Big picture

Followers of this series could easily think they've woken up in March, or even in 2010, when these two sides last met in five-ODI series. The result went South Africa's way in the first game, Pakistan's in the second and back to South Africa in the third. History would tell us it's Pakistan's turn again in the fourth, and they need a victory in Abu Dhabi to stay alive in the series.

South Africa, however, could break the pendulum swing of the score line because their batting has improved more than Pakistan's. On the Abu Dhabi pitch, which has proved the most conducive for run-scoring, South Africa seem to have an advantage but whether they have the temperament to make it count remains to be seen.

The two bowling attacks, who tore into opposing batting line-ups in the first two matches, were somewhat nullified by an unhelpful pitch in the third game. Pakistan were blunted more severely by batsmen who were willing to apply themselves. Mohammad Irfan still caused problems and Pakistan will need him and the spinners to be at their best to level the series.

South Africa will be happier but not entirely satisfied with the changes they made to their line-up. They will still demand more from the batsmen, especially as the bowlers cannot be asked to do much more. Should they win on Friday, it will be the first time South Africa would have won an ODI series before the final game since they blanked New Zealand 3-0 in 2011-12.

Form guide

Pakistan LWLWW (last five completed games, most recent first) South Africa WLWLL

Watch out for

Pakistan need more competent performances from their two Umars, Amin and Akmal, if they keep their places. Both batsmen have been guilty of needless soft dismissals - think Akmal handing Imran Tahir a return catch off a full toss - and Amin needs to tighten up outside his off stump. They need to make their adjustments quickly or the series could fall out of Pakistan's grasp.

South Africa's improvement with the bat in the third match included two of their batsmen getting half-centuries, and with the fourth fixture being played on the same placid surface in Abu Dhabi, they will be looking for someone to score a hundred. JP Duminy appears the likeliest candidate. As South Africa's top scorer from the previous match and the most comfortable batsman against the spinners, he may be the man to score the first century of the series.

Team news

Pakistan moved Mohammad Hafeez back to the top of the order for the third match and will probably keep him there with Ahmed Shehzad. With the middle order still a concern, it may be time to consider handing Sohaib Maqsood a debut and bringing in Sarfraz Ahmed as wicketkeeper. Wahab Riaz has been unsuccessful with the ball, and Junaid Khan could be a handy replacement.

Pakistan: 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Umar Amin/Sohaib Maqsood 4 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), 5 Asad Shafiq, 6 Umar Akmal/Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9 Wahab Riaz/Junaid Khan, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammad Irfan.

With Graeme Smith out of the series, Quinton de Kock will get another opportunity to open and will probably keep wicket as well, although AB de Villiers appears more suited to the task. Faf du Plessis seemed to prefer batting at No.3, so he should stay there with JP Duminy at No.4. Dale Steyn was clutching his hamstring and groin at various points in the third match and if there is a lingering niggle, he could make way for either Wayne Parnell or Vernon Philander, who has not played a match so far.

South Africa:1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 JP Duminy 5 AB de Villiers (capt), 6 David Miller, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Dale Steyn/Wayne Parnell/Vernon Philander, 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 11 Imran Tahir

Stats and trivia

  • AB de Villiers is 148 runs behind Jacques Kallis as South Africa's leading run-scorer in ODIs against Pakistan.

  • Shahid Afridi has played in more ODIs than anyone else in Abu Dhabi, with 19 appearances to date.

"It's the same old story. I think we need to think about our batting if we want to save the series. Our batsmen get starts but are not able to convert them into big scores, and we all have to think that 20s and 30s are not going to win matches for us."
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq

"Dale is a wonderful bowler. He's close to perfect. He brings in intensity to the team and he ups the pace of the game. He brings this intensity which is irreplaceable."
South Africa captain AB de Villiers

I think too much politics is destroying the PAK cricket. Hafeez and S Malik are gud only v/s IND/SL/BD that too in ASIA. Play him as bowler who can bat at 6/7/8. Let Afridi open where quick 30-40s can demoralize the opponents as anyway he slogging in lower middle order. Umar Akmal is PAK best batsman to arrive since MY/YK and they are destroying him by making him play at 6 instead of 3 or 4. Likewise Razzaq career is also destroyed by PAK admins by frequent droppings. Jamshed can be given some more chances to prove his capability. Ideal PAK line up should be 1. Jamshed 2. Afridi 3. Shehzad 4. U Akmal 5. Misbah 6/7. Hafeez/Razaq 8. Tanveer 9. Ajmal 10 Junaid 11. Irfan. Common guys what you say...

pakistani team is unperdictable so hope for the best

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 10:51 GMT)

At last , junaid khan plays......i think Misbah is the most intelligent man in this match

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 10:51 GMT)

Play with 8 established and 3 youngsters. So established and experienced players can guide youngsters. We don't have enough established batsman. We have Misbah with his own tech and he is doing good job with bat but at the same time we have other youngsters who are unable to copy Misbah. Misbah is damaging our batting line, he is not letting others play their natural game. Players must be free to play their own game.

No rocket science, Pakistan line up comprises of "average" quality batsmen and individuals fire on rare occasions. Pakistan desperately need few "world-class" batsmen. The youngsters/new inductions do not inspire confidence - THEY DON'T HAVE IT ! As for your caption, "Will the pendulum swing again ?", batting second/chasing (even a getable target), the answer is NO CHANCE. Only scenario for Pakistan to swing the pendulum is BAT FIRST- PUT UP +200 TOTAL & BACK BOWLERS TO DEFEND IT. Good luck Pakistan ( will needs lots of it).

Pendulum would swing for sure..Pak would win today & would lose the next game. It's so obvious. If i can predict the result of whole series.Pak is so famous for the their Drama. So sad but Pak would lose this series.. Don'y know why but i see a certain pattern when Pak plays in any Tournament.

