Pakistan v England ODI Series - 4th ODI

England v Pakistan

England won by 4 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)

Hello and welcome to the fourth instalment of Revenge is a Dish Best Served Warm and Slightly Sandy. The world of ODI cricket currently appears so brave and new that Aldous Huxley would need a map and a hard hat: England are cruising towards a whitewash, Pakistan have become boring and predictable and one of the greats has played his last innings in limited-overs internationals. Yes, we'll almost certainly not see the like of Owais Shah Ricky Ponting again.

Add to that a declined Mankad in the India-Sri Lanka CB series match and there's plenty to chew over. Even the certainties of England's line-up have been defenestrated, with four changes for Alastair Cook's side. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who won the toss and chose to bat, has also rung the bell ... here are the line-ups:

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Umar Akmal, Shoiab Malik, Shahid Afridi, Adnan Akmal (wk), Junaid Khan, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal.

England: Cook (capt), Pietersen, Trott, Morgan, Buttler, Kieswetter (wk), Patel, Bresnan, Briggs, Dernbach, Finn.

Both captains have shaken things up, with form, fitness and rotation behind several switches on both sides. Pakistan are without the injured Imran Farhat, meaning a recall for Shoaib Malik, while the pace pair of Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema are rested. England, meanwhile, leave out Ravi Bopara and Graeme Swann, both of whom have knocks - meaning ODI debuts for Jos Buttler and Danny Briggs. Of the quicks, only Steve Finn abides, with Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach making their first appearances of the tour.

Well, at least one thing's certain: Pakistan are going to have to open with a spinner, as Junaid is the only fast bowler in the XI. Can England continue their slow march to redemption for the Test whitewashing, or will the real Pakistan at last stand up? Find out with me, Alan Gardner, and my colleagues Andrew McGlashan and Alex Winter, here shortly ...

Hello, Gnasher here for the first few overs of the match. Good to be with you. How much damage will Steven Finn do today?

0.1

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, finds the edge straight away with a good-length delivery but it flies short and wide of second slip who just gets a hand on it

Finn's consistency has been outstanding during this series

0.2

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, touch fuller outside off and it draws Azhar into a drive which finds cover

0.3

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, back of a length outside off and Azhar shoulders arms...decent carry through to Kieswetter at about waist-height

0.4

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, pitched up fuller, Azhar comes onto the front foot and drives it hard into the pitch which sends it one bounce back to Finn

0.5

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, tight line a fraction outside off, Azhar lunges forward and defends to the covers

0.6

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, good pace to end the over and Azhar watches it go through outside off

Another excellent over to start with from Finn

End of over 1 (1 run) Pakistan 1/0 (RR: 1.00)
Azhar Ali    0* (5b)      ST Finn    1-0-1-0
Mohammad Hafeez    1* (1b)

Jade Dernbach will share the new ball ahead of Tim Bresnan. Unlike Finn, Dernbach isn't known for consistency

1.1

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, starts full on off stump and it's defended towards mid-off with bat and pad close together

1.2

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, gone! Excellent start to Dernbach's comeback. A good length outside off and a tentative poke from Hafeez which sent a regulation catch to the keeper. No footwork to speak of from Hafeez, which has been a problem for a number of Pakistan's batsmen

Mohammad Hafeez c †Kieswetter b Dernbach 1 (7m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

1.3

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, good line first ball to Shafiq who lets it go outside off stump

1.4

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, full on middle and off, punched firmly towards mid-on

1.5

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, dragged down shorter and a little too wide outside off, there's a hint of swing but poses no danger to the batsman

1.6

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, lovely shot, good response from Shafiq as he pulls out a sweetly-timed on-drive that whistles to the boundary

End of over 2 (4 runs) Pakistan 5/1 (RR: 2.50)

2.2

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, opens the face and defends towards backward point

2.3

Finn to Azhar Ali, 1 run, back of a length, nips into Azhar who pushes it into the gap at midwicket and they scamper a quick single

2.5

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, more movement for Finn back into the batsman as he lets this go

2.6

Finn to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, worked into leg-side gap at midwicket to keep the strike

End of over 3 (4 runs) Pakistan 9/1 (RR: 3.00)

End of over 4 (3 runs) Pakistan 12/1 (RR: 3.00)
Asad Shafiq    7* (11b 1x4)      JW Dernbach    2-0-7-1

4.1

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, worked into leg side and can't find the gap

4.2

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, and again can't beat the fielder as he picks out square leg with a nicely-timed flick

