i answered the phone & spoke about 1 minute & when i hanged up, Afridi's over was done. Isn't that a bit too fast?" I know what you mean, I didn't see it either - and I had to describe it.

19.1

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, tossed up, on drive through the infield

19.2

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, full, on off stump, smothered

19.3

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, maintains that line but this time Cook gets him away past mid-off

19.4

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, flighted up, watchfully defended

19.5

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, no run, drifts on to leg and prodded to the man in the midwicket area

19.6

Saeed Ajmal to Trott, 1 run, again leg side and turned to deep backward square

These two are rotating the strike quite well ... which inevitably means they'll both get out in a minute

End of over 20 (3 runs) England 88/1 (RR: 4.40)

    • IJL Trott 13 (17b 1x4)
    • AN Cook 40 (57b 5x4)

20.4

Shahid Afridi to Trott, no run, flat on leg stump and blocked

20.5

Shahid Afridi to Trott, 1 run, short and pulled but only as far as deep square leg, missed out did Trott

20.6

Shahid Afridi to Cook, 1 run, leg stump, more air, and nudged through square leg

End of over 21 (4 runs) England 92/1 (RR: 4.38)

I think Nasser's got a point, just because it's one-day cricket doesn't mean the field should all go out to give England easy runs. In the Tests the pressure of not being able to score was a major factor in England's collapses...

Hello again. England are looking very serene - but you can never bet against a Hitchcock twist. Everyone being nice and polite and well spoken, then BAM!, somebody's been skewered.

Still, if the devil is in the evening dew again, the tourists are looking well set. Ah, and here comes the bowling Powerplay - and Saeed Ajmal - to put the cat among the apple carts ...

35.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, on leg, turned squared off the hips

35.2

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, good length, outside off, played with the turn to short third man

35.3

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 2 runs, drifting in, nurdled away off the back foot towards deep midwicket and the batsmen run hard for two

Afridi, trotting out to long-off, is called back by Umar as Ajmal is in his stride - there would have been more than four outside the circle, making the delivery a no ball

35.4

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, tickled into the leg side, where there is a man back

35.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, on the stumps but nudged softly to short midwicket

35.6

    • Mohammad Hafeez 4-0-24-0

The question, really, is whether England can raise their tempo from here. You feel that if that step on the gas they're just as likely to drive straight into a fire hydrant as accelerate into the distance ...

Here's Umar Gul with his bumper bag or yorkers

36.1

Umar Gul to Bopara, 3 runs, on middle and leg, sweetly timed into the gap between deep square leg and wide long-on. Well fielded on the boundary, with a textbook slide and flip to a team-mate

36.2

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, fullish, pushed down the ground to long-on

36.3

Umar Gul to Bopara, FOUR, wide on the crease, wide in the delivery and slapped derisively through point. One or two imprecations from Gul, there, but he only has himself to blame

36.4

Umar Gul to Bopara, 1 run, length, on the stumps, ushered down to long-on

36.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, full and wide, slapped hard to point where it's well fielded and quickly returned

36.6

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, a slower yorker, picked up slightly late by Cook but he gets his bat down on it. Thought he was going to be castled there!

End of over 37 (9 runs) England 168/2 (RR: 4.54)

37.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, cotinuing around the wicket, patted into the leg side ... Bopara drops his bat as he grounds it but there's no danger

37.2

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, FOUR, a false stroke but it brings the England captain four. He was reaching forward, beaten by the spin and a thickish edge scurried away fine to third man

37.3

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, flighted up, on off but turned round the corner to square leg - expert placement from Cook

37.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, length, nurdled square and there's no man to prevent the quick single

37.5

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, pitching outside off, punched to cover

The wheels haven't fallen off so far in this Powerplay, which is pretty much the definition of success, as far as England are concerned

End of over 38 (7 runs) England 175/2 (RR: 4.60)

Umar Gul to Bopara, 1 run, full, deflected down to third man

38.4

Umar Gul to Cook, FOUR, bosh! That's a confident stroke, taking a full, straight delivery and short-arm jabbing it over midwicket, where it bounces along merrily to the boundary

38.5

Umar Gul to Cook, 2 runs, drops short and Cook rocks back, whipping a flat pull shot out towards deep backward square, who has to come round and field on the slide

38.6

Umar Gul to Cook, FOUR, full again from Gul but cook angles the face of the bat and rattles a drive to the boundary behind point. He's batting like a luxury saloon right now, a silky smooth ride

39.3

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, dragged a touch short, thick edged to short third man ... that's enough for them to get through for the single and bring up Cook's second hundred in succession!