Make or break today. Think this match will serve as a marker for the medium term of Pakistani cricket. Can they respond and turn unquestionable talent into a winning formula. My team for today: Jamshed, Shehzad, Shafiq, Misbah, Hafeez, Akmal, Afridi, Wahab, Ajmal, Junaid,Irfan. Time for Shehzad, Shafiq and Akmal to step up. The two spin bowling all rounders should concentrate on their bowling and inshallah one will have a good day with the bat. Riaz has to become our fast bowling allrounder...

we want Imran Nazir Ahmed Shehzad opning pair .......they shell rock the world...

pakistani batsmen are defending too much. I think they should play attacking and aggresive cricket

well, i think Pakistan team suffering from worst politics ever, senior thinks they are seniors and juniors think 'huh' seniors. now, its time to show responsibility by PCB which is running in no way like orphan without having chairman.

Friendly speaking, there is no place for umar akmal , umar amin for this one day tour but why they are getting in again n again. Someone seniors from PCB shouls also guide to young players like nasir jamshed , shahzad and Imran nazir that how to play in pressure. currently, I am enjoying watching indian cricket batting, that's it

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 9:56 GMT)

i don't understands that why junaid is not playing i think he is one of the best young fast bowler dangrous more than waha riaz or sohail tanveer and also his record is batter in 2013 and also against south africa today junaid should be in playing 11 and give a chance to sohaib maqsood also in middle order it will better for team pakistan and also gives a one more chance to akmal

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 9:34 GMT)

bring afridi as a captain i watched afridi as a captain doing good

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 9:33 GMT)

Umar akmal is a natural opener when he was playing in under 19 he was opening with ahmad shehzad so why not try him as an oppener or 1 down and bring back Abul Razzaq as an allrounder he can make quick runs and can take vital wickets

Posted by AltafPatel on (November 8, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

for last 4, I would have preferred Steyn, Parnel, Tsotsobe, and Tahir. Morne needs break and rest due to not performing as he is known for since SL tour. Parnel is in top form and deserves to continue the rhythm.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 9:20 GMT)

toss win match win. i cant understand these pitches and our players too, as u win the toss and bats first, the other team stats feeling that the half match has gone away particularly for pakistan. so praying for pakistan as well the toss. hahahaha. so my dear friends, just wait for the toss before u burn ur fingers. for those who does hedging, just start with south africa then come to pak, if pak wins the toss, and if south africa bats first, just put africa infront and sit quietly. thats it. no razaq playing for pak, so no hope for the come back.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 9:14 GMT)

I'm a South African but I think cricket worldwide needs Pakistan to play more games. There is never a dull moment and this game should not wander too far from the norm.

Pakistan team to win Misbah, Shahid, Misbah, Shahid, Misbah, Shahid, Misbah, Shahid, Misbah, Shahid, Misbah ...

Posted by oskhanz on (November 8, 2013, 9:07 GMT)

Guys what to do with the talent if it can't save a single match over the period of years...... I believe Younis should have been back and the best possible probables as of today could be Shahzad, Hafeez, Younis, Misbah, Asad, Umar Amin, Umar Akmal, Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid and Irfan. Umar Amin is in the team as an all rounder and should be fulfilling the role accordingly.

Posted by Sunilcecil on (November 8, 2013, 9:06 GMT)

Hafeez & Umar Akmal are both liabilities that need to be written off soon! Afridi is a bowler only, i think his reflexes are gone i never rated him as a batsman, he was more of a Reflex Tape Ball hitter. Ahmed Shahzad is more of a stay & play bats man can't score quick runs. so main point find 4 batsmen as replacements ASAP or these batters will never help you win next years world cup!

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 8:53 GMT)

I think so that Jamshed and Hafeez both should not play as an opener. Why dont we try U akmal as an opener. If Jamshed and Hafeez both cannot perform as an opener then there should be no issue to try U akmal

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 8:43 GMT)

@cricket_man Idk if you remember this, but Umer Akmal once batted at No. 3 against India in a t20 match and was bowled for a duck. He played 3 balls and was clue-less against the moving ball. He is a player who is good against the old ball. I however, agree with you thar he 's being wasted at No. 6 and i partly blame Misbah for this, he bats for 20 overs at a slow rate and expects others to cover up. This is one of the reason why i said in my prev post that he shld bat at No. 3. The earlier he comes in, the better it is.

SA's move of allowing Faf to bat at 3 was a brave and a sensible move. He was failing miserably against spin so sending him up the order wasn't such a bad move tbh as it allowed him to face a few overs of fast bowling till he got setteled. This isn't the case with Akmal as he prefers facing spin. No. 4 shld suit him well.

Posted by Cricket_Man on (November 8, 2013, 7:57 GMT)

@ Hameer Ali: I agree that promoting U. Akmal to number 3 would be a brave move, for some even wild. But I still think that he comes in to bat when Pakistan usually is in trouble. He is a "match maker" and not a "match saver" like Misbah. Positive teams always send in their match makers at top order not in the middle order. Talking about form, even Du Plessis was not in form a match ago but as South Africa is a positive side they sent him in at 3 and he became a completely new batsman. Just trust me on this one. I know Akmal's talent is being wasted when he can perform so well. Just give him a chance and I know Akmal will perform. No body has performed at 3 so far so why not try Akmal? Lets be brave for once and play this team in the exact same order : 1) Hafeez 2) Shehzad 3) U. Akmal 4) Misbah 5) Shafiq 6) Sohaib Maqsood 7) Amin 8) Afridi 9) Tanvir 10) Ajmal 11) Irfan.

Posted by fEdI.FHK on (November 8, 2013, 7:29 GMT)

I think pakistan team should learn the batting techniques from the Indian batting order.. its my personal opinion that the current indian batting order (i.e. dhawan, rohit, kohli, raina, dhoni, yuvi, ravi & still they got great talent in line) is the most outstanding, world class, 'amazing to watch' type, reliable (& whatever u say to praise) batting order among every team in the history of cricket.. im a pakistani but i love watching these indian players batting & thrashing the opposition bowling (although i will praise pak bowling more in an indopak match :D).. but sincerely indian batting order is lovely to watch & pakistan team, mgmt, coacheSSS & our captain should learn the batting strategies from them..

