Misbah-ul-Haq will be under pressure against South Africa - Wasim Akram © Associated Press

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has expressed shock at the appointment of Misbah-ul-Haq as Test captain for the upcoming series against South Africa.

"I was surprised when I heard that Misbah has been named the Pakistan captain," Akram told Mobile ESPN. "He has been out of the team since the beginning of the year and to bring him back as a captain was a bit shocking."

Misbah was a regular member of the Pakistan middle-order in all formats following his comeback to the side in 2007. He was dropped after a lean trot during the Test series in Australia that ended in January this year. Despite a surprise appearance for the 2010 World Twenty20 in the West Indies in May, few expected him to make another Test appearance.

Pakistan's current leadership crisis, following Shahid Afridi's latest retirement from Tests and Salman Butt's suspension for alleged involvement in spot-fixing, forced the board to recall Misbah and appoint him as their fourth Test captain in 2010 alone.

"They did not have too many choices," Akram reasoned. "Kamran Akmal is there but he is inexperienced. They have also tried Shoaib Malik. Mohammad Yousuf is making a comeback after a long time and he should just concentrate on his batting at the moment.

"If they have named him the captain for one series, it's okay. He is already 36 and the PCB needs to find a long-term solution to this problem. I do not know the vision of the selectors."

Pakistan have endured a torrid period following the controversial tour of England and Akram noted Misbah would have a key role as a leader in the South Africa series, both on and off the field. "Misbah will be under pressure. He will have to improve the image of Pakistan cricket. For Misbah handling the media and getting runs himself could be demanding.

"The wickets in Dubai might suit Misbah's style of batting, but you cannot take the South Africans lightly. They are a very tough opposition under any conditions. Misbah needs to work hard and make sure he earns the faith of the team. If he gets runs, everything else will take care of itself."

I am not shocked nor surprized. Anything is possible in Pakistan Cricket. I wont even surrpize to appoint a captain on his debu test. That is only left so far.

Posted by known_stranger on (October 12, 2010, 19:41 GMT)

I respect wasim alot considering his contribution to pakistan cricket but i dont understand one point at all why the ex players like sikandar bakht, jalaluddin, amir sohail, Iqbal qasim having average cricketing career talk and criticize young guys and impose their opinion on people in different tv shows. I am happy that emerging teams like Hyderabad, Pindi and Multan, sialkot and faisalabad are answering these people who are stuck up with Karachi VRS Lahore players phobia. Misbah is a talent and we should support him.

Posted by funsuk on (October 12, 2010, 13:50 GMT)

This is just a same game PCB has been playing for so long. They dropped players for one or two tournament and get them back in a squad. Misbah is also part of it with Imaran Farhad, Shoib Malik, Kamran Akamal and next will be Rana Naved since ban has been lifted. They should give a genuine change to young players. Tired of it...!!!

Posted by vinodkd99 on (October 12, 2010, 13:05 GMT)

Real problem time for PCB. There is hardly any doubt that Misbah is going to flop in the series against the Proteas later this month. In that case, who shall be next person to lead team Pakistan. Normally vice captain of a team is tipped to lead the team in case the captain is removed or injured, but here Misbah who was not in team for quite some time has leap frogged Kamran Akmal to lead the team. It woild not be bizarre in case we do have any other person leading team Pakistan in the next series. A typical example of musical chairs.

Posted by bluebillion on (October 12, 2010, 12:13 GMT)

The long term solution for Pakistan is to stop playing test cricket. Be happy with ODIs and T20s with Afridi leading in these two formats until the next match fixing scandal. Whats left in the test team anyway without Butt, Asif and Amir? They are not in a position to even beat Bangladesh in test cricket.

Posted by   on (October 12, 2010, 11:13 GMT)

For Pakistan Cricket's sake, loose Shoaib Malik, Yousaf and Misbah permanently from the team. They perform little on field yet score a lot of political points off it. Younas should be back, so should be Asim Kamal. Get players who actually perform. I am sure there are plenty of good batsmen in the first class that deserve a chance and have the ability to justify their selection as Misbah and Yousaf did, but unfortunately are no longer contributing and are hurting the team instead.

Every series..a new captain..wonder how will dey make a comeback ever..wid dis sort of a situation....da next captain could be umar gul or saeed ajmal if dis is da case!=P

MIsbah Vs Akram ..................... ?

