Misbah-ul-Haq heads to the nets, Dubai, November 13, 2011

Big Picture

With every passing match, the stock of Misbah-ul-Haq continues to rise. A dysfunctional board, the loss of world-class fast bowlers to the spot-fixing crisis, a fall-out between captain and coach earlier in the year leading to the brief retirement of the talismanic Shahid Afridi - none of that has stopped Misbah from steering Pakistan to an almost six-month unbeaten run. Some of the opposition along the way might have been the lightweights, but the thumping win in the first one-dayer came against one of the top limited-overs sides in the world. For a man whose international career seemed well and truly over a little more than a year ago, it's been quite a ride since taking over as captain.

Things haven't been as smooth for the man who became Sri Lanka's leader after the World Cup. There's been some scattered Twenty20 success, but Tillakaratne Dilshan's side has lost all their major Test and ODI assignments over the past six months. After the abysmal batting collapse in the first one-dayer, Dilshan was critical of the shot-selection, especially from a hugely experienced top order. His own one-day form hasn't been great, and Sri Lanka have the added worry of Mahela Jayawardene struggling with a knee injury, which could put him out of Monday's match.

Form guide

Watch out for…

The solidity of Pakistan's openers in recent matches have reduced the opportunities for Umar Akmal, but a substantial performance from him will deter the team management from being tempted to replace him with Shoaib Malik. Umar was Man of the Match when Pakistan halted Australia's 34-match World Cup unbeaten streak, but he hasn't made a half-century against Test opposition in more than a year. The talent has never been in doubt, and he's still only 21, but the results need more consistency.

Another highly rated 21-year-old batsman looking to make an impression is Dinesh Chandimal. After the highs of a Lord's century, his form has nosedived - three low scores against Australia led to him losing his spot. He regained his place in the XI on Friday and top scored with 28 but his position in the order is a source of debate. Jayawardene usually prefers to bat as high as possible, but Chandimal's presence at No. 4 pushes Jayawardene down to three-down. "I want Chandimal to bat between Sanga and Mahela," Dilshan said. "Sanga comes in at three and Mahela at five, and if Chandimal can bat around the two of them it would be good."

Team news

After their comprehensive victory on Friday, Pakistan are unlikely to want to tinker with their combination.

Pakistan (probable) 1 Imran Farhat, 2 Mohammad Hafeez, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq (capt.), 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Aizaz Cheema

Though it was the batting that was abject in their defeat in the previous game, Sri Lanka's top six is more or less set in stone, unless if Jayawardene fails to recover from his knee problem. In that case, Dimuth Karunaratne, the 23-year-old top-order batsman from SSC, will likely take his place. Changes are likely to come lower down in the order, with Thisara Perera and Jeevan Mendis as possible replacements for the new boys, Kosala Kulasekara and Seekkuge Prasanna. Perera could even be brought in at the expense of Dilhara Fernando, who was erratic on Friday though he touched express speeds of 145kph.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Kosala Kulasekara 8 Thisara Perera 9 Seekkuge Prasanna/Jeevan Mendis 10 Lasith Malinga 11 Suranga Lakmal

Stats and trivia

  • Shahid Afridi's Man-of-the-Match award on Friday was his 25th, one more than Inzamam-ul-Haq has received. Saeed Anwar (28) is the only Pakistan player with more such honours.
  • Tillakaratne Dilshan's batting form has deserted him in ODIs since he took over as captain after the World Cup. In 12 matches, he has only one half-century and averages a paltry 13.66.

"He handles things well and is somewhat like Arjuna Ranatunga and he has the patience to wait until he achieves what he wants to."
Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka's batting coach, is impressed with the calmness Misbah brings to the Pakistan side

"I've got experienced guys in the team and they're really doing very well, especially Younis Khan, who's always contributing to the team, now Shahid Afridi has come in and performed very well and Abdul Razzaq also bowled very well (on Friday)."
Misbah says the presence of old hands in the side makes his job easy

SL should consider replacing Mahela. not only today but forever. He is not contributing for a while now. Dilshan is not much of a captain. SL took a childish dicission when they give mahela the vice captaincy when he retired as captain. we would have had a better captain if the vice capaincy is given to a rising player at that moment. Tharanga Malinga, even Dilshan were choices. Except Aravinda's times other authorities have questionable sanity.