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 7:27 GMT)

It's the same old story..real talent is sitting out and oldies getting chances... shame on PCB and selectors.... can we really chase 200+ with this team ...? i dont think so

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 7:27 GMT)

Umer Akmal ar No. 3, are you freaking kidding me? Do you guys actually think that he'll be able to survive the new ball? I agree that he shld bat up the order, maybe at 4 or 5 but believ me, One down is not the position for him. Plus, he's out of form, he got out on a full toss for crying out loud! Do you really think he'll be able to face Dale Steyn with the new ball? If you ask me, the only player suited for the No. 3 spot is Misbah. Wether he bats at 5 or 4, we always see him at the crease by the 12 over, so why not bat at 3?

I agree that Hafeez shld bat down the order, i think that No. 6 wld be the best position for him.

Posted by ShaffKhan on (November 8, 2013, 7:25 GMT)

I think Pakistan must prepare opening pair which should be aggressive. Imran Nazir with Ahmed Shehzad and one down Jamshed would be a better option in my opinion. If Imran Nazir and Shehzad stays for 8-10 overs, just imagine what would be the result.

Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (November 8, 2013, 7:08 GMT)

Depends what Pakistani team you get on the day.

Posted by Fijicricket on (November 8, 2013, 6:58 GMT)

Hope Pakistan wont doctor the pitch so that a good entertaining game can be played.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 6:56 GMT)

please dont remove umar akmal give him one more chance....

Posted by Cricket_Man on (November 8, 2013, 6:56 GMT)

Umar Amin is a player with talent but he needs to be developed like Ravi Jadeja of India. Jadeja wasn't impressive when he first came, neither with the bat nor with the ball. But with Dhoni's management he has turned out to become a real asset for India. Amin can develop into something similar. Yes, he is a medium pacer but he bowled well in England and even with his slow pace he can still be a good enough bowler if he bowls cleverly like Sammy. Umar Akmal should not force his shots towards the off side (especially in the power play overs) as he is a naturally gifted leg side player. George Bailey from Australia is a strong on side player and plays most of his shots on the on side. Akmal should learn from Bailey in this regard.

Posted by Cricket_Man on (November 8, 2013, 6:41 GMT)

Pakistan should play with the following line up in the exact same order in the next match and I guarantee they will win the match 1) Hafeez 2) Shehzad 3) U. Akmal 4) Misbah 5) Shafiq 6) Sohaib Maqsood 7) Amin 8) Afridi 9) Tanvir 10) Ajmal 11) Irfan.

Wahab only bowls 3 or 4 overs and his overs are not much needed as the main 2 fast bowlers and 3 spinners are usually enough. Amin should be retained but as an allrounder and should be kept in the late middle order (no. 7) for further stability in batting. Umar Akmal needs to bat at 3 as I will always believe that he is the best batsman in the team. These days his problem is not that he lacks responsibility but that he lacks confidence. Like Du Plessis give Akmal a go at no. 3 and you will see the difference. Maqsood can really bat well at 6 as he can rotate the strike as well as do the power hitting required in later overs. Please please post Cricinfo and please play this team Misbah, please !!!

Posted by bbmm on (November 8, 2013, 6:37 GMT)

Salectors should give another chance to Imran Nazir he will make a wonderfull opning pair with Shahzad if Rohit Sharma can prove himself in 100 matches Nazir will do it to he is even more talented ...

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 6:33 GMT)

I wish Muhammad Yusuf and Abdur Razzaq come back in the team.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 6:27 GMT)

I don't know why people are just criticizing Shahid Afridi. He said in a interview after 1st ODI that it's not Shahid Afridi vs SA, it's Pak vs SA. Wahab Riaz and Hafeez are not performing with the bat and bowl as well. Umar Amin is not performing with the bat as well. Why don't they consider dropping them first? Afridi took 8 Wickets in 3 ODIs and people are asking to drop them. I think that's ridiculous! My Playing XI: Shahzad, Afridi, Shafiq, Misbah, Maqsood, Akmal, Hafeez, Rehman, Ajmal, Junaid, Irfan. They'll have 5 Specialist batsman and 2 Pinch hitters and 4 Spinners and 2 Fast bowlers.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 6:09 GMT)

Ofcourse it will...

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 5:55 GMT)

I like to see AB in the field! Bravo for that change. Save your back captain, we need you!

Posted by highveldhillbilly on (November 8, 2013, 5:21 GMT)

The SA batting line up is brittle and the tail is too long. The match on Wednesday would be be very different if JP or AB had gotten out early.

Posted by drnaveed on (November 8, 2013, 5:10 GMT)

''same old story'' also , as far as the team selection is concerned.we don't need players like nasir jamshed , umar ameen ,sarfaraz ahmed ,wahab riaz ,sohail tanveer , to name a few. i agree with @ mohammad ishtiaq's selected team here, infact, this is the same team , which i had selected earlier for the second one day match ,the difference is in the batting order only .asad shafiq should open the innings along with ahmed shehzad ,with umar akmal at number 3 .they should try to play their natural attacking game ,misbah at number 4 ,m.hafeez should come in at number 5, so he will not have to face steyn straight away. followed by maqsood ,amin ,afridi ,ajmal , junaid , and m.irfan. 3 spinners should bowl their alloted overs ,plus the 2 fast bowlers and ameen to bowl only if required.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 4:40 GMT)

i think d x-factor for pakistan batting will come if they send afridi to open up the innings....he has been successful there and if he clicks then its great for pakistan

Posted by romirom on (November 8, 2013, 4:25 GMT)

i heared that maqsood is going to debute in 4th odi. Is that true?

Posted by ajasp on (November 8, 2013, 4:05 GMT)

Hafeez should be dropped as his batting glimpses are exacerbated by his poor form and we don't need him as a spinner as Afridi is already performing.... we need a specialist batsman like Maqsood.

