Pakistan v Sri Lanka 2013-14 November 25, 2013

SL call on Vithanage and Seekkuge Prasanna

ESPNcricinfo staff
61

Sri Lanka have included batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage and legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna in their ODI squad for the series against Pakistan in the UAE in December. Vithanage was a replacement for Mahela Jayawardene, who asked not to be considered, as his wife is expecting their first child in December.

Prasanna, meanwhile, came in for Ajantha Mendis, who was dropped from the squad despite not playing an ODI in the recent series against New Zealand. Prasanna last played an ODI for Sri Lanka in March 2012, against Pakistan during the Asia Cup in Dhaka. Vithanage is yet to play a limited-overs international for Sri Lanka, but had played in the home Test series against Bangladesh in March.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was also retained in the ODI side, despite having been dropped after two failures during the New Zealand series. He will likely be the back-up opener to Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Perera, who marked a return to international form with a brisk fifty in the second Twenty20 against New Zealand.

The SLC release said Rangana Herath had been rested from the Twenty20 squad because of the volume of cricket he has played in recent times, and given Sri Lanka's busy schedule until the 2015 World Cup. He does find a place in the ODI squad, however.

Ramith Rambukwella's selection in the T20 squad is subject to him recovering from the knee injury he sustained in the second T20 against New Zealand.

Fast bowler Shaminda Eranga remains out of the reckoning for limited overs cricket, although he had had moderate success, particularly in ODIs, during the year. Chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya said Suranga Lakmal had been preferred to Eranga because "Lakmal is bowling better at the moment". He however added that Eranga is likely to be part of the Test team.

Jayawardene is also expected to be available for the three Tests, which begin on December 31.

ODI squad Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Mathews (capt), Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Ashan Priyanjan, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Suranga Lakmal, Sachithra Senanayake, Rangana Herath, Seekkuge Prasanna

Twenty20 squad Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kusal Perera, Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kithuruwan Vithanage, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Seekkuge Prasanna, Suranga Lakmal, Sachithra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Ramith Rambukwella (subject to fitness)

Young SL batsmen will face a new type of challenge in this series from Pakistan fast bowlers who attack the stumps more in contrast to keep bowling steady outside the off stump lines. This can work either way, break or make. In the past it was similar, where likes of Aravinda and Sanath had some fabulous knocks taking that to their advantage, also there were times SL batting line up distorted as well. From the current lot likes of Mathews and Chandimal likes it back of the length than when it is full and swinging while Kusal Janith will prefer ball come close to him.

From Pakistan's point of view they should send Umar Akmal higher up the order at least #4 where he'll have the best impact (he has a great record against SL). In general Pakistan batsmen will find it easier against SL bowlers after facing SA attack 1000 times.

    My team for ODIs. 1.Kusal 2.Dilshan 3.Chandi 4.Sanga 5.Thiri 6.Mathews 7.Thisara 8.Kulasekara 9.Sachithra 10.Malinga 11.herath

We must give chandi no.03 position. He has an impressive rechord(avg:50+)(s/R 80+) in that position.he is play as an aggresive player in at no.03.using him at lower middle order is invain.Sanga must go down to no.04.because mahela is not there.then sanga can take the resonsibility of the middle order.batting thirimanne at no.05 can prevent serious batting failaures of the team because he is a good solid player.mathews, thisara, kulasekara can hit the ball very hard.they must play no.6,7,8.Sachithra is always a match winner.Malinga, hearth are our top bowlers.

if chandimal & Thirimanna play in T20 games the opposition will be happy but not sri lankans. Dear Pakistan fans this is not the best team from Sri lanka. there are lot of talented players are there with out an opportunity.

  • Sinhaya on November 30, 2013, 12:35 GMT

No doubt the series will be exciting. Pakistan though has the upper hand. It is paramount that SL youngsters such as Thirimanne, Chandimal, Kushal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kithruwan Vithanage excel to the maximum. If not, their careers will be virtually over. We can certainly expect non stop cricket as UAE is known to be free of rain for 10 months of the year if I am not wrong. Pakistan has lot to prove since they became the first ever sub continent team to win an ODI series in SA which means they have reversed their 1-4 defeat at the hands of the Proteas in UAE this month. Pakistan's fielding and batting will be a weak link, but their bowlers can be very lethal as far as the brittle SL batting is concerned.

