Pakistan v England ODI Series - 3rd ODI

England v Pakistan

England won by 9 wickets (with 76 balls remaining)

Morning chaps, women and other beings that don't associate themselves into those two categories - very inclusive we are here at ESPNcricinfo. I'm Alex Winter and alongside me today, fresh out of court (covering the Mervyn Westfield trial might I quickly add) will be Alan "Monty" Gardner. Third ODI today between Pakistan and England, can the British wrap up the series with a game to spare? We're back in the vast bowl that is Dubai today and the action gets underway at 11am GMT with news of the teams and the toss coming up shortly...

In the interim you can read all the reaction to Westfield being sentenced to four months in prison for spot-fixing. A sad, yet somewhat satisfying outcome...

Toss news: Pakistan won it, much to Misbah-ul-haq's delight - he immediately chose to bat. Pakistan will be without their other middle order veteran, however, with Younis Khan unwell. Asad Shafiq comes in at No. 4, while Abdur Rehman is replaced by Adnan Akmal, as Pakistan decide a proper wicket-keeper might be a good thing after all.

England, meanwhile, are once again unchanged. Here's David Hopps' report.

Here we go then ...

0.1

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, back of a length, outside off and cut hard wide of third man

0.2

Anderson to Imran Farhat, 4 leg byes, misdirected on to the legs and flicked nonchalently down to long leg

0.3

Anderson to Imran Farhat, no run, length ball, angled across and swinging away a touch, left by Farhat

0.4

Anderson to Imran Farhat, no run, shorter, banged in and defended back down the wicket

0.5

Anderson to Imran Farhat, 1 run, back of a length again, cut off the back foot - in the air for a while - through gully

0.6

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 3 runs, wide outside off, cut hard but well fielded just in front of the rope by Bopara

And just like that, Pakistan are up and running.

End of over 1 (9 runs) Pakistan 9/0 (RR: 9.00)
Mohammad Hafeez    4* (2b)      JM Anderson    1-0-5-0
Imran Farhat    1* (4b)

With the other new ball, at the other end, it's Steven "Wrecking Ball" Finn ...

1.1

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length, outside off, left by Hafeez

1.2

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, similar ball, outside off and left alone

1.3

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, in the corridor, again ignored by Hafeez

1.4

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, pitched up a little more, Hafeez down on one knee ... shoulders arms

There's definitely a more cautious approach to facing Finn after his exploits in the first two ODIs ... Understandably

1.5

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, directed at the batsman's body, dropped to short midwicket between two fielders

1.6

Finn to Imran Farhat, no run, good length, angled across and beats a loose drive

End of over 2 (1 run) Pakistan 10/0 (RR: 5.00)
Imran Farhat    1* (5b)      ST Finn    1-0-1-0
Mohammad Hafeez    5* (7b)      JM Anderson    1-0-5-0

2.1

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a beauty! Much better from Anderson, tempting length outside off, Hafeez plays back but is beaten pas the outside edge by just a smidge of away movement

2.2

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, shorter, on off, pushed towards cover

2.3

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, on the stumps, slightly back of a length and patted down into the leg side for a quickly run single

2.4

Anderson to Imran Farhat, no run, on the stumps, forward defensive from Farhat

2.5

Anderson to Imran Farhat, FOUR, legside line again as Anderson loses his radar to the left-hander - flicked away to the long-leg boundary

2.6

Anderson to Imran Farhat, FOUR, and again! Anderson grimaces as another misdirected delivery is clouted off Farhat's legs, beating the despairing dive of Pietersen at fine leg

End of over 3 (9 runs) Pakistan 19/0 (RR: 6.33)
Imran Farhat    9* (8b 2x4)      JM Anderson    2-0-14-0
Mohammad Hafeez    6* (10b)      ST Finn    1-0-1-0

3.1

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, room outside off to drive through extra cover for a couple

3.2

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, on the stumps, tickled fine off the pads

3.3

Finn to Imran Farhat, no run, good line and length, angled across before fizzing through to the keeper

3.4

Finn to Imran Farhat, OUT, and this time too good for him! Farhat played way from his body and feathered a nick through to the wicketkeeper. He needn't have played at the delivery, really, as it was full and a little wider than the one before but he was drawn forward and dangled his bat with disastrous consequences ...

Imran Farhat c †Kieswetter b Finn 9 (15m 10b 2x4 0x6) SR: 90.00

3.5

Finn to Azhar Ali, 2 runs, taken from off stump and clipped towards square leg

3.6

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, fullish length, outside off and left

So, another wicket for Steve Finn. Surprised?