My playing XI: 1. A Shehzad 2. N Jamshed 3. Umar Akmal 4. M ulhaq 5. Asad Shafiq 6. Umar Amin 7. S Maqsood 8. S Afridi 9. S Ajmal 10. J Khan 11. M Irfan

Posted by ReverseSweepIndia on (November 8, 2013, 3:12 GMT)

What if you drop Afridi from the XI, Hafeez is quite capable to finish his 10 overs. He is slightly less in bowling than Afridi, but better in batting at #7 than him. You guys need depth in batting and Afridi at #7 does not provide it. Its ironic that we Indians always score even 300-350+ and still not feel safe about defending and while chasing expect them to chase that much every time. And you guys having even the best of bowlers, who are time & again let down by spineless batting. They will restrict side within 200 and still batting will blow it off. Coming back to my earlier statement, removing Afridi from the XI will give side more balance in batting. You can drop a fast bowler to make way for extra batsman but why you will play around with your strength. You can remove Ajmal, but then that's like removing Kohli from Indian lineup. Being best in his trade Ajmal is first name in XI, so only one left is Afridi. Difficult choice but series is on stake..

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 3:09 GMT)

my pak Xi will be as 1. Shan Maqsood 2. Ahmad Shahzad 3. Nasir Jamshed 4. Asad Shafeeq 5. Misbah 6. Umar akmal 7. M Hafeez 8. S Afridi 9. Saeed Ajmal 10. M Irfan 11. Junaid Khan

Posted by TheHasan on (November 8, 2013, 3:08 GMT)

I think Misbah is missing the trick by dropping Jamshed and not picking Abdur Rehman. Jamshed I think is the most stylish left hand bat for Pakistan after The Great Saeed Anwar and he should be given more chances. Apart from Jamshed, on a wicket which favors spin bowling, what is the need of third pacer...??? Abdur Rehman could be very effective. And lastly, Hafeez should play at no. 6. So, my playing eleven are as follows: Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Misbah Ul Haq, Asad Shafiq, Mohammed Hafeez, Shahid Afridi, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Mohammed Irfan.

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 1:25 GMT)

should play junaid khan if we are to win

Posted by   on (November 8, 2013, 1:23 GMT)

There are too many people in this team who do not deserve their place. Most of the domestic performers are not getting proper chances. I have been watching domestic season for the last three years and this would be my playing X for the next series:

- Ahmed Shahzad - Zain Abbas/Sharjeel Khan - Umer Akmal - Misbah-ul Huq - Asad Shafiq - Shoaib Maqsood - Shahid Afridi -Sohail Tanvir/Abdul Razzaq - Saeed Ajmal - Junaid Khan - Muhammad Irfan

Keep these players in reserve:

- Manzoor Amjad, Umer Amin, Fawad Alam, Sadaf Hussain, Muhammad Hafeez

In ODI cricket, you need people who can play attacking cricket and have a solid defence if needed and both Sharjeel Khan and Shoaib Maqsood can do that. They have an average of over 50 and strike rate of close to 100 in domestic cricket. Shoaib can also do part time leg spin.

There is no place for the likes of Hafeez, Umer Amin and Wahab Riaz in the team.

I think one thing is clear we defo need an extra batsman in our team,my team would b 1 Shazad 2 Haffeez 3 Misbah 4 U.Akmal 5 Shafiq 6 Maqsood 7 Amin 8 Afridi 9 Ajmal 10 junaid 11 Irfan. This would give us strenght in depth in bating with Afridi as low as 8 and 3 spin bowlers and 2 quality pacers Amin can bowl few ovrz as 6th option if required...Av pickd team from availiable squad..Pls comment..

Whatever the outcome of game , I Love Pakistan Bowling Department LOL and batting too LOL

I think Misbah is a really good captain. the Pakistan squad for the 4th odi should be :

Ahmed,Hafeez,Umar Akmal,Misbah, Razzaq, Afridi, Gul, Ajmal, Irfan,Rehman , Junaid

If Pakistan play with this squad they will win the match again

Posted by Crick_Expert on (November 7, 2013, 22:34 GMT)

PCB should hire Sarjeel Khan, Abdul Razzak, Awais Zia, Shoaib Maqsood, Shan Massood, Hamad Azam for ODI.

PAK TEAM should get rid off from following players who couldn't improve batting since the last couple of years. 1)Asad Safiq, 2)Mr. tuktuk/Misbah 3) Sohail Tanvir 4)Umar Akmal/Amin: I don't know why PCB continue giving them chance.??

Posted by PakWinWorldCupxXx on (November 7, 2013, 22:30 GMT)

agh, let me tell PCB, and Misbah and Hafeez! Pakistan need to bring Abdul Razzaq and Imran Nazzir back! these two can always bring Pakistan to victory then Afridi! Afridi lofts and goes to the pavillion! but abdul razzaq can do it! just like he did once, his 109 against SA when we were totally losing! And offcourse Imran Nazzir! the opening pair should be Imran Nazzir and Ahmad Shahzad! and 3rd should be hafeez! drop jamshed! GIVE JAMSHED REST! AND LET HIM PRACTICE! PLS! if someone hits centuries in row doesn't mean they are still in form after 3-4 months! pls bring both these players back especially in World Cup 2014 T20, and World Cup 2015 ODI, or Pakistan won't be able to repeat their victory like they did back in 2009!!!!!! pls pls pls

Posted by Crick_Expert on (November 7, 2013, 22:18 GMT)

1)Hafeez 2)Ahmed S. 3)Shoaib Maqsood 4)Nasir J. 5)Umar A(WKT) 6)Umar A. 7)AFRIDI(CAPT) 8)Ajmal 9)Junaid 10)Wahab 11)Irfan

Sorry no place for Mr. tuktuk/Misbah and Asad Safiq.

Most of Pakistani fans are suggesting that Pakistan must play aggressive cricket and Misbah is not aggressive enough. CAn anyone explain what do they mean by aggression ? Is it body language ? Or they want their batsmen to swing the bat at every ball ?? Afridi is doing excatly same what is the result ??? Pakistani batsmen are falling like house of cards while playing defensively, what will happen if they play aggressively ? The fact is this that Pakistan just doesn't have capable batsmen and Misbah is the only one who has international class and he is the most criticized !!! The only way Pakistan win is batting first and somehow managing 230 or so runs.

