Sri Lanka win with two balls to spare

  shares 221

Sri Lanka 287 for 8 (Sangakkara 58, Junaid 3-52) beat Pakistan 284 for 4 (Shehzad 124, Misbah 59*) by two wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Angelo Mathews has not often lived up to his finisher's tag in recent months, but he brought together all the qualities that make fine international captains, as he led Sri Lanka to the biggest successful chase in Dubai. Mathews' hand brimmed with poise, skill and fighting nous and though he did not see out the win, he had helped bring the equation down to four off five deliveries. Pakistan believed they were still in the match in the last over, thanks to Junaid Khan's intense spells, but Sri Lanka's batting depth eventually helped them level the five-match series. The visitors had two balls to spare when they passed the target of 285, with two wickets in hand.

Mathews' score of 47 off 44 did not do justice to his contribution, as his calming influence was vital to the final push. He oversaw it all like a foreman at a roadworks construction site: doing little of the heavy lifting himself, but supervising and directing the operation from close up. Occasionally he chastised staff errors, like when Seekkuge Prasanna slogged dangerously at Shahid Afridi.

He even pulled stunts like deliberately running slow between wickets to induce a shy at the stumps, which in turn would yield an overthrow. Mathews had hit only one four in his first 42 runs, and having eroded the target with a stream of tense runs into the outfield, he seemed to have applied the coup de grace when he twisted the equation in Sri Lanka's favour with a four off Junaid in the penultimate over. But with four needed off the last over, he pulled Afridi straight to short midwicket.

Kumar Sangakkara had struck a responsible half-century, and Tillakaratne Dilshan, Dinesh Chandimal and Nuwan Kulasekara had all played important roles to set up the finish. Dimuth Karunaratne batted way out of position at No.9 after being parachuted into the team when Lahiru Thirimanne picked up a last-minute injury, but his unbeaten 16 alongside Mathews helped keep Junaid, and to a lesser extent Saeed Ajmal, at bay.

Pakistan's innings had also been a work of consummate batting intelligence, as they hit the second-highest total at the venue and lost only four wickets doing it. Like a snowball heading down a slope, it began cautiously, gathered force through the middle and dealt considerable damage towards the end of its course. Ahmed Shehzad had been the mastermind, composing 124 unruffled, unhurried runs, before Misbah-ul-Haq contributed his almost mandatory half-century to the innings. It was Shehzad's fourth ton in ODIs, and Misbah's 14th fifty in 2013. Cruelly for the Pakistan captain, and really through little fault of his own, it came in yet another loss.

Sri Lanka bowled better lines to induce caution from Pakistan early in the innings, but Shehzad's measured approach appeared to have been determined before the match had even begun. Eschewing ambitious strokes, his first objective was to establish steady beat of singles and twos. Even on occasions when Sri Lanka strayed, gaps and not boundaries, were Shehzad's priority. The only insecure moment in Shehzad's progress arrived in the 17th over when Thisara Perera dived hard to his left at short fine leg to collect an aerial flick to the leg side that was deemed to be too doubtful to be given out by the third umpire.

Shehzad had struck only three fours in his first 50 runs, off 75 deliveries, and the team itself only hit seven boundaries in the first half of their innings. But when the balls had worn on a pitch that held no terrors, the scoring rate managed a steady incline, with little added risk to the batsmen. Singles and twos remained the preferred form of advancement during the middle overs, as Senanayake and Prasanna sent down 20 overs of cheap but non-threatening spin.

Misbah and Shehzad's 105-run stand set Pakistan up beautifully for their final surge, and Afridi embellished his record in this tour and against Sri Lanka by providing the final salvo. His unbeaten 15-ball 30 was instrumental in Pakistan taking 93 off the last 10 overs. Misbah remained unbeaten on 59 at the end of the innings.

Dilshan and Kusal Perera were uncharacteristically watchful at the outset of Sri Lanka's reply, and neither batsman appeared to be flustered by the relative paucity of boundaries - almost in imitation of Pakistan's batting blueprint. The ease of their progress had promised a fruitful stand, until Dilshan asked too much of his partner. Having hit two fours off Ajmal's first two balls in the match, he chopped the next one straight to point and called Kusal through. The direct-hit found the batsman well out of his crease for 16, and ended the partnership for 49.

Dilshan didn't survive long after that. His own run-out was more misfortune than misjudgment. His bat got stuck in the ground centimetres from safety, and he lost his grip as the ball hit the stumps.

Sangakkara's 94-run stand for the third wicket with Chandimal provided heft to Sri Lanka's chase, and that partnership conformed to the trend of the match. It began sedately but collected momentum as it grew more substantial. The pair only made 16 off their first 33 balls together, but found freedom once Junaid's first fearsome spell ended after the 22nd over. Working the ball more easily into the gaps and finding the boundary with increasing regularity, 66 came off their last 59 balls together - a period that set Sri Lanka back on track after the early stagnation.

Junaid returned to wipe out the middle order though, finding reverse swing as he zeroed in on the stumps at pace - dismissing Perera, Chandimal and Prasanna by firing balls through their defenses.

Sri Lanka had stacked their side with allrounders, however, and the move paid off. Kulasekara's 32 from 26 helped ease a stiff asking rate before Karunaratne - Sri Lanka's Test opener - came in to help Mathews take the visitors home.

Credit to Sri Lanka for their win. From a Pakistan point of view probably 30 additional runs could have been added with a bit of strong running between the wickets. Also the younger players need to be more aware of how to prevent additional runs - The captain needs to be encouraging fielders and should be more hands on especially when to going get's tough. From the bowling point of view Sohail Tanvir just isn't consistent over 10 overs. I wouldn't bring back Umar Gul he's had his time . Need to go with Junaid however Irfan will have fitness issues at ODI levels. For me play the young pace bowlers and give them experience. The spinners all have ability however I still say Hafeez should bat at 6 since he struggles against serious pace which you will get in big tournaments. This series is a test for both teams and a good chance to experiment with the younger players.

Well played Sri Lanka and Pakistan. So glad that all 4 games so far in this series have been nail biters keeping the crowd at the edge of their seats. No doubt Pakistan has found a set of good ODI batsmen as proven by Maqsood, Sherjeel Khan and Ahmed Shezhad. Hope they impress in tests too. Sri Lankan bowling is a worry in the death overs as Pakistani batters tackled them well.

Great to see Chandimal back in the runs with 2 40 plus scores. The way Sanga batted with Chandimal was simply brilliant. Karunaratne is better than Thirimanne for ODIs and he must come down the order. I think Senanayake and Kulasekara should be sent higher up the order to bat as per the situation.

Congratulations to Misbah Ul Haq for being the highest ODI scorer for the year and I know that no one can beat it. I wish he plays cricket for many more years. Looking forward to an exciting series and thank you to fans of both sides for arriving in good numbers to the "Ring of Fire" stadium in Dubai.

Sri Lanka should have batted first after winning the Toss. It is very difficult to chase big totals at night since the ball tends to swing more and also the spinners get ability to spin the ball in the 2nd half. SL must have thought about the Due at night but Due is very less in the winter in UAE with the winds blowing. Anyway......well done Sri Lanka!

i just dont get what bilawal bhatti is doing....if a bowler having an average speed of 140kph is still not capable of bowling yorkers after 16-17 overs in both ODIs...then he is of no use to the pakistani team...Pakistan needed breakthrough when the Mathews and karunaratne partnership was being build but bhatti with such fast pace, instead of bowling yorkers and doing tight bowling, entertained them with sweet and easy-as-pie short lengths giving them full room to smash the ball across the boundary...if he continues on doing such preposterous and immature bowling then the selectors will have no other choice other than to put in a replacement ...he has to give his best at bowling....

