Played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium (neutral venue)
3,4,5,6,7 November 2011 (5-day match)

  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150
  • Overs 151-200

10 am All set for Test cricket to resume in Sharjah, Paranavitana and Dilshan to open for Sri Lanka, Gul to run in with the new ball, to three slips and a gully and a short leg

Tim: "Sri Lanka are going to have big problems with team balance as long as Matthews isn't bowling. It's a very tough ask to get your body fit to be a fully fledged batsman and bowler but Matthews needs to do his best to do it."

Eusha: "In the middle of everything, I think Pakistan well deserve compliments for having recovered the shock of losing bowlers like Amir and Asif. They always seem to find replacements of quality." Quite astonishing really, but the fast bowlers just keep coming and coming

majid: "this is one of the best move from dilshan to bring himself up the order at least some attacking cricket might come from him if he could stay a bit longer."

Pakistan interim coach and chief selector Mohsin Khan: "I am trying to make the players mentally tough and I am very glad that the boys are responding well. We still have the respect for the Sri Lankans' talent and calibre. They will definitely come back strong, and we are ready for that. We missed out in Abu Dhabi due to our own fault. In Dubai we played well in all departments. I have been telling my boys that we should be on our toes all the time against a side like Sri Lanka. The seniors like Misbah, Younis and Gul are setting a very good example. Everybody is just concentrating on the game and on cricket. The other matters will be tackled by our cricket board."

9.40 am Danny Morrison doing the pitch report says that the surface looks hard and a bit damp, with the grass rolled in. He thinks it will be a flat wicket, but the new ball could do something. There are also a few cracks around.

Sri Lanka have managed 197 in Abu Dhabi and 239 in Dubai in their first innings. How will they fare in Sharjah?

9.30 am Dilshan wins the toss and Sri Lanka will have a bat

Dilshan: "Looks like a different pitch from the last two games. Randiv comes in." Dilshan is back to his opening position. Lakmal and Thirimanne are out, Kosala Kulasekara makes his Test debut

Misbah: "We are not thinking too much about the rankings and just looking to play positive cricket." Pakistan are unchanged, and going in with two fast bowlers and two spinners

9.15 am Sharjah. The name has so many cricketing memories attached to it. Of innumerable tense matches between India and Pakistan, of that last-ball six by the incomparable Javed Miandad, of floodlit ODI triangulars, of 59 all out and 53 all out

In a way, it is fitting that Pakistan are involved as Test cricket returns to the storied venue after nine years. And they arrive here with a chance to go fifth in the ICC Test rankings if they can win this Test and take the three-match series 2-0. Have a look at Nitin Sundar's preview while we wait for the toss.

Sri Lanka have lots of work to do. Not only do they need to find some way to take 20 wickets, they also need their batting line-up to stand up. Some big personal landmarks beckon for that great combine of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara who are within touching distance of the 10,000 and 9,000-run mark in Test cricket respectively

0.1

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, and right away Gul goes past the outside edge with a length ball that appears to come in before seaming away sharply outside off

The pitch has a queer look to it, alternating between swathes of white and brown

0.2

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, gets behind it now, and plays out a length ball on the off side

0.3

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, FOUR, first runs of the Test as Para easily flicks an inswinging full ball off his pads fine down the leg side

Anees: "@ Eusha and Abhishek - Yes. And what is even more astonishing is that Pakistan still has bowlers who deserve to get a chance but can't do so due to tough competition."

0.4

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, no run, dropped, sharp chance put down by Azhar Ali at short leg, Para pushed at an inswinging delivery with a closed face and the ball flew off the inner part to Azhar who could not hold onto it as he went down

0.5

Umar Gul to Paranavitana, OUT, the drop makes no difference, Gul charges in next ball and bowls a brute of an away going delivery, pitches leg and rears up as it swerves across a squared-up Para, outside edge goes screaming high to Younis Khan at second slip, he holds on to the missile, top-class stuff from Gul, truly top-class

NT Paranavitana c Younis Khan b Umar Gul 4 (4m 5b 1x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

0.6

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, shuffles and quietly plays out a length ball finding some bounce outside off

End of over 1 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 4/1

    • TM Dilshan 0 (0b)
    • Umar Gul 1-0-4-1
1.1

Junaid Khan to Dilshan, 2 runs, starts with a length ball pitching outside leg that is defended towards midwicket

Daniel: "On the subject of fast bowlers as an Australian i think McGrath, Gillespie, Lee & Co. Benefited HUGELY from having attacking captains (steve waugh) who would persist with big slip cordons and reliable catchers behind the wicket. Do you feel that captains tend to take the slips out too early and put a sweeper in nowadays?" Spot-on mate, damn that deep point, I say

1.2

Junaid Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, Dilshan gets going with a gentle forward push to a length ball that takes it between the bowler and the non-striker

1.3

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, bends low to one slanted in and carefully pushes it towards extra cover

Reza: "Heartening to see Gul fulfill his promise on the test level rather than just being a great t20 bowler. His lines have been Mcgrathesque this series!"