Posted by Dannymania on (November 7, 2013, 22:06 GMT)

Our team will NOT do well until Misbah ul Haq is dropped.Just bear with me while i present my case to tell why i'm saying that. Misbah ul Haq is ok as a batsman, he is defensive as a captain but thats fine with me too. There are a couple of problems with him playing as a captain though. 1: He has a major say in the selection of the team which is not fair because he isnt a selector. He lets go of that and a major problem will be solved. 2: Misbah controls the way pakistanis bat. He "Tells" them continuously how to bat and that affects the pakistani batting line up because most of the pakistani batsmen are attacking from their very nature. When Misbah tells them to play with concentration and patience, it works against their nature and the poor souls get out cheaply. I'm a huge cricket fan and i think our team will be fine after Misbah Ul Haq retires and some other captain comes along who's a little attacking.Pakistan has a history of producing cricketing legends with attacking captains.

Somebody please Tell Misbah to Get Wahab out of the team and get Umir Amin out as well, they haven't justified the opportunities then have got, time to give replace them with Junid and Shoaib, if he wants to win the match to level the series, i am happy with the other spots as of now in the team.

Posted by mattandy on (November 7, 2013, 21:38 GMT)

Frankly, With all fairness, Misbah is right!!! He can not win by only his own performance. All Other selfish batsmen were playing like a club cricketer. They need to have a player like Bangla's Nasir Hussein, who is a true winner when the chips are down. Abdul Razzak is in the same category. These guys put aside their personal achievements and win the game for their respective countries. Other than Misbah and some extent Shahid Afridi(Since he claims to be a bowler than a batter and he is doing a great job in that area) none of the socalled front line batters are doing their Patriotic duty at all. That is shame!!!! Look at my team, even Tsotsobe and morkel batted more responsibly and consistently than Pak frontliners!!!!!! Go SA, Go!!!

If Pakistan would like to competitive in ODI cricket then their board should get domestic players whose career average must be 40+ and their strike rate must be 80+. Pakistan cannot just rely on their bowling.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 20:19 GMT)

Pakistan will win ONLY if they BAT first.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 20:18 GMT)

Pakistan's batting performance so far

Ahmed shehzad 148, Misbah 75, Hafeez 69 , wahab 51 Amin 47 Akmal 43 tanvir 42 afridi 41 Asad 11 ( 1 game) Nasir 1 ( 2 games )

Point to be noted is no9 wahab is 4th on the list and no 8 tanvir is just marginally behind Akmal.

Posted by t20cric on (November 7, 2013, 20:12 GMT)

I dont think its a good idea to drop Hafeez from the team. His bowling was only bad once in this series. He should be dropped to 6 or 7 where he can be even better then Wahab and Tanvir as a lower order batsman. Pakistan need to bring in Sohaib Maqsood and Junaid Khan inthe team to improve the batting and bowling. I dont understand y Shafiq needs to be dropped only after 1 ODI.

My XI: 1.Ahmed Shehzad, 2.Asad Shafiq, 3.Umar Akmal, 4.Sohaib Maqsood, 5.Misbah-ul-haq, 6.Umar Amin, 7.Mohammad Hafeez, 8.Shahid Afridi, 9.Junaid Khan, 10.Saeed Ajmal, 11.Mohammad Irfan

If in the future Pakistan want 3 pacers then it should be Mohammad Irfan, Abdul Razzaq and Hammad Azam/Anwar Ali. This way Razzaq can groom one of these to become all rounders so that when he retires then it can be Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Amir/Junaid Khan, Anwar Ali/Hammad Azam

Posted by TexanBlue on (November 7, 2013, 20:10 GMT)

Pak need to balance their team and put each player at his right place. Umar Akmal's batting has been affecting only because of the extra keeping duties. Play the regular keeper and put Akmal at #3. Open with Hafeez and Shahzad and bring back Younus at 4 to bring stability back in the batting order and to share the burden with Misbah who can continue at 5. If Razzaq had to be called back he should have been included in the ODIs as well and put him in at #6. Afridi can come at 7 with Sarfraz at 8. The remaining 3 will be Ajmal, Junaid and Irfan. It's surprising to see Junaid being kept out despite being the 3rd highest wicket taker this year. Best team combo for 4th ODI will be Hafeez, Shahzad, Akmal, Asad, Misbah, Sohaib, Afridi, Sarfraz, Ajmal, Junaid and Irfan. Younus is willing to play in ODIs so bring him back because Amin is nowhere a better batsman than him. Our mediocre batting has made some of the very pathetic RSA bowlers look dangerous. Bring back the Pak passion and play hard

Posted by t20cric on (November 7, 2013, 20:00 GMT)

If Misbah makes some intelligent decisions then we can win this one. Remember the series in SA where in the first 4 matches Pakistan batted 2nd and we won 2 out of them. We can chase sometimes but the mind set is wrong. Ahmed's 32 yesterday was probably better then his previous 58s. He played positive, attacking cricket. It looked like he was playing his natural game. We need everyone to play their natural game and the slower batsmen(Misbah & Asad) need to rotate strike. Pakistan need to get a 50 opening stand and one of their openers should last til the team gets to about 70-80. Pakistan need to build many partnerships of 20-30+ and 2 or 3 big ones of 60-70+. Pak should make sure they dont lose 2-3 wickets in quick succession. They can slow down a bit for a few balls after a wickets falls but losing more wickets is dangerous. I dont understand the comments saying Pak dont need 5 bowlers. U have to have atleast 5 bowlers in t20s and ODIs cuz of the bowling quota.

Posted by PureProteas49 on (November 7, 2013, 19:20 GMT)

LOL, reading these comments is classic, you guys actually think you can win this series, shame, sorry for you

Posted by cricket987 on (November 7, 2013, 19:14 GMT)

Pakistan need to play aggressively and built strong batting partnerships, i think umar amin should get another go at the top of the order and i feel hafeez should be at number 5 with asad safiq opening alongside ahmed shezad. we shouldn't keep on changing around the team there should be FAITH in the team as i believe there still valub;e time left for one of these players to make a name for themselves and this is the time to show the world why we love pakistan cricket! COME ON PAKISTAN WE WANT YOU TO WIN!!

