Pakistan v England ODI Series - 3rd ODI

England v Pakistan

England won by 9 wickets (with 76 balls remaining)

Hi all, Alan here, for all your Saturday afternoon run chase needs (Powerplay overs). Pakistan's score definitely looks below par but that doesn't mean England won't make a game of it. If they're going to win - and in doing so seal the series - I predict they'll take at least 299 balls of the legitimate 300 to come. Anyway, the teams are out and we are ready to offski once again. Here comes Umar Gul ...

0.1

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, Length ball, on leg stump, dropped short of square

0.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, wide on the crease, room for Pietersen to drive off the back foot - fielded at cover

0.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, on the stumps, angled in and patted down short on the on side

0.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, short, wide and scorched to the backward point boundary like a ball of potassium fizzing over the surface of a bowl of water

0.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, length ball, angled in and turned square by the advancing Pietersen

Some field changes being made, brought about by KP's simmering aggression. One of the two slips is moved out ... On the subject of Pietersen, here are some quotes from the big man about DRS. Sounds like he's bluffing, doesn't he?

0.6

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, back of length, bit of kick and Pietersen beaten past the outside edge. Enthusiastic appeal from Gul but don't think there was any bat on that

End of over 1 (5 runs) England 5/0 (218 runs required from 49 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 4.44)
KP Pietersen    4* (5b 1x4)      Umar Gul    1-0-5-0
AN Cook    1* (1b)

At the other end it will be Aizaz Cheema ...

1.1

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, pitching on leg, defended in his crease

1.2

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, 1 leg bye, outside leg but jerking across the left-hander, a bit of spit from the wicket means Cook wears the ball on his thigh - the batsman hurry through as the ball loops short of point

1.3

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, down the leg side, flicked off the pad on its was through as Pietersen misses with a glance

1.4

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, straighter, defended on the walk back to the bowler

1.5

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, short of a length, on off, prodded into the leg side

1.6

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 2 runs, poor ball, on Pietersen's legs and he clips Cheema away between mid-on and mid-wicket

Looks in far better touch today, does Pietersen (from an admittedly small sample). Perhaps he really is in "fantastic" form after all ...

End of over 2 (3 runs) England 8/0 (215 runs required from 48 overs, RR: 4.00, RRR: 4.47)
KP Pietersen    6* (9b 1x4)      Aizaz Cheema    1-0-2-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, length, on the batsman's body, knocked gently into the on side

2.2

Umar Gul to Cook, FOUR, back of a length, wide of off and Cook is quickly into position to whip his forearms through a powerful cut shot

2.3

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, straighter, defended back to the bowler

2.4

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, length ball, too close to cut but Cook gets away with it, chopping past his stumps

2.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 2 runs, drops short, hooked in front of deep square leg

2.6

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, length ball, driven off back foot to mid-on, where Afridi misfields to concede a single

KP Pietersen    9* (11b 1x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-13-0
AN Cook    6* (7b 1x4)      Aizaz Cheema    1-0-2-0

3.1

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 3 runs, touch short and Pietersen punches powerfully off his hips, beating the dive of the man at midwicket and finding a big open space in the outfield

3.2

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, no run, on the stumps, defended on the back foot

3.3

Aizaz Cheema to Cook, 1 run, short, angled across the left-hander, tickled towards midwicket

3.4

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, length, on the stumps, dropped to leg

3.5

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, FOUR, very short and wide and Pietersen catches the ball on the toe of the bat with a full-blooded swing. It loops high and not-very-handsome but has enough on it to get over wicketkeeper and slip before trundling on to the rope

3.6

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 1 leg bye, straight and full this time, comes off the pads

End of over 4 (9 runs) England 25/0 (198 runs required from 46 overs, RR: 6.25, RRR: 4.30)
KP Pietersen    16* (15b 2x4)      Aizaz Cheema    2-0-10-0
AN Cook    7* (9b 1x4)      Umar Gul    2-0-13-0

4.1

4.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 no ball, outside off and defended ... but Gul had overstepped. Free hit coming up

4.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, fuller length, outside off and Pietersen doesn't properly connect with a hook to midwicket

4.2

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 no ball, down the leg side - and he's overstepped again. Gul is all over the place at the moment, trying a wee bit too hard

Free hit for Cook this time ...

4.2

Umar Gul to Cook, (no ball) FOUR, goes for yorker length outside off but Cook gets down to the pitch and crashes through cover. And Gul has overstepped again!

4.2

Umar Gul to Cook, SIX, shot! That's the best of the lot! It was slightly back of a length but not too short ... Cook, however, danced back half a yard and KABOOMed a huge pull over deep midwicket!

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, he gets it right this time, outside off stump, and left

4.4

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, on the stumps, defended on the back foot

4.5

Umar Gul to Cook, no run, length, tight off-stump line and Cook again shoulders arms

4.6

End of over 5 (15 runs) England 40/0 (183 runs required from 45 overs, RR: 8.00, RRR: 4.06)
AN Cook    17* (16b 2x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    3-0-28-0
KP Pietersen    17* (17b 2x4)      Aizaz Cheema    2-0-10-0

End of over 6 (2 runs) England 42/0 (181 runs required from 44 overs, RR: 7.00, RRR: 4.11)
KP Pietersen    18* (19b 2x4)      Saeed Ajmal    1-0-2-0
AN Cook    18* (20b 2x4 1x6)      Umar Gul    3-0-28-0

This is useless from Pakistan, they are just letting the game drift out of sight, they have to make urgent changes to put England under some kind of pressure...they're listening to me cause Gul is back on...it's at least something...