Last time SL played in UAE, Pak won and the last time Pak played in SL, SL won. So this should be a good even contest, as Sri Lanka have improved a lot in the last 2-3 years. Mahela's absence should be a blessing in disguise to allow a young player to be groomed. Will be good to watch Sanga vs Ajmal again!

Kithruwans List A record is not that impressive. I dont know how he got the place ahead of angelp perera. He was given only one chance, then after that he is never considered.

  • chandimasl on November 26, 2013, 13:54 GMT

The chances given to thirimanna and chandimal in the t20 team is not what is expected by the most of sl fans. I think mathews should undertake the t20 captaincy as soon as possible.and also it is important to include two hard hitters tothe team.because thiri and chandi do not seem to be hitting hard.and also kusal janith should be coached well by the batting coach.because he always try to advance down the wicket for spinners.once he trapped by ashvin.if he continues to do it he will struggle against ajmal. And also we should find few good fast bowlers.

  • on November 26, 2013, 12:15 GMT

SL XI for ODIs should be: 1. Chandmal 2. Thirimanne 3. Kusal 4. Sanga/Dilshan 5. Vithanage 6. Priyanjan 7. Mathews 8. Kulasekara 9. Senanayake 10. Prassana 11. Malinga (Since chandimal & thirimanne prefer to build their innings rather than cut loose they should open. And if they play too many dot balls, kusal perera can come in at 3 and bring up the run rate. And either Sanga or Dilshan should be at 4 in case of a top order collapse. Vithanage & Priyanjan along with Mathews should be in the lower middle order because they are quick and can fire in the latter overs. Kulasekara, Malinga, and senanayake should be in for obvious reasons. AndPrassana will be useful with the bat and effective with the ball. Herath should be rested for at least the first two ODIs).

  • on November 26, 2013, 11:54 GMT

I think Sri Lanka is taking tough decisions now which will help them in long term when Dilshan, Sangakarra and Jayawardene are not there. Because, its this trio alongwith Mathews who is holding up Sri Lanka's batting in virtually every game. So playing youngsters in T20 and giving them chance in ODI is a good policy by Jayasuria. Pakistan might also give chance to some youngsters. If you think short term, then ofcourse, Dilshan,Sangakarra and Jayawardene are a must. Nonetheless more exciting will be Test series when the trio will be batting. Also Pakistan batting will be feeling more confident facing SLankan pacers after facing SA's pace attack for so long this year. So they will get the fruit of difficult last month.

  • on November 26, 2013, 11:30 GMT

    Niroshan dickwella right option

  • Llik2 on November 26, 2013, 11:15 GMT

Srilanka can never win by playing so many offspinners like mathews, perrera, lakmal nd senanayeke.pak should give them hammer blow.

  • Perera32 on November 26, 2013, 11:14 GMT

Not sure about Seekkuge Prassana. He has a lovely action but he doesn't spin the ball at all. I rank Jeewan Mendis and Dilruwan Perera as better Leggies than Prassanna.

  • on November 26, 2013, 10:17 GMT

I am saying the same thing that it is blessing in disguise. The sooner SL will find out his replacement it is better for SL. He is not in a good touch for quite sometime. No one is indispensable , in a team game no player can survive only on his past form or contribution.

  • SohailMirza on November 26, 2013, 9:48 GMT

This sri lankan team looks very week except Kumhar (an outstanding player and it is always treat to watch him).. all other players are okay but not as good as they had Murli, Vaas, Jaysuria, Marven...i think Sri cricket is going back to age of before 1996... still wish him success for future as i do respect them a lot as a team.

  • on November 26, 2013, 9:34 GMT

last time pak played sri lanka in uae they won all formats in dominating manner..for sri lanka ajantha mendis has never been successful against pakistan..jeevan mendis and herath were successful along with perera nd kulasekara againnst pakistan but they have to work on their batting..i think apart from sanga everyone will struggle including dilshan

  • Llik2 on November 26, 2013, 9:34 GMT

Pakistan will win this series .because they played lots of cricket against tough sa.they will feel fish in fresh water by facing srilankan quick spinners.