Posted by maddy20 on (October 12, 2010, 7:10 GMT)

The timing of all this couldn't have been worse for Pakistan with worldcup just 4 months away! They should probably book their return tickets in advance for the day their last group stage game ends!

Posted by Morpheus100 on (October 12, 2010, 6:29 GMT)

Look who is talking

he should have been a captian 6 yrs ago

but thanks to Waseem and and inzy he was kept out Waseem why dont you disappear

you were the biggest match fixer in the pakistani team and Allah punished you for it

Posted by rohanbala on (October 12, 2010, 2:01 GMT)

Sorry Wasim... If you are keen to contribute to Pakistan cricket, you should take up a post in PCB and do what best you can. You have given your best for Pakistan cricket only as a player. Probably your stint behind the mike makes you criticise decisions such as this. We are happy that you didnt propose another stint for Shoaib Malik as captain.

Posted by India2world on (October 12, 2010, 0:22 GMT)

It is quite funny. If moshin khan is saying our first choice was yunus than when they have not gone for it ? Then what is wrong with shoiab Malik? He has done good in captaincy and he is clear from all the match fixing scandal

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 23:51 GMT)

It is fair to say that, Bangladesh batting team is much stronger than Pakistan at this moment.

Posted by McGorium on (October 11, 2010, 17:57 GMT)

@Hibs: Kartik1982 was trying to be funny. We can argue on whether it was really funny or not, but that's beside the point. Corruption happens because people have poor ethical and moral standards. Not because there are people who are willing to take advantage of their lack of moral rectitude. In other words, it's the taker of the bribe who is really the cause, not the giver. The giver is merely taking advantage of your weakness, and sure, that's bad too, but it's a lesser crime. Alcoholism happens not because of breweries, but because people don't have the discipline. If a person really wants to get high, there are no shortage of legal substances that can be abused. If a person really wants to be corrupt, bookie or no bookie, they'll find a way. Betting is legal in the UK, and you can bet on yourself; who's checking? The problem is really the subcontinental "chalta hai" attitude. Everyone takes bribes, so why not me?

Posted by Chunati on (October 11, 2010, 17:30 GMT)

@bluebillion: Stop the rubbish of suggesting that Imran Khan can play against Bangladesh. Even a joke of this kind is not called for.

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 17:27 GMT)

It's a temporary decision for this series or may be for one next.....Pak needs to find out it's permanent solution & it's possible if n only if there's someone whose performance consistently good enough for this position.

Posted by ArjunPandit on (October 11, 2010, 16:49 GMT)

@Hibs, I am sorry for @karthik_1982, comment, he shouldn't have make joke out of this situation and nobody should laugh at pakistan cricket's expence, they should realise that how pakistani fans are hurt. And about mumbai as an epicentre, yes may be, but the RING LEADER of this is lives in Karachi , Pakistan, well protected by some of the influaintial people.

Posted by bluebillion on (October 11, 2010, 14:30 GMT)

I think PCB should go for a "non-playing" captain theory for Pakistan. Bring back Imran Khan in this role!!! Heck he can even play a couple of games against the associates and even bangladesh just to get the feel back! List of players PCB has WASTED over the last few years - Saqlain, Younis, Yousuf, Razzak (almost), Kaneria, Shoaib Malik, Akhtar, Imran Nazir, Rana ...

Posted by --.-- on (October 11, 2010, 14:19 GMT)

Now what can be said ? They had no other option !

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 14:12 GMT)

saeed ajmal is right choice to lead pak in tests. as he is performing well . his fitnessis good. and moreover his discipline is good .he is not involve in any scandal & politics

Posted by asadkum on (October 11, 2010, 13:48 GMT)

Mohammad Asad from USA.....

PCB does have much option ???? Is PCB have some allergy with Younis ....I guess.... yes ......... Why not Razzak be considered as a Cap. ???? Misbah was not even in the squad for his poor form.... Is it for the time being ???? then soon Pak will have 11 captains !!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 13:38 GMT)

Pakistani captains and players are busy earning time to think about opinion is that people like Imran, Wasim, Miandad,....should come into the PCB and run the PCB....clear the mess guys.....

