Pakistan v South Africa ODI Series - 4th ODI

Pakistan v South Africa

Pakistan won by 1 wicket (with 1 ball remaining)

Lots of questions about Umar Akmal. He was supposed to replace Misbah in the XI earlier in the series but apparently he's not yet recovered from his twisted ankle. In the meantime, the Pakistanis have made their way out and are in a huddle before we know it. Smith and Amla are walking out. Amla's in some form. Not a great crowd to begin with, but it'll surely build up. The fact that this is a must-win game for Pakistan should draw more people in. Shoaib Akhtar will kick things off. Here we go. Two slips

Guy doesn't agree with Theron's exclusion from today's game: "I get that the SA selectors probably want to give Parnell a run, but I find it amazing that they have chosen to leave Theron out... again. It is no secret that death bowling is SA's achilles heel, and they aren't giving the guy a chance to settle into that role. What if Parnell gets tonked? Try Rusty again? Stupid."

Murtaza: "It is very annoying to see Umar Akmal out of this side again. I think Zulqarnain should be dropped as he is not performing well and Umar should replace him." And who will keep? Kamran is injured.

It is very annoying to see Umar Akmal out of this side again. I think Zulqarnain should be dropped as he is not performing well and Umar should replace him.

Big cheers as the players get ready to come out. There's Younis Khan practicing some shots near the boundary, but he'll have to wait for his turn. It's the 'visitors' batting first.

Graeme kicks off the feedback barrage for the day, starting with this: "Anyone else think this SA side is a bit batsmen heavy? I guess you could argue that Dave Miller deserves an extended run, but what kind of a run will he get at 7 anyway? I don't really fancy 10 overs out of Kallis/Duminy. What happens if Steyn or Parnell come in for a bit of stick (they are returning from injury after all)? I would have played Rusty instead of Miller. Won the series, and then played Miller at 4 in the next game."

Just some things for you to glance over before the game starts. Still a good 20-odd minutes to go. Firdose Moonda and Liam Brickhill give us the preview for this match, placing an emphasis on South Africa's rather lacklustre fielding thus far. Another talking point over the last couple of days has been Herschelle Gibbs' autobiography To the Point. A little too To the Point you would think, given some of the things he's said about his escapades during tours which we'd rather not delve too much into here. However, we did manage to interview him and here's what he has to say.

Smith, back for the game, has won the toss and opted to bat. Smith replaces Albie Morkel. Dale Steyn is back, taking Rusty Theron's place. Charl Langeveldt has a niggle, so does Lonwabo Tsotsobe and he's replaced by left-arm seamer Wayne Parnell. For Pakistan, there's just one change. Abdur Rehman, the left-arm spinner, comes in for Saeed Ajmal.

Hello and welcome to the fourth ODI between Pakistan and South Africa being played in Dubai. South Africa lead the series 2-1 at this point, but it's been a closely fought last couple of games, something we didn't really expect after the start to this tour. We'll have the toss in a couple of minutes.

0.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 1 run, tries to rap him on the gloves there, banged in short on middle, Smith moved back, closed the face and turned it behind square for a single

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, no run, short of a good length on the off, gets on the back foot and cracks it towards point with an open face, bowled at 146.2 kph

0.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, 1 run, hitting the bat hard is the man, bowled beautifully in the last game, was deceptive with his slower deliveries, this one's hit the pitch hard, jumps up from middle and is punched into the off side for a quick single

0.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, short of a good length on leg stump, pushes it with a straight bat towards a widish mid-on

0.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, short of a good length again, no movement yet, no swing at all, holds its line, defended solidly in the direction of cover

0.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, strikes him on the thigh as he tries to whip it square, lands outside leg, rolls towards point, good start by Shoaib

End of over 1 (2 runs) South Africa 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
GC Smith    1* (4b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-2-0
HM Amla    1* (2b)

Humayun: "There is no harm in Umar to keep the stumps. Mind you he was a regular wicket keeper at domestic level. Younis can do the job as well if it is a matter of playing an extra regular batsman"