Mahela`s injury is suspicious..he doesnt like to let youngsters to bat at top..he wants no3 or 4..need immediate investigation.

Misbah is wonderful Captain. Lot of credit goes to him.

Four matches still to go,Pakistan can come down as fast as they go up, unless Misbah factor comes in. Pakistan need to do well here to rise in the ICC ODI rankings, they are No. 6 at the moment.

sri lankan team has mentaly problam, very easy team pakistan 2 beat but in past history of criceket lankans afried for pakistan team, they must play well and win, another one must change captanciy of dilly and take over mahela or sanga ,go srilanka go

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 9:56 GMT)

sirilankans rather then staying at wicket are playing too many shots. Its not t20 they must understand .they must build partnerships and save wickets for the end and then go for quick runs.they should forget jayasurya time period ,he is no more in team and that era is gone .

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 9:24 GMT)

Inclusion of Afridi & Razzaq has given a great boost to our team, it help us to have a stronger lower middle order along with smoe depth in bowling. Throughout this series some agression were missing by Pakistani side, but Afridi's inclusion has showed us some great agression & attack with bowling and fielding as well in first ODI. Hope Misbah will be a bit agressive and try to go hard at the opposition in upcoming matches.

Pakistan is going to win the next world cup. Thoughts about that?

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 9:15 GMT)

Sri Lanka, have been abject to say the least ever since the start of the tests. Either they are tired through too much cricket or do not have the quality in depth to replace murli, mendis and malinga. Who are top performers. Subsequentaly batting has become brittle. Minus Sangakarra whose class is permanent both on and off the field.

Real improvements are needed. I guess Sri Lanka did not expend enough effort to keep Sanga as captain.

Marvan you are paid to do a job.No point admiring Misbah(he deserves fully though)when our batting collapse regularly. That reflects badly on you and admiring Misbah you cannot get away from your responsibility.

Misbah is Very Calm and Strong in every difficult situation,, Only the thing lacking is the luck on his side,, and when his day,, he will prove himself best of all, Inshallah

I wonder that misbah can achieve his team a lot .Shahid afridi is talented but he need to control his team with misbah .I wish it would be a better future for Pakistan and i hope that pakistan team can win this series inshallah .Thank you

@Pak-Kiwi. Mohd yusuf was a great player, but wouldn't it be too late for him to make a comeback from retirement. i understand its a common trend with pak players, but still very unlikely. Although he could be a batting coach for Pakistan...

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 8:52 GMT)

And just how are you going to play agressive cricket against the quality bowling attack....Pakistani bowling attack is one of the best bowling attack in the world.... they have world class fast bowlers like Gul, Khan, Cheema and spinners like afridi, hafeez, ajmal..... if you try playing aggressive cricket against them.... you might lose too many wickets in the process...... and you will be in more troubles... the best way to approach them is to play them partnerships...... the more partnerships you build the more stability you will have in your game..... even if your run-rate is low... at least you will have a good total on the board for your bowlers to defend....

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 8:46 GMT)

There is a suspicious paterrn of injuries.Once Ajantha medis was dropped ,he was sustained with injury.Once mahela been dropped down the order ,he is with a injury. So is that means Mahela is not like to bat at number 5 and declared him self not available???????????????????????Further I hope Jeewan medis and thisara perera Dilhara. My team for the match 1Tharanga 2dilly 3.sanga 4.Chandi 5.Mahela/Dimuth 6.Mathews 7.Jeewan 8.Thisara 9.Kosala 10.malinga 11 lakmal

Hey people,

Thoughts about Mohammad Yusuf?

Posted by ThePakKiwi on (November 14, 2011, 8:18 GMT)

I feel that you have taken up a great point about him. It is clear that you really care about Umar bhai. And good on you, my main point really meant to say that Umar really needs to learn to block and watch the ball. He needs to learn how to play sensibly, he has to STOP swinging (and missing) at every ball!