24.1

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, length on leg stump and pushed out to deep midwicket

But you know need men up to really try and squeeze the batsman, no good letting singles flow...

24.2

Umar Gul to Pietersen, FOUR, long on is at least up but he's been beaten here by a lovely on-drive by Pietersen, wristily picked up off a full length and timed to perfection to the long on rope

24.3

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, driven again, this time off a more good length, wide of mid off, not timed well enough to get it past the fielder though

24.4

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 run, outside off, dropped into the covers and an easy run

24.5

Umar Gul to Pietersen, no run, short and Pietersen pulls and misses

24.6

25.4

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, steps back and cuts but only as far as extra cover

25.5

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, 1 run, tossed up outside off and Pietersen reaches for it and drives off a bottom edge to long on

25.6

Shahid Afridi to Cook, no run, Cook now stepping away to cut but can only find the fielder

End of over 26 (6 runs) England 155/0 (68 runs required from 24 overs, RR: 5.96, RRR: 2.83)

Ajmal returned and it needs more than magic for Pakistan from here...

26.3

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, 1 run, full and driven out to deep cover

26.5

Saeed Ajmal to Pietersen, 1 run, full and tucked off the front foot to deep midwicket

This at the moment is an absolute massacre, I wonder what England will do with the Powerplay...change of ends for Gul...

27.1

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, full and a lovely on drive, long on comes round to prevent four

27.2

Umar Gul to Cook, 1 no ball, back of a length and tucked to extra cover, another no-ball! Gul's had a stinker today

Free hit...

27.2

Umar Gul to Cook, FOUR, short and hammered to the midwicket fence, another great shot from Cook who's used the free hits today

Gul round the wicket...

28.1

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, no run, full and driven to the right of extra cover

28.2

Saeed Ajmal to Cook, OUT, oh out! Turn away from Cook takes a faint edge through to Akmal who takes a simple chance. A wicket from nowhere and it's a decent nut that ends Cook's stay 20 from a record third consecutive ODI hundred. He pressed forward to a length ball and nicked it to the keeper. Shame for Cook but can't affect this result

29.3

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, length and tucked into the leg side

29.5

Umar Gul to Morgan, no run, back of a length and tucked into the off side

29.6

Umar Gul to Morgan, 1 run, pushed to the right of mid off for a quick single

Drinks and as I say, this game will probably now just meander to a close, unless Pietersen gets annoyed of course, that could be fun...

End of over 30 (4 runs) England 174/1 (49 runs required from 20 overs, RR: 5.80, RRR: 2.45)
EJG Morgan    1* (8b)      Umar Gul    6-0-50-0
KP Pietersen    82* (78b 5x4 2x6)      Saeed Ajmal    8-1-28-1

30.1

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, length and defended into the off side

30.2

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, SIX, full and hammered over long on for six. A beautiful strike, so well timed and it sails over the fence

31.1

31.4

Umar Gul to Pietersen, 1 run, back foot drive just wide of mid off so KP keeps the strike

That's it from me for the day, see you on Tuesday for the fourth match, Monty's here to take you to the close and an England series win, and maybe (shhhhhh) a KP ton...

End of over 32 (9 runs) England 191/1 (32 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 5.96, RRR: 1.77)

EJG Morgan    9* (14b 1x6)      Saeed Ajmal    9-1-36-1

Hello again. Few picked England to be cruising to a 3-0 lead at this stage but, hey, no one ever expects the Spanish inquisition, do they?

32.1

Saeed Ajmal to Pietersen, 1 run, tossed up, sliced through cover off an outside edge

32.2

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, dropped! Thin edge from Morgan, who does a passable impression of both his brothers and shells it. Ajmal gives him a dead-eyed stare

32.3

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, on the stumps, defended

32.4

Saeed Ajmal to Morgan, no run, again blocked on off

32.5

EJG Morgan    10* (18b 1x6)      Umar Gul    7-0-59-0

England call for the batting Powerplay, which perhaps means they want to draw the curtains on this one. Aizaz Cheema will take the ball ...

33.1

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, no run, short, wide and rising, Morgan fails to connect with a wild slash

33.2

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, no run, better length and line, again beating the outside edge

33.3

33.4

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, no run, length, on the stumps, driven to mid-on

33.5

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 2 runs, drops short, flicked wristily to deep backward square

33.6

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, no run, length, on the stumps, defended into the on side where Cheema fields

A good over for Pakistan - but the horse has not only bolted, he's run off with the door dragging along behind him ...

End of over 34 (2 runs) England 197/1 (26 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 5.79, RRR: 1.62)
EJG Morgan    12* (24b 1x6)      Aizaz Cheema    5-0-28-0
KP Pietersen    94* (86b 7x4 2x6)      Saeed Ajmal    10-1-40-1

From the other end, it'll be Shahid Afridi ...