Razzaq to bowl now. Has a short extra cover in place

1.1

Abdul Razzaq to Amla, 1 run, gentle medium to begin with, 124.9 kmph, lands on a good length on middle, pushed wide of mid-on for a single

1.2

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, just a hint of inward movement there, drew him forward with a good length delivery and nipped back in just as he reached to push that towards mid-off

1.3

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, FOUR, shot, short of a good length, stands tall and crunches it between point and cover for the game's first boundary, opened the face and cracked it square

1.4

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, maintaining that length, takes a couple of steps forward on the pitch and dabs him towards point

1.5

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, 2 runs, the bounce is true on this pitch, landed short outside off and he pulled it slightly uppishly between midwicket and mid-on for a brace

1.6

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, 1 run, just one slip and that was edged, would have been well wide of second as well, wanted to drive that on the up through the off side, rolls down towards third man for a single

End of over 2 (8 runs) South Africa 10/0 (RR: 5.00)
GC Smith    8* (9b 1x4)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-8-0
HM Amla    2* (3b)      Shoaib Akhtar    1-0-2-0

2.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 1 bye, the slower one again, cut away, bowled at 123 kmph, landed on middle and Smith played it too early, nipped away past the outside edge deceiving even the wicketkeeper who conceded a bye

2.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, no run, short on the off, rose up and he was in a good position to play the pull but didn't time it well enough, straight to mid-on

Zubair: "I agree with Graeme on this, definitely too batsmen heavy here... Rusty should've started and Miller should sit this one out. That being said, its a decent position to be in heading into the world cup as it clearly shows the talent available to South Africa. Heres to another masterful knock by Amla!! "

2.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, no run, nipped back in from a good length outside off, Amla was cramped there, knocked it down on the pitch, it bounced back into his pads

Just the one slip now

2.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, 1 run, slower one bowled fuller outside off, turns the face and places it wide of midwicket for a quick single, picked it this time, the offcutter again

2.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, short on middle, gets back and drops it back towards the bowler with a straight bat

2.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, slower one again, held back the length there, Smith was content to stay in his crease and play it towards cover

End of over 3 (2 runs) South Africa 12/0 (RR: 4.00)
GC Smith    8* (12b 1x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-3-0
HM Amla    3* (6b)      Abdul Razzaq    1-0-8-0

3.1

Abdul Razzaq to Amla, 1 run, a fraction short outside off, waits for it and taps it down towards third man for a single

Andrew Peterson: "I wish we could settle on a bowling unit. At what point does Kallis not bowl ? I rather favour Rusty Theron. Also, surely if you get tonked for two sixes in an over you on not going to bowl the same line and length? Don't they talk to the bowlers!"

3.2

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, cautiously played, moved back in his crease to that shortish delivery and patted it back with a full face

3.3

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, bowls it on a good length, steps forward and pushes it firmly towards extra cover

3.4

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, slower one bowled full outside off, mistimes a drive straight to mid-off

Freak has issued an ultimatum: "If Hashim scores a century again, I will quit watching cricket. Its just impossible to beat the law of averages." Haider has moved up to the stumps

3.5

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, bowls it short of a good length on the off, punched towards extra cover

3.6

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, FOUR, slower one, a bit of width this time and Smith cashes in, gets to the pitch and flays it wide of cover for a boundary, freed his arms there, a gift ball of sorts after a reasonably tight over

End of over 4 (5 runs) South Africa 17/0 (RR: 4.25)
GC Smith    12* (17b 2x4)      Abdul Razzaq    2-0-13-0
HM Amla    4* (7b)      Shoaib Akhtar    2-0-3-0

4.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, no run, didn't pick the slower one there though the idea was right, short ball well outside off and Amla had made his mind up to dispatch it over midwicket, couldn't connect though

A widish slip in place now

4.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, 1 run, short, quicker this time, and pulled hard but just wide of Wahab Riaz at mid-on who dives but can't quite stop it, not much damage done, just the single

4.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, FOUR, lovely timing, that's his favourite shot, good length ball on the pads and it's a flick past midwicket, Asad Shafiq gives chase and dives needlessly, that was always going to be four

