Umar Gul, the Pakistan fast bowler, will return to international cricket following a nine-month injury layoff, after the selectors included him in the squad for the remainder of the ODI series against Sri Lanka in the UAE. He will join the squad on Sunday, ahead of the third of five matches.

"The national selection committee in consultation with the tour selection committee has decided to send Umar Gul to UAE as part of national ODI squad," the PCB said. "He will join the Pakistan team on December 22."

The decision to pick Gul was made after Pakistan lost the second ODI in Dubai by six wickets despite posting 284, due to sloppy bowling in the death overs. Following the defeat, which left the series 1-1, Pakistan's captain Misbah-ul-Haq immediately expressed concern about the lack of experience among his bowlers.

Gul sustained a knee injury in March during the second ODI against South Africa in Centurion, and missed five series since, including the Champions Trophy. Following the injury, he travelled to Australia for surgery and after six weeks of rest, began his rehabilitation. He eased himself back into competitive cricket by featuring in List A matches in October and went on to play the Department Twenty20 Cup for Habib Bank, but his form remained unimpressive.

Gul was to make a return against South Africa in October after regaining full fitness, but lacked match practice and continued his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. He subsequently failed a fitness Test before the announcement of the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, and was asked to continue playing domestic cricket to regain his rhythm and form. He did that by taking 11 wickets against Port Qasim Authority in the President's Trophy.

gul has already shown his quality by taking 2 quick wickets and that led pakistan team to a big win...i hope he will perform well in future matches but as shoib akhter said he just came back frm an injury so he should be given little breaks...

Umar Gul nais gems T20 which harm his bowling

Posted by Crick_Chater on (December 22, 2013, 14:52 GMT)

Why Bilawal is always preferred over Anwar Ali. This gem should have been picked when he performed in under 19 world cup against India, same team which had the likes of Rohit Sharmas.

It is surprising we gave chance to Mohammed Aamir who was only 17 and yet no one realized Anwar Ali potential. This is how things happen in Pakistan.

." I'm quite a fan of Junaid's yorkers too."Want to see Gul yorkers back in action.. Gul vs Malinga today..

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 10:42 GMT)

i think so he will bring change again in bowling attack and will be helpful for Pakistan team .

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 10:41 GMT)

Batting would be the main key to win the match

Posted by wapuser on (December 22, 2013, 10:30 GMT)

I think gul should replace tanvir and bhatti should start with the new ball. In previous match bhatti bowled well. Although he didn't got any wicket but his line and speed was well.

Posted by K_Jan on (December 22, 2013, 10:23 GMT)

When Gul came on international stage he was a good swing bowler but he concentrate more on T20 which harm his bowling he dosn't remain a swing bowler, thats why his tests & odis stats not that good compare to T20.Pcb should give chances to young bowlers with good first class averages.Gul will be my first choice only for T20.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 10:22 GMT)

Nothing will be change. Nothing can do to this dude gul. Damn bowler. Lions will punish him to never come again. Specially from kusal. hikzzzzzzzz

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 10:10 GMT)

Well one thing ti watch out for is umer gul's rustiness when making a comeback after a long layoff such as this like his previous returns after an injury. You might find him all over the place in this all important 3rd tie of the series.

Posted by Mattoo66 on (December 22, 2013, 9:48 GMT)

i think its a good decision.pakistan desperately needed an experienced bowler to contain sri lanka up front and in the back end.Gul is a tried and tested character.im sure he will deliver.

good decision.gul's back.bhatti needs good coaching like waqar to learn how to bowl under presure

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 9:29 GMT)

he's yorker specialist. his reverse swinging yorkers will make difference. .!

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 9:17 GMT)

I would say its a gud decision and it will now be a competitive in the bowlers to perform well to keep the place in the side...tanvir shud be replaced...and the attack will be penetrable... Gudluck Team green

good decision by pcb to bring gul back.....i think umar gul is the best available option for pak as irfan is not fit and tanvir and bhatti noy causing any troubles to sril lankan batsman.....hope he will prove his worth and show his haters y is he been selected.....gud luck umar gul and both teams.....may the better team win

Posted by sufyankhan25 on (December 22, 2013, 8:52 GMT)

Good decision, keeping in mind Pakistan almost lost 1st ODI and lost 2nd due to bad bowling performance. its time to bring back Gul Bravo !!

