Pakistan v South Africa ODI Series - 5th ODI

Pakistan v South Africa

South Africa won by 117 runs

So Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock walk out to fae the music, with Irfan to bowl

4.25pm: Just five minutes from the start of the game. Who do you think will win between Pakistan and South Africa?

Utsav Batra: "I think pakistan should start with hafeez against the left handed De Kock specially considering his ability to move the ball away from left handers !!!!"

Nazar Waheed: "While my heart is sinking with the Pakistan's performance i see a spark in Sohaib Maqsood. What a knock he played the other day. The power, stance, middling the bat, confidence, no fear !! Bravo and best of luck"

Meghani: "Hafeez should be dropped in place of umer amin will be a better 11 for pakistan"

Ali: "Many people over here are blaming Misbah for his defensive captaincy and batting however I believe all Misbah needs is confidence at the other end. When Maqsood was batting Misbah also started playing strokes because he trusted Maqsood. Misbah does not play attacking shots because he does not trust anyone at the other end so in the end it is not actually Misbah's fault. If the batsman at the other end play well he will not be too defensive either."

AAMIR: "i think dropping junaid and sohaib maqsood is the reason for pakistan lost thr series"

4.20pm Pitch Report, courtesy of Kepler Wessels: This is the same surface from the first ODI. This has been the most difficult pitch to bat on. It turns the most and gets slower as the game moves on. Very dry and no grass on it whatsoever. Can't see it personally making any difference. If you bat first, it will be an advantage as the pitch will slow down and spin more. So batting first is the key

Imran: "I suggest Pak to batting with Irfan & junaid than ajmal, tanvir, afridi, akmal, amin, misbah, sohaib, hafeez & shehzad, atleast than they will not give 5 wickets for 10 runs as they are doing in this series"

Aftab: "I think it is the right time for Pakistan cricket board to skip their last Misbah option and move forward to next option for upcoming World Cup ..... Best Wishes for Green Shirts"

Muhammad Nadeem Haider Kharal: "Really unhappy to see the leading quality of "Misbah", he has not gut of being a good captain by playing same team again and again he be hoping against hope. not dropping non-performer and giving them chances again and again at Pakistan cost"

Akash: "Expecting a comment " Sack misbah from captaincy, He can't even win a toss, how can he supposed to win a match for us.""

Bryon Haines: "Thanks for the teams early, I will relax now and enjoy the game. Bryon."

Zohaib: "Umar Amin again!! What is Misbah trying to prove. Even though I am from Pakistan I wish and I know Pakistan will lose today. That way we might get rid of Misbah and his tactics."

rizwan umer: "I think Pakistan should open with afridi. Only Waseem Akram used him properly. while chasing afridi at 7 or 8 is wastage of his talent. At opening he can get atleast one 50 + in 5 innings and when he make 50+ Pakistan winning chances are highest."

Adeel hussain: "I just want to see shoaib maqsood. he is very good in 4th match."

Saffer: "I like this from the Saffers - With the series already won, they can afford these untested changes, and the guys coming in will definitely want to show their worth. Good thinking."

David: "I think we missed a trick by dropping Tahir.. Hope it doesnt come back to bite us.."

Paul Kruger: "Is it just me or does SA have a very long batting line-up today?"

SheikhChilli: "Why play Umar Amin again and not Nasir Jamshed? Surely Jamshed has done more with the chances given to him! And what about Shan Masood?"

omer: "Extremely Happy that Pakistan will chase. At least they will get an opportunity to improve if not win. And yea today is my Birthday Do wish me :P Thank you in advance"

Hassan Ahmed: "Misbah seems to be so consistent in everything , even in losing the toss :)"

KamI!: "Today Pakistan should play with the following batting order: Ahmed, Hafeez, Akmal, Misbah, Asad, Afridi than rest according to situation. Umer Akmal should come at no 3."

