Pakistan v England T20I Series - 1st T20I

England v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 8 runs

Here we are again then! This has been a rather long tour in the final analysis, beginning with the warm-up matches on January 7, but we're now on the final leg with the start of the T20 series. Two matches here in Dubai, today and Saturday and then back to Abu Dhabi on Monday before everyone can go home for a little break. The Pakistanis are also on tour remember and have been complaining of home sickness. Having been stuffed in the one-dayers, the cash has come in for England to win this series, a general 4/6 shot for those who fancy a gamble. 6/5 about a Pakistan revival for today's first T20, which begins at 1600 GMT. As ever you're with myself Alex Winter and our court-reporting specialist Monty Gardner who will be on for news of the teams and the toss which is coming up shortly...

Howdy and welcome to the most popular form of the sport. Punters don't like cricket, we're told, they love T20; and doubtless the Dubai International Stadium will be thronging with locals and ex-pats this evening*. Anyway, the news is that England have won the toss and will bowl. Today's hit'n'giggle gladiators with you in a mo.

England: 1 Pietersen, 2 Kieswetter (wk), 3 Bopara, 4 Morgan, 5 Bairstow, 6 Buttler, 7 Patel, 8 Broad (capt), 9 Swann, 10 Dernbach, 11 Finn

Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Awais Zia 3 Asad Shafiq, 4 Umar Akmal (wk), 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Shoaib Malik, 8 Hammad Azam, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid Khan

So, the scurrilous rumours about Alastair Cook's inclusion in the squad seemed to have been overplayed: Ravi Bopara is fit to return, while Kevin Pietersen retains his position as opener after his successfull ODI showing - Alex Hales is the man to miss out. Bairstow and Buttler, who sound like they should be a comedy double-act, will provide the lower middle-order with its kaboom factor.

For Pakistan, Awais "Mini Boom Boom" Zia will open with Mohammad Hafeez. We'll get to see whether that mantle hangs heavily in a few minutes' time ... There's another new face down the order as allrounder Hammad Azam comes in to the side for his T20I debut. In the bowling, Abdur Rehman drops out for Umar Gul, to give Pakistan a full complement (ie. two) of seamers.

*I could be wrong

Right, here we go, Steven Finn is at the top of his run-up. World Twenty20 here we come (in about seven months' time) ...

0.1

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, short, tucked off the hips to short square leg

A first look at Awais Zia, who I'm already mentally referring to as "Basil Brush" ...

0.2

Finn to Awais Zia, 2 runs, length ball, smashed on the up over cover. He's gone for it first ball and although he doesn't quite middle it, the shot goes a reasonable distance before its reeled in

0.3

Finn to Awais Zia, FOUR, pitched up and this time he tees off over midwicket, swinging powerfully through the ball. Little footwork but with a eye like that, none was needed

0.4

Finn to Awais Zia, no run, length, beaten outside off stump. And Finn gives Zia and early earful

0.5

Finn to Awais Zia, 1 run, length and again Zia has a welt, the bat turning in his hands as the ball flies to deep backward square leg

0.6

Finn to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, on the stumps and hitting the top of the pad

So, looks like Zia's billing was justified ...

End of over 1 (8 runs) Pakistan 8/0 (RR: 8.00)
Mohammad Hafeez    1* (2b)      ST Finn    1-0-8-0
Awais Zia    7* (4b 1x4)

At the other end, it's Jade Dernbach ...

1.1

Dernbach to Awais Zia, no run, length, pulls hard but misses the ball

1.2

Dernbach to Awais Zia, no run, tossed up, slower ball outside off and Zia misses with an expansive drive. The delivery was out the back of the hand - a Dernbach special - and foxed the left-hander

1.3

Dernbach to Awais Zia, 1 run, length, swung hard out to deep backward square, fielded by Bairstow in the deep

1.4

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length, outside off and defended back to the bowler

1.5

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, beatifully timed off his legs, slightly overpitched by Dernbach and the batsman pings a glance over midwicket for four

1.6

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, loose, slingy ball, well wide and clubbed over the infield for another boundary out to deep extra-cover. The dancing girls (yes, even in Dubai there are T20 cheerleaders) go wild

End of over 2 (9 runs) Pakistan 17/0 (RR: 8.50)
Mohammad Hafeez    9* (5b 2x4)      JW Dernbach    1-0-9-0
Awais Zia    8* (7b 1x4)      ST Finn    1-0-8-0

2.1

Finn to Awais Zia, SIX, my word, he's thrown the sink, the oven and the microwave at that! It wasn't all that short but Zia picked it up immediately, swinging it away over fine leg ... If that was a top edge, it was some top edge!