Chill guys, Pakistan is certainly making a team for the future, that is why you see our second string of bowlers playing despite some injuries. This could be done to put responsibility on the shoulders of the batsman if they want to win, setting them up for the WT20 and WC. Prior to that our players made as much runs as they thought we can easily defend, which was crossing the 200 mark. Even than I think our bowlers have done well in all the games for the first 40 overs than lack of experience took over to finish the game. At least now we know both Tanvir and Bhatti should not be in the team for the long run. Bhatti is just under utilizing his ability to bowl the Yorkers, he was unplayable in SA. Good luck to both the teams. Well played Sri-Lanka.

From Sri Lanka's point of view they need to focus on 3 things; a. in the short term, think that you can get Afridi out and he does have his weaknesses (and work on those). Do not try to restrain him - try to get him out. b. Your fielding stinks. Work on your fielding. The Sri Lankan team easily gives away 20-30 runs due to dreadful fielding. c. In the long term, PLEASE make sure Mahela does not return to this team and spoil everything. He is certainly beyond his 'use by' date.

For Pakistan, a. consider giving Afridi a promotion. Let him destroy the Sri Lankan attack as he has certainly won the psychological battle with the Sri Lankans. b. consider dropping Umar Akmal with a possible all-rounder. He is currently a waste of a position. c. Where on earth is Shoib Malik? Try to bring SM or even Abdul Razaak.

@Prema1948 ; Thirimanne wasn't dropped. He was injured just before the match. Get your facts right before start moaning. You are an ill-informed individual who always talk about others with malice. And your Ajantha Mendis is nothing but a "has-been" bowler now. He has been made by sub-continental players a long long long time ago. The dude can't even spin the ball. PAK batsmen would have feasted on him , if he had been picked. He is only good against countries like Aus, Eng, SA and NZ. And who the hell is J&P ?? And stop repeating same thing about J&P , schoolboy cricketers, selfish seniors and blah blah blah.. over n over again. Its annoying.

  • Desihungama on December 21, 2013, 14:13 GMT

I think when too many players are nearing milestones scoring gets slower. Pakistan middle order could have pushed for more but Shehzad on top has to improve his S/R. His career SR of 68 is not upto modern game but then in Pakistan one bad series and you are dropped so I guess scoring albeit slowly is more important than playing with fluency even when not scoring. Hats off to SL for pulling this one off. Even content.

  • mark2011 on December 21, 2013, 13:51 GMT

SL need to controll Afridi.. all the matches he is simply hitting big sixes and SL havent been abe to get him out early or restrict him scoring fast also when SL bats, they tend to give away wkts to him and struggle to score runs...need to sort out these issues to have btter results in next matches..

the two overs by sohail in in early 40 overs costing 30 odd did the real damage for PAK , and that completely changed the complexion of the game for Pak . I have said this numerous times that Sohail is a SPECIALIST T20 bowler but ODI is not his cup of tea as it requires more overs to be bowled thus requiring more consistency which he lacks utterly . To be honest we dont really now what kind of form Umar Gul is ,despite a five for in domestic but International cricket is a complete different deal . Pick up a genuine fast bowler like Ehsan Adil/Sadaf Hussain/Aizaz cheema ..... they are proper fast bowlers !

  • on December 21, 2013, 12:31 GMT

Last minutes panic in the fielding and poor utilization of bowlers cost this match to Pakistan We had a very economical hafiz bowling wasted with the second spell of costly Tanveer

  • Ratne on December 21, 2013, 12:07 GMT

@Prem1948 Ur love with Ajantha Mendis & Thirimanne is understandable... but what they are out of form players .. there is no space for a person who cant bat in a pressure situation in these days... Senanayake & Prassana are doing their best. so no space for Ajantha. I wonder why u dont say single word about Non performers like "Suranga Lakmal" ... just because he went to the same school , which SL big headed fast bowling coach's schools was enough for him to get into the team.. but have n't contributed significantly to win a match. I think chaturanga silva, Jayarathna, Madushanka are much better players in domestic level.. Finally Sangas and Chandimals partnership laid the foundation..

  • RuwanFer on December 21, 2013, 12:04 GMT

Good team work and a great win by SL. Kula Sobers u beauty :) done it again!

But well played both teams. If Junaid didn't bowl that spell the taste of the win would have been lesser. That's why a win is more memorable when the opposition is also contribute to the entertainment.

Although Dimuth did a good job by staying at the wicket it was a poor selection. Going forward we need to groom a proper middle order batsman. Best in-form batsman for the job in the squad was Ashan Priyajan. Can't believe they didn't give him a chance ever after Thiri's injury. Also Dimuth is important as a test opener. His game can be deteriorated by playing at 5/6 in the ODI side.

  • on December 21, 2013, 11:54 GMT

I don't understand the psychic of our Pakistani fans.....its really these days like an Indian one,,,,,one match the team wins everyone is a hero and the next day they loose everyone should be out of the team. I personally feel that this is the best combination of players we have since Misbah took over the captaincy,,,,,,At last Pakistani batsmen started to appear on top of the batting lists,, bowling as always is the best we have,,,,,fielding yea it is a concern but still nothing to worry as it will get better more we play. Congrats to Misbah(really proud of you) on becoming the top scorer of this year. Hafeez , Shahzad, Sharjeel, Sohaib and Afridi are really showing their class and Junaid and Ajmal keeps rocking the opposition every match.... Seems the scoreline at the end of the series will be Pak 3 and SL - 2. WELL PLAYED ONCE AGAIN TO BOTH THE TEAMS.

  • Captainman on December 21, 2013, 11:25 GMT

Good series so far plus excellent crowd unlike the other series that is happening.

  • Stark62 on December 21, 2013, 11:23 GMT

I said before the series started, Rehman should have been replaced with a fast bowler like Sadaf or Ehsan because SL are good players of spin and Tanvir is only effective in T20's and what's worse, Anwar is a mediocre bowler too but he is somewhat better than Tanvir.

Also, Bahtti has been a big disappointment, after impressing everyone with his pace and death bowling during the SA series.

Lastly, Shezhad and Hafeez were the difference between a 300+ and 285 score because they played too slowly in the middle and Misbah wasted the powerplay.

I'm impressed with the Sri Lankan new talent. Nice to see young players are establishing. Its time for the old guns to step down and give more opportunities for the youngsters. See how chandimal perform himself at the number 4 position. Sanga has to step down and give number 3 position to him. He will perform better at no. 3 position. But I know sanga, he never likes to sacrifice his place to another.

  • TruthWarrior on December 21, 2013, 10:47 GMT

Mishbah messed up badly! 1) bad captaincy letting lank take singles against Ajmal when it was clear they will not attack him 2) persisting with Tanveer in his second spell - his over for 19 runs lost the game 3) poor fielding & over attacking the stumps without backing up - must learn to backup all the time

  • rylos on December 21, 2013, 10:38 GMT

Once again we see pakistan snatch defeat from the jaws of victory! poor bowling and fielding cost pakistan a win. Tanvir should never play for pakistan, a poor bowler, wouldnt play him in my sunday league side! the only decent bowler is ajmal and the fielding is a joke, the worst fielding side of all one day nations, they look so unfit, i think they`ve had one too many curries! very poor side.

  • ICCexpert.... on December 21, 2013, 10:38 GMT

Misbah and Hafeez are to be blamed because they scored so slowly, it was a 325 plus pitch. They played selfishly and not for the team like Sohaib and Sharjeel do. When will they learn to bat aggressively ? I think never.

  • yohandf on December 21, 2013, 10:38 GMT

Good win for SL .but they need to come up in both batting and bowling to survive in coming games . Our bowling has teared off specially the 5 th bowler ,Thisara is out of form and Mathews , Dilshan too not up to required level . So of thisaara can not make a point atleast in batting , he should be kept out for a batsman. Please retain Dimuth instead Thiri . Dimuth will atleast aggressive which is good for modern day cricket . Pakistan looking dangerous . hope for interesting 3 more matches .