4.3

Finn to Asad Shafiq, no run, outside off, met with a solid defence by Shafiq

These two batsman showed their potential during the Test series

4.4

Finn to Asad Shafiq, 2 runs, changed his stroke at the last moment, initially wanted to drive but then placed it wide of backward point

4.5

Finn to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, dropped square into the off side

4.6

Finn to Azhar Ali, no run, a handsome drive with a nice follow through, but it goes straight to mid-off who is quite deep

End of over 5 (3 runs) Pakistan 15/1 (RR: 3.00)
Azhar Ali    4* (11b)      ST Finn    3-0-8-0
Asad Shafiq    10* (16b 1x4)      JW Dernbach    2-0-7-1

5.2

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, pulls his line back to off stump and it's pushed towards mid-on

5.3

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, 2 runs, neatly worked away from middle stump through square leg...not quite the accuracy from Dernbach

5.4

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, full on middle and off, defended towards the on side

5.5

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, that's good from Dernbach, on off stump and makes it tough for the batsman to decide whether to play forward or back

5.6

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, cashes in again to make it an expensive over, overpitched on middle and leg then dispatches with a powerful flick through midwicket

So, after a brief spell from me it's back to Alan

End of over 6 (10 runs) Pakistan 25/1 (RR: 4.16)
Asad Shafiq    20* (22b 3x4)      JW Dernbach    3-0-17-1

7.3

Bresnan to Azhar Ali, 1 run, short, tucking the batsman up but they hustle through for one as midwicket misses when a direct hit would have removed Shafiq

Finn to Abdur Rehman, FOUR, full, tempting and edged through second slip. See, I said he was a run machine

48.2

Finn to Abdur Rehman, FOUR, length but picked up early and swung away over square leg! See, I said etc and so on

That little salvo has prompted some tinkering by Finn and Cook ...

48.3

Finn to Abdur Rehman, OUT, and that's the result! He dropped shorted, targetting Rehman's body, and the batsman could only scoop it to the backward square-leg fielder inside the circle

Abdur Rehman c Trott b Finn 12 (7m 7b 2x4 0x6) SR: 171.42

48.4

Finn to Saeed Ajmal, no run, straight and completely missed by Ajmal, who spins on his axis like a top

48.5

Finn to Saeed Ajmal, 1 run, pitched up, driven to long-on

48.6

Finn to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, length ball, played off the back foot to point

"Finn's worst figures of the series," mutters my colleague Alex Winter, who also didn't like The Magical Mystery Tour much

End of over 49 (10 runs) Pakistan 235/8 (RR: 4.79)
Misbah-ul-Haq    45* (49b 1x4 1x6)      ST Finn    10-0-42-2

Dernbach to the death, then ...

49.1

Dernbach to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, slower delivery, deucing Misbah's drive outside off

49.2

Dernbach to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, dropped by Pietersen at wide long-off! Misbah gave it some tap but not enough, saved only by KP's butter fingers as he dived forwards

49.3

Dernbach to Saeed Ajmal, 1 bye, wide and slow but missed - the batsmen run anyway

49.4

Dernbach to Misbah-ul-Haq, OUT, no more lives for Misbah - this time he slogs a length ball to deep midwicket and Trott, the man underneath, makes no mistake

Misbah-ul-Haq c Trott b Dernbach 46 (79m 52b 1x4 1x6) SR: 88.46

49.5

Dernbach to Saeed Ajmal, no run, ooh, he's crafty is Dernbach, tossing in another teaser that Ajmal tries to mow over midwicket but misses entirely, the ball skipping just past leg stump

49.6

Dernbach to Saeed Ajmal, OUT, that'll do it, full and straight and Ajmal has his stumps rearranged. Dernbach finishes with four wickets and it's been something of a comeback for England in the second half of the innings

Saeed Ajmal b Dernbach 1 (8m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 20.00

Pakistan have set England 238 to win, then, and Cook's men will fancy chasing that down, I reckon. Given an excellent platform by Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, Pakistan succumbed to a combination of feckless batting and tight, unrelenting bowling, losing their last six wickets for 35. On the face of it, that score looks below par.

There is certainly still hope, however - the wicket should offer Pakistan's battery of spinners plenty of turn and, with a couple of new faces down the England order, they might be able to spring a surprise. They'll have to get past Cook, Pietersen, Trott and Morgan first, though ... Join Alex Winter in 45 minutes to see how they get on.