2.2

Finn to Awais Zia, 2 runs, length, on the stumps and hoicked high over midwicket, chased down near the boundary rope

2.3

Finn to Awais Zia, 1 wide, Finn's being hit off his line, swinging one down the leg side

2.3

Finn to Awais Zia, 2 runs, again Zia flings the bat at a length ball on his legs, doesn't quite connect properly this time but the ball drops just over Pietersen's head as he ran back from midwicket

2.4

Finn to Awais Zia, 4 leg byes, swivel pulls, misses with the bat but deflects very fine off the pads

2.5

Finn to Awais Zia, OUT, ah, done him - Finn's slower ball deceives Zia, who is too quickly through his drive and only succeeds in looping it to mid-off. And Finn doesn't half give the batsman a send off too!

Awais Zia c Broad b Finn 18 (15m 12b 1x4 1x6) SR: 150.00

2.6

Finn to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, pitched up and clipped in more orthodox - but no less brutal - fashion through midwicket

Well, that's was quite a start to proceedings. Does anyone have a new favourite international opener?

End of over 3 (19 runs) Pakistan 36/1 (RR: 12.00)
Asad Shafiq    4* (1b 1x4)      ST Finn    2-0-23-1
Mohammad Hafeez    9* (5b 2x4)      JW Dernbach    1-0-9-0

The captain, B>Stuart Broad, decides that if you need a job doing ...

3.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, outside off, length ball and guided to third man

3.2

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, length, outside off and Shafiq chops into the ground while attempting to run the ball fine

3.3

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, bit of width, cut hard straight to point where Morgan, thnaks to his cat-like reflexes, is already poised to throw at the stumps

3.4

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, played short towards point but again fielded swiftly by Morgan

3.5

Broad to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, fuller length, punched to mid-on

3.6

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length, defended square on the off side and the batsmen quickly abort an attempted dash for one

End of over 4 (2 runs) Pakistan 38/1 (RR: 9.50)
Mohammad Hafeez    10* (7b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-2-0
Asad Shafiq    5* (5b 1x4)      ST Finn    2-0-23-1

Dernbach replaces Finn.

4.1

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, FOUR, short, too much width, uppercut over the infield. Lovely stroke from Shafiq, who looks unflappable

4.2

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, no run, straighter, chopped into the off side

4.3

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, hit high, high, HIGH but not far enough ... and dropped! It was another slower ball, scooped just over mid-off and Graeme Swann got there with plenty of time to spare before botching a simple catch over his shoulder

4.4

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, back of a length, on the stumps, whipped hard through midwicket to the sweeper in the deep

4.5

Dernbach to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, outside off, deflected to third man

4.6

Dernbach to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, fuller ball, worked to short square leg

There's plenty of atmosphere in the stadium this evening - and, you know what? They seem to like it when England players drop the ball. I know!

End of over 5 (8 runs) Pakistan 46/1 (RR: 9.20)
Mohammad Hafeez    12* (9b 2x4)      JW Dernbach    2-0-17-0
Asad Shafiq    11* (9b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-2-0

5.1

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length, on the stumps, knocked short on the leg side

5.2

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, good line and length, Hafeez drives expansively but into his pads via an inside edge

5.3

Broad to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, maintains that probing line, pushed off the back foot to cover

5.4

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, back of a length, on off, defended on to the wicket

5.5

Broad to Asad Shafiq, no run, spots Shafiq backing away and follows him, forcing another defensive stroke

5.6

Broad to Asad Shafiq, 2 runs, on the stumps, flicked fine where long leg comes round to prevent a boundary

An excellent start with the ball from Broad. Though he's yet to find a team-mate to follw his example ...

End of over 6 (3 runs) Pakistan 49/1 (RR: 8.16)
Asad Shafiq    13* (12b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-5-0
Mohammad Hafeez    13* (12b 2x4)      JW Dernbach    2-0-17-0

Another change, with Graeme Swann on to try and atone for that dropped dolly ...

6.1

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, beaten outside off and there's an attempted stumping - but his back foot didn't leave the crease

6.2

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, dabbed fine to give short third man a chase

6.3

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, flighted, chipped down the ground to long-on

6.4

Swann to Asad Shafiq, 3 runs, telegraphed as Shafiq reversed his hands early, but he executed it well, sweeping fine from outside off - and some clumsy relay fielding down at third man gifts Pakistan another run

6.5

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, room outside off and chopped through point

6.6

Swann to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, striaghter, worked from in front of his pad to square leg

End of over 7 (8 runs) Pakistan 57/1 (RR: 8.14)
Asad Shafiq    17* (14b 2x4)      GP Swann    1-0-8-0
Mohammad Hafeez    17* (16b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-5-0

You know England are under the pump when they turn to the arm of Ravi Bopara inside ten overs. Here comes the Medium-Pace Menace ...

7.1

Bopara to Asad Shafiq, no run, cutter, pitched up outside off and chopped into the ground

7.2

Bopara to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, outside off, taking the pace off again, flicked to square leg

7.3

Bopara to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, impudent stuff from Hafeez! He stepped out and scooped the ball from a length outside off, over the infield and down to long leg. Has Hafeez finally found his touch again?