This is one of the best teams we have for a long time even without Mahela and Herath. We have a great batting line up. Kusal is the best young player right now I think he is better than Sanath and Chandimal is playing really well and our alrounders giving so much support with the bat so we can chase any total in any day anywhere. Malinga needs to practice more as his speed is loosing he needs to loose some weight not the speed and the accuracy of his bowling. Thisara and others can only improve as they are still young and with the inclusion of these two (Mahela + Herath) we will be a front runners in the 2015 world cup with likes of SA, Pak and Aussies.

  • on December 21, 2013, 9:58 GMT

@yousaf : thats a funny logic really. Then it means ZIM is no 1 team. Because PAK won from SA , SA won from no 1 odi team india & ZIM won from PAK so that makes them no 1? lol. Its so funny when people come up with such comparisons really. isnt it?

  • bouncer709 on December 21, 2013, 9:48 GMT

Pakistan is playing with only 3 bowlers, Junaid, Ajmal and Afridi. Misbah should understand that Afridi and Junaid even if going expensive yet they can generate opportunities. and You can pressurize the opposition with taking wkts. Afridi was going expensive but when he was brought in 2nd spell he took wkt and in the same over again there was opportunity for another wkt, and again in last over he took another wkt. He is a kind of bowler, if allowed to 10 overs he can take wkt on his last ball of spell. while Sohail Tanvir, Hafeez, Bhatti they all bowled without creating any problem for the batsmen. They seems bowling economically, but let the opposition to build partnership quietly, that proves fatal at the end. Pakistan really need one more bowler. Also Anwar ali should be in for bhatti.

Some ifs and shoulds for pakistan since we have many from SL:

If there were no overthrows : SL 265 If the fielding was perfect : SL 240 If Irfan was playing : SL 225 If Gul was playing : SL 210

Pak wud have won by 75 runs should the above could be considered.

  • on December 21, 2013, 9:36 GMT

The problem with Pakistan is that they have too many captains on the field. Afridi is constantly badgering Misbha. So how can that poor man carry out his own plans? Pakistan lost only because they did not play as a team. The batters play for themselves and the fields are always trying to throw down the stumps even after the batsman has creased and there by giving away extra runs. Pakistan is so talented but got no team spirit. Sl on the other hand are playing better than they are capable due to good captaincy and management. I thought they got the batting or just right. Shame Perera did not fire yesterday, otherwise the game would have finished in 45 overs. I agree with those who suggest that Mali should be rested. He does not perform as well as he does for the Mumbai Indians. Why is that? Perhaps he is not inspired or not motivated enough when he plays for the country!

Well played Sri Lanka !! It was a well deserved win. Pakistan did good too. Anyway, Dilshan annoyed the heck outta me yesterday. First he ran Kusal out, then almost ran Sanga out and at the end, ran himself out. A match should have been won about 5-66 overs to spare went all the way to last over, all thanks to Dilshan blunder. I thought Shehzad played pretty slow too. Is he becoming Pak-Tendulkar or what ? coz everytime he scores a 100, the team loses. And congratz to King Sanga for his 12000 ODI runs. Its great to see Mathews is following the footsteps of "the Original Captain Cool " Arjuna Ranatunga. Mathews was cool as a cucumber. Calm and collective. All in all it was a pretty good game. Cheers !!

Though SL won the match, there are more weaknesses in the side. its pathetic to see ourdeath bowlling is becoming more vulnarable including Malinga. Thisara also didnt show up in bt/bowl in last 3 matches. His place is becoming more uncertain. when he does not perform well syddenly SL side look thin in thier batting. good to see that Prassanna & Senanayake is contributing some good knocks. Malinga's perfomance havent been upto his own standard specially after introduction of 2 new balls, his wicket taking ability gone down and become more expensive. So h has not solved his problems and continues in bad form. better he get rested and find someone new. eventhough he took wkts, still it would cost so many runs that allow opposition to get their target mean as a team the outcome is poor. and Thirimanna shud be droped and its better to send some good batsmen very lower down in case of situations like this where matches does not slip out of hands just becos of top order got out early.

  • on December 21, 2013, 8:18 GMT

Sohail Tanveer is not a bowler! He can not bowl or bat and is a liability for the team. Bilawal is again not up to any standard Both of theses should not be in the team

Srilanka is far better bowling side than pak.it is not coming together in this series.series against sa is a good example.@Fast track bully, one particullar good innings of india is good enough to make you comeback in this wonderfull site.only a medi team like ind needs tailenders to protect them from humiliation.

SL good win , both teams played well . but SL need more discipline in bowling department .

  • hamza893 on December 21, 2013, 8:03 GMT

I must say bad captaincy by Misbah, why o why he is not giving new ball to Junaid.Hafeez is no more a new ball bowler, secondly he has disturbed the bowling order big time,Afridi came usually in 14-16 overs but here Afridi came in 26.Misbah does not know how to use his main bowlers and then he goes with Sohail Tanvir, that guy must be out from the team permanently

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 21, 2013, 8:02 GMT

  • deshwani on December 21, 2013, 8:02 GMT

Tanvir and Bhatti are worst bowlers and not able to play ODI.. Tanvir is only t20 bowler and cannot bowl whole 10 overs... and Bhatti is batting allrounder instead of bowling as his batting is better than his bowling... so need to drop both of them and get call Anwar Ali and Rehman if wanna win...

  • on December 21, 2013, 7:59 GMT

warne shane@ spot on mate because every team in asia except india are minnows, and specialy one team who gets bowled out for 49, even mannage to lose from a position that team like kenya will be ashamed. the famous 19 run 6 wickets.

  • Fahad_Hussain on December 21, 2013, 7:43 GMT

It was poor captaincy from Misbah's end. First while batting he din't put the accelerator at the right time and we were short by 20 runs at least. Then it could be clearly seen that there were TOO MANY COOKS SPOILING THE BROTH in the field and influencing Misbah in decision making. He was not being able to martial the troops well & despite of his anger players were overthrowing and conceded many runs. Second, Giving Tanvir the ball again after he had already given 11 runs in 39th over was totaly absurd from him and had to pay the price when he conceded 19 runs with a six on free hit. He miscalculated the overs of his bowlers so he had to use JUNAID from the other end for 49th over and then giving Afridi last over when Hafeez could have been a better choice concluded his bad the day as the captain and ended up losing the match. SL on the other hand won because of their calmness and self belief. Angelo's inning was the lesson for all of them that they can win and the tail enders learned

If that so, then add Hong Kong & Malaysia to make it 8-nation Asia cup 2014. That would be fascinating to see for minnows competing with ex-test nations. AUS, Eng, India, SA, ZIm, NZL & WI are among the Elite group and they don't participate in for relegation plate trophy.

  • on December 21, 2013, 7:28 GMT

its a blessing guys. sohail tanvir will not be selected again. but choices are very few. only anwar ali is there so he will come in. the squad selection was very poor. our bolwers are not good with old ball except junaid and ajmal. look at no of yorkers SL bolwed in last 10 overs and how many pak bolwed?

  • on December 21, 2013, 7:23 GMT

people saying that score wasnt enough. score was ok. never been chased this much on this ground. avg was 211. people say pak was slow in the end and misbah was slow. last 10 overs they scored 93 guys. they were slow in the start. ahmed hafeez partnership was slower 1 . maqsood was slow today but i think still enough runs.

issue was bowling. in last 10 overs pak gave 87 runs. thats the difference. people mentioning why junaid was replaced. tanvir and afridi was expensive and bhatti not up to mark in last overs. so technically misbah has 2 bolwers junaid and ajmal and both did well. some1 mentioned that afridi should have bowled all 10 overs. he was going over 8 runs per over where others were less than 5 so better not bowl him. even after all this i think bolwers lost it after good score. turning points afridi going8 runs per over. hos normal is 4-5 rpo. tanvir is big culprit 2 overs for 30 runs bhatti last over 11 runs junaid's last 12 runs. 87 in last 9.4 overs is too poor.