34.1

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, FOUR, looping, bouncing ball, landing on off and turning away ... too much room for Pietersen, who slaps a drive past extra-cover

34.2

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, on the stumps, jabbed away defensively on the back foot

34.3

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, no run, wide of off and turning further - left

34.4

Shahid Afridi to Pietersen, 1 run, tossed up, driven down the ground

34.5

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, googly, given some air, chopped into the ground towards point

34.6

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 1 run, short, leg side and swivel-pulled down to long leg

End of over 35 (6 runs) England 203/1 (20 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 5.80, RRR: 1.33)
EJG Morgan    13* (26b 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    7-0-41-0
KP Pietersen    99* (90b 8x4 2x6)      Aizaz Cheema    5-0-28-0

35.1

Aizaz Cheema to Morgan, 1 run, room to cut outside off stump and hit hard to third man, who fields and then falls over, as if a rug had been pulled from under his feet

Pietersen on 99, then ...

35.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, defended back down the wicket, Cheema fields and throws down the stumps - but KP is back in his crease

35.3

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, length, outside off, driven on the up to extra-cover

35.4

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 2 runs, touch short, Pietersen walks across and bunts it off his hips in familiar style - he's properly chuffed, and why not? He removes his helmet and displays that familiar roundhouse fistpump. That's his first ODI hundred in more than three years

35.5

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, FOUR, short, hammered down the ground on the back foot. Babe Ruth couldn't have hit that better

35.6

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, 1 run, well wide of off and clattered to deep backward square

So, you know earlier when I suggested Pietersen was bluffing in that interview about his form ... well, what I didn't say was that I was bluffing.

End of over 36 (8 runs) England 211/1 (12 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 5.86, RRR: 0.85)
KP Pietersen    106* (95b 9x4 2x6)      Aizaz Cheema    6-0-36-0

36.2

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, off-stump line, driven back

36.3

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, FOUR, looped up, a full toss really, and driven from under his nose through extra cover. England are almost there

36.4

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, no run, outside off, cut hard to the point fielder

36.5

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, 2 runs, turned off his legs this time, to deep backward square

36.6

Shahid Afridi to Morgan, FOUR, tossed up and humped back over Afridi's head to the boundary

Just one more'll do it ... And KP should now get the honour.

End of over 37 (11 runs) England 222/1 (1 run required from 13 overs, RR: 6.00, RRR: 0.07)
EJG Morgan    24* (32b 2x4 1x6)      Shahid Afridi    8-0-52-0
KP Pietersen    107* (96b 9x4 2x6)      Aizaz Cheema    6-0-36-0

37.1

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, no run, length, knocked to short midwicket

37.2

Aizaz Cheema to Pietersen, FOUR, room outside off to drive and Pietersen does so viciously ... it goes straight through the extra-cover fielder and all the way to the rope. So, that's how to win ODI cricket in Asia - simples

How do England spell victory? In this case E-M-P-H-A-T-I-C. A nine-wicket win puts the the tourists 3-0 up with one to play and secures a first series victory in Asian conditions since Sri Lanka in 2007 - and only England's third since 1987. And this performance, having lost the toss, has been the most impressive so far by Alastair Cook's men.

Right from the moment he lasered his third ball to the square boundary, Pietersen looked in the groove today. He was brutally dismissive all round the wicket to reach his first ton since Cuttack in 2008 - a day he also scored 111 not out. Cook, Finn and Stuart Broad can also feel pretty pleased with their performances, while Pakistan will rue another top-order collapse, which meant impressive innings from Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi were in vain.

Anyway, it's awards time - and the topline news is that Umar Gul hit the biggest six of the game. Oh, and Pietersen was Man of the Match.

Pietersen: "Most importantly we're 3-0 up, so it's a series win away from home. I said I was not getting luck, I was getting starts and getting out but with a little bit of fortune I made runs today. I suppose I was a bit more possitive this evening, looking to run at the ball, hit the ball. [On DRS] Definitely not, I start again on nought on Tuesday - it's a great leveller is cricket so I'm not going to say I've cracked it."

Misbah-ul-Haq: "Full credit to England, the way they are performing, their seamers are putting pressure on our batting line-up and restricting us - and it was a wonderful performance by their batsman. It was a good pitch but we kept on losing wickets - we were looking for 270-280. Cricket is all about pressure, when you feel pressure, things start to go wrong. We need to set better targets and give our bowlers a better chance."

Cook: "Again our bowlers were outstanding. To keep them to 220 on that wicket was a fantastic effort. Everyone contributed and 220 was quite a bit below par. [Expect to be 3-0 up?] You can always hope can't you? We didn't play well in the Test series but that doesn't make us bad players over night ... We've put in some really good performances and can take credit for that. Win or lose, you work hard as a team. We kept our chins up through the Test series and stuck to our guns and got the results."

Anyway, that's it from me and Alex. Can England secure a tit-for-tat whitewash from out of leftfield? Join us to find out on Tuesday. Cheerio!