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 19:14 GMT)

I agree with most people on here. If one of Afridi or Hafeez should be dropped, it has to be Hafeez because Boom Boom despite not batting well he has bowled brilliant in the series so far, very economical and has taken important wickets. Hafeez's priority should be batting and he hasn't delivered so should be kicked out.

My team would be: Despite Jamshed out of form give him another chance, Jamshed, Shezhad, U.Akmal, Misbah, Amin, Shafiq, Maqsood, Afridi, Ajmal, Junaid and Irfan. Also Hummad Azam should be in squad, very talented player and has really been given very few chances to impress.

Insha Allah we will win tomorrow, batsmen need to performance for once and if not when will they ever.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 19:02 GMT)

I liked what shoaib akhtar commented after the game. tell the players to perform in a series. if they do they get a spot if they dont just send them back. Let the series finish and then take all the records and decide who to blame and who not to. I would say indeed wahab and ranvir game away runs but they did batted better than everyone else. everyone got out cheaply but they certainly played accordingly and played how the rest of the team should have batted. it will be sarcastic if they bat up the order at 4 5 or 6

Posted by Shazy777 on (November 7, 2013, 18:42 GMT)

pak win when hafeez drop from team... last match 6 ov 45 runs... in batting 15(31).... plz drop hafeez from team... S.a won easily my playing X1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 JP Duminy 5 AB de Villiers (capt), 6 David Miller, 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Wayne Parnell , 9 Morne Morkel, 10 Dale Steyn, 11 Imran Tahir

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 18:21 GMT)

I think wahab should be replaced by abdul rehman and drop afridi to bring shoaib maqsood...

Posted by Omarrz on (November 7, 2013, 17:31 GMT)

Bring in Rehman for Wahab. Spin them out or atleast restrict them. Doesn't matter who play as batsmen; they all will fail! The only way to win the game is by adding one more spinner and restrict them for below 200. Rehman is just as good may be better batsman than Wahab.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 17:15 GMT)

Tariq butt , you thinking straight? with playing 4 bowlers and 2 useless batsmen Afridi and Hafeez? that gives u 5 batsmen (including wicket keeper) either kick hafeez and afridi and bring some good batsmen or play afridi and kick tanvir if u want to see some score. with hafeez this team wil never go anywhere.

Posted by Sports4Youth on (November 7, 2013, 17:15 GMT)

No. I dont think that they deserve to swing the pendulum. The world except Misbah knows that Batting is Pakistan's weakness. And Capt.Cool wants to play an extra bowler instead of playing an extra batsman.

What has been WAHAB RIAZ's role in the 3 games he has played thus far. Ironically in the two games where he bowled 5 overs, Pakistan lost both those games. And only on the 2nd ODI when he bowled only 2 overs Pakistan won. In all games he has been way too expensive. . It has been ages since he completed his 10 overs in game. WHY DO YOU WANT HIM IN THE TEAM? WHAT IS HIS ROLE? WHY WASTE ONE SPOT?

Posted by ispaewbi on (November 7, 2013, 17:12 GMT)

We need a more aggressive Captain, I'm sick and tired of Misbah's defensive old approach. He is calm and collective sure but he is not a finisher and that's what hurting us the most.

Posted by mzm149 on (November 7, 2013, 16:57 GMT)

@Faizan Khan: Its not just responsibility of Ahmed Shehzad to score. There were other batsman too. If Wahab and Tanvir can stay on the wicket so long and play their shots, why not Hafeez, Umar Amin, Misbah, Asad and Afridi. If anyone of them performed, he would have become hero and simply undroppable for at least next six months. Hafeez should be blamed but the others I mentioned above are equally responsible.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 16:56 GMT)

There is no place for Hafeez or Afridi, gotta play one of them. Afridi batting is very unreliable so I will say play Afridi and treat him as bowler. So for Bowling we have Ajmal,Afridi, Irfan and Junaid. 4 specialist bowlers. Kick Hafeez out of the team, He is not capable of batting and we can't be playing a 5th bowler. Open with Shezad/Afridi or someone other batsmen. 1st down Misbah ( tell him to rotate strike take singles or get the hell out of the team). 2nd down omeone new Shoaib maqsood/Khurram manzoor. 3rd Umar Akmal ( tell him to play sensibly make 60/80 run or get the hell out) 4th Haris shoail/Hammad Azam. 5th new batsmen young gen. AFridi,Ajmal,Irfan,Junaid.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 16:48 GMT)

Here is the team if Misbah can think straight: A.Shezad-Hafeez-A-Shafiq-U.Akmal-Misbah-Sohaib-Afridi-Tanvir-Ajmal-Junaid-Irfan

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 16:44 GMT)

there should be a right arm fast who can pump up to 145 km/h ...and Hafeez should be given some rest now

Posted by applethief on (November 7, 2013, 16:37 GMT)

Plan for AB de Villiers:

Win toss - bat - win Lose toss - get sent in to bat - win Lose toss - get sent to bowl - *probably* win

Never seen a team so inept at chasing. South Africa should feel comfortable with 130 on the board - Pakistan will find a way to get themselves out for 90. The batting is so bad we should just pick 10 specialist bowlers and a wicket keeper

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 16:32 GMT)

drop amin and play kamran or razzaq bring afridi at 4.junaid shd be in playing 11 replacing wahab

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 16:07 GMT)

The turning point in yesterday's game was Ahmed Shahzad's wicket, if he stayed there for 10 more overs, the game would have been over. Those were the most classic 32 runs i have even seen, he was absolutely crushing the ball, just like the way he usually plays. The problem came with Hafeez, who has learnt nothing and gave pressure to Shahzad. Hafeez should either be dropped or demoted down the order. Open with Shahzad and U.Akmal, Shoaib Maqsood, Asad Shafiq, Umar Amin (last chance), Misbah-ul-haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Sohail Tanvir, Junaid Khan, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan.