  • on December 21, 2013, 7:11 GMT

During the winter season in Dubai, its madness to decide fielding when the toss was in the favour of Sri Lankans. It was a fortunate match win and not a hard working win. Why Mathew decided to field is a question. Luckily Thirimanne got injured, otherwise S/L would definitely have lost. Though Karunaratne is a test opener, the ultimate gratitude goes to him for carrying the match for the winning stage.

  • hadncs on December 21, 2013, 7:07 GMT

If Umar gul nad mohomad irfan in the pak team there would be big different results in previous matches. SLs point of view I think Malinga mus give some kind of a break since he fails in the entire season. and bring back some one like lakmal who may be little bit expensive but a wicket taker.

  • kasifdotinfo on December 21, 2013, 6:58 GMT

It really was a great performance by Sri Lanka. The rule changes might cheapen it slightly - with another fielder outside the circle, and with a single ball for both ends that would've allowed the likes of Junaid to get more pronounced and consistent reverse swing, the chase would probably not have been a success - but what adds to the impressiveness of it is that no contributing batsman got properly settled and went on to make a big score. Several played key roles under sustained pressure from a strong attack, doing just enough before passing the baton.

Sangakkara played a mediocre innings by his standards, scoring 58 before throwing his wicket away in what appeared to be a vain effort to dominate Ajmal, yet his was the largest component of a total of 287. If this isn't the biggest difference between team score and individual high score in a run chase (229), then it must be close to it.

  • Prabhash1985 on December 21, 2013, 6:54 GMT

I think there is plenty to learn from Sanga's father (there's an article in cricinfo). What you have achieved, and what you can achieve, are two different things. Sri Lanka must try to become perfect. We all know that nothing can be perfect. But, there were people like Bradmon, who were near perfect. All had criticism, including Bradmon. Our team should keep working harder on small things that bother too much. They want the coach to correct their mistakes. I don't know how, but Mathews should study how teams won different matches, and should come up with his own plans. Sri Lankans couldn't stop 250+ in both matches. It's not nice. Like Sanga works on his faults, whole team must try to become better as a unit. And please use Shaminda Eranga. He needs some experience. He can be the best weapon we have. But he lacks experience. But the guy is very smart, intelligent.

  • M.gundroo on December 21, 2013, 6:33 GMT

So far these pitches have turned out to be good batting tracks were even scores of above 300 are not safe . There is not a lot of help for fast bowlers and both teams can play spin better than sa or England, Pakistan's scoring is slow even on these tracks but understandable considering there recent poor batting form and they are playing for a place in the team. There is not. much choice here with limited bowling resources, yes you can play a war Ali but like Bhakti he won't make difference on these flat tracks .it may better to play Abdul rehman than sohail' Tanveer who should not have been in the team in the first place. I am surprised instead of old tested and tried Abdul rehman they did not give a chance to that young spinner ? Rizwan

  • Fast_Track_Bully on December 21, 2013, 6:30 GMT

At last SL fans got something to cheer!. After a series of defeats, they got one by luck. Look at the world's best bowlers figures - 78/1.lol. He is the most expensive bowler in the game! It is a pity that bowlers need to score runs for SL even if they have lot of legends in the team!

  • on December 21, 2013, 6:08 GMT

How can you blame Misbah for this loss. He bowled his wicket takers early to close the game but let down by afridi in the middle overs.Tanvir over for 19 sealed the game.

  • VKohlitheGreat on December 21, 2013, 5:56 GMT

So with the help of pakistan's fielding and a flurry of overthrows, SL take the match. Proper batsmen fail to strike at 100 in a match where they required to chase nearly 300 i.e. run a ball and as expected kula, gula, mula etc throwing their bats around.

  • on December 21, 2013, 5:55 GMT

i must admit that pakistan fast bowling is no way near world class, yes they are good but not best what their fan say.now they can say irfan, gul is not playing ,but every team has problem with injured bowlers, just look at aussies, saffars tf their 1 good bowler gets injured they replece with some good ones.

  • Mr.Blacksmith on December 21, 2013, 5:24 GMT

Real Culprits are Shahzad (for his slow batting till ends), Hafeez (for his selfish batting), Misbah (for tuk tuk and poor captaincy) and all of them the master of culprits Tanveer (for his worst bowling). Congratulations to Sri Lanka. Best of luck to both teams for remaining series.

  • KCMathews on December 21, 2013, 5:15 GMT

well done sri lanka...this SL team looks good for the next WC....bowling is a bit of worry though...we have two good spinning all rounders in seeku and sachi...seeku looks a pretty good batsman and should play ahead of herath in odi and t20 teams...its a big advantage for us when we have a players like seeku and sachi batting at no.9 & 10 and it proved in this match..

  • on December 21, 2013, 5:08 GMT

So SL again depending on their itsy bitsy sloggers to do the task for them. The so called legends cant score at run a ball in the subcontinent when they were chasing more than 300 in the previous ODI and near 300 in this ODI. I see Pak taking this series easily cuz tailenders throwing their bats can win u matches but series and tournaments that matter? no way..

  • LoveLanka on December 21, 2013, 5:08 GMT

Sanga's dismisal today was the same to the one that happened in Sharjah couple of years ago. SL were in a well set situation 150+ runs for couple of wickets and suddenly sanga got mad and got out.. last time the collapse was severe and though the tail add some runs the target was too much for them. He did the same mistake today and PAK almost did the same thing they did in Sharjah as Junaid ran through few wickets. but this time up to the 10th man everybody can bat well, Prasanna and Senanayake added that much needed backup against PAK. mut most importantly Mathew showed more maturity as a senior players and the captain which realy pleased all sri lankans. but i hope Sanga will take note of what he did in a situation where a one bad move is all a team like PAK need to make you bite the dust. wonderfull series so far and fasten your seats folks... MORE TO COME.. WELL PLAYED PAK & SL.

  • on December 21, 2013, 4:44 GMT

The fact SL chased without any dew advantage is commendable..will be a wonderful series between two entertaining teams

  • on December 21, 2013, 4:12 GMT

congrats SL for win. Looks like Pak batters are realizing & learning how to construct an inning. Bowling was poor today by Pak standards. Tanvir may not get place in Indian bowling lineup, do not know what Pak selectors see in him. But well, I reckon he is just stop gap arrangement, with Irfan due back from injury and Amir not too far from his ban period. I have always said if this batting unit can give some fighting score, they will win more than they lose. Reverse is true on our side of border, if our bowler start defending atleast 300, we can get batter (ODI series lose to SA notwithstanding, atleast now we know that it was due to non-familiarity with conditions and offcourse SA played better). Hope to have Ind-Pak series soon.

  • on December 21, 2013, 4:11 GMT

I don't knw why selectors took Sohail Tanveer... He never knows where to bowl... Giving them short balls and then getting the treatment.. He don't deserves to be kept in the team...!!!

  • on December 21, 2013, 4:01 GMT

Pakistan lost the match bcz of slow batting of Hafeez.shazad and misbah... bhatti and sohail are weak bowling links in Pakistani team.bhatti should improve his bowling.in place of Sohail Pakistan should give chance to Sadaf or Talha or umar gul as long irfan is injured .

  • Prabhash1985 on December 21, 2013, 3:54 GMT

And to add more, I always knew Junaid Khan is going to be the biggest threat for Sri Lanka. I really love the way he bowled. I remember how threatening he was, last time when Sri Lanka played against Pakistan. He simply dominates when he is in his aggressive mode. I see the likes of Wasim in him. But, Wasim was far far better. Junaid is very young, he has a great future in front of him. I wish him all the best. And wish all the best for both teams for the next match.