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 8:47 GMT)

Anwar Ali, Bhatti, Sharjeel, Sohaib Maqsood, and Haris Sohail must be give chance regularly to build their confidence. And Sohail Tanveer, Umar Ameen should be given Red Card for ever. Junaid Khan iz a big thing in future. Umar Gul is ok sometimes but new pacers need to be polished. Sharjeel and Sohaib is the best discovery of 2013.

Posted by wapuser on (December 22, 2013, 8:47 GMT)

Sohail tanveer shud be drop and gul is the perfect replacement

Posted by Bilai on (December 22, 2013, 8:46 GMT)

Pakistan didn't lose the 2nd ODI by six wickets as the report says. Pak lost by two wickets..

Posted by Tbilisi on (December 22, 2013, 8:45 GMT)

Now a days of international cricket it must be one experienced bowler or batsman in the team. gull is very well known player in international cricket. as per my opinion he should be in the team and as well as his past record, he is wicket taking bowler & most ideal for T20 cricket (reverse swing). he will make difference for sure. Some times he is expensive but he takes key wickets which is most important .

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 8:45 GMT)

Good Umar Gul .

Posted by Cric_bhai on (December 22, 2013, 8:43 GMT)

Welcome back GULL-DOZER!! We missed your death bowling soooo much :').

Posted by wapuser on (December 22, 2013, 8:39 GMT)

If pakistan had one fast bowler like umer gul in 2nd ODI, they would have won match easily. Best of luck to Umer gul for this series. We want you fit and in form for coming T20 world cup.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 8:36 GMT)

Its is been a great decision by pcb as from here on words v been calculating our best team to take part in the next world cup in bangladesh

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 8:16 GMT)

If he replace Bhatti, What will it does to the confidence of Bhatti? I don't remember when Gul bowled well in one dayers of late. It is like picking someone and hoping for the best. It will put both Gul And Bhatti career on the brink.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 8:08 GMT)

I don't think that would make any difference.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 7:43 GMT)

I m sure gul and junid will do a great job

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 7:32 GMT)

Pakistan can bring even Wasim Akram back to the side to win balance three matches. Thay have scored high because they have hard hitters and sri lankan poor fast bowling attack which helped them by the new rule of only four players outside the 30 yd circle.Sri Lanka also should bring hard hitters like Thisara, Prasanna, Sachithra and Nuwan to retaliate Pakistan attack.

Posted by st_aubrun on (December 22, 2013, 7:23 GMT)

11 wickets against PQA in domestic means nothing except that knee works. It will take him the rest of the SL series before can raise his game and rhythm again to an international level.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 7:23 GMT)

its seems that pakistan bowling attack is strong now .good decision by pcb

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 7:16 GMT)

Bad decision!!! Lost one match and straight away you decided to go back to old guns.. Negative and intermediated approach...Dear PCB go for the future, don't live in the PAST...

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 7:05 GMT)

its a great decision from the pcb it will make a big difference in the pak team which will help them to win

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 6:38 GMT)

Good Decision.. PCT was desperately in need of him after seeing performance of bowlers in death overs..

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 6:27 GMT)

Gull's reutrn is good news for Pakistan which is clearly lacking experienced bowler in death overs . This is the time to give rest to Tanvir, Bhatti also had few chances now Anwar Ali should be given a chance. In the meantime they should be persistent with Junaid Khan.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 6:25 GMT)

Great news, Guldozer will balance Pakistan's bowling attack. He should replace Tanveer and Anwer Ali should replace bhatti. I wanted to see Junaid with Gul after that #AneyDo encounter in India.

Posted by wapuser on (December 22, 2013, 6:08 GMT)

Wish you all the best Umar Gul we want to see in full rythem.. best of luck

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 5:38 GMT)

Gul welcome back.He is the most senior among all the bowling attack and I think pakistan now can defend total around 250 easily .I am really waiting for gul's yorker ....