  • Sachit1979 on November 26, 2013, 8:16 GMT

I think Sri Lanka should have rested veterans Dilshan and Sangakkara atleast for t20 to test their bench strength. Promising Chathuranga DeSilva is missing out in both of these squads. Pace bowling department still has same old names. They need to new faces there as existing ones are not working out any more.

  • SLslider on November 26, 2013, 8:03 GMT

Its a blessing in disguise. Mahela is way past his prime and even in his prime he was average compared to players like sanga and dilli and we all know how he performs outside subcontinent. I believe we can have a finisher in place of Mahela and move thirimanne up the order. chandimal and thirri are no finishers they at best can setup a game for big hitters. Matthews has become a bits and pieces cricketer. My God we are short of talent but still should have faith in whatever we have. Mahela will not be useful in WC 2015 on fast pitches. I predict he will have an abysmal 2014 and at that time we will not even have his replacement so we should include another hard hitter who is a good fielder and can bowl as bit. Kinda like maxwell a complete package. Sanga and dilli are the way to go with youngsters.

  • MDCP on November 26, 2013, 6:59 GMT

Although selectors name youngsters into the team there is simply no development for the future. Lahiru, & Chandimal are made to bat in unsuitable positions with hardly any opportunities to gain experience from building an inning. Ashan P in the squad but no games. Angelo Perera 1 bad inning and few games without the opportunity to bat and now he is not even in the squad. Chathuranga de silva was in a few squads not a single game and he is out. Only player who will get more than enough opportunities is Mr. Rambukwella and we know why. Pathetic selection!!! I feel this will be Thiris or Chandimals last series before 1 of them get dropped bse both will struggle big time against Pakistans quality spinners.

Malinga must be rested for his private commitments like IPL, Big Bash, etc. His run rate was the highest among our bowlers in the last series, as usual. Let a youngster get a chance for the future of SL as Malinga has already got obsolete.

New talent in both teams will only benefit World Cricket.

Well that's gonna be an interesting series as well after Pak finish their assignments in SA. Sri Lanka need to enthuse young blood in their XI keeping in view the WCs on the way. Sangakkara and Mahela have done tremendous job and served SL proudly through thick and thin coupled by Dilshan and Malinga since our great Asian star de Silva's retirement. Pak vs SL matches are always a big treat as they always play competitive game and give enormous entertainment to their fans. Would love to see Pak keep putting their needful trust in their especially Sohaib, Bhatti and Anwar as they need fair chances to groom and bask on all the glories they truly deserve as they have raw talent need to be moulded into charismatic character which is also 'cry of the day'. If these young talent go through and keep themselves abreast to the requirements then I don't think Pak future is bleak as it looked at one stage when Pak was under performing in UAE in ODIs vs SA!!! Best of luck to both Pak & SL.

i can't understand why mr.Sanath is not choosing malinga pushpakumara he is a good replacement for rangana. He is doing best and he is the best leftspinner in domestic games and also srilankaA team games.last tour of wi he got 7or8 wickets in one inning.

Thanks for dropping Ajantha Mendis...if you watch the tapes of T20 SL v Kiwis played recently...just watch the 14th over when Ajantha Mendis is bowling. Sanga is pleading him to bowl well. That should not have happened. I do not think he is going to bowl well with the Pakistan team in UAE. Even Malinga has lost his rhythm and gives plenty of runs but he is a wicket taking bowler. By the way where is Angelo Perera? Is it end of the road for Upul Tharanga, Kapu and Jeewan Mendis?

  • on November 25, 2013, 16:53 GMT

It will be interesting to see whether Sanath will select Kusal, Vithanage and Ramith in the same T20 side...! for the final eleven against Pakistan to Play

  • PadMarley on November 25, 2013, 16:22 GMT

My honest opinion, this side should face some absolutely tough series, like the 95 Australian tour. Let the youngster face some serious heat... let Angelo put on the spot with some serious decisions ... that's only way to grow these guys to the next level. You might throw in many names like, where is that name and why this name etc.. at the end of the day though there was immense talent in the new generation, I have not seen some serious character...