  • Prabhash1985 on December 21, 2013, 3:51 GMT

Sri Lankan team must realize their roles carefully. When we won the world cup in 1996, that team was playing almost without any big changes, and the batting order as far as I remember, was very fixed. But, yesterday (today for me), sending big hitters up the order was a good decision, but should have sent Dimuth early. Dimuth can play aggressively. The way he handled Aussie attack in one of the test matches was very impressive. He didn't give any room to dominate Johnson and co while rest of the batsmen had no answer to bounce. He can be a great batsman. I personally believe he deserves a permenant position in ODI squad. Not to degrade Thirimanna. I believe these two should be used time to time, say 4 matches, and another 4 for the other. Just like many contests between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it was very exciting to watch. Hope this series will be a draw :D

  • Nuwas on December 21, 2013, 3:47 GMT

Well Congratz to Srilankans on their victory & well played Pakistan. slow & watchful starts, consolidation at the middle overs & BANG at the end of the innings (specially in last 10 overs) : is the latest ODI template due to new rules related to fielding restrictions. That is inevitable unless the pitch is for bowlers in big time. So accept the fact folks, 70-100 in the last 10 overs is quite achievable & becoming a part of the game ;) Pakistan has the best spin attack atm in world cricket, that is well proven if they can use Umar Gul in place of Tanvir, with Junaid Khan they will get their former title "best bowling attack" back. Two pitches got so far offered really minimum to bowlers. Dubai pitch offered swing for pacers during the latter part of second innings & Junaid bowled well to make use of it. You gotta give credit to the bowlers of both teams for keeping scores among 280-320 which is a good effort considering pitch conditions. Good Luck both teams for next game:)

  • Prema1948 on December 21, 2013, 3:45 GMT

of scoring opportunities. After all Ajantha has always been asked to carry water to make way for henchmen since 2011 though he has performed brilliantly in the 2011 WC and has been a bowler of rare breed that has taken four, 6-wkt hauls in all forms of LO Internationals in his very short career. Just because he has failed once or twice on very slow tracks, it shouldn't be a case to ignore him and create opportunities for others. The J&Ps should respect him for what he has done both at Domestic and International levels, unlike some that have failed 10-15 times at a stretch during their International careers. Even if we lose few matches for the start, the positions of aging seniors have to be given to youngsters. There are more than enough youngsters to replace them though the J&Ps are very much ignorant about this very fact. The Country would gain nothing in playing them too long in these positions. (One may verify stats at Cricinfo)

  • on December 21, 2013, 3:34 GMT

I cannot understand why sohail tanveer keeps getting selected ahead of Anwar Ali who is a better bowler than tanveer let alone his batting , Anwar's batting is way better than even Umar Akmal

Also i donot understand why misbah donot open bowling with Junaid Khan , he always takes wickets in his opening spell Misbah has allowed srilankan opening pair to settle in both the games

The best thing Sri Lanka took away from this match is not the win but the knowledge that Dimuth Karunaratne seems to be better choice for the ODI team than Lahiru Thirimanne.

  • Prema1948 on December 21, 2013, 3:05 GMT

There is a big contrast of the publicity given to this great Game within the Country by the local media, when it compared to the other Test playing countries though, we have achieved great heights of International fame through this Game. The other very notable factor is the way they ignore performances of youngsters while giving overwhelming praise for seniors, with experience of 500-600 Internationals innings. If one had compared what Mathews & Chandimal have done so far, as youngsters there is nothing much to talk about performances of seniors when they were in that same age. As a fan it is very disturbing thing, to note that the J&Ps and the media have no concern of what other Test playing countries do in giving special place for their future players. It was nice to see the inclusion of Dimuth hoverver, there is no way one can drop players the calibre of Thirimane & Ajantha. What wrong has Thirimanne done, in the last game, in coming to bat after the seniors had wasted lots 2bCNTD

  • on December 21, 2013, 3:04 GMT

After so many years of Testing, Now Sri Lanka seems to have SETTLED ON the ideal ODI / T20 squad except Thirimanne. Alrounder should be played in place of Thirimanne as yesterday. Dimuth Karunaratne / Ramith Rambukwella are better players. Thirimanne only can stay on but cant handle run rate beyond 4. See his stats. He is only Good for tests. Also Thisara Perera has gone down recently. Senanayaka and Prasanna are real Gems, must be in the team.

Hopefully with this defeat Pak learn and drop Tanvir once and for ever. Its the first time I really feel that Pak lost just because of Misbahs' captaincy, he didnot utilize his wicket taking bowlers at crucial time plus selecting Tanvir is also a blunder that Misbah is continuously doing time and again.

Nice 2 see SL win @ last.it would be nice we could finish in 45 overs with batting line upto 10(other than mali all r batters) more credit goes to Mathews,Kule and Sachie. y'day i show one of the most sensible inning from Mathews. but it would be nice if he able to finish it. Sachie played very well under pressure without no panic at all. he has been great asset to SL side and future. Kula played well 4 his 32 and can't blame him get out because that time we desperately to need big blows. Chandi miss unfortunately miss his 50 again but his inning has great boost to SL win. finally 2 legend seniors showed some positive cricket with Strike rate of 80's. Dimuth who is more test like player played to his potential . only worrying factor is Thisara out of form. wish good luck both team 4 next match.

It was fortunate srilanka give pakistan two run outs it was the most pathetic bowling from Pakistan. Match should be finished by 40 over. Misbah was indecisive about right bowling combination tanveer with average above 35 is in his best choice. tanveer played one odi in SA and anwar ali played 3. if selection is based on adhoc basis for every series it will open up pandorabox and teams will never settle. I still believe Misbah is not a right captain for pakistan and Pakistan will remain 5/6 ranked team under his leadership worst for a pakistan captain

  • on December 21, 2013, 2:00 GMT

These mediocre evenly matched teams are providing more entertainment than the heavy weights which were one sided in odi's (SAF)and in Test's(India).

  • on December 21, 2013, 1:35 GMT

This was easily a 300+ pitch. Misbah should have played faster or should have sent Umer Akmal instead of himself. Hafeez scored 32 on 55 - this is hella slow on this pitch - he should have scored at least 45. Ahmed Shahzad should have gone hard after getting to the century specially when so many batsmen were still to come. These three batsmen could have added 30 more runs and Pakistan could have won the match.

You can't expect your bowling to fire on all pitches specially with mediocre bowlers like Bhatti and Tanvir. We need to find good fast bowlers to support Junaid and the spinners - Irfan solved that mystery for a bit but you can't reply on him as he has injury issues. We need Aamir back or get Sadaf Husain from domestic circuit.

It looks like Thisara is not in great form and it is time may be give a chance to another youngster like Ashan Priyanjan. He is a very good alrounder like Tisara. Ashan is a very good batsman in the middle, who can work the ball into the gaps or give it a real wacko if needed who also can ball seam medium fast. Very good fielder as well. Wish you all the best for tje series.

Misbah is good batsman but he is not good captain the way he is treating with junaid khan is very stupid. He is world class bowler but misbah is very biased with him and finally today he cost the match due to his selfish approach. Everybody knows hafeez and tanvir are not wicket taker bowlers but he always start with them knowing the fact srilanka has the batting upto no. 10 you cannot win the match with out taking their all the wickets ds'nt matter what the total you are defending and other thing today he brought shahid afridi very late into the attack. Misbah and hafeez always play from themselves it is very hard for them to digest if some one else give match winning performance

This was a good match between equals. This is going to be a good series. The pitches are not roads like in IN because it has something in it for the bowlers but today bowlers did not perform as well, especially PK bowlers. We have seen them choke opponents in a low scoring matches but SL has a good long batting lineup. Their tailenders are good with the bat. It needed most of them to overhaul the score. Goods team win by SL. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

  • Baundele on December 20, 2013, 23:19 GMT

Angelo Mathews as the man of the match is a horrible decision. He bowled 3 overs and scored less than a 50. Moreover, his innings was not an impact innings. If Kula and Karunaratne did not score quickly Sri Lanka were going to choke. Moreover, he could not finish the game, got out at a crucial time.