Ashar khan: "Pakistan also need a coach who could give some tips to misbah how to Win a toss. (He is very bad on it)"

Ehtsham: "Please Please get rid of Akmal"

AB de Villiers, South Africa captain: Its a good wicket, and it has been working for us in the UAE. Need to adapt better to the conditions today. Looking for more partnerships like the last game. Morkel, Steyn will be rested. Parnell and Philander will be coming in. Robin Peterson in for Imran Tahir. Need to get basics in place and work hard for the momentum. We know we have to work hard to get the momentum

Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan captain: I think both sides are heads (regards to toss and not having won for a while now). We need to bat first, especially under the lights, so that's a little bit of advantage. Nothing different in the track from the first game. Umar Amin will be in for Asad Shafiq.

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and will bat first

3.58pm We are just moments from the toss, which will be held at 4.00pm IST.

Bongwes: "I wish Philander and David's can be given a chance today"

Taha: "I would love to see Sarfaraz playing instead if Umar Akmal today. We will have a regular keeper and he too can make 18-20 runs on a regular basis so y opt with a non-regular who is best known for his batting!"

Faisal Paracha: "Pakistan should give a chance to Sarfaraz Ahmed and rest Irfan."

Amjad Buledi: "I am sure that this match will entertain us"

Nasir Mahmood Malik: "I have a serious suggestion to make. Pakistan should go in this match without Misbah, Afridi and Hafeez, and see how team goes."

Gareth : "South Africa has to play Philander today - surely ?"

mohsin: "Pakistan should change their batting order.Akmal,Maqsood,Amin & Misbah should come at 3,4,5,6 while hafeez should be dropped and nasir jamsheed should open with a youngster."

zulfiqar: "I am hoping that Pakistan will perform in more improve manner. As last match we seen they were very compose but un fortunately stain one over turn the table. I think today Pakistan will out class SA in both bowling and fielding as well"

Effy: "how about dropping Asad Shafiq and paying Jamshed at one down ?"

Farhan: "Nasir Jamshed should play instead of Asad Shafiq"

Prashanth: "So rohan, leaving pakistan's tour of Zimbabwe. When was the last time a century hit by any pakistani batsmen in ODIS?"

Muhammad Bilal: "pakistan should give afridi chance to open the innings with Ahmad."

Bryon Haines: "Hope you are able to bring us the teams early enough for fantasy players to participate as you have not been able to do it in the past few games. Bryon."

fahad: "it is necessary as for as Pakistan team is concern,to play positive cricket Specially up coming T20 Series.Pakistan should win this match"

3.50pm For those of you who haven't, do check out Firdose Moonda's preview of today's game. While there will be no drama in terms of determining a series victor, there are some storylines and factors that may come as of some interest to you.

3.45pm Hello and welcome to our live ball-by-ball coverage of the 5th and final ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in Sharjah. This encounter has become a dead rubber of sorts after South Africa wrapped up victory in the previous game, securing the series 3-1. This fixture is more of a momentum booster for the hosts, who will then have to travel down to South Africa for the return series which begins on November 20. For now, please do send your feedback as we ramp up for the start of the game at 4.30pm IST.

0.1

Mohammad Irfan to Amla, 1 run, starts off with a length ball which seems to square up Amla as he gets this down to third man for a single

0.2

Mohammad Irfan to de Kock, 1 run, slightly fuller as de Kock works this away to third man to get off the mark

Hanif: "Since its a dead rubber, why not rest Ajmal and Irfan, Pak got a busy schedule ahead for a change. High time Misbah relinquishes the captaincy and plays as a batter only, perhaps that would get the best out of him."

0.3

Mohammad Irfan to Amla, no run, length ball again which comes in as Amla gets forward to defend comfortably

0.4

Mohammad Irfan to Amla, 2 runs, Amla able to work away this length ball to deep midwicket for a couple

0.5

Mohammad Irfan to Amla, OUT, fuller ball on middle and leg which Amla fails to get a bat on as Irfan goes up instantly for the appeal. This one rapped on the pads and it looked plumb on first sight. Umpire raises the slow finger of death, and Amla consults with de Kock before deciding against reviewing the decision. Big blow early for South Africa, and Pakistan will be over the moon as Amla falls again cheaply in this series

HM Amla lbw b Mohammad Irfan 3 (3m 4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 75.00