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 10:01 GMT)

Wasim is right. Soon Pakistan will have 11 captains. PCB has become a laughing stock. Get Ijaz Butt out than will see Pakistan progress.

Posted by OnlySujit on (October 11, 2010, 9:12 GMT)

Who was Pak captain on 1.1.2009..does anyone know this tricky question?

Can Cricinfo please publish a synposis timeline of last 2 years changes (2009-2010) for just three factors - - changes in captaincy.. - who all were suspended and re-insated... - who all retired and came back and then re-retired.....

haha LOL....

Posted by poderdubdubdub on (October 11, 2010, 9:03 GMT)

@Karthik_1982, my friend its okay for you to talk about banned and unbanned cricket teams as its your country India which has Mumbie as the epicentre of world cricketing corruption and thats where the banned and unbanned teams are selected for the world cricket.

Posted by bkraks21 on (October 11, 2010, 8:51 GMT)

Akram does not know the vision of the selectors. What a joke. Do any pakistani politicians and PCB officials ever have one?

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 8:34 GMT)

younis khan..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Posted by cricinme on (October 11, 2010, 7:34 GMT)

For all those, who are saying - Who else? Why not Abdul Razzaq ?? He has been playing in all formats for Pakistan for such a long time and has always given his best. He has been the best allrounder for Pak after Akram. So why not he be given a chance. Does he not have a god father in the board? He should be made captain for all formats and believe me many of Pak players will be there in the next IPL cause he is loved by Indian fans.

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 6:35 GMT)

I just wish Salman Butt hadnt been announced captain only for the England series. Then with any luck he could rid himself of the suspension and takeover from Misbah. In fact, given the circumstances at the time, Salman SHOULD have been announced captain for atleast a year, and backed as captain for the future. At THAT time anyway, there was no better choice, though hindsight enables everyone to be wise. Though ofcourse, even now, innocent until proven guilty applies...

Posted by   on (October 11, 2010, 3:43 GMT)

I am shocked that Akram is shocked. After having worked for PCB for 16 years and then watching thing unfold in last 2 years. I will only be shocked if BUTT is fired. Everything else is normal.

Posted by Indus11 on (October 11, 2010, 1:21 GMT)

Is the country the likes of Zaheer Abbas, Javed Miandad and Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram and Inzama ul haq and . . . dare I mention Imran Khan came from? i am sorry but I don't recognise it. What in god's heaven has gone wrong? This country should be #1 in ICC rankings - just look at those averages of the batsmen and Oh there are no bowlers of any repute. The averages don't amount to anything because they are not allowed settle in behind trusted batsmen such as Younis Khan and Yousef and . . well there is just no team here. What is that you say ? BUTT ? What about him ? Ahhh I see. He decides who plays ! Well that explains everything. The team and it's performance reflects what is inside his head - sawdust. This man has no brains - did any one notice his pleas of guilt over unthinking remarks about England - a team that Imran Khan and his players used to humiliate on the grounds of pleasant old England - What ! Get rid of BUTT and give power back to the players - Younis Khan et al.

Posted by monil21 on (October 11, 2010, 1:03 GMT)

i think PCB should try and make a new team, let give chance to youngster,if they fail let them learn then only there will be new team. bringing this old people still they are goin to loose the match and again they will appoint some other person as a captian. let get new pakistan.

Posted by avmd on (October 10, 2010, 23:45 GMT)

Mr Akram, I'm also shocked with your comments. Your "shock" would have carried more weight had you suggested any alternative to Misbah. Under the current situation, who else you would have given the responsibility. True that Misbah has not performed consistently in last year or so, but who has, name a single player from Pakistan, including Yunis and Yusuf, I'm sure you have been following their performance.

Misbah has been technically the most correct batsman in Pakistan and has scored runs under pressure and has been a match winner. He is 36 but he is way much fitter than "younger" Yusuf and Yunis. Yusuf's fitness level has been awful and he has dropped catches which only he could have dropped. Misbah is educated, non-controversial and the best man to lead the side at the moment.

Misbah has captaincy experience, and gives his 100% for the team and he is unlikely to pull his muscle and declare himself unfit just 1/2 hour before starting an important game.

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 23:34 GMT)

Here's how this latest chapter unfolds: Misbah appointed captain, Pakistan lose series in a whitewash, Misbah loses captaincy and is dropped from team, rinse and repeat for next series.