Wow !!! Pakistan could not defend 284... Either there was too much dew or the pitch was a batting paradise (That might the case as Pakistan Batting can never manage 285 in the first place).

  • on December 20, 2013, 22:40 GMT

What did you think of adridi's bowling today? I thought it costed the game for Pakistan.

  • imranmujtaba on December 20, 2013, 22:37 GMT

Well done SL! SL should have won first game as well. Young SL players are showing good attitude. Pak 20-30 short runs in both games - Misbah wasted too many balls in middle order, which put PAK back foot. Hafeez did same in previous game... Pak has to send Umar Akmal, Sohaib and Afridi before hafeez and in all cases before Misbah, so they are stroke player and they can utilise such a flat track whether neither fast nor spinner can not do much. Misbah captaincy and bowling changes is very poor - don't how to utilise bowling resource - why doesn't he give new ball to fast bowlers? Hafeez has not done anything agianst SL

  • roook on December 20, 2013, 22:32 GMT

Number 10 having a average of 21 that a heck of a batting talent srilankan got. Irfan is badly missed in this series and please used him carefully. Auwar Ali should be playing the next match and where are the swinging yorkers like malinga. mathew ended the career of sami and now i thing its time for tanveer.

  • Sirio on December 20, 2013, 22:31 GMT

Its not a matter of team selection for the Pakistanis. Anybody can perform on his day including Tanvir, so no point blaming him. Maybe if they would have played another bowler or another spinner, but who knows? when a team is on the role, like SL was today, then nothing can stop.

  • chitrali_zaheeruddin on December 20, 2013, 22:25 GMT

Shehzad and Hafeez destroyed the match, The play for their self only, See How Shehzad playing after getting so many chance he is looking to have a century for his self and also Hafeez is not suitable for ODI.

  • jerryman on December 20, 2013, 21:34 GMT

malinga and tissara perera are leaking runs .. one of them have to be rested for the next game and maybe mendis can be bought in as a 3rd spinner . I thought prsanana and seanayake bowled very economically

  • Malik2013 on December 20, 2013, 21:20 GMT

  • pak_fan11 on December 20, 2013, 21:17 GMT

Sri lanka played well, pakistan improving in the batting but they are gone soft in the bowling. Pakistan was not able to take advantage of such a good start they could have gone on to make another 300+, with so many batsman to come pakistan players did not started firing at right time and they were clearly late in big hitting. there was no pressure on misbah today and still he could not get his stike rate above 100, afridi did his job in what ever time he got with the bat. Umar should have been come to bat at the place of misbah. Mathews 47 off 44 was the best inning in the match.

once again poor captaincy by misbah 1. did not utilize 2 overs of hafeez and 4 overs of Afridi (Afridi was attacked by left handers in first three overs and is is a wicket taker) 2. did not bat well in the end overs as pakistan was easily 15 runs short of par score, 3. No place for sohail Tanveer saab and should be replaced by anwar ali. 4. Logic of opening with Hafeez is not understood, why waste new ball. 5. select a wicket taking bowler like Talah

  • on December 20, 2013, 20:51 GMT

an awkward prize giving after all!! SL have won the match by better perfomance but PAK were awarded all the prizes exept a single award the man of the match! that's frustrating every one forgot Kulasekara's knock at least he would been awarded the circle players prize or golden players prize for his all rounder role

  • yorkslanka on December 20, 2013, 20:44 GMT

well done to Sri Lanka to getting over the line..it was a close run thing but that shows the quality of both teams. Well done to Pakistan also, another centurion in your ranks and your fast bowling especially Junaid was really good today.. I have to commend Mathews for (almost) finishing the match for us today. He kept his nerve right until the end and got us the win with Kula producing his usual superb efforts with the bat and ball... bring on the haters as i am sure there will be plenty of negative comments from the usual suspects..

  • Ramsmiley on December 20, 2013, 20:42 GMT

This is an amazing chase because SL gifted wickets of two of their best batsmen at the beginning.SL would have won more comfortably if not for those two wickets. Also Kulasekara , Prasanna and Sanga played irresponsible shots which made it harder. But still they won and chased a record total and its not a good sign for Pakistan. Also glad to see CHandimal the most talented young batsman in SL coming back to form..He should bat at no 3 or 4 and Mahela should bat at 5/6 when he come back.

  • jerryman on December 20, 2013, 20:35 GMT

What a match .. SL certainly like to take things down to the wire . 2 unnecessary run outs , a few partnerships and chasing the highest score in Dubai. a cool and calm innings by Matthew who almost threw it away in the 49th over. however Senanayake managed to get them home in a squeaker. Initially Pakistan sored merrily and they had a centurion as well .. and a cameo from Afridi. malinga was expensive again and may need to be rested for a game. Sl batting right down to # 10 held their nerves .. Think this game was not for the faint of heart. Sl must learn to take singles early on and then play calmly.. But well played Pakistan .. Good luck in the remaining games and am sure there will be more games right down to the wire ..

  • t20cric on December 20, 2013, 20:33 GMT

I can't believe I'm saying this but Pakistan's bowling has to improve. The spinners are alright but pacers aren't also Misbah needs to know when & when not to use bowlers. Junaid should open bowling cuz he can get early wickets. Pakistan should try Anwar Ali instead of Bilawal or Tanvir. They can also try Harris Sohail in the team.

    My XI: 1.Sharjeel Khan, 2.Ahmed Shehzad, 3.Sohaib Maqsood, 4.Mohammad Hafeez/Haris Sohail, 5.Umar Akmal, 6.Misbah-ul-haq, 7.Shahid Afridi, 8.Bilawal Bhatti, 9.Anwar Ali, 10.Saeed Ajmal, 11.Junaid Khan

If Anwar doesn't bowl to well then we have a problem. We have 3 bowlers (Tanvir, Bhatti, Anwar) who are in their cuz they can bat too but thy aren't the best of bowlers. Junaid bowled great today (except for his last over) & showed signs of his old self in India. Haris can be given a chance at no.4 to maintain right-left combo but Hafeez is still useful for his spin bowling. Misbah should move down the order cuz its true, when he bats we don't win.

  • on December 20, 2013, 20:24 GMT

it's good match I think Misba give afridi to bowl early

  • on December 20, 2013, 20:22 GMT

misbah dont know how use bowlers in right time to control the run chase,, also very poor captancy for setup fielding.. see he is using afridi to bowl after 20 overs .in this time batsman thinking about their partnership and looking for runs,,sot hat time afridi will expensive. whenever wicketspell between 15-17 overs afridi shoud bowl here for attack..

  • shahnbej on December 20, 2013, 20:17 GMT

I think Usman Khan should be in instead of Tanveer or any other young fast bowler but it is just my opinion and I am 100% sure that MISBAH doesn't like it.

  • abdubaba on December 20, 2013, 20:15 GMT

Sohail Tanvir is a third class, absolutely pathetic excuse for a bowler and should be permanently dropped from the side, especially when you have bowlers like Mohammad Talha and Anwari Ali and all rounders like Hammad Azam sitting on the sidelines. He single handedly cost us the match. Ramiz Raja said it right for a change "it was a match losing effort from Sohail Tanvir". Also, Misbah's management of the bowlers was mediocre after the 35th over. I mean, in the end he was a in a bind and because of it, he had to move Junaid Khan from the end he was bowling and getting wickets from to the other end just to get the order right and in the process Junaid had to use a different ball and that ball did not swing a whit! Last but not least, the fielding is painful to watch. What are we? Panicking school boys? I mean, c'mon guys you're playing on an international level, show some nerve!