And it is Faf du Plessis at No. 3

0.6

Mohammad Irfan to du Plessis, no run, shortish length wide of off stump that continues on its path as du Plessis is content to let it go

Indian: "Pak should look beyond Afridi now & develop a new all-rounder for WC 15, he is absolutely useless, no sense of being a senior teammate, no responsibility taken to finish the game while chasing or fielding & after playing 366 ODI`s he would have been far responsible than this, jst look at his captain"

End of over 1 (4 runs) South Africa 4/1 (RR: 4.00)

2.2

Mohammad Irfan to du Plessis, 1 wide, back of a length and spearing to the slips as the second wide of this over is called

Rohail Aftab: "How about his mishandling of Hammad Azam? He played under Misbah's captaincy and he gave him neither bowling nor proper batting opportunity. Sending Hammad even below Afridi to bat that was surely pathetic handling of a promising player."

Mohammad Irfan to du Plessis, no run, short of a length on middle which hits du Plesiss on the gloves. Looked painful that

Zekria: "How on earth Misbah not giving new ball to Junaid as he proved himself a fatal weapon in opening hour of the inning. Misbah now should adopt aggression in his leading skill to get Pakistan out of this sorry situation."

3.4

Sohail Tanvir to de Kock, no run, length ball on middle which de Kock plays away to the leg side

asad: "leave afridi alone, he is your highest wicket taker in the series, even if you wanna play him at No-11, he still should have a place."

4.3

Mohammad Irfan to de Kock, FOUR, short of a length as de Kock latches on to this one quickly to pull this in front of square for the first boundary of the day

4.4

Mohammad Irfan to de Kock, FOUR, even better from de Kock, just pushes this length ball past the bowler, and mid on, as this one reaches the long-on boundary

4.5

Mohammad Irfan to de Kock, FOUR, and yet another boundary, but a fortuitous one for the leftie as he almost cuts a length ball onto his stumps, which ends up traveling through to the fine leg fence

4.6

Mohammad Irfan to de Kock, FOUR, would you believe it, almost a carbon copy of the previous delivery and outcome as once again de Kock drags this with the ball just missing the stumps, and a short third man, to the fine leg boundary

Amjad: "Hafeez has let Pakistan down more than any one else. Play him as bowling allrounder and make him bat at no.5 or 6"

End of over 5 (17 runs) South Africa 28/1 (RR: 5.60)

And the Batting Powerplay has been signalled by the umpire

35.1

Junaid Khan to Miller, no run, back of a length on middle as this crashes into the pads, with Junaid going up for the appeal. But this was looking too high and probably going down the leg side too

35.2

Junaid Khan to Miller, 1 run, back of a length ball and this one hits the pads yet again. Looked a better shout as the batsmen scamper for the run, with the fielder on the leg side firing in a throw at the striker's stumps. This was an inside-edge however

35.3

Junaid Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, round the wicket to AB as he drives this overpitched ball

Vasim Shaikh: "In the last 5 Games Afridi had Scored only 51 runs that to coming late in the order when the pressure on team is at the peak, Why Pakis are not trying to do some changes in their line up & ask Afridi to Bat at No. 1, 2 or 3. & fancy their chances. Either way if he got out no need to worry as he is not performing down the line...."

35.4

Junaid Khan to Miller, FOUR, back of a length ball outside off which Miller sees early as he rocks back on the back foot to pull this fiercely to the midwicket boundary. The timing was superb on that one as it rocketed to the fence

35.5

Junaid Khan to Miller, 1 run, length ball on middle and off as Miller gets a single down to third man

35.6

Junaid Khan to de Villiers, 1 run, pitched in line of middle and leg as AB is able to tuck this away to mid-on

Mohsin Shafiq: "bad luck Pakistan had to chase in 4/5 matches. stop blaming too much on batting. don't forget what happened to SA when they were chasing on these slow pitches. Pakistan came very close to win 2/3 times they chased the score."

36.3

Saeed Ajmal to Miller, 1 run, Miller able to drive this off the back foot down to long-off

Lance: "Faff should be dropped . The entire SA Top six are capable of winning matches with the bat except for him. A world class nr. 3 cannot be averaging +-27. He is mediocre."