  • on November 25, 2013, 16:10 GMT

hearth is our best chance in one days I don't so many people miss his role in this team he and senanayaka is our best in this serious and in the world cup these two are the best when it comes to India and Pakistan and they have no problem against others as well but need to handle them well by captain if they do well we will win this one against Pakistan and the 2015 world cup as well.

  • on November 25, 2013, 15:54 GMT

come on Lions u can do it even in the absence of Mahela...! it is very good opportunity for young players to show their colours! vithanage is very good tallented player and he deserves chance to play in sl team, but the inclusion of ajantha from the odi series is not expected mendis should be in all formats of the game bcoz he is mystery spinner... danajaya and senanayake both have also very good variation and they r the big asset for srilankan team! young lions should take responsibility and senior sl lions sanga, dilshan and mahela should give support to young lions! lanka have bright future bcoz they have very good tallented players like kusal, thimane, chandi, vithanage, dananjaya, karunaratne etc... they need support from seniors sanga, dilly and mahi! i hope so angelo will be the good leader for sl team...! my best wishes and prays always with Srilankan Cricket Team...! i'm pakistani but i love lankan team and pak too

  • on November 25, 2013, 14:52 GMT

Well Most of the youngster's are getting a go that's good for SL cricket. But there is down side to this to by any chance if Pakistan gives beating like last time in UAE most of the young players wouldn't come out of it but we only pray and hope that the seniors will take the responsibility show the juniors the way forward.I still think srilanka is missing a trick not playing geniene leg spinner in there side. I know Seekuge Prassana is playing but I have played against him and i find him a more of a containing bowler then a wicket taking one.So i feel SL really need to look at this with a very keen eye. Hope for the best......

  • on November 25, 2013, 14:16 GMT

  • cricktwins on November 25, 2013, 13:45 GMT

srilanka cricket giving chances to youngsters since 2007 cb series.. except jaya, sanga, dilshan, malinga, mathews, kula.. others are just passengers in the team. In one series they get oppurtunity and out they go in the next series..Srilanka relies heavily on jaya, sanga in batting and they keep unearthing new spinners every series.. herath, senanayake, dhananjaya, jeevan mendis, ajantha mendis, suraj randiv. so much spinners rotating each and every series.. Sl pace department looks so fragile and when compared to india its even worse.. when the old guns retire sl are gonna suffer a lot.. hope uae tour helps srilanka to find good replacement in future..

  • Nimal723 on November 25, 2013, 13:36 GMT

  • Lakpj on November 25, 2013, 13:28 GMT

Good move to bring Prasanna he is a decent leg spinner and Pakistan do struggle a bit with leg spin. Saw that with Tahir. This will be a good opportunity to give some chances for the youngsters. And in tests with Dilshan announcing his retirement there will be good opportunity to do some more experiments

  • Prabhash1985 on November 25, 2013, 13:25 GMT

Kithruwan deserves his position. I'm not sure about Prasanna, couldn't check much about him before writing this comment. What happened to Akila Dananjaya? Why don't SLC give him enough opportunity? Kusal Silva deserves a place in this weak team for sure. Please be fair to everyone.

  • Yasi_Gee on November 25, 2013, 13:06 GMT

  • tdslbuwa on November 25, 2013, 12:39 GMT

Well this is very good news for SL cricket... Kithruwan Vithanage should play all 3 formats...(although his list A record is poor) and he is a better batsman than Thiri and Chandi in limited over matches... So T20 team should be... Kushal,Dili,Chandi,Sanga,Kithruwan,Mathewes,Thisara,Nuwan,Sachi,Mali,Mendis... But in ODI matches Kushal Janith will play as a opener and Thiri will come at 3 so Kithruwan will have to wait a while..So ODI team should be....Kushal,Dili,Thiri,Sanga,Chandi,Mathewes,Thisara,Nuwan,Sachi,Seekuge,Mali... Good Luck SL.

    What happened to Angelo Perera?

Vithanage is a great replacement for Mahela and he is a very good player of spin. Hope he & Kusal Perera will get a decent opportunity on this tour.

This is a very good move by the Sri Lankan selectors and good luck Kithu.

Where are Dilshan Munaweera, Suraj Randiv, Nuwan Pradeep and Akila Dhananjaya ? Why not resting either Kula or Malinga ?