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 4:45 GMT)

Good decision by selection committee, as the death bowling is very weak in the absence of irfan. Umar guls return will boost bowling. ....thank u

welcome back GUL after your injury. Gul will replace Tanveer and anwar ali can replace bhatti.

bhatt need experience and we didn't see that bowling which he showed in first ODI against south africa.

give a chance UMER Akmal at number 4 that he can prove him self if he is not sincere with his talent kick him back to NCA and give bring young talented wk batsmen Rizwan is the best option after this series..

BEST OF LUCK GREEN.

@ Abdul Subhan Sheikh. What is Lankans own medicine? Bringing Gul in will help. But its not the medicine required to cure Pak's problems.

Posted by JohnSnider on (December 22, 2013, 4:17 GMT)

PCB is now very active and makes best decisions . Soon Pakistan would become a super power in Cricket.Talented Youngster should be picket early age and sent to camps with all paid expenses and continued education.

Under 14 to 19 is the time to look for talent, sponsor should be found and put on low fruit and veggie carbohydrates . Along with Whey proteins within an hour of heavy work out, use pure Coconut oil cooked food and lots lean meat hormone free Goat meat, is for perfect strength.

No sweets , soda or anything contains sugar unless it is pure honey. This is the the secret and secret is out for the world.

Malinga u need to back to track......we need nothing.....rest of members doing well

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 3:57 GMT)

gul can only take wickets when batsmen are throwing their bats violently at every ball... he is a good choice for t20 but he has Proven useless for any other format for almost eternity.. we need to inject pace in the bowling I still wonder why muhammad talha has never been given a proper chance to prove his metal... I miss the times when we had 150 plus bowlers in our team and on our bench

Posted by greenluv on (December 22, 2013, 3:51 GMT)

i am a big fan of his bowling but this is just not right to bring him back in ODI series to win the series he will be good but keep him for t20 only please. You need to keep on giving chances to new talent.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 3:44 GMT)

I hope he is still can bowl those Yorker overs. Best available choice.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 3:15 GMT)

good have umar gul but also pakistan team need good wicketkeeper .one drop catch , stumps or runout mis by wicket keeper change the while result of winning into losing match

Posted by Desihungama on (December 22, 2013, 3:13 GMT)

With Gul in the team, Misbah will surely give new ball to Junaid who was being under utilized while coming to bowl late because of reverse swing. Gul is more than capable to handle if and when ball reverses. In fact that is probably only armor he's got.

Posted by Saif-Ali on (December 22, 2013, 3:08 GMT)

That is the gud sign of pcb i request to pcb that plz do farewel to sohail tanvir he is expensive & doesn't take wickets im a local player but as he play i think im better bowler than him & better batsman as well as he is totaly useless

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 2:45 GMT)

Umar gul is a great bowler. he aint an old horse nor useless, although irfan has done much better and is top priority when available. There arnt much bowlers in the world these days bowling perfect 6 yorkers in death. Umar gul can be a perfect choice for current time still its very difficult for him returning from injury and taking all pressure. Good luck to Umar Gul. Hope captain utilizes his bowlers properly which was also a factor in losing 2nd match.

The availability of good pacers in Pakistan is amazing. No other country, with the exception of Australia, has this luxury. Great news for Pakistan.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 2:05 GMT)

My god the pakistaniis take winning so seriously. They should be building their. Team up with young talents instead they loose one match and they are rattled! They have gone and recalled another has been who has not played any cricket for Seven months. Good luck to them and hope common sense will prevail.

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 1:56 GMT)

he will make Pak attack strong conditionaly 100 percent fit. wish him all the best.

Posted by sohailmalik1985 on (December 22, 2013, 1:09 GMT)

Yeaaaaah thats very good he is outstanding bowler. Pakistan was really missing a specialist and wicket taker fast bowler after muhammad irfan injury. junaid, gul, irfan, ajmal, afridi and hafeez waoooooooo what a lethal attack pakistan have if batting continues the current touch than Insha ALLAH no one stops pakistan from winning upcoming T20 world cup. Hope irfan will recover soon

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 0:55 GMT)

we would love to see his yorkers again...