36.5

Saeed Ajmal to Miller, no run, speared in on middle as Miller plays this back to Ajmal

36.6

Saeed Ajmal to Miller, no run, similar delivery from the previous one as Miller tries in vain to hit this past the bowler. Good bowling here from Ajmal

38.2

Saeed Ajmal to de Villiers, 1 run, once again tries to improvise a hoick off the back foot, but ends up dabbing this down to long-on

38.3

Saeed Ajmal to Miller, no run, Miller shuffles down to try and negate the turn as the ball crashes into the pads. An appeal goes up, but it was definitely hopeful

38.4

Saeed Ajmal to Miller, OUT, and the torture for Miller is over as he hits this length ball, arguably quicker than the previous few deliveries, straight back to Ajmal off the back foot. Was in no position to play that shot and pays the price ultimately as he is surprised by the quicker one. South Africa lose a wicket in the Powerplay, and they are now 150 for 5

39.2

Mohammad Irfan to de Villiers, 1 run, full on the off stump and he drives to mid-off as his bat face turns on impact. He sets off immediately as Junaid Khan takes aim and throws down the stumps, but the SA captain is well home

39.4

Mohammad Irfan to de Villiers, no run, oh, he's sent back, but the call for no came quick enough for McLaren to make his ground. Pushes the length ball on off stump to mid-off and wants a non-existent single

39.5

Mohammad Irfan to de Villiers, 1 run, seemed a little slower there, as AB waits on the back foot for it to come to him and dabs it away to third man

39.6

Mohammad Irfan to McLaren, 1 leg bye, down the leg side, fullish length ball. There was no bat involved as he was looking to clip it to fine leg. That is where the ball ends up and the batsmen take a single

48.3

Junaid Khan to Peterson, 2 runs, full and wide and Peterson is able to drive this comfortably, and I say comfortably in the best way as it is still a tough pitch out there, through to extra-cover. What a stroke to get off the mark, even if it did not fetch a boundary

Lakshman Kumar: "To all those who were criticizing Faf for his slow innings, its that stand between Faf and AB that laid a platform for SA for the final 10 overs..!! You can't expect Faf to slog when they were 62/3..!!"

48.4

49.1

Sohail Tanvir to Parnell, FOUR, slower ball on and around off as Parnell just pushes this in the gap between mid-on and sweeper cover to find the boundary. Surreal shot that one

49.2

Sohail Tanvir to Parnell, 3 runs, McLaren goes for a swat to this length ball outside off, which spoons up to point who fails to get a hand on it. AB wanted three as he dives just in time to make his crease after Irfan, at sweeper cover, throws it in

49.3

Sohail Tanvir to de Villiers, FOUR, full and just outside as AB gets on one knee to slam this over midwicket. The Pakistani fielders on the leg side are unable to track it, but somehow it reaches the boundary. Hundred up for the South Africa captain, and a real captain's knock considering the conditions.

49.4

Sohail Tanvir to de Villiers, SIX, how can I describe this to you, length ball outside off and angling in as AB waits on the back foot to just swat this over midwicket for a huge six. This one realtl climbed!

49.5

Sohail Tanvir to de Villiers, FOUR, makes himself a bit of room as he lofts this full ball crisply over extra-cover for a boundary

49.6

Sohail Tanvir to de Villiers, FOUR, is he captain fantastic or what? full and on off as AB backs away slightly to drive this like a bullet through the inner ring to finish the innings with a four

Well there you have it. South Africa have put on 268 for 7 on a pitch that was starting to slow down and offer turn for the spinners. After some early nerves, both Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers did well to consolidate before the end overs, when they just hit a barrage of runs. Considering they only hit 114 in the first 30 overs, they finished their last ten overs with, you can guess it, 114 runs. Simply outstanding effort from the tourists, and Pakistan will certainly feel like they let slip a good performance with the ball. It will be tough going for the hosts on a pitch that will only worsen as we head into the late evening. Do join us again in about 40 minutes time for the chase!