Posted by Karthik_1982 on (October 10, 2010, 23:29 GMT)

Poor pak cricket.... first Zim, then WI and now Pak. Number of countries playing cricket is constantly decreasing. Now Pak can have 2 teams at international stage 1. Banned team & 2. Unbanned team. .........loool

Posted by straight6 on (October 10, 2010, 22:45 GMT)

I woudn't so worry whether Misbah's there for long or short, but in these difficult situations it's a damn good thing that Misbahs accepted the post, or he could have easily walked away from it, so that alone says something about the man. It's easy to criticise, but for the betterment of the game and more importantly the country we have to move on, and it's not easy especially now from the heroics of the England tour and namely the players who have tarnished Pakistans image, which is definately on. I'm 100% sure Imran couldn't even imagine that some low life cricketers who happened to represent Pakistan would come along and put Pakistan in the lowest esteem ever, it's not on, and no player has the rite to briuse and batter the countries name. Misbah is the rite man, he has respect from fellow cricketers and he's been around for some time, which clearly says that he understands the game and he understands what he's to do ahead, and having spoken to him recently he is very determined!

Posted by Nadeem1976 on (October 10, 2010, 22:07 GMT)

This is not acceptable by any means. Misbah and captain of Pakistan team a full member of ICC. I mean if it was Afghanistan or Canada or any other associate then i would agree but Misbah the captain of Legendary pakistani team. Who used to have captains like Imran and Akram. Now misbah is going to captain Pakistani team. Its better for pakistan to do Match fixing than giving Misbah the captaincy.

Worse decsion in last 5 years. PCB better go and fix series but do not disrespect honorable captaincy of pakistani team.

Sad day.

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 21:29 GMT)

What Pakistan need is a captain who can be appointed for at least 3-5 years, regardless of the outcome of the matches. PCB should take a prime example from Aussies and Indians boards (Ricky Ponting and MS Dhoni). Instead of just 2 matches PCB should appoint Misbah-ul-Haq for at least 2 years. He can lead with example and successful leader always lead with examples.

Posted by lethalbouncer on (October 10, 2010, 21:14 GMT)

I don't think any move by Ijaz Butt/PCB can surprise anyone. I would be less surprised if Ijaz Butt appeared in the streets in a chicken costume.

Posted by ather_aziz on (October 10, 2010, 21:09 GMT)

He was definetly the best choice as a test captain at the moment keeping in mind the situation between the pcb and younis khan and he has loads and loads of experience about 150 first class matches and 100 odd list a matches under his belt i dont see any toehr test captain in the squad do u ?

Posted by Tansah on (October 10, 2010, 19:05 GMT)

Misbah ul-Haq is not a brilliant choice. Where is Younis Khan? Why can't Ijaz Butt use his brain (if he even has one) and settle his differences with Younis for Pakistan cricket? Ijaz Butt has to go and he as to go now. He needs to removed and replaced by a logical and thoughtful person with the ability to think ahead and the ability to think before he speaks.

May Allah Bless Pakistan and its people. Ameen.

Posted by stariq on (October 10, 2010, 18:37 GMT)

If not Misbah than who else??? Yonus could have been another choice but knowing his temperament it could turn out to be another disaster. With limited resources in hand, I believe he is the best choice.

Posted by SkTrill on (October 10, 2010, 17:20 GMT)

Can't help but feel bad for Pakistan cricket supporters. There really hasn't been a "team" since wc 2003 under Akram. Misbah now captain of the team, it's a telling sign of a truly clueless and inept cricketing board.

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 17:10 GMT)

this has been a tradition in PCB to appoint those players as captains who are making their come back in the Pakistan Cricket team...... how can such a player lead the whole team, when he is struggling with his own form. In most of the cases, these captains are dropped from the team again after losing one or two series...

Posted by Whisperofdeath on (October 10, 2010, 17:03 GMT)

Pakistan is the country who don't respect the post of captain. Mohsin Khan is only a talkie he is dump like stump. The board of Pakistan is corrupt the whole boad. When the President is corrupt, one of his minister is relative of Butt (ASS). Mark my words, PCB will die its own death.untill and unless things not resolved in timely manner.