1.4

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, Junaid gets it to jag in from outside off stump, Sanga was pushing forward and across, and was fortunate that the inside edge did not carry to short leg

1.6

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, tight single, a touch too close, Sanga worked with the angle in front of midwicket and set off, direct hit would have tested Dilshan

End of over 2 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 10/1

    • KC Sangakkara 3 (5b)
    • TM Dilshan 3 (2b)
    • Junaid Khan 1-0-6-0

2.1

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, pitches it up to Sanga, who stays balanced and low and defends off the front foot

2.2

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, moves away close to off stump, Sanga has to play at it, he does well to open the face and softly push to gully

2.3

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, fine leave, Sanga being tested by Gul with a sharply climbing back of a length ball not far from off, but he shoulders arms in the end

Reza: "Totally agree with Daniel. Apart from Imran and Wasim Akram, Pakistan cricket captains have been defensively inept in not giving their fast bowlers and spinners attacking fields. Case in point being Afridi in the Mohali Semi-Final in not giving a slip to Ajmal when Tendulkar edged him at least three times to the third man fence!"

2.4

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, what's happening? Sanga wants the single, he just wants it really bad, he races down the track after pushing towards mid on, Dilshan is not moving, Sanga applies the brakes and turns back, and scrambles back with an awkward half-dive in the end

2.5

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, he had a prod at it, he had, Gul getting it to jag away from back of a length with the angle, Sanga held an angled bat out at it, fortunate not to nick it

Majid Butt: "Reza: Probably because you do not expect too many edges from the great batsman."

3.1

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, Junaid gets it to bounce now from short of a length, Sanga shuffles, opens up and blocks it off the high part of the bat

3.2

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, pitched up, inviting indiscretion, a prod maybe, a drive possibly, Sanga takes a look and flags it through

3.3

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, goes into Sanga now with the angle from over the stumps, he plays with a straight bat, well in front of pad, positive defence

    • TM Dilshan 3 (2b)
    • Junaid Khan 2-0-10-0

Sam: "Reason why recent captains are defensive are also the amount of runs being scored now in modern day tests with the exploit of T20. Captains now want to avoid run leakage!"

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, Gul goes straightish outside off stump from a length, he gets bounce as well, like Junaid, Dilshan leaves

4.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 1 run, well done, they take on the man at shortish midwicket with a soft push off middle and leg and a dash across

Saad: "The pitches in Asia does not support fast bowlers so giving more slips to them is useless. I remember McGrath use to bowl full day against India and could not get success."

4.3

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, this is good stuff from Gul, bends it across the left-hander and gets the ball to climb high, but Sanga has already let it go

4.4

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, another fine leave, he is beginning to find some sort of rhythm, Sanga, there was a lot of certainly about that leave

4.5

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, gets behind the line of a length ball closer to off and defends

smudgeon: "I have memories of when I was younger of frequently seeing Australians bowling to 3 slips & a gully (sometimes two) & a bat-pad. Mind you, they had Mark Waugh, Taylor & Boonie in close to rely on. Magic hands." Magic alright

4.6

Umar Gul to Sangakkara, no run, jags away and bounces with the angle outside off, Sanga flows into an untroubled leave

Junaid Khan to Sangakkara, no run, he is looking in fine nick Sanga, finds point this time with a cracking stroke to a length ball

5.5

6.6

Umar Gul to Dilshan, FOUR, and again Dilshan goes after a pitched-up delivery, it moved away but once Dilshan had got the front foot out and swung with tremendous speed, it was only clattering to the cover boundary

End of over 7 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 27/1

    • TM Dilshan 12 (11b 2x4)
    • KC Sangakkara 10 (26b 1x4)

Nikhil: "That also means that they have bowled well enough to generate that amount of chances."

8.1

Umar Gul to Dilshan, no run, that looked pretty close, but Dilshan managed an inside edge that saved him, else Gul would had him plumb in front with a fullish one that swung in late

8.2

Umar Gul to Dilshan, 2 runs, tries it again, but it carries in too much with the angle, Dilshan plays it well too, pushing straight down the ground with bat well in front of pad

West Indies vs. Sri Lanka. Brian Lara hit his career best 169 to take the West Indies to 333. Sri Lanka responded with 329 all out.