  • on December 20, 2013, 20:14 GMT

Congratulations to Sri Lanka for winning this nail biter. Innings by Ahmed shahzad was a cracker followed by a good knock from Misbah. The total was good and defendable. Congratulations to Misbah for being the highest run scorer in ODI in 2013.Congratulations to Sangakara for completing 12000 runs in ODIs. Sanga,Mahela, Dilshan and misbah defy age with ease and prove that age is just a number. Today . Kaushal looked good but was runout to an outstanding effort by Bilawal.Great partnership by Sanga kara and Chandimal. Laid the base for a successful chase. Innings by Kulasekara was a treat to watch. Angelo was captain cool today. His innings of a run a ball took SL through. The catch of Suhaib Maqsood by Chandimal and run out of Kaushal by Bilawal was fielding moment of the day. Junaids bowling was great. However why Misbah persisted with Tanvir is questionable. Sohail should be dropped and Anwar Ali should be included.Good Luck to both teams for the 3rd ODI.

It's Pakistan team managements over confidence that they didn't select a 16th player. Now they can't replace tanvir and Bhatti with a genuine pace bowler. Had they taken Gul or Talha. This problem could have been averted.

  • on December 20, 2013, 20:05 GMT

That is def 300+ wicket. Pak were very slow in the start, which cost them few extra runs. Srilanka were lucky and unlucky with the running.

overall a good fighting cricket from both sides and clearly show srilanka the better team.

Srilanka has a deep batting line up so pak batsman have to score few extra runs

  • ozone8237 on December 20, 2013, 20:04 GMT

Right from the start I had started liking the series between these two Competitive World class friendly foes. What a game today. The Pak team that seemed to be weaker and fragile in their batting department for almost over 3-4 years and all of a sudden they seemed to have gained their momentum back in their batting line up with Hafeez getting his form back and the inclusion of the younsters like Sharjeel and Maqsood. Now it seems like their bowling is the department that needs some fine tuning. Its going to be a nail biting contest throughout the whole series Lets see who shows a better display of performance in every department and get an edge overtheir opponents. May the best team WIN .. Good Luck

  • kc69 on December 20, 2013, 19:59 GMT

Frankly speaking Sri Lanka played smart cricket to win this match and i believe that Senanayake is a lot better batsman and needs to be promoted up the order, however is it only me or anyone else noticed that the major problem with Pakistan is their captain is too soft and everyone like Afridi,Hafeez,Umar Akmal etc try it impose their own opinions and suggestions on Misbah whether it is Review or who has to bowl etc.A captain needs to stay firm and lead the side from the front no matter how good batsmen he is.

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:58 GMT

its a captain fault, and he is responsible for the lost, as he had seen in the last match how suhail tenveer was bowling, he has always been pathetic, and annoying action of bowling.. he was never a great bowler but kept on getting more and more chance..it was so stupid to go with same attack as the last match.. they should have learnt that sri lanka almost chased 322 in sharjah.. this is a good lesson for misbah.. even anwar ali is way better than kukri (suhail tanver) anyway congrates sri lanka

  • roook on December 20, 2013, 19:53 GMT

It is definitely Pakistan poor planning knowing even srilankan number 10 averages 21 go with the same bowling attacked which nearly failed. Srilankan were bowler down and batsman down and still winning the match mathew should be man of the match. It is time to recall umar gul bhatti is to predictable with short balls and useless in the death overs.

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:53 GMT

It was so nice of Sohail Tanvir to lose Pakistan another game and it was so nice captaincy by Misbah to give him death overs inspite of his poor recent records keeping Hafeez's overs in tact. Pakistan lost the game due to Misbah's underestimation on Kulasekara and the tailenders of Srilanka. He will still persist with Tanvir Im sure as Pakistan used to do with Mohammad Sami back in those years. RIP Pakistan.

  • Haz95 on December 20, 2013, 19:52 GMT

Well done Sri Lanka, from a disappointed Pakistani fan. Now, here are the only real concerns that are taken place:- BOWLING 1.Sohail tanvir is not an all rounder or specialist bowler, He's a nice fellow but just isn't good enough for the big stage, he must stick to T20s only. 2.Bhatti and Junaid should have opened, both were brutal when the ball was fairly new, imagine when it was the new ball. 3.Its should have been Afridi bowling the 49th and Junaid bowling the 50th as Afridi would have taken the wicket whilst Junaid fired yorkers, Again poor bowling captaincy from some1 who's captaincy I'm liking Bring in Anwar Ali, open the bowling with two fast bowlers or at least Junaid with Hafeez

That's pretty much it. Never thought I'd criticise the bowling, its always Batting for Pak.

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:51 GMT

God knows what is going to take for PCB to change the captain. Misbah is the worst thing that has happened to Pakistan Cricket. This guy has destroyed the team, he is not a leader and motivator .He brings out the worst in people , making them scared and defensive. Cant understand why sticking with trired and tested Sohail Tanvir. Anwar Ali is sitting after doing well south africa. Dont know what has happened to Bhatti, he was bowling so well , south africa. Yorkers after yorkers and now someone in this flop management and captain has played with his head, that he is bowlong short after short. Misbah please i request you to step down for the betterment of the team. Afridi is a far better choice , he is agressive and knows how to bring out the best in the lads. He showed that in the 2011 world cup.

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:50 GMT

sohail tanveer is not a odi player he is only good for t20s they should hav select another fast bowler frm domestic rather then selecting him very bad team selection

Sri Lanka have got good batting line up till the end so score should have been 300 plus considering the fact that we had six wickets in hand . Bad luck to Pakistan. Congrats to Sri Lanka. It seem its all competition of batting as bowling is not good from either side

  • Rajesh_india_1990 on December 20, 2013, 19:49 GMT

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:49 GMT

Well played. Little bit poor bowling by pakistan in the end. Sohail gave away 30 runs in 2 overs. Even junaid gave 12 runs in 49th. But it was that stage of innings when anything could have happened. Bhatti gave 10 in his last over. and Afridi Going for 8 runs per over today. bowling in later overs has not been good so far in thins tour by paksitan including t20s. 87 runs in last 9.4 overs.

SL has good and long batting line up. almost 10 can hit good. so have to consider that.

Over all good performance by both teams. Hoping to see more crackers in next few games.

  • LankaGod on December 20, 2013, 19:48 GMT

Can't believe we huffed and puffed to win the game. With our batting and Pakistani bowling, we should have been over the line in less than 45 overs. Sorry but the current Pakistani bowlers are no Akram and Waqar, they are pretty ordinarily probably a tad better than India's. Anyways, a win is a win, good job boys and let's wrap this up in the next game.

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:47 GMT

Iceman Senanayake.......just the guy SL needed in the tail. Can bowl, can bat most of all has a coooool head to finish the game!!!!!!

  • Criktic on December 20, 2013, 19:45 GMT

Well done SL, you guys played well and deserved the victory : )

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:36 GMT

good game. well played both team. another close game.Pak batted well and got good score. Ahmed played well for 100. Couldnt accelerate as much as he would have liked. Hafeez-ahmed partnership was on slower side but played well. aqsood didnt make his start count, too may high shots. Afridi with another cameo. Consistent on this tour. Misbah with another 50. Score was 2nd highest and never been chased more than 275 on this ground.

Bowlers did well . Junaid was brilliant. Ajmal/Hafeez economical.

Afridi was expensive today. Sohail bowled well early on but in 2 overs gave away 30 runs. that was the difference for pakistan. And SL's batting goes till no 10.

SL has deep batting and mathews played sensible. Kula can bat and that means Malinga is no 11. SL bowled well in beginning and also lot of yorkers in the end. Batted with good plan and kept themselves in the game till end. too many close games by Pakistan in last few weeks. Well Played.

hope to see same fight in next 3 games.

  • roook on December 20, 2013, 19:16 GMT

Irfan should be replaced by some specialist bowler not with another allrounder. 4 allrounders drop tanveer he is not a death bowler. Srilankan are naturally good players of spin and this srilankan team have depth in there batting. It was a wrong decision to go with same bowling attack it is obvious we are lacking a wicket taker.