Not a one-day player, though, is he?

39.4

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, no run, beaten outside off by a full, flighted delivery

39.5

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, on leg, pushed to mid-on who tries to catch Cook out backing up - but ends of conceding an overthrow

40.4

Shahid Afridi to Cook, OUT, gone! Afridi held that one back a bit and Cook was a little early on the shot, lobbing the ball off the face straight back to the bowler. Still, that's another captain's knock and he's left England very well set

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 2 runs, yes, I think so. There's that exaggerated press again, and he tees off down the ground. It's mishit but long-on has to come in and the throw is poor

45.6

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, no run, good response from Cheema, fizzing it in full and slightly wide, Morgan thunking his drive into the ground

End of over 46 (6 runs) England 221/3 (RR: 4.80)

    • EJG Morgan 11 (20b)
    • RS Bopara 45 (51b 3x4)
    • Aizaz Cheema 7-0-37-1
    • Shahid Afridi 10-1-38-1

With wickets in hand, these two should really be throwing the bat around a bit. I know, not very English ... Here's Ajmal again

46.1

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, on the legs, swept hard square

46.2

Morgan narrows his eyes. What's coming?

47.2

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 1 run, attempted slash through the off side but the ball was too full to get under

47.3

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, 1 leg bye, well outside off, Bopara changes his grip and tries to manufacture a paddle stroke ... the ball hits the pad, though, and trickles to short third man

47.4

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 1 run, full again, dug out to midwicket. Cheema's bowling an excellent length here

47.5

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, no run, and again, brilliantly bowled - a slightly wide yorker that Bopara, back in his crease, fails to get his bat on

47.6

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, 1 run, short this time and the hook is miscued but falls short of deep square leg - that's a second consecutive fifty for R-Bop

Pakistan have done an excellent containing job in the last few overs. But will containment turn out to be enough?

End of over 48 (5 runs) England 233/3 (RR: 4.85)

    • RS Bopara 50 (58b 3x4)
    • EJG Morgan 17 (25b)

Saeed Ajmal to Bopara, 1 run, on the legs and this time driven through extra cover

48.5

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, SIX, here we go! Down on one knee, Morgan carts Ajmal well over the deep midwicket boundary. Now, will that light the Irishman's fire?

48.6

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, quicker, chopped back to the bowler

Crunch time. Can you handle the crunch?

49.2

49.3

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 1 run, full-bunger again, wide of the left-hander, who squeezes it out to point

49.4

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, 2 runs, bumper, wide of off again and hoicked into the space behind midwicket, with deep square unable to get round

49.5

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, no run, an excellent delivery, taking the pace off and Bopara misses with a mighty heave. He yells in frustration and then dives to regain his crease from Umar's throw

49.6

Aizaz Cheema to Bopara, OUT, an almighty skier, which went pretty much straight up and down, with Umar coming in to take the catch above the stumps. Good comeback from Cheema, who started abysmally today but pulled Pakistan back into it with some excellent death bowling

RS Bopara c †Umar Akmal b Aizaz Cheema 58 (95m 66b 4x4 0x6) SR: 87.87

So, England finish on a round 250, thanks to another Cook century and a Bopara fifty. Are Pakistan's top order going to complete the mirror image by collapsing against the new ball? Or will England pay for a slightly conservative approach in the second half of the innings? Find out with Alex Winter in around 45 minutes' time ...

End of over 50 (8 runs) England 250/4

    • EJG Morgan 25 (29b 1x6)
    • Aizaz Cheema 9-0-49-2