I hope this clears out all your confusion about my comment, and no hard feeling. But hey! Go Go Go Pakistan... Pak--Kiwi

Posted by IndiaNeedsBowlers on (November 14, 2011, 8:17 GMT)

1. Pak played very well. they bowled tight, and spinners really did a good job, after the seamers made the early in rodes. Also the Keepers performance was good (specially after the standards set by Kamran Akmal). Batsmen hardly had to do anything, 130 in 50 overs is not going to post any challenge. 2. SL have been having these collapses, even in their last series against AUS, This should be a cause of worry. We all know that SL is a good team, with talented players. But this is one problem that they need to address quickly. If it was one off, you could let it pass, but this has happened quite a few times in last couple of months. Hopefully we'll see a better performance from SL and an intresting contest this time.

I think Marvan should look into his area first and give the SL batsman necessary support and moral boost rather than admiring the better performance of opponent.

I wish Misbah all the best - its impressive the way he keeps talking about senior ones like Younis, Afridi, Razzaq etc. It shows that he respects them. I wish these three keep performing under the calm leadership of Misbah.

@mjee u r right they lost the match because of low run rate but who was behind the low run rate ? well my friend it was Pakistan's superb bowling.

Posted by DJyash on (November 14, 2011, 5:59 GMT)

i am sorry cricinfo i want to write two comments here because 1000words are not enaugh for me to say things to these some stupid cricket fans who think hard ball cricket is just like the soft tennis ball cricket they play in srilankan streets, srilankan cricke is going down in a steady basis and all of the time it is there batting which collaps and everybody scold dilshan for his captancy but did they ever notice that it is because of our batting we lost games?bowlers did there best in every game except first test in uae,but dilshan can't make batsman bat..he can only make field placing and change bowlers and make stratergies but batsman should support him,you always compair him with sanga mahela see who was there in th team when he captain, murali, great chaminda vass, and later on inform malinga and kulasekara, but who dilshan have now?bunch of unenthusiastic so called (seamers)who don't know the art of swing what will you suggest to do with those people?

Posted by Fadi_Gen on (November 14, 2011, 5:51 GMT)

@mjee: thats totally unfair..Pakistan played superbly..and all the credit goes to Srilanka didn't loose it..Pakistan didn't let them win...

Posted by atthipatti on (November 14, 2011, 5:44 GMT)

these 2 teams are only fit to play Nintendo games against each other....they have few mickey mouses in there teams!!

Posted by anver777 on (November 14, 2011, 5:40 GMT)

SL should change their game plan to a attacking mode & must put Pak bowlers under pressure....presently SL batters are under pressure & like in tests they're still playing negative cricket, which does not suit them at all.....come on SL play your natural game & show the world that SL is one of the best in overs format !!!!!

Posted by kalof123 on (November 14, 2011, 5:38 GMT)

agree with mjee, Sri Lankan batting is negative at the moment. go back to 96, play 6+ per over. its better to be all out for 131 in 20 overs than 41 overs. please bat agrrassive with 6 + run rate . be possitive. dont protect your wickets. its ok to loose all wickets and score 300+ runs. if you score in a good run rate definately u get the momentum.

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 5:02 GMT)

yeah guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dis bis very graceful moments for all pakistani fans but pak will have 2 continue this performance alwaysssss

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 5:01 GMT)

Agree with Ranil. It's good luck of Misbah..just like Shoaib Malik had in his captaincy days by 5 match series against both Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, but once he encountered other teams, he had to give up captaincy

Posted by Y.Raza on (November 14, 2011, 4:54 GMT)

wish to see kamran akmal back with better glove work and improved off feild doubt he gives option of playing an extra bowler or a batsman...has anyone got updates on "Wahab Riaz" exclusion? Why the hell in this world Asad Shafiq cant be used as a keeper in international matches?

