SL batsmen lacking confidence - Atapattu

Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka's batting coach, has said his team's batsmen have been lacking in confidence on the tour of the UAE. Sri Lanka were beaten 0-1 in the Tests and were skittled out for 131 in the first ODI in Dubai.

"I really think it is nothing to do with the technique and application but its about the confidence which they are lacking," Atapattu said. "We have played so much cricket and if it happens at a stretch then it's important you get out of it. When you get out for low scores, when you are not doing well as a batting unit, then it's a matter of confidence."

The tracks have been quite flat for the bulk of the tour so far and Sri Lanka's batting, barring Kumar Sangakkara, has been below-par. "You cannot justify (failures) after looking at the personalities in the dressing room, its just that they come out thinking that its a brand new game and we are not continuing what we did on Friday or maybe two months ago," Atapattu said.

Atapattu, a former Sri Lanka opener, praised the Pakistan team, saying it's among the best he's seen from the country in the recent past. "They looked very fresh from the start and they are a very good side, having lots of allrounders and have options. This Pakistan side is one of the best I have seen in the recent past having played against their best teams in my days."

He also complimented Misbah-ul-Haq, the Pakistan captain. "Misbah is a very cool and calm character and what I saw in the Tests was very impressive, he handles things well and is somewhat like [Arjuna] Ranatunga and he has the patience to wait until he achieves what he wants to."

The teams play five ODIs in all. The second one takes place in Dubai on November 14.

@Momin Khan - SL board DID NOT Change, it is Sanga who asked to relieve his own duties....

  • on November 14, 2011, 10:38 GMT

Match fixing..+how can youngsters win matches when they were not given chance ?Mathews won us few..Tharanaga too won us few & he has score more centuries than all 3 so called greedy senior players..Chandmal scored 2 centuries in 7 matches when they allowed him to bat at 3...So what more ? Thing is seniors dont want these youngsters to perform coz they want their childhood mates like Siva,KanDUMBI,Prasanna to play forever... SL actually have so many wonderfully talented young batsmen...

  • seantells on November 14, 2011, 9:34 GMT

I think SL back in square one again, Captaincy is a flop, player selections are somewhat same coaches are still in learning process and Cricket Board itself in a mess as rumours of players and staff not being paid! and they talk about lack of confidence?

  • on November 14, 2011, 6:11 GMT

    Dear Marvan,

If as you claim the batsmen do in fact lack confidence, why does Dilshan always bat first when he wins the toss ?

  • on November 14, 2011, 6:10 GMT

i wan't to ask i question from srilankan board why they change there captian. Sangakkara is better captian then dilshan.Dilshan is a good batsman but when he become a captian his average is 13.69 in 13 matches.

  • satish619chandar on November 14, 2011, 5:13 GMT

Truly.. They lack huge confidence.. They themselves have to be blamed for that.. Apart from Sanga, none looks to be on mark.. To some extent, we do need to agree they are playing an excellent attack and a team who are in need to prove to the public that they put all their effort to win and regain their faith..

If Sri Lanka has to win, the top guns Dilshan, Sanga & Mahela has to perform and that has been the trend. When 11 players are playing the others should also perform and you cannot rely on the seniors every time. I don't remember any recent matches where Sri Lanka has won after the seniors failed.

@ chinthaka, athapaththu is the one of the best batsmen (technical wise) SL ever made. An elegant player to watch, how you forget his high-elbow cover-drive. How can you say failed batsmen who had Test and ODI average around 40.

  • on November 14, 2011, 1:07 GMT

Leave IPL all international players will focus more, its the IPL that has created a mess.

  • on November 14, 2011, 0:57 GMT

Mahela cant open..We have two established openers and excluding last 2 series they have been among the best in the world if not the best..Dili- Tharanga were unbelievable during the WC as they set an all time record by scoring 700+..True that Mahela bats well at front but thats not what we want..he has enough experience so he should take responsibility and bat at middle guiding the youngsters like Chandimal..but that`s not happening. He & Sanga didnt even go to practices b4 England tour and did nothing in tests..Youngsters always should bat at top..but our seniors never take responsibility..Sanath,Mahela,& etc all are same..so selfish

Dont blame any Coaches are players other than the Cricket board. Untill the WC the team was iin good hands with Sanga. He should have been the leader atlest for anothe r02 years untill they groom a young capt. Now dont blame anyone just pay the price of being bad management. There's a lot of talent in Sri Lanka but you need good people to manage the build a for the future. Losing games are ok because end of the day only one side can win, but you need to play good Cricket.

spellbinder76, just for your info: Not that I'm a big Misbah fan, but he is the highest run getter, ironically for Pakistan in the T20s :)

  • ssduk on November 13, 2011, 22:16 GMT

@ Ramesh Dharshana Perera, Could you please tell me who scored well in England to win 2 ODI's and T20??? Who is the highest runs scorer in Last T20 WC ??? • on November 13, 2011, 19:45 GMT

    @Ikbal - Who is the highest run getter in 2011 WC & 2009 T20 WC ?

  • on November 13, 2011, 18:45 GMT

Dilshan can perform only in IPL

  • on November 13, 2011, 17:30 GMT

its better if you win tomorrow..otherwise expect what indians did to their players in 2007..We waited enough & now our patience are gone..

  • Philip_Gnana on November 13, 2011, 15:42 GMT

Lacking confidence? Well there was no lack of it when the senior players decided to stay back and play in the IPL. That was a trigger as the the rest of the team could not look up to the senior players anymore. They are so good at talking these days, that they have forgotten that they are still cricketers. The love of money is the root of all evil..... The batsmen need to be in the team because they deserve it. Not because they deserved it at one time. Marvan has now been the batting coach for some time and should have been able to pick these matters out earlier and not after three test series. He is no psychologist but as a former captain he needs to take part of the blame too. Try dropping one of the seniors and give a youngster that spot. That will will give them a kick in the hinder part to make them get on with their game. Philip Gnana, Surrey

yes marvan u also need to go with dilshan with the same way which showed in above picture.Otherwise he will always bowled as usual. Please go with him inside ground.

  • spellbinder76 on November 13, 2011, 15:36 GMT

PCB should focus on creating three specialist teams for the 1. Tests 2. ODI 3. 20/20. A player may be allowed to play on two types of the mathes but not on all three. A 20/20 player may not be selected for test matches and same goes for the test player he will not be considered for 20/20 matches. The very best may be selected for two fixtures like Afridi, Razzak. Umar Akmal, Sohail Tanvir are good for 20/20 and ODI while Umar Gul, Younus, Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal are good for Tests and ODI. Misbah and Azhar are good only for test matches.

  • on November 13, 2011, 15:28 GMT

Respect for Srilankans, But Pakistan is gunning for the glory. I think as Misbah is the captain, it is good for the team and for Afridi as BOOM will perform better than any other player, WC T20 2012 is for Team PAKISTAN!

  • on November 13, 2011, 15:14 GMT

Great compliment by a great batsman

  • on November 13, 2011, 15:14 GMT

I agree with the atapattu that the current Pakistani team is very strong and they are giving their 90%. Apart from the performance percentage, i must say Pakistan still need some changes. They should give chance to some aggressive new batsman's of Karachi and Rawalpindi and Pakistani regions (I admit that all cities and provinces have pool of talented bowlers and batsman).

I am also a greatest fan of Srilankan team and have lots of respect for the Team Srilanka. They are best and will be on the winning track soon. Srilankan team is very decent and i wish them for the success. In the end, great temperament shown by the Pakistani team especially BOOM BOOM.. Best of luck for the next game!