Theron has the sympathies of many of our readers. Guy is one of them. Here he goes again: "Sorry to bang on, but I'm really annoyed at Theron's exclusion. Death bowling is as important as strike bowling, and Theron is the best SA has. With the WC just seven games away, the dude needs game time. I'll flip my lid if death bowling let's us down on the subcontinent and Theron is not regularly in the fold"

4.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, pushed off the front foot towards mid-off, there's no slip now

4.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 2 runs, nice timing again, shortish delivery on leg stump and it's punched past a short midwicket who's been placed there exactly for that shot, Akhtar is not happy with himself

4.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, slower one on the off stump, 118 kmph and it's driven hard and beautifully but Akhtar gets in the way, kicking it away and giving the batsman a cold stare. A solid start this for South Africa

End of over 5 (7 runs) South Africa 24/0 (RR: 4.80)
GC Smith    18* (21b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-10-0
HM Amla    5* (9b)      Abdul Razzaq    2-0-13-0

Imran: "I disagree with the inclusion of Abdur Rehman. Where spin bowlers like Shahid Afridi and Mohammed Hafeez who is more effective then just a part time spinner are doing really well. Then why not replace Saeed Ajmal for Misbah or Umar, while you know that the problem lies in the batting and not in the bowling!"

5.1

Abdul Razzaq to Amla, 1 run, lovely, that was bowled reasonably wide of the off stump, Amla moved all the way across and whipped it through square leg, there's protection in the deep though

5.2

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, short, and it's crashed off the back foot but it's well fielded by Shafiq at point who hurls himself to his right

5.3

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, defended solidly on the side of the pitch

5.4

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, pitched up slightly, driven firmly but straight to mid-off

5.5

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, 1 run, mid-on is a little deep and Smith, this time, just pushes it gently towards that fielder to sneak in a quick single

5.6

Abdul Razzaq to Amla, FOUR, easily done, a rubbish delivery outside off, short and wide and it's smacked through point for a boundary

End of over 6 (6 runs) South Africa 30/0 (RR: 5.00)
HM Amla    10* (11b 1x4)      Abdul Razzaq    3-0-19-0
GC Smith    19* (25b 3x4)      Shoaib Akhtar    3-0-10-0

Shafaqat Ali: "The wicket keeping discussion reminds me of same issues with India when Dravid used to keep the wickets for them as they struggled to find a good wicket keeper. Dravid wicket keeping gave them an option to play an extra batsman in those troubled days for Indian cricket. Pakistan is going through the bad time, and there is no harm in such an approach if Umar or Younis really are willing to keep wickets."

6.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, FOUR, Smith and Amla are looking good here, seized the length early, Shoaib dragged that short on middle and it was thumped through midwicket

Round the wicket now...

6.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, fires it on a good length on middle and is met respectfully by Smith onto the pitch

6.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, bangs it short outside off, it's handled well by Smith who gets on top of it and takes his bottom-hand off, nicely done

6.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, no run, slower one this time, Smith came down the track while simultaneously making room, picked the slower one there but again, drove it well but straight to mid-off

6.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 1 run, there is a deep square leg in place and this one goes straight to him, whipped off the back foot

6.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Amla, OUT, short of a length outside off, Amla senses a chance and rightly opts for a pull but was a little late on the shot it seems, tried to smack it over midwicket, got the top edge and was taken comfortably by Imran Farhat at midwicket

HM Amla c Imran Farhat b Shoaib Akhtar 10 (12b 1x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

The opening partnership was going strong with both batsmen looking solid, but it's the man in form who has to go. He's varied his pace well has Shoaib and it appears this one proved just a little too quick for the batsman. Jacques Kallis comes in.