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 4:52 GMT)

Fingers crossed. Hoping Imran Farhat is NEVER picked for Pakistan ever again! But I guesss I'm asking for too much :(

Posted by mjee on (November 14, 2011, 4:38 GMT)

I think a lot of folks are missing the point here. Pakistan did not win that game, Sri Lanka lost the game. When you score so slowly after the loss of one wicket - there is no hope for the remaining batsmen - who need to get on with it. Look at the strike rates of the batsmen in that game - only Chamdimal score at ODI pace. You cannot win games scoring that slowly. Sri Lankans need to re-group, and play without fear - go back to the flare of days gone by - forget caution - put some pressure on the opposition. Look at the test matches - same story - when you score less that 2.5 runs an over in tests - you rarely win matches. The Sri Lankan run rate did not go past 4 for the whole game on Friday.

Posted by ThePakKiwi on (November 14, 2011, 4:13 GMT)

Come on all Pakistanis,

This is the first time in a while that the Pakistani Cricket team Is winning all there matches played. Remember the 2010-11 thrashing of New Zealand, at NEW ZEALAND!!! Pakistan won that and we have been amazing from then. Coming 3rd in the world cup, knocking out Australia!!! (Who doesn't like that?) So put on a smile, and stop arguing about the past, It time too see the Future.....

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 4:12 GMT)

my playing XI would be HAfeez,Afridi,Younis,Umar Akmal,Shoaib Malik,Misbah,Razzaq, Asad Shafiq,Umar gul,Saeed ajmal, aizaz cheema.

Umar Skmal should be used as wicket keeper batsman. n groom him coz he is fine talent with bat as compare to sarfraz and adnan akmal and zulqarnain. so this place should given to him.

Shoaib Malik can trn the game on at any time . afridi must be utilize at top order for power play and for batting power play u have Malik Misbah and Razzaq to crush any bowling side and Misbah need some time in net to improvve his run rate it help Pakistan to get more win not in ODI's also in Tests. its better to bring Azhar Ali to the squad instead of Asad Shafiq so he can proved to be a M.Yousuf replacment for Pak team in both formats. but its packed side so far so we have to play with those batsmen n giving wicket keeping to Akmal will give depth to Pak batting and you can add an extra bowler at any time without disturbing the squad

Posted by shantiratnamaj on (November 14, 2011, 4:09 GMT)

International support staff what you doing? what stats do you look at for planning a game when the team is struggling? Look at Mahela's record as a opening batsman and compare it against SL winning record when he opens the batting.. why cannot you put him back at opening with Dilshan? Mr.Dilshan don't you take your brain to the field? why don't you try anything un-conventional? why don't you try to open the bowling from one end with Suraj Randiv? Lakmal might be gud in the nets against the sri lankan batsman but you must realize the pakistanis practice against super fastbolwers in the world and they know how to wack lakmal easily. The boys in the road playing cricket in pakistan are faster than lakmal. Obviously team spirity is not there...the big talk Sangakara is selfish he doesnt help Dilshan in the field with the strategy. I have never seen a team talk in the field among Sanga, dilshan and mahela. If yu cant play together please leave the team!

Posted by Sri1967 on (November 14, 2011, 3:59 GMT)

SL has to select the correct team based on present conditions and I'm surprised to see why they are not doing it. Is the team selected from a panel of peolple who are sitting in CMB? For today's game team should be i.e. Dilshan, Taranga, Sanga, Mahela, Chandimal, Angelo, Jeevan, Thisara, Malinga, Lakmal and Randiv. If Mahela is not fit, Dimuth should play. Last Friday when PAK had 3 spinners (Ajmal, Hafeez, Afridi) SL selected one (Prasanna) who barely had played intl cricket. PAK is the best team to beat any country if they play to their potential. Hoping to watch a good match today instead of a one sided game

Posted by ThePakKiwi on (November 14, 2011, 3:30 GMT)

YEA WOOOOO!!!! Pakistan's going to win the next world cup! Insha Allah

Posted by BravoBravo on (November 14, 2011, 3:05 GMT)

One has to recognize that despite all kind of turmoils in country, PCB, and team, PAK cricket team is playing very well. SL was a very good team, and they will bounce back soon. The problem with SL is that they played too much cricket with IND during recent past. Betweenn 2007-2010, it seemed like everyother day SL vs IND match is being played. These match were like a run fest. Listless run were made, new insignificant records were made. Atleast IND won their 100th Test match (after playing 70 YEARS OF CRICKET), and soon they became #1 (joke of ICC ranking). My point is that SL lost its competitive approach by playing with IND. As matter of fact besides all HYPE, IND win to loss ratio in every format of game is worst among top teams like AUS, ENG, WI, PAK and SA. They (SL) need to be playing with good teams like AUS, PAK, SA, and may be ENG as a visiting team. SL has lot of talent they can do it and they will improve.