  • Solid_Snake on December 20, 2013, 19:16 GMT

Junaid Khan..You beauty...What a delivery to Parierra.. Amazing bowler he is..What a talent.Yet he is treated so badly..In and out of the team.Bowler like that would easily make his way in any team of the world..

  • roook on December 20, 2013, 19:01 GMT

With a fight put up by the srilankan team 285 is a nothing score. Sohail Tanvir please keep him away from ODI team umar gul is far better than him

  • on December 20, 2013, 19:01 GMT

Afridi is expensive today. going over 8 runs per over. and Sohail in last 2 overs went for 30 runs. this will be the difference in game.

  • on December 20, 2013, 18:41 GMT

Plz stop criticising Misbah , He knows when to use , how to use his bowlers? It's easy to suggest things when you are watching on TV, Those who are say Shehzad was aggressive ( Only in BBL ) , plz check his List A stats and ODI stats, He was never aggressive , Hafeez playing for his spot , His career stats shows his strike rate is in 70's as well. Junaid is very good with old Ball, he can reverse swing the ball. That's why Misbah using him very late. It's good move, plz understand the game 1st then make comments. Cricinfo plz publish my comment. Good Luck Pakistan

  • shahnbej on December 20, 2013, 18:33 GMT

Junaid Khan is awesome. Great bowling by hin.

  • on December 20, 2013, 18:29 GMT

284 is the 2nd highest score on this ground.

Average 1st innings score is 225 Average 2nd innings score is 211 Highest Score Chased is 275 Lowest Score Defended is 209

Ahmed is always a slow starter. he always takes time. Good thing is that he is catching up regularly now. Whereas earlier he use to give away his starts. His list A SR is 75. If we are judging him by t20 or end result of an odi then its our error. Though partnership between hafeez-ahmed was a slower one. But SL did bowl well in beginning. Have to give credit to them.

  • Zahidsaltin on December 20, 2013, 18:07 GMT

It is a 350 wicket. Pakistani upper order batsmen are very conservative and kill the coring rate by their kind of play. Even Shehzad who used to play with good strike rate is much much slower then one would expect. And Hafeez and Misbah both are the breaks which get applied to any acceleration if any.

  • on December 20, 2013, 16:35 GMT

I think, Misbah don't want to make the place for junaid khan permanently in odi team. he want irfan back in his team. he also dont want to skip sohail in the team.

  • Zahidsaltin on December 20, 2013, 16:21 GMT

With the Pakistani fast bowling quality, it's Sirilanka's match. Sohail Tanveer will again bowl short and wide and get hammered, just wait and look. Pakistan top order is too slow in first 20 overs. Hafeez is worst tuk tuk then the famous tuk tuk himself.

  • 3ddy on December 20, 2013, 16:17 GMT

once again , what the hell is captain misbah doing with new ball? why on earth giving it to most useless bowlers in team like sohail and hafeez? not junaid? pathetic again

  • on December 20, 2013, 16:05 GMT

What transpired to make Hafeez and Tanvir open the bowling?!

  • Haz95 on December 20, 2013, 15:49 GMT

Pakistan is toying with the potential worldclass bowler Junaid Khan, simply deciding to open the bowling with Tanvir is absurd. 36% of Junaids international wickets have come in first 10 overs, wow if only Irfan didn't get injured because Tanvir is woeful in ODi even tho he's not too bad in T20s. Misbah needs to bring Junaid in, hell open with junaid and bhatti. Junaid isn't a T20 bowler yet they persist with him in that format and when he destroys in both tests and odi then pak still toys...jeez

  • on December 20, 2013, 15:38 GMT

    Well Played Shahzad

  • Haz95 on December 20, 2013, 15:37 GMT

Ahmed Shehzad proved why slow starts are brilliant. As of late, Pakistan has been having slow starts and aren't even saving wickets but Ahmed Shehzad showed you guys what keeping your wicket does, If Misbah did that people will all go crazy. Nevertheless, Good Batting display once more but I fear Sri Lanka will chase this due to our surprisingly weak bowling(pace anyway)...Please give Junaid the newball and well they've chosen tanvir so what can I say....Gawd no its hafeez opening again!

  • momer79 on December 20, 2013, 15:36 GMT

I doubt SL will chase this score. Matthew and Parera won't bat so all pressure on other players to score (good test for young players) .

  • on December 20, 2013, 15:34 GMT

Another Good inning by LALA!! if he keeps using his brain like this way, will soon become "Brain Lala" :)

  • Sports4Youth on December 20, 2013, 15:32 GMT

JUNAID Khan should be opening the bowling for Pakistan. Because with the field restrictions on, the fielders are in catching positions, including slips. That is when he is more likely to pick up wickets.

  • CricIndia208 on December 20, 2013, 15:18 GMT

Sri Lankan bowling is woeful, their batting is no better.

  • shahnbej on December 20, 2013, 15:15 GMT

We are going to lose this match because Misbah scored fifty. And he will blame bowlers. Let see .....

  • Solid_Snake on December 20, 2013, 15:15 GMT

Not enough Runs..Pak should have gone for 300+ Pakistan can still win today.Only we have to stop Tanvir from Bowling..Lol

  • on December 20, 2013, 15:13 GMT

284 is 2nd highest score on this ground.

Different pitch than previous. So far no dew and if there is no dew, Pak has got more chances.

well played by Pakistan. 92 off last 10overs.

Sharjeel got out early but a good ton by Ahmed. He is always a slow starter but this time got a ton at a decent rate. Hafeez got taste of his own medicine, Most of time he get his partner run out but not today. Hafeez-ahmed partnership was a bit slow but played well. Maqsood failed to make his start count. I think he plays too many shots in air.

Well played by Misbah for yet another 50 at good rate. Highest scorer this year and can break most runs by captain in a year record.

Another cameo by afridi. 4 in 4 . Never seen such consistency from him for ages. well played.

SL bowled well with new ball. Especially Kula. SL should have played him in 1st. The no of yorkers in last 10 overs was amazing. With dew a factor and depth in their batting SL will fancy their chances. Looking forward to good chase.

  • on December 20, 2013, 15:07 GMT

What an Innings by ahmed shahzad and in the end misbah and afridi. Well Played Boys.

  • on December 20, 2013, 15:01 GMT

14th fifty in the clndr yr breaking previous record of tendulkar and gary kirsten and also stage set for pakistan defeat as misbah scored 50

  • on December 20, 2013, 14:54 GMT

Misba up to 50 sl should win today .

  • on December 20, 2013, 14:52 GMT

impressed by misbah. he is not tuk tuk today

  • Sports4Youth on December 20, 2013, 14:24 GMT

  • yorkslanka on December 20, 2013, 14:01 GMT

Dimuth is a better choice than thirrimanne. Would have liked to see tharanga in that spot tbh.good luck SL

  • on December 20, 2013, 13:37 GMT

It gonna be a record from misbah today

  • on December 20, 2013, 13:36 GMT

well hafeez tastes his own medicine this time and got run out.

sharjeel got a tight call but umpire got it right. was a difficult 1 but he got it.

for ahmed people need to understand that most of times ahmed is slow starter. you check his 50s or 100s. his 1st 20-25 runs always takes lot of balls and catch up later on. good thing is that he is catching up today.

maqsood got start but failed to capitalize. this is different pitch but dew will be a factor.

  • Ayziii on December 20, 2013, 13:11 GMT

Hafeez got run out . lol ..... Same Story all the time :)

  • romirom on December 20, 2013, 12:59 GMT

what the hafez and sehzad doing. 18 over wit jst 3 boundaries.

  • on December 20, 2013, 12:41 GMT

is it a test match or one day? srilanka got strong baating lineup. pakistan will end up losing game if this these just keep saving their wicket.

  • on December 20, 2013, 11:55 GMT

technically sharjeel was not out but by the books he was out. if you see the ball had no deflection after kissing the pads and the bat was in the line of the ball. he was unlucky.

SL started battle hear, just started.

  • on December 20, 2013, 11:43 GMT