7.4

Bopara to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, pulled hard from in front of his body to deep midwicket

7.5

Bopara to Asad Shafiq, 1 run, full, worked to midwicket from in front of the stumps

7.6

Bopara to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, width, whipped cut shot through cover-point

End of over 8 (8 runs) Pakistan 65/1 (RR: 8.12)
Mohammad Hafeez    23* (19b 3x4)      RS Bopara    1-0-8-0
Asad Shafiq    19* (17b 2x4)      GP Swann    1-0-8-0

8.1

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, on off, turning to hit the pad ... and they turn down a run, with Shafiq scrambling to make his ground. The umpires call for a review. This could be close ... Kieswetter fielded the ball at short square leg and fired a throw to Swann, who took the ball in front of the stumps and then had to swing his arm round behind him to break the wicket. And because his elbow disturbed the bails - with the ball in his hand - he managed to beat Shafiq's dive!

Asad Shafiq run out 19 (27m 17b 2x4 0x6) SR: 111.76

8.2

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, tossed up outside off, played back to the bowler

8.3

Swann to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, flighted, slog-swept but not enough on it ... this time Bairstow makes no mistake with the catch, coming round from deep midwicket. Apologies, I think I might have jinxed Hafeez a few balls back. But, in my defence, that was a stupid time to play such a shot, with Shafiq just out

Mohammad Hafeez c Bairstow b Swann 23 (44m 22b 3x4 0x6) SR: 104.54

8.4

Swann to Shahid Afridi, no run, on off, defended into the off side

8.5

Swann to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, flighted, gives it the charge and hacked to mid-on

8.6

Swann to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full, outside off, turned to midwicket but quickly snaffled by the fielder and that ends a fine over from Swann. England are right back in this

End of over 9 (1 run) Pakistan 66/3 (RR: 7.33)
Misbah-ul-Haq    0* (1b)      GP Swann    2-0-9-1

No more dobblers from Ravi, here's Broad again ...

9.1

Broad to Shahid Afridi, no run, length, outside off, pushed square

9.2

Broad to Shahid Afridi, FOUR, pitched up, swinging away a touch, and a thick edge goes well wide of the diving Kieswetter

9.3

Broad to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, golf shot from Afridi, another thick edge that flies down to third man this time

There's now a slip in place, with the away swing in mind.

9.4

Broad to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, length, jabbed short behind point

9.5

Broad to Shahid Afridi, 1 run, full, touch of movement again, square driven past the diving man at point

9.6

Broad to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, full again, driven on the front foot but well stopped by Bopara at extra-cover

Time for me to hand over to Alex Winter. See you again in a bit ...

End of over 10 (7 runs) Pakistan 73/3 (RR: 7.30)

Swann to continue, he's been good thus far...

10.1

Swann to Shahid Afridi, OUT, and he's got the danger man! Afridi chips a full ball from leg stump to midwicket. A very simple chance to Eoin Morgan who didn't have to move to take it with two hands at head height. Afridi tried to use his feet, Swann fired it into leg stump and it just popped up to the fielder

Shahid Afridi c Morgan b Swann 7 (9m 7b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

10.2

Swann to Umar Akmal, no run, full on middle stump and defended forward

10.3

Swann to Umar Akmal, no run, well bowled, done all ends up by an old-fashioned arm-ball outside off stump

10.4

Swann to Umar Akmal, OUT, another for Swann! This has been some impact. Akmal with a very poor shot, not catching a big heave down the ground and Dernbach races in from long off to tumble forward and take a fine catch down low, he nearly fumbled it. Akmal didn't learn from the previous game

Umar Akmal c Dernbach b Swann 0 (2m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

So now England have dragged things back wonderfully well with wickets and now have Pakistan in trouble...

10.5

Swann to Shoaib Malik, no run, length outside off, forward to defend

10.6

Swann to Shoaib Malik, no run, forward on off stump to push back to the bowler

A double wicket maiden! Unheard of in T20...

11.1

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 2 runs, paddle swept, very fine down to the fine leg rope

11.2

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, Misbah steps outside the leg stump but only drives to mid on

11.3

11.4

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, no run, goes to paddle sweep again but this time misses, runs off the pad to square leg

11.5

Patel to Misbah-ul-Haq, 1 run, turned off a length to the right of midwicket

11.6

12.5

Swann to Shoaib Malik, no run, length and blocked on off stump

Well that's a comeback for Pakistan after being in deep trouble, at one stage 73 for 5 with England fighting back as they do after Awais Zia made that blazing start. But Misbah the Great - his stature his affording him such a title - again guided Pakistan with a cool innings, ably supported by Malik. But it's only a par score for the ground and world T20 cricket so England will have every hope to knock these off...only a short break in T20s so stay with me...