Posted by   on (December 22, 2013, 0:32 GMT)

Hmm... so that means Gull will land in Sharjah, will rush straight to the stadium and take in part in an international game... Interesting.

Thank God

Gully Bhai is back

Please Selectors drop Tanvir and play Gul then we will win the series without a doubt

Posted by wapuser on (December 22, 2013, 0:10 GMT)

Its a very good sign for Pakistan and Pakistan definitely need him in death overs by the way Sohail tanvir is avg bowler and should be sidelined. Anwar ali would give a chance in place of Bilawal bhatti

Posted by Herath-UK on (December 21, 2013, 23:15 GMT)

Will be glad to see him in action in the series,he is a top class bowler & will bring more drama to the matches. Sri Lanka better face him & win the series. Ranil Herath _ Kent

Didn't enjoy cricket for a while until this tour. Thanks to both teams. Great cricket to be seen for next few weeks.

Posted by shahnbej on (December 21, 2013, 22:43 GMT)

Wrong decision by PCB. He is no doubt best bowler but we should try youngsters like Usman, Talha or etc. The timing for his return is totally wrong, he should include in Asian cup.

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 22:20 GMT)

Good move by PCB, but the question is that can he perform in a pressure game

Posted by MrKessel on (December 21, 2013, 21:56 GMT)

Great news for Pakistan ODI squad. In my opinion he should play every T20 & ODI game for next couple years and hopefully Amir will be back by then. Imagine facing Amir, Junaid, Gul, Irfan, Ajmal, Afrid, Hafeez in 2015 World Cup. This bowling line up can easily 200 defend on any given day on most pitches around the world. They don't all have to play at once either, you can rotate them for rest & bench strength.

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 21:54 GMT)

gul is very good bowler in short format of the game for Pakistan and his experience will help Pakistan bowl well against Sri lanka.

I think it's time to say good bye to Sohail Tanveer for the last time and move on while playing with better bowlers.

Posted by applethief on (December 21, 2013, 21:37 GMT)

Bit sceptical about how Gul will cope with the new ODI playing conditions he'll be coming into. He was one of the few bowlers who could get reverse-swing in ODIs (when he actually pitched it up, instead of all the mid-pitch rubbish we're used to from him.) Also, the extra fielder in the ring might prove tricky for Gul as well. We'll have to wait and see, but I think it's going to be tough for him

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 21:35 GMT)

Pakistan Batting been decent in past two games but they are not consistence all the time, if they fail Pak bowling attack even with Gull wont be able to stop SL cus they bat deep down to Malinga

Posted by Sports4Youth on (December 21, 2013, 21:33 GMT)

Another bad news for Pakistan supporters. Why dont the selectors and Misbah realise that TANVIR & GUL are T20 bowlers. ONly that In T20's GUL is better than Tanvir. As far as ODI's are concerned both of them have failed to make any mark. BELOW ARE THE STATS OF THE PAKISTANI BOWLERS IN 2013.

Pakistan's bowling figures In the last 2 years:

JUNAID K: 29 ODI'S, 55 wickets, Avg - 21.69, Eco - 5.04.

M.IRFAN : 25 ODI'S, 39 wickets, Avg - 25, Eco - 4.57.

UMAR GUL: 18 ODI'S, 18 wickets, Avg - 43.38 and Eco - 5.57.

S.TANIVR : 15 ODI'S, 12 wickets, Avg - 52.66 , Eco - 5.37.

W. RIAZ : 17 ODI's, 10 Wickets, Avg - 66.60, Eco - 5.86.

S. AJMAL : 47 ODI's, 85 Wickets, Avg - 21.22 , Eco - 4.21.

S.AFRIDI : 38 ODI's, 41 Wickets, Avg - 34.90, Eco - 4.78

M.HAFEEZ: 48 ODI's, 33 Wickets, Avg - 45.36 , Eco - 3.88

Gul balls good with old ball but with 2 new ball rule it will be a new challenge for him only time will tell

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 21:14 GMT)

it still scary. misbah may ruin the whole set up.. his poor decisions.. he may replace him with junaid and continue his love for suhail tanveer.