End of over 7 (5 runs) South Africa 35/1 (RR: 5.00)
     Shoaib Akhtar    4-0-15-1
GC Smith    24* (30b 4x4)      Abdul Razzaq    3-0-19-0

7.1

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, 2 runs, short on middle by Razzaq, is pulled away by Smith well wide of deep square leg for a couple of runs

7.2

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, bowled it on a good length on the off, defended watchfully by Smith into the leg side

7.3

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, shortish on leg stump, attempting his favoured flick again but can't connect, is struck on the thigh

7.4

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, midwicket, straight to him, straying on leg stump and it's Smith's zone but can't quite pierce the field this time

7.5

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, holds its line, lands on a good length on the off, 127.6 kmph, and is defended solidly

7.6

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, no run, slower one bowled short outside leg and cuts back in, tries to turn the face on it but can't connect and is struck on the pad

End of over 8 (2 runs) South Africa 37/1 (RR: 4.62)

8.1

Shoaib Akhtar to Kallis, 1 run, ruffles up Kallis with a short delivery on middle, fends it away towards fine leg for a single to get off the mark

8.2

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 1 run, round the wicket to Smith who knocks it just wide of midwicket for a quick single

One slip for the new man

8.3

Shoaib Akhtar to Kallis, 1 run, worked away into the leg side towards midwicket, not far from the fielder and he opts for the single, makes it in time and would have been in even if it was a direct hit, stretched hard and tumbled and hurt his wrist in the process, the magic spray is out

David: "I think keeping Miller was the right decision. If SA went for Rusty, it would have been 7 Botha, 8 Morkel, 9 Steyn, 10 Parnell, 11 Rusty. Botha is not a number 7 (he's no Dhoni). Not one of the last 4 is a reliable batter - far too brittle. Kallis did very well in with ball in the two games he's played - and you have to compromise somewhere."

Lawrence: "I don't get this "batsmen heavy" theory. You only need 5 bowlers in an ODI. SA already have 5 with Kallis bowling his full allotment, and Duminy in the wings for back-up. No point going in with 7 bowlers when batsmen/runs win you ODI's!"

8.4

Shoaib Akhtar to Smith, 1 run, slower one bowled short outside off, guided off the back foot towards third man for a single

8.5

Shoaib Akhtar to Kallis, no run, punched towards point, targeting the off stump is Shoaib

Jenny sent this in a while back: "@Freak, If Hashim gets out now, you will get the curse of whole African Nation. Suicide is a better option!;-)"

8.6

Shoaib Akhtar to Kallis, no run, short of a good length on the off, gets back and pushes it towards extra cover

End of over 9 (4 runs) South Africa 41/1 (RR: 4.55)

GC Smith    28* (38b 4x4)      Abdul Razzaq    4-0-21-0

Doc joins in the debate about Theron: "I hear the comments about Theron's exclusion, and do feel for him, but think back to what Parnell did in the T20 World Cup in England. He bowled yorkers at will and was unplayable! That's the bowler we need at the death! Faster than Theron, gets more movement with the ball, and a better batsmen, so Parnell should play. With regards to leaving Miller out - we need an explosive lower order batsman now that Albie is gone (thank goodness!). Maybe drop Ingram, as he really is more of a longer format player. My 2 cents worth...."

9.1

Abdul Razzaq to Smith, 1 run, that's 5000 runs for Smith as a captain, whipped towards fine leg for a single.

He's the sixth player to have reached that landmark.

9.2

Abdul Razzaq to Kallis, FOUR, confidently played, full, a meaty ball on middle and leg and is driven stylishly down the ground to beat mid-on to the ropes

9.3

Abdul Razzaq to Kallis, no run, turned the face a little too early there, was looking for the on-drive past mid-on, it held its line and took the leading edge, rolled towards extra cover

9.4

Abdul Razzaq to Kallis, no run, short of a good length outside off, cracked straight towards point

9.5

Abdul Razzaq to Kallis, FOUR, poor delivery on the leg stump, Kallis comes forward a couple of steps and clips it over short fine leg for an easy boundary, more a leg gully that, Akhtar's the man there

9.6

Abdul Razzaq to Kallis, no run, pitched up outside off, driven crisply but to mid-off

End of the first Powerplay and South Africa will be satisfied with where they are.Pakistan have taken the second Powerplay.

