Pakistan v Sri Lanka ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Pakistan v Sri Lanka

Pakistan won by 21 runs

14.59 The teams are out. Hafeez marks his guard. Malinga to begin

14.55 About five minutes to go. Still see a lot of empty stands, hopefully they will fill up as the evening progresses.

14.30: Good day everyone and welcome to the coverage of the third ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This is Kanishkaa Balachandran, returning after a year's hiatus. I was away in Sheffield, UK for my masters degree. Good to be back! A special hello to all the folks in Sheffield who may be following this coverage.

We're just a few minutes away from the toss and teams.

Toss: Pakistan have won the toss and they will bat. Misbah has announced just the one change - Sohail Tanvir comes in for Aizaz Cheema.Sri Lanka are unchanged.

Enough of Sheffield, now to Dubai. It was a bit of a face-saving win for Sri Lanka in the second match in what was shaping up to be a difficult tour. Now, it sets up the rest of this series nicely. Mahela Jayawardene mentioned something in his most recent column. He said that with the rule changes in ODIs (new balls at either end and Powerplay tweaks) we may see more scores within 250. I hope this trend sets in because I'm sick and tired of 300-plus scores!

0.1

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, there wasn't much bounce there, Hafeez stayed on the backfoot and managed to angle it wide of point

0.2

Malinga to Imran Farhat, FOUR, that's a gift from Malinga, rare one that too, generous half volley outside off and Farhat was happy to thump that past cover

0.3

Malinga to Imran Farhat, 1 run, the inswinging yorker already! Well kept out by Farhat, square leg dived and got a hand to it, time to sneak a single

0.4

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, a gift on the pads down the leg side, Hafeez shuffled just a touch and clipped it to the fine leg boundary, poor ball, deserved what it got

0.5

0.6

Malinga to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, played down the pitch and Malinga failed to get a hand to it, no damage as mid-off runs across to pick it up

So an easy start for Pakistan

Fernando to Imran Farhat, 2 runs, another slower one and he tries to drive straight but gets an inside edge towards midwicket, gets a couple anyway

6.5

Fernando to Imran Farhat, 1 wide, short and wide down the leg side, Farhat wasn't quick enough to pull that past the keeper

6.5

Fernando to Imran Farhat, no run, ouch! Bang on the helmet! Farhat just didn't see that, he was rooted to the crease, he didn't look like attempting a shot, wasn't quick enough to swerve away, it's got him on the right side of his forehead, he didn't flinch initially, then took his helmet off, the physio comes out. No need to panic though, he's conscious, on his feet and just trying to get his bearings back

Sarfraz Ahmed    1* (1b)      SL Malinga    8-0-43-1

46.1

Malinga to Sarfraz Ahmed, no run, another inswinging yorker, how does a batsman fresh at the crease put that away? The ball dribbles to the on side

46.6

Malinga to Sarfraz Ahmed, OUT, trademark Malinga, Inswinging yorker, Sarfraz makes room but only manages a thick inside edge onto his stumps, what a comeback by Sri Lanka

Ali Zaman: "This ODI match is following the trend of Aus vs SA match in every way. A big opening partnership (150 plus), and then a dramatic collapse."

47.1

Fernando to Younis Khan, no run, pushed towards point

47.2

Fernando to Younis Khan, FOUR, digs it in short and within Younis' comfort zone, sat up nicely for him to pull it down to long leg, no fielders there so good placement

47.3

Fernando to Younis Khan, 1 run, slower ball outside off and he opens the face and angles it to third man for a single

47.4

Fernando to Sohail Tanvir, no run, Tanvir didn't see that at all I think, short of a length and the ball hit the handle and lobbed up, fortunately short of the fielders

47.5

Fernando to Sohail Tanvir, no run, bangs it in short this time and the ball fizzes past Tanvir who tries to pull, quick bouncer

47.6

Fernando to Sohail Tanvir, FOUR, repeats the shot but this time he manages to get enough wood to send the ball flying past the vacant slips position and down to third man

End of over 48 (9 runs) Pakistan 243/7 (RR: 5.06)
Sohail Tanvir    4* (3b 1x4)      CRD Fernando    9-1-57-0
Younis Khan    35* (46b 2x4)      SL Malinga    9-0-46-2

48.2

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, yorker outside off and he jams it down to mid-off, singles again, they need more of those boundaries - streaky or not

48.3

Malinga to Younis Khan, no run, jams out another yorker but straight to point

Third man comes in and fine leg is in as well

48.4

Malinga to Younis Khan, FOUR, exactly what we meant by streaky, he hoicks that from outside off and he gets a thick inside edge which sneaks past the stumps and beats short fine leg

48.5

Malinga to Younis Khan, 1 run, shortish in length outside off, he cuts to deep point

48.6

Malinga to Sohail Tanvir, FOUR, the fine leg may have gone back for Tanvir but he too had no chance, swinging yorker on the toes, a little but of wood was enough to send that on its way to fine leg

End of over 49 (11 runs) Pakistan 254/7 (RR: 5.18)
Sohail Tanvir    9* (5b 2x4)      SL Malinga    10-0-57-2
Younis Khan    41* (50b 3x4)      CRD Fernando    9-1-57-0

Here's Fernando

49.1

Fernando to Younis Khan, 1 run, tried to muscle that down the ground but he mistimed it towards mid-on

49.2

Fernando to Sohail Tanvir, 1 leg bye, slower ball and short as well, Tanvir swung too early and the ball clipped his body and rolled to the off side

49.3

Fernando to Younis Khan, OUT, that's a direct hit at the bowler's end and that looked very close even at normal speed, the ball was pushed to mid-on and Prasanna released the ball immediately after gathering it, Younis was well short and dropped his bat after reaching the crease, the third umpire confirms it

Younis Khan run out 42 (82m 52b 3x4 0x6) SR: 80.76

Here's Umar Gul

49.4

Fernando to Sohail Tanvir, 1 run, yorker on middle and squeezed out to the off side

49.5

Fernando to Umar Gul, no run, Gul fails to read a slower bouncer, the variations in pace have confounded quite a few Pakistan batsmen today

49.6

Fernando to Umar Gul, no run, two dot balls to signal the end of the innings, another bouncer and Gul swings at thin air

Like I said just now, Sri Lanka brought out the variations and made the batsmen struggle for every run after the opening stand was broken. Razzaq and Younis - though he made 42 - looked oddly out of sorts. I wouldn't criticise the move to bring in Razzaq early because he is a proven hitter. It just wasn't his day with the bat, simple. But credit should go to SL and also their fielders for applying the choke.

18.45pm: Nevertheless, 257 is still a very competitive score and I expect a good fight on out hands. Join us in about 30 minutes.

Rehan: "Well Pakistan should have to make a change in batting order & shoud bring Shoaib Malik in the side instead of Younis Khan who is a good batsman of Test not an ODI."

End of over 50 (3 runs) Pakistan 257/8
Umar Gul    0* (2b)      CRD Fernando    10-1-59-0
Sohail Tanvir    10* (7b 2x4)      SL Malinga    10-0-57-2