Posted by AmmarRajar on (December 21, 2013, 21:13 GMT)

Gul is the need of Pakistan team...he is best for odi and t20...from now he should not be included in test team..

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 21:12 GMT)

Our young pacers. Anwar Ali and Bilawal are good but they lack experience. Gully is the best option in the absence of irfan. He is good enough in death bowling. Anwar ali is good allrounder but he lack pace which is not sufficient for death bowling, and hardly his ball reach to the keeper. Good move by PCB.. Lets see what happen ahead.

It will be Great to see Gul and Junaid bowling together and it will definately make stonger the bowling department of Pakistan... We missed You GulDozar.. hope u have Great Come Back and my best wishes are always with you..!! (Y)

Anwar Ali is so much better than Sohail Tanveer, I am not sure why ST in team for so long, he just leak runs and horrible is field, they would rather play AR if they don't have any bowlers. Umer Gul has past its prime in my opinion. i think he is not needed at this point if Anwar Ali is in squad.

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 20:55 GMT)

Pakistan bowling will be pumped up after his inclusion in the side and tanveer definitely should be out now

Please do not pick Sohail Tanvir

Posted by Aane_do on (December 21, 2013, 20:34 GMT)

No doubt over the capability of umar Gull he is an asset for pakistan. A fast bowler has shoulder Back and knee solid strong and without injuries.. unfortunately he has done surgeries of Shoulder back and knee. so i think his time is near to finish he has time left for playing cricket until the next injury. till then pakistan need to groom more fast bowlers along with junaid irfan and gull. Returning of Amir will also add value in pakistani fast bowling department. Bhatti is kind of Mohammad sami caliber who has got the pace but not able to bowl on consistant line and length.

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 20:33 GMT)

we are happy to seen umar gul back in squad

Posted by   on (December 21, 2013, 20:27 GMT)

I think Anwar Ali must give a chance, instead of Tanvir Sohail,i dont understand why he (Sohail Tanvir) is giving so many chances,he is not so useful bowler,so let Anwar Ali come in 3rd odi,now Umer Gul in squad,so Anwar Ali should b good combination.

Posted by farhan.ee on (December 21, 2013, 20:23 GMT)

A sensible decision but Umar Gul should not be considered for the test series. He is a useful bowler for T20s and ODIs only. A very surprising decision by team management so far by preferring Sohail Tanvir over Anwar Ali. So possibly, Junaid Khan might be dropped (after picking 6 wickets in 2 ODIs) for Umar Gul as Sohail Tanvir is the best bowler Pakistan has ever produced in the history ;)

I think situation demands Gul's call back he is the only option we can't relay on Tanvir and Bilawal Bhatti against Srilanka. Its not that Gul is gaunted to make a difference but we have no choice at the moment. Situation demands this and its a gamble but we'll have to take this chances.

he is ok for odis and best for t20s but not for tests. anwar should also get chance. they may make 2 changes and bring both anwar and guk for bhatti and tanvir. 1st choice would be a fit irfan.

Just what we need, if our batting is still good no way we can lose with Junaid/Gul hope our spinners do better tomorrow

Pak was def missing this experience and death over bowling in the setup. Thumbs up to PCB for once. Hope Gul comes good despite short notice call up.

Personally, I just want him to play in this ODI series, and then I want him out. He is an old horse who is useless for pakistan. I would rather have him play only t20s as that is what he is good at. I really hope he does not play any tests, because he is terrible! And shows no signs whatsoever of improving at all. I'd prefer if anwar ali would play in the next ODI, he proved how good he was, so why don't they let him play? Did you guys see him South Africa? He was terrible! I hope once Mohammed irfan returns, they let gul leave and play only t20s. And I mention this one more time, I really hope he does not play within the tests!