There is no quality in Pakistani cricket, weak domestic structure , dead wickets , awful grounds , no discipline , these are all reasons that we get big time humiliation in cricket world . Shahid Afridi is known as a "ALL ROUNDER" does he knows what is the right definition of a all rounder is ? Shahid Afridi is no way near to be called as an all rounder , he is not a match to SHANE WATSON OR JAQUES KALLIS , these two guys are true all rounder who are fit for all 3 formats and they performs so good for their countries . Afridi is playing for last 15 or 16 years but still do not know the basics of the cricket he is a complete fluke . We need a complete all rounder who can serve in all 3 formates and I think in whole domestic cricket we do not have the single all rounder thats why I called pakistan cricket a weak cricket playing nation. Sohail Tanveer is another a waste he do not know what he is doing but he is still in one day or t-20 formate which is ridiculous .

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:50 GMT)

the most frustrating thing about misbah's captaincy is, he does not take any risk he does not experiment. why cant he send some pinch hitter up the order maybe tell umar akmal to open the innings or something different its the same story every match and it is the same result

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:50 GMT)

@mzm149: bro selectors will not give this favor. :) many of us were happy when they dropped kamran, farhat and malik after CT. farhat got selected for ZIM. malik now. and may be kamran is just weeks away from being selected again. thats how our cricket is .

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:43 GMT)

Based on the recent Pak batting performance, Wahab and Tanvir should open (Left hand right hand combination) and Afridi should bad at #11 because he is worst than Ajmal and Irfan. Hence pak starts winning lol.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:36 GMT)

hafeez tries to fetch the ball. moreover he is more comfortable against the older, softer ball. with the kind of field restrictions and rules in ODIs if he is allowed to bat at no.6,pakistan can score around 80-100 runs in the last 10 overs if he forms a good partnership.

Team has full of fear to run chase in positive attitude, Take a example of Indian even Bangladeshi team.

How was Afridi in Wasim Akram Era....Because full authority of playing in 11 if out on Zero. Pakistan has wasted such great talent such as Umar Akmal. This player can only worth to Bat No-3 OR Opening though if he failed in 10 games. Many cricketing Pandit gave assurance about his talent so there is worth to build his confidence. Now, Every Batsman are batting for their spot that's fearing mentality caused badly on Batting collapse.

I had never seen such attitude of Pakistan team because As a Indian, I love to see their fighting spirit on the field but Now No more !

Please do not waste such aggressive positive player like - Ahmad Shazad/Umar Akmal and Many more in domestic circuit.

Posted by AceK on (November 7, 2013, 15:15 GMT)

Seriously? Can anyone in the Pakistan team even bat? Talk about selecting players with talent? If the tail ender's can bat and make 30 odd and continuously your main batsmen keep failing then clearly 'you are not talented'. You know what I'm not a great batsman but if I get as many chances as these players do surely I'll score in a one game cause thats the day the opposition doesn't ball well and its my day ! And that is the case with our players they've all had their odd one or two good innings but if you are not consistent that that was a fluke my friend !! The days when we had Inzamam your hear heart knew he will bat and he will score or even win the game for you. Now a days I think I speak for all of us we have our heart in our mouth as soon as Pakistan comes to bat thanking God 'oh he survived the ball' lol.

If anyone in the selectors had a brain cell that worked they would have never dropped Razzak and he should have still been in the team. Get Razzak in ODI's Now !!!!

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:13 GMT)

WC 2015 is around the corner and we cant even get our batting order right your best player has to bat at number 3 so i say give that spot to umar akmal 1 hafeez 2 shazad 3 akmal. 4 sohaib maqsood 5 misbah 6 shafiq 7 afridi 8 tanvir 9ajmal10j khan 11irfan

Well all these things being said again and again, but nothing comes out from this pakistan team.I am not a regular follower of pakistan team, but i do watch them at times, and i believe this team has got that ability in them.Shehsad is a quality stroke maker, umar akmal and asad shefiq are gifted players and pakistan has the experience of misbah and hafeez. Bowling looks good with junaid, irfan, wahab and ajmal. Be patient with this unit, with regular exposure they will get better and better.Remember they are going through a difficult era ,not only in cricket but overall.Credit to this team that they still won matches against Eng3-0,Ind2-1,WI3-1,if any other team in this world were in similar situation wouldnt have come up with such performaces.Only worried with two sights-Afridi being cheered by fans everytime when he walks out to bat and Misbah being booed for teams poor performance.Dear Pakistanis, forget the good old days, live in present,be with ur team..they need u BADLY...

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 15:07 GMT)

I think pak should open with umar akmal and shezad ! There are 2 agressive openers! Moreover play hafeez at 6, and give a chance to sohaib maqsood instead of amin!

Can the selectors do the ntire nation a favor by not selecting Sarfraz again. Thank you!

Posted by SurlyCynic on (November 7, 2013, 14:56 GMT)

If Steyn has a niggle then rest him and bring back Parnell, which will also strengthen the batting. There is a long Summer ahead and Steyn doesn't need to get a more serious injury.

It's interesting how Tahir has become such a key bowler. Before the series started, when some of us questioned why Peterson was selected for the first test, the comments from Pak fans were 'we have hundreds of better spinners in Pakistan', 'Tahir was a failure here', 'Pak batsmen will dominate him', etc etc. Now after he helped win the 2nd test and took vital wickets in the ODIs the comments changed to 'we don't mind losing to another Pakistani' and 'there were 12 Pakistan players on the field'!

Quite amusing. A bit like when KP scores runs against SA.

I think we should play Nasir Jamshed at number 3. He has already played at this position in t20s and performed well.