End of over 10 (9 runs) South Africa 50/1 (RR: 5.00)

Wahab Riaz to bowl now. Left-arm seamer, he's bowled pretty well this series

10.1

Wahab Riaz to Smith, 1 run, starts with a shortish delivery outside off, pulled towards deep square leg for a single

10.2

Dave: "@Guy: I hear you but if you remember, it was Parnell ability to bowl in the last overs that got him into the side until injury took him out. I think it's just fair that he reclaims his spot now that his good to go. Rusty is definitely a find but it doesn't mean that we should forget about Parnells aptitude"

Hafeez to bowl his offspinners now

11.1

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, strays on the pads from round the wicket, not much spin on that one, tickled towards short fine leg

11.2

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, back of a length on middle, gets on the back foot and punches it to midwicket

11.3

Mohammad Hafeez to Smith, no run, comes down the track but he holds his length back and bowls it flat, defended towards midwicket

11.5

Mohammad Hafeez to Kallis, 1 run, turns in from a good length outside off, punched wide of extra cover for an easy single

12.2

Wahab Riaz to Smith, 1 run, short outside off, slaps it straight to mid-on, misfield and they allow him a single, Shoaib Akhtar the culprit there

12.3

Wahab Riaz to Kallis, no run, bowls it on a good length on the off, defended from the crease into the off side

12.4

Wahab Riaz to Kallis, no run, shortish on the off, punched towards extra cover, no single again

12.5

Wahab Riaz to Kallis, 1 run, opted to play the pull off a ball that wasn't quite there for that shot, was bowled on a length and he got an inside edge onto his pads, a single in front of square leg

12.6

Wahab Riaz to Smith, no run, bouncer but a touch too high thinks Smith and opts out a shot, the umpire doesn't think so and it counts as a dot

Graeme: "Rusty's exclusion is evidence of the selectors not picking on the basis of the players available, but on the team mix they wish SA had (ie. 5 batsmen, 1 who can get through a few overs in a pinch, 1 wicket-keeper who bats, a number 7 'finisher' who gets through 8+ overs, 1 spinner and 3 quicks). But Boucher, Pollock, Klusener and Kallis' (bowling) are no more. But the best SA team now is 5 bowlers, (Kallis, Duminy if things go wrong) and 6 batsmen (including AB). That is the now."

Tobias from Germany: "I do agree with the selection of Miller and believe they've got the balance right! There are 4 main bowlers plus JP and Kallis to bowl 50 overs. That should be enough. It obviously is hard on Theron, but I guess they had to give Parnell a game too. Those two and Tsotsobe will be fighting it out for the third seamer position for the WC."

Afridi into the attack

The selection debate continues. Ed: "The problem with playing Miller is that you now need 20 overs from Botha / Duminy / Kallis. One would then think that Botha would have to bowl his full 10 even if he gets smashed. Kallis has been injured and you dont want to have to rely on him for 10 overs. The last 2 matches it has been death bowling that did cost (and almost cost) us the match. The inclusion of Miller as ONLY a "big hitter" is strange indeed, how often will a number 7 totally justify his place by batting alone?"

Shirsendu: "Well the thing to remember is that the world cup is in the sub-continent and you generally have to chase 300 - 350 irrespective of the bowlers you have. Secondly more often than not its the part time bowlers who come off as good as the main bowlers in these conditions. Hence playing with seven batsmen with atleast 1 or 2 who can bowl a bit is the way to go. I don't see Rusty being as great a talent as he is being made out to be. Just an accurate medium pacer who can be torn to shreds by a good batter which unfortunately Pak don't have." 300-350 is a very liberal estimate.

South Africa will think they have the upper hand at this stage. 54 came off the final five overs, with Botha doing the bulk of the damage. Pakistan pulled things back a few times this innings. They hit back after a strong start from Smith and Amla, dismissed Smith when he had built a threatening partnership with AB and got rid of Duminy and Miller in quick time just when South Africa were shaping up for a late assault. But they were let down by some poor fielding - dropped catches and missed run-outs -, an unconvincing yet steady hand by AB and a counterattack by Botha and Ingram towards the end. 1-2 down in the series, Pakistan will be under pressure to save this series. We'll see what they come up with in around 35 minutes from now. Join us then.