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 2:16 GMT)

it will be a disgraceful loss to Paks today and you know what all praises of Misbah and his Captaincy will start pointing fingers at each other the same way all are talking about Dilshan's captaincy now....This is Cricket!

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 1:06 GMT)

Would cricinfo make up their point on Pakistan. During Misbah's captaincy the Pakistani team has been labeled slow but effective. However this article is labeling them as 'High-flying'.. Sri Lanka is too good to stay like this, they'll come through and sneak in a win and if Pakistan is complacent then they'll sneak up and win the series.

Posted by   on (November 14, 2011, 0:16 GMT)

I hope the coach and captain retain the same team. They have played well as a team and let them play few more, at least 2nd match together. Then based on result, you select the team for the 3rd match. Akmal should be a better choice than Malik. Even Asad should be given a chance. The management must find out the right combo for the England series which will be much tougher. Good Luck Mohsin and Misbah.

Posted by johnathonjosephs on (November 13, 2011, 23:48 GMT)

Hoping Dilshan and Mahela finds some form soon, or the South African tour is going to be brutal

Posted by Zahidsaltin on (November 13, 2011, 23:44 GMT)

ALL those asking for Dilshans head are totally wrong and not clear in mind. Dilshan as captain has not done anything wrong in the whole series. It is just that he and Mahela are out of form and they two are backbone of the batting. It is nothing with captaincy to do. Did he ask the players to get out for 136. Are you a supporter of SL then support him in hard times, prais him so he can get confidence.

Its Enough chances to pak to get back in to cricket world,,Guys time to back on driving the Cricket..Lets start cheering srilankans again..

Posted by   on (November 13, 2011, 23:37 GMT)

Pakistan should give up a chance to Shoaib Malik also He can also do well in both the fields\ bat and the bowl Hafeez is not showing good performace with the bat so he should given rest for 1 or 2 ODI's

Posted by   on (November 13, 2011, 22:40 GMT)

True dilshan is not the best captain going around but i dont think the management had any other choice. some might suggest Mattews but the guy has alot to learn as a player and not matured enough to lead a side. The best scenario for sri lanka would have been Sanga leading the side till Mattews was ready for the job and then step down but it didnt happen so the next best choice was.. unfortunately Dilshan

Posted by   on (November 13, 2011, 22:37 GMT)

It's too early to say anything about our team's performance, we've just experienced a single match and i personally believe Razzaq or Afridi should have been given the responsibility to open the match in place of Imran Farhat, They are still missing one Good Pacer which can be a huge draw back on upcoming matches...On the other note Razzaq is in no fitness to bowl at good pace, he has hardly got enough bounce to follow through keeper, but ofcourse we're too stubborn to think of any change before losing a match or maybe the whole series.

Don't forget the Australian Series where we defeated them on the very first match at dubai and then we went on t0 lose all the matches! not to mention Ricky Ponting and alot other Professionals were not there!

Posted by Deepfreezed on (November 13, 2011, 21:29 GMT)

This Sri Lankan team is a disgrace. A collection of adjunct failures. I do not want to even think about what will happen when they go to South Africa next up. They still trying to paddle people like Thisara Perera who has no hope.

Posted by touqeer777 on (November 13, 2011, 21:24 GMT)

My team for second ODI is:Hafeez,Afridi,Younis, malik,Misbah,Umar Akmal,Razzaq,Sarfraz,Gul,Cheema,Ajmal.Plz remove Farhat with Afridi otherwsie there is no use of Afridi and Razzaq for batting point of view.I think Malik deserve place in ODI and T20 in any team of world b/c he is good batsman, best fielder and part time bowler too but just to accommodate Farhat they have sacrifice one good player out of team.