Posted by Gully_Fielder on (October 10, 2010, 16:56 GMT)

Misbah, a banker by profession! Aw man, here comes Lehman Brothers part 2. Come on PCB, its not rocket science, Younis is the obvious choice. Pls bring him back for God's sake.

Posted by HugeCricketFan on (October 10, 2010, 16:36 GMT)

Now, this tops it all ... or does it? Will this be the last idiotic move by the current PCB management (more like mismanagement)? Misbah WAS a good cricketer and may still hve something to contribute, but CAPTAIN of PAKISTAN??!! Come one now. Please save Pakistan cricket - why are the respected folks like Imran Khan and Wasim Akram not running the show? I am not a fan of Pakistan but I do not want to see cricket in Pakistan get destroyed by goons like Ijaz Butt and his cronies! Can anyone save cricket in Pakistan or is it too late? Are there any sane decision makers there? Simply amazing that Ijaz has not been fired yet - what more should he do to get his Butt (pun intended) fired? Aren't there others who can do the job? I find that hard to believe, get anyone from the streets and they will do better than this moron! SOMEONE PLEASE SAVE PAKISTAN CRICKET FROM DISASTER, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE - HOPE IT IS NOT TOO LATE!!

Posted by ManiMB on (October 10, 2010, 16:26 GMT)

Well as shocking as it is, the question is not why Misbah was appointed as captain, but in fact the question is who else could have been? I think right now Pakistan is the only Test playing team in the world which does not have a leader or a player capable of doing the job. So it does not even matter anymore. If Kamran was'nt injured he would've been the selector's first choice for sure. But if they can find a way to bring back Younis Khan and who by the way is just fine for Test captaincy. May ALLAH bless Pakistan and all its nationals. AMEEN

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 16:06 GMT)

Is there a choice? Misbah ul haque short term appointment is right under the circumstance- he is cool, disiplined and educated, and has a stay power as batter - something that Paks. lack. As to Paks. V S.Africa, PCB Chair has already dilivered the series in the absence of the main players and he will continue till Pakistan is removed from cricket map. Pakistan problems are at home like dog eat dog . If anything, IjazButt, instead bending on his knees to apolagise to ICC for for his reckless statement, he should have done that to the Punjab where players come from while the commentators boxes sit in Karachi, this is to call spade a spade. The kanagroo investigation these palyes have been put through, if even at best an entrapment, where is the report in cut and dry? I was in favour of Ex Australian P.M selection - you need personalities to put cricket where it belongs. This cricket has no place in North America, here umpires may well end up with broken bones.

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 15:59 GMT)

it seems pakistan cricket is only trying to save some integrity by misbah, however it has to produce better batsmen to compete, one or two guys alone cannot win matches for them, speak of which west indies cricket is already in a downturn, these two teams only gets further down every match

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 14:18 GMT)

All a waste of time we need a new PCB, a new team, forget all the have beens including Younis....i dont even watch them anymore because you dont know who they are playing for?

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 13:56 GMT)

A comeon not another short term decision; since beginning of this year already 4 skippers changed, cricket world is having a laugh on us; for heven sake kick out Ijaz butt.

Posted by Pathiyal on (October 10, 2010, 13:12 GMT)

when you are playing for a nation, you should forget the media. the people prefer to know the players from their actions on the field rather than their public speeches. and we have the right solution to bring back some respect to the team: request imran khan to be the non-playing captain. he can just sit at home and give instructions....none can doubt the ability of the team, only the discipline is at stake! no worries, at the end of the day, the captain should report to mr. imran khan. try it and see if it works out or not...rather than leaving the key with the burglers themselves.

Posted by   on (October 10, 2010, 13:12 GMT)

Dear Wasim Akram, If you were to make a comeback now to Pakistan cricket, they would be well served. I think its only a matter of time before the PCB asks you to lead the side in the 2011 World Cup in the sub-continent. Don't be too shocked or surprised by this though.Wishing you all the best for the future and hope that you do come back as Pak skipper.....

I echo Akram here- Misbah does not even deserve the captaincy, but since Pak has no options remaining, I suppose, its a good short term decision.

Posted by cricket_fan_1980 on (October 10, 2010, 12:38 GMT)

he's a banker by profession prior to and on the side of his cricketing career. perhaps, for that reason, Misbah will be methodical and calculating ...