Asad Shafiq should play next two games so that his supporters should not cry that he didnt get entire series.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 14:05 GMT)

asad deserves a chance. nasir is out of form for past many games so he should not be in playing 11.

umar amin should be replaced with maqsood. 1 of wahab or tanvir should give way to junaid. or sarfraz if they want to free umar akmal from keeping.

maqsood deserves a chance.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:58 GMT)

They should include 1-2 all-rounders like Razzaq. He should play at 6-7

Posted by manii-ji on (November 7, 2013, 13:54 GMT)

If they wants to win tomorrow then the line up should be

1.Ahmed Shehzad 2.Shahid Afridi 3.Asad Shafiq 4.Umar Akmal 5.Sohaib Maqsood 6.Misbah-ul-haq 7.Mohammad Hafeez 8.Sohail Tanvir/Abdur Rehman 9.Saeed Ajmal 10.Junaid Khan 11.Mohammad Irfan

Then pak will 100 %

The selectors just add players without looking at their performances. We have very talented players in pakistan who doesn't get a chance to play such as sharjeel khan, babar azam, sadaf hussain, aqeel anjum and many more good players so why not give them a chance, instead of our current players who always fail to performe and they are keep being selected over and over again.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:53 GMT)

i think nasir was dropped on basis of performance in past. he was out of form and justified.

about umar amin , to me it remains a strange thing why he is been termed as very talented and even future captain. and i dont know how he makes to playing 11 all the time.

maqsood should come in for umar amin. i dont agree with the article that akmal should be replaced with sarfraz. sarfraz is good keeper but poor batsman. though umar is also not scoring but keeping well.

wahab has been top scorer in last match. if he is playing as batsman then they can include full batsman instead of him. his role is queationable. his bowling and batting both not that much good to be called as all rounder. however, the state our batting is at moment, junaid should come in for sohail and wahab stays in . they will not make this many changes. may ve maqsood in but nothing else.

toss will be important for pak. & its same pitch so it will be a bit slow this time.

Posted by ICCexpert.... on (November 7, 2013, 13:52 GMT)

Umar Amin has been given so many chances, in tests and in one dayers but he never performed, so why is he still in the team ?

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:50 GMT)

If pakistan win toss and bat first, I believe they can defend 220 on this pitch, but if they lose the toss and have to chase, then we can kiss this series goodbye

Posted by mattandy on (November 7, 2013, 13:50 GMT)

Well!Well!Well!! Pak Batting is completely undone!!! These Club cricket standard batters will destroy Pak. Other than Misbah who i think, unlike some Pak fans, is definately saving Pak from humilating defeats, nobody out there are playing sensible cricket. Ahmed Shahjad is way more consistent than untalented overweight Jamshed(by the way, his fielding is probably worse than a club cricketer), Stein Bunny Hafiz should not be representing his country( true club cricketer) and Suhail Tanvir should be a spinner instead!!! Umer Akmal is a talent and Pak selectors are messing him up!!! Abdul Razzak should be in for Hafiz because he is a lot better batter than Hafiz ever be and better bowler than Hafiz. Without Misbah Pak is nothing, Period!!!!

Posted by ICCexpert.... on (November 7, 2013, 13:47 GMT)

Umar Amin needs to be dropped and Sohaib Maqsood should be included.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:45 GMT)

@atif: i do agree with basics of your comnent but the example you gave is not correct. misbahs strike rate was more than umar amin during that partnership. it has nothing to do with misbahs strike rate like you said.

My Pak team for this match: Shahzad, Hafeez, Sohaib Maqsood, Misbah, Asad, Umar, Afridi, Tanvir, Ajmal, Junaid, Irfan. Your comments please.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:42 GMT)

Here we go again with calls to drop Asad Shafiq, and give Umar Akmal a spot higher up the order. He has not learned his lessons in almost four years, do you expect him to do so now? Asad needs an extended run, not in and out like he has been. We should go in with seven batsmen, with Afridi coming it an #eight. Give this combination a try: Shehzad, Hafeez, Nasir, Asad, Misbah, Sohaib, (Akmal or Amin - last chance for both), Sarfraz, Afridi, Ajmal, Junaid and Irfan.

Posted by   on (November 7, 2013, 13:23 GMT)

Pakistan team have problem with defensive and slow approach. Once misbah starts his normal tuk tuk, this forces the batsman on the other end under Scoreboard pressure and make himself out, like Amin in 3rd ODI. I wonder what will happen if another batsman joins misbah and start making tuk tuk - what will misbah do then ?

Posted by Major85D on (November 7, 2013, 13:21 GMT)

It doesn´t matter who is playing for pakistan or not. as long as whatmore is coach and misbah is captain, they will never perform well. misbah is almost 40 years old, he looks for himself. if he doesn´t score well, he is out. so he wants to be the match winner in every game. yes he is the leading run scorer, but were are the results? he can not lead the team, time to say goodby mr tuk tuk.

Posted by Stark62 on (November 7, 2013, 13:19 GMT)

The solution is simple: demote Hafeez to no. 6, promote U. Akmal to no. 3/4, bring back Jamshed for Shafiq and play Maqsood at no. 5, instead of Amin.

Bringing back Junad Khan is a no-brainer but it should be for Tanvir and not Riaz.

Although knowing Misbah, I see Shafiq being promoted to no. 3, Riaz being dropped for Junaid and maybe, Maqsood might come in for Amin.

Posted by Pak_Guru on (November 7, 2013, 13:15 GMT)

Looks unlikely that Team Pak will win even one of the remaining 2 ODI's. Amin is a big disappointment, its funny he defends over pitch deliveries on batting friendly wickets. Spineless batting unit, as i had earlier mentioned even Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin from the Team India display more character, courage and wide range of shorts than this team's specialist batters. And to top it off, lazy fielders consistently give minimum 15 to 20 extra runs each match. Hope Whatmore/ Misbah and team read this. Sheer disappointment for the fans.

Nasir Jamshed is crucial to any ODI win. The second time he got caught out was by an incredible catch but someone took the idiotic decision to remove him.

Umar Akmal shouldnt be allowed to play when he gets out due to irresponsible shots. Remove him in the next game so he learns everytime.

Junaid Khan out of the playing eleven is criminal. Wahab Riaz is not worthy of playing a match for Pakistan, he has everything except "it." Sohail Tanvirs heydays are over, in the bowling dept Pak has many replacements.

Umar Amin, try him properly and clear his case once and for all, we dont want it to be Shoaib Malik type 1000 comebacks. Haris Sohail is missed big time.

All pak have to do is groom new batters.

The combination of including two allrounders who do not perform with the bat namely Hafeez & Afridi makes no sense. If they are to be included because of their bowling and future captaincy then keep them in two different formats, Hafeez in ODI and Afridi in T20, not both at once