"High-flying" ?? All it takes is 1-2 wins and these Pakistani players start flying high. Unfortunately that's been the problem. Hope the captain and coach bring them to ground level and make them aware of their true ability (aukaat).

Posted by   on (November 13, 2011, 20:31 GMT)

Some one should make dilshan step down as captain.. he is just not captain material..

Posted by   on (November 13, 2011, 20:25 GMT)

Pakistan seem to have got the winning habit, but I think England will have a little too much for them in the tests. The one day games may well be a different story. It will be a good test of how far both teams have come in those formats.

being a Pakistani, I found the last match to be quite boring (and I was at the stadium), hoping for a better challenge for Pakistan this time around.

i would agree wd afridi up the order and i dn particularly like imran farhat but he proved his place in the last match if he dosent perform may be afridi can b a make shift opener and umar akmal needs to make the most of the opportunities because hes replaceable arrogance or attitudes good if you live up to the expectations other wise malik should ytake his place..

Posted by DwightR on (November 13, 2011, 19:46 GMT)

problem with SL is they are trying out too many new players instead of sticking with talent that are proven, also surprising that with the way the pak spinners operated Randiv is not being considered- My ODI XI: 1 Dilshan 2 Tharanga 3 Sanga 4 Mahela 5 Chandimal 6 Mathews 7 Thissira 8 J Mendis 9 Malinga 10 Randiv 11 Lakmal

Posted by tradetekbiz on (November 13, 2011, 19:45 GMT)

@ Pak--Kiwi, how's Umar Akmal arrogant? If anything, the exact opposite is the truth. He bats wayy down the order at 6 usually, by which time there is hardly any time left to construct an inning, he was dropped from tests, without any cause really, because he has been as good if not better than the likes of Asad Shafiq. If anything, Pakistan team has let him down, he should constantly bat 4th in the line up, and should play all formats, he is only 21, give him some time and he will return with a profit on the investment.

Shoaib malik is a much better option than Umar Akmal all the best to pak make it 5-0

i really hope ak continue this great form and thrash england black and blue.. for test bolwing should be wahab riaz cheema and gul with ajmal. hafeez and shoaib malik part time bowlers. remove asad shafiq and get shoaib malik in. remove adnan akmal and dget umar akmal. he or taufeeq can keep wickets. pak has a good team now. pak fans plz reply:) -indian fan.

Shoaib Malik wouldn't be a bad option for the opening slot but who I am really waiting for to fill the opening slot is Sharjeel Khan (playing for Pakistan A currently). He needs to be given a chance..he is much more talented then that looser Imran Farhat

What kind of protest was Afridi holding? "I'm going to retire from cricket, in order to protest my sentence" If he wanted a rest, why didn't he ask the team management?

Pakistan is far better off without that arrogant Umar Akmal, he has been given soooo many matches to play and to impress, (a cricketer's dream) but he has wasted all of those opportunities. What shame!

Well done Pakistan. There is no doubt Misbah Ul Haq is good captain. Pakistan need to continue in the same manner.

Pakistan's Form guide. All w's Amazing.........

It could be a blessing in disguise is Mahela is not fit..He is doing nothing for the team since Dilshan became the captain...Also dropped so many catches in England, waste so many balls and score nothing...Probably he might have problems with Dilshan..If Mhela isnt batting Sanga should bat at no 5..Chandmail at 3 and Dimuth at 4

Inshallah we will continue this form into england series as well

It's a good side. But Pakistan needs a young opener like ahmed or nasir. Imran farhat is doing ok but we all know that he wont do good against a side that has good quality seamers. Umar akmal should come at no.4. And i hope that sadaf hussain gets selected for the bangladesh tour.

Without taking anything away from the excellent Pakistanis's I have to say that Sri Lanka are in a state of denial. No matter what the selector says, the batting coach says, or the many fans suggest, the Sri Lankans are not better than what the results show. Its a sad fact and the sooner those concerned accept this and move on they might just find the right replacements to make them a top team again.