End of over 4 (5 runs) Pakistan 24/1 (RR: 6.00)

4.2

Anderson to Azhar Ali, no run, length ball, outside off, touch of swing, left alone

4.3

Anderson to Azhar Ali, 1 run, banged in a little shorter and at the body, helped off towards fine leg

4.4

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, on middle and off but swinging back further, thunking into Azhar's thigh guard

4.5

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length ball, defended square into the off side

4.6

Anderson to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, drops short, wide and slapped hard to deep backward point where Pietersen makes a solid diving stop this time

End of over 5 (4 runs) Pakistan 28/1 (RR: 5.60)
Mohammad Hafeez    12* (16b)      JM Anderson    3-0-18-0

5.1

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, off-stump line and defended with the full face of the bat

5.2

Finn to Azhar Ali, 1 wide, wanged down the leg side, Azhar missing with an attemped glance as he edged across his stump

5.2

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, length, outside off and left, the bat lifted high in the air

5.3

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, off-stump line, defended on the front foot by Azhar

5.4

Finn to Azhar Ali, 1 run, on the stumps, dropped towards midwicket from where the throw comes in - but not quite quickly enough as the bails are broken, Azhar making his ground safely enough

5.5

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, outside off, defended hard square to point

5.6

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, length ball, outside off and deflected down to third man

End of over 6 (3 runs) Pakistan 31/1 (RR: 5.16)

Time for Stuart Broad to flex his shoulders

6.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, short, wide loosener, cut lustily on the up away to the deep point boundary

6.2

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, plenty of width again, no stroke ... lucky not to be called wide

6.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 no ball, he's out! But no, it's called a no-ball! Another roomy delivery was cut hard but straight at Eoin Morgan, fielding at point. But Broad had ever-so-slightly overstepped and the wicket is scrubbed off!

Here comes Azhar's free hit ...

6.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, hammered over the cover region, down on one knee, as Hafeez adds insult to injury

6.4

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, slightly overpitched and driven this time through cover for consecutive boundaries! Top shot

6.5

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 3 runs, again Broad gets the treatment, slashed past point - it's just about fielded on the boundary, though replays suggest it touched the rope and should have been four again

6.6

Broad to Azhar Ali, no run, defended on the front foot back to the bowler

End of over 7 (16 runs) Pakistan 47/1 (RR: 6.71)
Azhar Ali    4* (9b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-16-0

7.2

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, full delivery, towards the blockhole, defended with the toe of the bat

7.3

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, on the stumps and nurdled square on the leg side

7.4

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, full, outside off, attempted drive loops into the air on the bounce

7.5

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, attacking the body, defended to the on side

7.6

Finn to Azhar Ali, 1 run, good length, outside off, played off the outside edge out to point

End of over 8 (2 runs) Pakistan 49/1 (RR: 6.12)
Azhar Ali    5* (12b)      ST Finn    4-0-11-1
Mohammad Hafeez    29* (27b 3x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-16-0

Broad continues, despite conceding 16 off his first over ...

8.1

Broad to Azhar Ali, OUT, what a comeback from Broad, inducing a thin edge as Azhar tries to guide the ball down to third man! The delivery was too quick for the batsman, perhaps tucking him up a bit, and the ball scraped the edge of the bat as Azhar attempted a costly dab. After his seven-ball shocker to start with, Broad is smiling again

Azhar Ali c †Kieswetter b Broad 5 (22m 13b 0x4 0x6) SR: 38.46

8.2

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, good length, outside off and drawing the batsman out, beating his stroke

8.3

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, on the stumps, defended

8.4

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, length, outside off with a touch of away movement and left

8.5

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, good line and length again from Broad, pushed back down the wicket on the front foot

8.6

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, length ball, in the corridor, watchfully ignored by Shafiq

So, Broad turns his frown upside down with a wicket maiden ...

End of over 9 (wicket maiden) Pakistan 49/2 (RR: 5.44)
Asad Shafiq    0* (5b)      SCJ Broad    2-1-16-1
Mohammad Hafeez    29* (27b 3x4)      ST Finn    4-0-11-1

9.1

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, another one gone! This has been a harum-scarum opening from Pakistan, making first use of the wicket for the first time in the series. Hafeez got across to one that pitched outside off but nipped back and rapped him in front - it was probably going on to hit leg. Finn is cutting a swathe through the top order again!

Mohammad Hafeez lbw b Finn 29 (45m 28b 3x4 0x6) SR: 103.57

9.2

Finn to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, front foot, defended back to the bowler from length delivery outside odd

9.3

Finn to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, fuller and catches the inside edge as Misbah pushes forward, the ball squirting through his legs

9.4

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, fiery delivery, rearing up outside off and Misbah leaves

9.5

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, on the stumps and nudged to midwicket - and that's the 50 up for Pakistan

9.6

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, length outside off, seaming back and defended on the move, Finn fielding then rounding for a shy at the stumps. You wouldn't get in his way right now

End of over 10 (1 run) Pakistan 50/3 (RR: 5.00)

10.2

Broad to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, wide of off stump and left alone

10.3

Broad to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, just wide of off stump and left

10.4

Broad to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, got him! Misbah's out now and Pakistan really in trouble. He was pushing at a length ball outside off stump, a hint of movement again produces a thick edge to Graeme Swann at slip. Probably could have left it but Farhat decided to push away from his body and nicked off

11.3

Finn to Umar Akmal, no run, another edge but on the ground to second slip

11.4

14.6

Patel to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, flicked from middle and leg to backward square leg

Drinks and a rather frantic start just being becalmed by the introduction of the spinners, which is perhaps letting Pakistan off the hook perhaps. Plenty of work for the batsmen still to recover this innings...

But England were again led by Steven Finn and did damage early in the innings. They would have taken this target at the start, given it's below-par for this pitch, but may feel they let Pakistan off the hook from where they were...
